Popular music as cultural commodity : the American recorded music industries 1976-1985

This dissertation is an analysis of historical change within those cultural industries involved in the production and dissemination of popular music. Through an analysis of the relationship between the recording and radio industries within the United States, during the period 1976-1985, the manner in which crises within these industries arise and are resolved is traced. The emergence of such musical forms as "disco" and "New Wave", and the manner in which these forms have been integrated within the functioning of the music-related industries, are central concerns of the dissertation. At the same time, more general theoretical hypotheses concerning the role played by taste in the creation of audiences for different categories of popular music are elaborated and employed within the study of specific musical genres.

Conceptualisations of 'the community' and 'community knowledge' among community radio volunteers in Katutura, Namibia

Community radio typically relies on volunteers to produce and present stations’ programming. Volunteers are generally drawn from stations’ target communities and are seen as “representatives” of those communities. It is with such volunteers and their role as representatives of stations’ target communities that this study is concerned. It poses the question: “what are the central concepts that typically inform volunteers’ knowledge of their target community, and how do these concepts impact on their perception of how they have gained this knowledge, and how they justify their role as representatives of this community?” The dissertation teases out the implications of these conceptualisations for a volunteer team’s ability to contribute to the establishment of a media environment that operates as a Habermasian ‘critical public sphere’. It argues that this can only be achieved if volunteers have detailed and in-depth knowledge of their target community. In order to acquire this knowledge, volunteers should make use of systematic ways of learning about the community, rather than relying solely on knowledge obtained by living there. In a case study of Katutura Community Radio (KCR), one of the bestknown community radio stations in Namibia, the study identifies key differences in the way in which different groups of volunteers conceptualise “the community”. The study focuses, in particular, on such difference as it applies to those who are volunteers in their personal capacity and those who represent non-governmental and community-based organisations at the station. It is argued that two strategies would lead to significant improvement in such a station’s ability to serve as a public sphere. Firstly, the station would benefit from an approach in which different sections of the volunteer team share knowledge of the target community with each other. Secondly, volunteers should undertake further systematic research into their target community. It is also argued that in order to facilitate such processes, radio stations such as KCR should recognise the inevitability of differences between different versions of “community knowledge”.

The rising popularity of Pidgin English radio stations in Nigeria: an audience study of Wazobia FM, Lagos

This research is located within media studies and draws on the Cultural Studies approach. It is an audience study, which uses the mixed methods of focus group discussions and an online survey to examine the importance of the use of Nigerian Pidgin as a broadcast language in investigating the rising popularity of Pidgin English radio in a multi-ethnic and multi-lingual Nigeria. The study focuses on Wazobia FM, a radio station in Lagos, and the first pidgin station in Nigeria. It seeks to determine whether the station’s audience engaged with the station’s programming based on its prioritisation of NigP and the linguistic identity it offers them. The study foregrounds the marginalised status of NigP within the politics of language in Nigeria. It traces the language’s evolution through popular and oppositional expressions in broadcasting and in music. It also seeks to establish the place of Pidgin English within the role that language plays in the formation of the Nigerian identity. This study thus adopts the ‘emic’ perspective, which underpins qualitative methodology, and views social life in terms of processes as opposed to static terms. The theoretical framework of this research revolves around culture, language and identity. Pertinent concepts in post-colonial studies, together with conceptual frameworks in Cultural Studies, such as popular culture, representation, hegemony and counter-culture have been used to make sense of the popularity of NigP radio stations.

Its aims are: to understand theoretically and empirically how those processes develop inside the radio stations and explore their particularities; to understand the structures, radio formats, teams, income sources and the development of their digital involvement; to understand the processes of stimuli, broadcasting, and interaction, in terms of citizenship; to understand what s behind the new ways of communicating, both territorial and on the Internet; to understand how the internet user participates; and to make a list of those community radio stations, including the self-labeled backlands radio stations, reviewing the particularities in their programming formats, as well as the differences between each other regarding both territorial and non-territorial (Internet) broadcasting. The methodology applied consists of a bibliographic and documental research, of a previously made listing of those broadcasting stations, as well as field research consisting of in loco visits and semi-structured interviews, in order to obtain a better understanding of the broadcasting stations in the eight northeastern backlands states (Alagoas, Bahia, Ceará, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Piauí, Rio Grande do Norte and Sergipe). The broadcasting stations presence on the internet was also monitored both on their websites and on social networks. Based on theoretical parameters, we can classify the community radio stations in three types, regarding their Internet presence: off-line (those which have some Internet presence but do not broadcast online), institutionally online (those which simultaneously broadcast online the same content provided over the radio) and the dynamic online (those which broadcast a distinct content online and promote interactivity). By broadcasting online, the backlands community radio stations improve their capability of promoting listener participation, interaction and interactivity because a new type of community radio communication feedback is born, promoted by the resulting deterritorialization, which is the biggest challenge for these radio stations which operate in the poorest region of the country, where the most popular radio stations still serve the interests of influential people. / A tese aborda os processos comunicacionais nas rádios comunitárias do Sertão do Nordeste do Brasil que estão na Internet. Objetiva-se entender teórica e empiricamente como ocorrem esses processos nestas emissoras e explorar suas especificidades; compreender as estruturas, programações, equipes, financiamentos e históricos de inserção digital; entender os processos de estímulo, emissão e interação, em termos de cidadania; compreender como se dão as novas vozes, territoriais e na Internet; entender como se dá a participação do usuário (internauta); e listar as rádios comunitárias ou que se assumem comunitárias sertanejas, entendendo suas peculiaridades de programação, diferencial em termos de emissão territorial e não territorial (via Internet). A metodologia empregada consiste em pesquisa bibliográfica e documental, em mapeamento prévio das emissoras, bem como de pesquisa de campo por meio visitas in loco e de entrevistas semiestruturadas para entender-se as emissoras nos oito Estados sertanejos nordestinos (Alagoas, Bahia, Ceará, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Piauí, Rio Grande do Norte e Sergipe). Acompanhou-se também o trabalho das emissoras na Internet, tanto em seus sites quanto a presença em redes sociais. Constata-se, com base em parâmetros teóricos, a existência de três tipos de emissoras de rádio comunitária na Internet: as off-line (que apenas têm espaço na Internet, mas não há transmissão simultânea), as online institucionais (que apenas transmitem simultaneamente a programação no dial) e as online dinâmicas (que têm conteúdo diferencial da emissora no dial e promovem interação e interatividade). O fato de estar na Internet faz com que as emissoras de rádio comunitária sertanejas aumentem sua capacidade de promover a participação, a interação e a interatividade, pois ocorre a retroalimentação da comunicação comunitária radiofônica com um novo tipo movido pela desterritorialização, que é o maior desafio dessas emissoras em lugares de baixo poder aquisitivo e comunicacional onde a presença do coronelismo eletrônico ainda persiste.

A pesquisa desenvolvida tem como objetivo analisar os conteúdos jornalísticos das rádios Cero Corá e FM Melodia e verificar se o meio, que atua como instrumento de divulgação, representa de forma simbólica a cultura e a identidade das comunidades fronteiriças. A análise foi desenvolvida na fronteira de Ponta Porã-Pedro Juan Caballero e Corumbá-Puerto Quijarro, e a seleção dos objetos de pesquisa, a saber, as rádios de fronteira, teve como fundamento o fato de caracterizarem-se as emissoras como binacionais. Por ser uma região limítrofe do Brasil, onde não existem barreiras geográficas, caracterizada pela conformação de fronteira seca, os municípios sul-mato-grossenses e paraguaio e boliviano representam uma área peculiar para pesquisa, uma vez que os intercâmbios entre as comunidades são cotidianos. Sendo assim, pretende-se identificar se os discursos e as vivências da população que mora na fronteira estão presentes nos relatos das emissoras radiofônicas. / The research aimed at analyzing the journalistic content of Cerro Cora and FM Melodia radio stations and certifying that the medium represents in a symbolic manner the culture and identity of the neighbouring communities. The analysis took place on the borders of Ponta Porã-Juan Caballero and Corumbá-Puerto Quijarro and the choice of the research objects, i.e. the neighbouring communities\' radio stations, happened thanks to their binational characteristic. Since it is a borderline region of Brazil, with countries separated by land borders and with no actual barriers between them, the exchange between communities is common-place and thus such municipalities of Mato Grosso do Sul, Paraguay and Bolivia are very peculiar subjects to research. Hence, the goal here is to identify whether the language and experiences of the population of the borders are present in the broadcast of the radio stations.

The problem of this study was to document the history of radio station WKY, Oklahoma City, and to locate its place within the development of American radio broadcasting. This thesis divides WKY's history into two periods: 1920 through 1925, the years it was operated by Earl Hull, and 1926 through 1989, after it was acquired by E. K. Gaylord. The purpose of this study was to record the history of the oldest radio station operating west of the Mississippi River, its effect on the broadcast industry in general, and its effect on Gaylord Broadcasting Corporation, the parent organization. The study also explored the innovations. in both programming and engineering that caused the station to grow into one of the most popular radio stations in the Southwest, as well as its decline in recent years.

[pt] O foco do estudo são os estilos conversacionais de repórteres aéreos em rádios da cidade do Rio de Janeiro durante a transmissão de notícias em tempo real sobre o fluxo do trânsito na cidade. O objetivo consiste em avaliar como os repórteres aéreos alternam seus estilos em função da audiência e do contexto situacional do trânsito em um grande centro urbano. A pesquisa parte da perspectiva teórica da sociolinguística interacional, em interface com a teoria da acomodação e do design da audiência, em contextos de ordem micro e macro. A discussão do conceito de estilo conversacional é fundamental, no âmbito das teorias em articulação. Conceitos também importantes são os de tipos de atividade, avaliação, enquadre, alinhamento, pistas de contextualização e conversa cotidiana. A pesquisa se pauta pela investigação qualitativa, de natureza interpretativa. A análise baseia-se em dados gerados mediante gravação de notícias sobre o fluxo do trânsito com quatro repórteres aéreos, em seis emissoras de rádio FM do Rio de Janeiro. Os dados foram transcritos de acordo com convenções da análise da conversa e foram analisados no curso da fala-eminteração dos repórteres aéreos com locutores das rádio e com foco na audiência no trânsito. O estudo mostra que os mesmos repórteres aéreos variam seus estilos conversacionais em diferentes rádios, com diferentes tipos de discurso, variando entre um estilo conversacional informativo de baixo envolvimento interpessoal em algumas rádios e um estilo conversacional informativo de alto envolvimento interpessoal em outras. / [en] The present study focuses on the conversational styles of the aerial reporters on radio stations during the transmission of real-time news about the traffic flow in the city of Rio de Janeiro. The study aims to evaluate how the aerial reporters shift their styles depending on the audience and the situational context of traffic on a great city. The theoretical perspective lies on interactional sociolinguistics and its relation to the social accommodation theory and audience design, in micro and macro contexts. The discussion on the concept of conversational style is crucial, on the scope of the related theories. Other important concepts deal with speech activity and evaluation; framing, alignment, contextualization cues and discourse strategies. The research are characterized on the qualitative and interpretative investigation. The analysis is based on the recording of news about the traffic flow from four aerial reporters in six FM radio stations in Rio de Janeiro. The data were transcribed according to the conventions of conversation analysis and analyzed on the scope of talk-in-interaction from the aerial reporters and radio announcers focusing on the audience on traffic. The study shows that the same aerial reporters shift their conversational styles in different radios, performing different discourse types, varying from a low involvement interpersonal conversational informative style on some radio stations to a high involvement interpersonal conversational informative style on other radio stations.

Making music radio : the record industry and popular music production in the UK

Music radio is the most listened to form of radio, and one of the least researched by academic ethnographers. This research project addresses industry structure and agency in an investigation into the relationship between music radio and the record industry in the UK, how that relationship works to produce music radio and to shape the production of popular music. The underlying context for this research is Peterson's production of culture perspective. The research is in three parts: a model of music radio production and consumption, an ethnographic investigation focusing on music radio programmers and record industry pluggers, and an ethnographic investigation into the use of specialist music radio programming by alternative pop and rock artists in Glasgow, Scotland. The research has four main conclusions: music radio continues to be central to the record industry's promotional strategy for new commercial recordings; music radio is increasing able to mediate the production practices of the popular music industry; that mediation is focused through the social relationship between music radio programmers and record industry pluggers; cultural practices of musicians are developed and mediated by consumption of specialist music radio, as they become part of specialist music radio.
