Response of rodents to land use gradients in small-holder farms in Northern Limpopo: implications for ecologically-based rodent management (EBRM)Nembudani, Nkhumeleni Lesly 18 September 2017 (has links)
MENVSC / Department of Ecology and Resource Management / Rodents can quickly respond to land use changes whether the change positively or negatively
influences their life. In the case of positive influence, rodents exploit the additional food resources
and increase their numbers to potential pest level, especially in the absence of predators. Such a
population increase can potentially be harmful to humans due to the diseases that rodents carry and
the costs due to damage to crops, stored foods and personal possessions that they may cause to small
holder farmers. Small holder farmers live in a mixed landscape that is constantly changing. Such
changes are changes in land use and they do not only affect rodent population dynamics and species
composition, but also their ecosystem services and integrity. Understanding how rodents respond to
these land use changes (crop, grazing and settlement) will not only improve the implementation of
Ecologically Based Rodent Management (EBRM), but might also enable the monitoring of
ecosystem integrity. Rodent trapping was conducted in two different study sites which experience
different rainfalls during wet and dry season. A 70 m x 70 m grid was set in three different land uses
(crops, grazing and settlement) per study site. A mark-recapture technique was applied and all
captures were processed on a temporal station on site. In all grids at a distance of 30 m a line of 20
snap traps were set. With the tapping effort of 1470 trap nights per season for both seasons in this
study we captured 839 rodents and 2 shrews, which represented 469 individual rodents and 1
individual shrew. At Vyeboom, cropping land use had the highest number capture (210) and the
highest in species richness (9) rodent species and 1 shrew. The settlement land use was second at 144
captures for 8 rodent species and lastly the grazing land use at 80 captures with 7 rodent species. On
the other hand, at Ka-Ndengeza also cropping land use had the highest capture (186) with highest
richness at 7 rodent species. When it comes to settlement and grazing, settlement was second (129)
to cropping in terms of the number of capture but last in terms of richness (5) whilst grazing was last
in terms of number of captures 92 and second in terms of richness (6). Despite the high diversity of
rodents, only Mastomys natalensis, Gerbilliscus leucogaster, Steatomys pratensis and Rattus rattus
were captured in meaningful sample sizes to allow for robust density estimation. Similarly there
were strong seasonal effects on rodent captures, with almost no captures during the wet season.

Sustainable grazing management in semi-arid rangelands. An ecological-economic modelling approachMüller, Birgit 28 March 2006 (has links)
The loss of utilisable rangeland in semi-arid areas results in huge economic and social costs worldwide. Only adaptive management strategies are able to cope with these systems, which are largely driven by unpredictable and stochastic rainfall. Additionally they are characterized by strong feedback mechanisms between economic and ecological factors. This study aims to contribute to the identification of basic principles for sustainable grazing management. The approach emphasizes learning from existing management systems through the use of ecological-economic modelling. Two apparently successful management systems in Namibia are used as a starting point for a broader analysis: the Gamis Karakul sheep farm and the land use system of the semi-nomadic Ova-Himba. Although the economic systems differ strongly, their management seems to have similarities: the importance of pasture resting and of adapting livestock numbers to available forage. This PhD thesis contributes substantial insights about the relevance and functioning of pasture resting for sustainable grazing management in semi-arid regions. Assessment of the two case studies leads to the hypothesis that resting in the rainy season, particularly during wet years, is fundamental for ensuring pasture productivity under low regeneration potential of the vegetation. The thesis highlights that resting during wet years acts as a risk reducing strategy. Additionally, the study reveals that access to economic risk management strategies, such as rain-index-insurance, may change farmer´s behaviour towards less conservative strategies. The used approach - learning from existing apparently successful grazing strategies by ecological-economic modelling - offers a powerful tool for tackling new questions related to global change. The scope and the limits for generalizing the key factors discovered for sustainable grazing management can be easily detected under changing ecological, climatic and economic conditions.

considerable landscape transformation and lead to introduction of alien species that now
dominate secondary succession on abandoned agricultural fields. Various restoration attempts
have been made to reduce alien plant species cover, and to enhance the re-establishment and
cover of native plant species. However, results and successes were mostly short-term due to
re-growth and persistence of the weedy alien species, which has been suggested to be caused
by land use history, especially the nutrient enrichment of soil, and particularly phosphorus
and nitrogen.
This study investigated different soil properties (pH, electrical conductivity (EC), soil
moisture, as well as available phosphorus (P) and total nitrogen (N)) on 10 and 20 year old
abandoned fields, as a function of depth in three habitats (ridge (old cultivated area), ditch
(old drainage line) and slope (intermediate zone between ridge and ditch)) on the old fields.
The relationship between these soil properties and the vegetation occurring on the two old
fields was established. At the same time, restoration treatments (autumn burn, combination of
autumn burn and herbicide, herbicide application alone, as well as spring burn) were
conducted to reduce the cover and abundance of non-native plant species and Cynodon
dactylon, and to enhance cover of native species.
Results from the study show that levels of all investigated soil properties were higher on the
younger field. The highest difference was observed in EC and pH. Seasonal differences in
both soil properties could also be observed. A principal component analysis indicated that the
dynamic of all soil properties shaped the vegetation type on old fields, with the main soil
properties being dependent on land-use history and time since abandonment. This study
suggests that EC and pH could be part of parameters that drive the persistence of undesirable
species persistence on old fields and inhibit native plant species instead.

La restauration écologique a été identifiée comme une approche permettant notamment de ralentir la perte de biodiversité et de maintenir tous les biens et services issus de cette biodiversité desquels dépend le bien être de notre civilisation actuelle. Cette restauration des écosystèmes se base sur des connaissances provenant à la fois de l'écologie des communautés et de l’écologie de la restauration. Les objectifs de la thèse sont donc de comprendre la dynamique d’une steppe méditerranéenne après changements d’usage ainsi que la mise en oeuvre de techniques qui pourraient être appliquées à la restauration de cet écosystème après une perturbation anthropique sévère. La thèse a pour objet d'étude la steppe méditerranéenne de la plaine de Crau, et notamment d’anciennes cultures pour étudier la recolonisation spontanée après perturbation et le projet de réhabilitation à grande échelle de Cossure pour les expérimentations sur les techniques de restauration. En ce qui concerne la dynamique après une perturbation anthropique exogène sévère, nous avons confirmé la faible résilience de la communauté végétale steppique à la fois à moyen (30-40 ans) et long terme (150 ans), tandis que les paramètres du sol et le taux d'infestation des mycorhizes sont résilients sur le long terme. En outre, nous avons confirmé le rôle joué par les trois filtres dans la recolonisation des communautés végétales. En ce qui concerne la steppe de la Crau, la recolonisation est déterminée en premier par le filtre abiotique, puis par le filtre de dispersion et enfin par le filtre biotique. Compte tenu de la faible résilience de la communauté, nous avons testé plusieurs techniques de restauration appliquées à grande échelle au sein du projet de réhabilitation de Cossure: le semis d’espèces nurses, l'étrépage de sol, le transfert de foin et le transfert de sol. Afin d'évaluer l'efficacité des techniques de restauration, nous avons développé des indices pour mesurer « l 'intégrité » de la structure de la communauté permettant de distinguer les abondances inférieures des abondances supérieures par rapport à la communauté de référence. Les meilleurs résultats ont été obtenus avec le transfert du sol, suivi par l’étrépage de sol, puis le semis d’espèces nurses et enfin le transfert de foin. Ces résultats ont toutefois confirmé la difficulté de restaurer totalement la communauté végétale steppique. Les recherches menées au sein de cette thèse montrent que les connaissances actuelles en matière de restauration écologique permettent de restaurer au moins partiellement certaines composantes de cet écosystème, mais suggèrent de mettre un maximum de moyens pour la conservation in situ des habitats naturels plutôt que de devoir les restaurer après qu'ils aient été détruits / Ecosystem restoration has been identified as one approach to slow down the loss of biodiversity and to protect all the biodiversity-based goods and services from which humankind benefits. Restoration feeds from knowledge coming from both community ecology and restoration ecology. The objectives of the thesis are to provide insights on both the dynamics of a mediterranean steppe after changes in land-use and the implementation of techniques which could be applied to restore this ecosystem after severe anthropogenic disturbances. The thesis takes as a study object the La Crau Mediterranean steppe, and especially former cultivated fields to study the recovery after cultivation and the Cossure large scale rehabilitation project to experiment rehabilitation and restoration techniques. Concerning dynamics after severe exogenous anthropogenic disturbances, we confirmed the low resilience of the steppe plant community both at mid- (30-40 years) and long-term (150 years) while the resilience of soil parameters and mycorrhizal infestation rate are effective on the long-term. Moreover we confirmed the role played by the three filters in the plant community recovery and found that for the La Crau steppe, this is firstly driven by the abiotic filter, then by the dispersion filter and finally by the biotic filter. Given this low resilience, we tested several restoration techniques applied at large-scale within the Cossure rehabilitation project: nurse species seeding, topsoil removal, hay transfer and soil transfer. In order to assess the efficiency of restoration techniques we developed indices to measure the community structure integrity, disentangling lower and higher abundances compared to the reference. The best results were obtained with soil transfer, followed by topsoil removal, then nurse species seeding and finally hay transfer. The research conducted for this thesis shows that current knowledge in ecological restoration makes it possible to restore at least partially some La Crau ecosystem components, but ought to lead us to understand the importance of in situ conservation of natural habitats as a better alternative to restore them after they were destroyed

Dry woodland and savanna vegetation dynamics in the Eastern Okavango Delta, Botswana.Tedder, Michelle Jennifer. 15 November 2013 (has links)
The Okavango Delta is an extremely dynamic system with variable vegetation comprised of permanent
swamps, seasonal swamps, dry islands, floodplains and dry grassland, savanna and woodland. The system
is largely driven by the interaction between fire and the annual flood, which filters down from the
Okavango River catchments in Angola. While extensive research has been conducted on the flood-driven
vegetation little is known about the dry woodland and savanna regions bordering these flood-driven
habitats. A taxonomic classification of woody species composition resulted in eleven vegetation types.
These data were then reanalyzed in terms of woody species morphology allowing these eleven vegetation
types to be grouped into four functional response groups in order to provide a platform for improving the
understanding of how dry woodland and savannas interact with the environment. These four groups were
the savanna group mixed thornveld and the three woodland groups; mixed broadleaf woodland, shrub
mopane woodland and tall mopane woodland. Burning in mixed thornveld and mixed broadleaf woodland
was found to decrease woody species density and grass fuel loads and could be used for grazing
management to remove unpalatable growth and improve grass species composition, while burning in
shrub mopane woodland and mixed mopane woodland merely decreased the woody understory and is not
recommended. Utilization dominated by grazing livestock resulted in overutilization of the grass sward
leading to bush encroachment in both mixed thornveld and shrub mopane woodland, while utilization by
goats alone resulted in underutilization of the grass sward and a dominance of herbaceous annuals.
Livestock utilization had no effect on the occurrence of Pecheul-loeschea leubnitziae, a shrubby pioneer
previously thought to be an indicator of overgrazing, however extensive P. leubnitziae cover was
associated with a sward dominated by shade-tolerant grasses with low forage quality. Shrub mopane
woodland and tall mopane woodland appear to be more stable vegetation states than mixed broadleaf
woodland and mixed thornveld being less vulnerable to colonization by pioneer species and alteration as a
result of utilization or environmental factors. For this reason management and monitoring of mixed
thornveld and mixed broadleaf woodland is essential to prevent vegetation degradation and to ensure

The role of fire in bush encroachment in Ithala Game Reserve.Gordijn, Paul Jan. 27 May 2014 (has links)
The increase of woody vegetation (also known as bush or shrub encroachment) in savannas
has become of global concern to conservationists and rangeland managers alike. Bush
encroachment has been associated with a decrease in rageland palatability. In addition, the increase
in woody biomass has consequences for climate change, carbon sequestration, rangeland hydrology
and nutrient cycling. As a result of these large changes in ecosystem functioning with bush
encroachment, biodiversity may be threatened. Fire is considered to be one of the most important
management tools used to control woody biomass in savannas. However, despite the use of fire in
Ithala Game Reserve, areas have become encroached. This thesis assesses the role of fire in bush
encroachment in Ithala Game Reserve.
I start this thesis with a discussion of the bottom-up (water, nutrients, and light) and topdown
(fire and herbivory) ecosystem components in the literature review. This sets the foundation
for an understanding of the factors that affect savanna tree:grass ratios for the rest of this thesis. In
addition the review discusses the potential effects of climate change on savanna tree:grass ratios.
Recently, it has been proposed that increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations result in
an increased competitive ability for C3 woody plants against C4 grasses. Many models have been
produced to explain savanna dynamics. By assessing the role of fire in Ithala Game Reserve, its
functioning is assessed in light of the current issues of bush encroachment.
Textural analysis is a remote sensing technique that has been used to detect changes in
woody vegetation using aerial photographs. Textural analysis was used to assess changes in woody
vegetation cover and density from 1943 (earliest period for which aerial photographs were available
for the study area) to 1969, 1990 and 2007 in Ithala Game Reserve (IGR). Field surveys were
performed to assess the effects of the fire regime in IGR on woody vegetation structure and
composition. Transects were performed in areas with different fire frequencies. The effects of fire
frequency were compared between similar vegetation communities.
Textural analysis showed that woody vegetation cover (+32.5%) and density
(657.9 indiv. ha-1) increased from 1943 to 2007. Importantly, in some areas of IGR, the suppression
of fire led to the rapid invasion of woody plants from 1990 to 2007. Field studies demonstrated the
importance of fire in controlling woody vegetation in IGR. The densities of the encroachers,
Dichrostachys cinerea and Acacia karroo were resistant to annual burns. However, the height of
these deciduous microphyllous woody encroachers was reduced by more frequent fires. Following
the suppression of fire, these trees grew taller and their negative impact on the herbaceous layer
increased. Consequently, fuel loads (grassy biomass) declined and prevented the use of frequent
and intense fires by management. The reduction in fire frequency allowed the invasion of woody
evergreen macrophyllous species. Continued development of fire-resistant patches of evergreen
macrophyllous vegetation will further reduce the effectiveness of fire in controlling bush
encroachment.
To control bush encroachment in IGR and the consequential loss of biodiversity, an
intermediate fire frequency (one burn every 2 to 4 years) is required. Burns also need to be hot
enough to increase the current rate of topkill. Management should act to optimize the accumulation

Dispersal of seeds as a constraint in revegetation of old fields in Renosterveld vegetation in the Western Cape, South AfricaShiponeni, Ndafuda Nangula 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScFor )--Stellenbosch University, 2003. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Species-rich Renosterveld vegetation does not return to old agricultural fields even
after many years (10-20) of abandonment. In most cases the fields are slowly taken
over by non-indigenous species, particularly alien pasture grasses and African lawn
grass. While poor survival of indigenous seedlings due to competition, grazing or any
other establishment constraints, might explain the failure of natural vegetation to
colonise old fields, here I am testing the hypothesis that recolonisation by indigenous
plant species is limited by seed dispersal. I have quantified changes in seed density
with distance from the natural vegetation into old fields using seed traps and soil seed
bank assessment. I have also looked at seed dispersal in the dung of large herbivores.
Shrubs (with the exception of Eytropappus rhinocerotis) were poorly represented in
the seed rain indicating that they might be seed limited. Dicerothamnus rinocerotis (a
dominant shrub in Renosterveld) and certain geophytes (that were recovered in the
soil bank) have proven that seed dispersal is not the primary constraint to their return
to ploughed fields. Dicerothamnus rinocerotis produces a large number of seeds that
are dispersed long distances into the old field and a number of geophytes were well
represented in the soil bank. Large herbivores are dispersing a lot of herbaceous forbs
in their dung but make very little contribution to the dispersal of indigenous tussock
grass and shrubs. Seeds of indigenous Renosterveld tussock grasses (e.g Tribolium
hispidum) were restricted to the edge of the natural vegetation. My research has
shown that some indigenous seeds, particularly those dispersed in wind and through
large mammals, do reach the old ploughed field. I therefore conclude that seed
dispersal is not the primary constraint to the natural recovery of populations of some
indigenous plant species on old fields, but may limit recovery of certain indigenous
geophytes, grasses and shrubs. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Spesie-ryke Renosterveld plantegroei hervestig nie op ou landerye nie, selfs ná baie

dat struike saadbeperk is. Eytropappus rhinocerotis ('n dominante struik in
Renosterveld) en sekere geofiete (wat in die saadbank gevind is) het bewys dat
saadverspreiding nie die hoofbeperking is vir hulle terugkeer na geploegde lande nie.
Eytropappus rhinocerotis produseer 'n groot hoeveelheid saad wat oor groot afstande
oor die ou landerye versprei word en 'n aantal geofiete was goed verteenwoordig in
die saadbank. Groot herbivore versprei 'n groot hoeveelheid kruidagtige forbe in
hulle mis, maar maak 'n baie klein bydrae tot die verspreiding van inheemse polgras
en struike. Saad van inheemse Renosterveld polgrasse (bv. Tribolium hispidum) was
beperk tot die some van die natuurlike plantegroei. My navorsing het getoon dat
sommige inheemse saad, veral dié wat deur die wind en deur groot herbivore versprei
word, wel die ou geploegde landerye bereik. Ek maak dus die gevolgtrekking dat
saadverspreiding nie die hoofbeperking is vir die natuurlike herstel van populasies
van sommige inheemse plantspesies op ou landerye nie, maar mag die herstel van
sekere inheemse geofiete, grasse en struike beperk.

Evaluation of range condition, soil properties, seed banks and farmer's perceptions in Peddie communal rangeland of the Eastern Cape, South AfricaMndela, Mthunzi January 2013 (has links)
South African rangelands in combination with their surrounding homesteads occupy 13% of the entire land surface in South Africa. These rangelands are a source of forage for communal livestock. The rangelands in communal tenure system are degraded due to high human population and livestock numbers. The rangeland of Peddie was never evaluated since the introduction of Nguni Cattle Empowerment Project. Therefore, socio-ecological evaluation was conducted in order to interlink farmer‟s perceptions and scientific data to recommend appropriate rangeland management and restoration programme. Two structured questionnaires consisting of close and open ended questions were used to investigate farmer‟s perceptions on rangeland condition, dynamics, and their causes. Sixty households were randomly selected on the bases of livestock ownership and the membership in Nguni Cattle Project. In each household, any respondent of 20 years or greater, and a key informant of age greater than 40 years were selected. For scientific assessment of range condition, three homogenous vegetation units namely grassland, scattered and dense bushland were demarcated into four 100m x 50m replicates. In each replicate, two 100m transects were laid parallel to each other with 30m equidistant apart. The step point and harvesting method along each transect were employed for herbaceous species composition and biomass production. The point-to-tuft distance was also determined as a proxy for basal cover. Woody density, species composition and tree equivalents were determined in 200m2 belt transects in each HVU replicates. The germination method for soil seed bank evaluation was also employed to find plant species composition and density. The soil nutrients (OC, N, P, K, Na, Ca, Mg, Zn, Cu and Mn) and pH were analysed through solution preparation and observation under photospectrometer to determine functional capacity of the soil of Peddie rangeland. The farmer‟s perceptions comprised of 63% females and 37% males (n = 120) with a mean household of 8 people, 5 adults and 3 children. It was perceived by 93.3% respondents that the rangeland of Peddie have undergone changes over two decades. These changes were perceived by 83% respondents to be accompanied by decline in livestock numbers. Woody encroachment and overgrazing were perceived to be the major attributes of these vegetation changes. The scientific rangeland condition assessment confirmed that these changes were more pronounced as bush density increases. Dense bushland had a significantly high (p<0.05) encroached condition with 6650 trees ha-1 and 4909.5 TE ha-1 beyond the recommended thresholds of 2400 trees ha-1 and 2500 TE ha-1 respectively. Scattered bushland had a fair condition of 1950 trees ha-1 and 1198.1TE ha-1. Themeda triandra as a key species was significantly higher (p<0.05) in grassland (31.1%) than scattered (15.6%) and dense bushland (6.1%). There was a declining trend in biomass production from grassland to dense bushland. The summer biomass production was significantly higher (p<0.05) in grassland than scattered and dense bushland but winter biomass was not significantly different (p>0.05) from all homogenous vegetation units of Peddie rangeland. However, the soil fertility increased with an increase in bush density except organic carbon (OC) which was 1.61% in grassland, 1.46% in scattered and 1.53% in dense bushland respectively. Soil N, K, P, Mg2+ Na+, Ca2+, Cu, Zn, Mn and pH were significantly higher (p<0.05) in dense bushland than grassland and scattered bushland. High soil fertility in dense bushland may be attributed to by abscission of woody plants and litter decomposition. In the soil seed bank, the abundances of forbs were significantly higher than sedges (χ2 = 12, df = 1, p = 0.001) and grasses (χ2 = 8.333, df = 1, p = 0.004) in all homogenous vegetation units while sedges were not significantly different (χ2 = 3, df = 1, p = 0.083) from grasses. The Sorensen‟s index indicated that soil seed bank and extant vegetation were significantly different (p<0.05). Annual and biennial forbs and sedges had high abundances while perennial grasses formed a bulk in above ground vegetation. This provided an insight that a reliance on soil seed bank for restoration of Peddie rangeland would not be advisable because it can result in retrogression. The communal rangeland assessment provided clear qualitative and quantitative data when the combination of indigenous knowledge and scientific assessments was done. The rationale is that conclusions and recommendations of range assessment are relient on the farmer‟s perceptions pertinent to their livestock production systems and their rangeland management objectives. This study has shown that inclusion of communal farmers in policy making can provide better insight because those are the people experiencing the consequences of range degradation.

Sheep production practices, flock dynamics, body condition and weight variation in two ecologically different resource-poor communal farming systemsMapiliyao, Luke January 2010 (has links)
The objective of this study was to determine sheep production practices, constraints, flock dynamics, body condition and weight variation in two ecologically different resource-poor communal farming systems of the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. Mean sheep flock sizes per household were not significantly different between the two ecologically different areas (villages); Gaga (19.0±3.10) and Sompondo (18.3±3.10). Shortage of feed, disease and parasite were reported the most important constraints across the two villages. In both villages, sheep housing was poorly constructed using acacia brushwoods. Fewer farmers owned rams: the rams to ewes ratio for the two villages were 1:20, 1:19 for Gaga and Sompondo, respectively. The low ram: ewe ratios reported suggest that inbreeding might have been reducing productivity of their flocks. There was also uncontrolled breeding due to undefined and mating seasons. Gall sickness, heart water and footrot caused most of the sheep mortalities. Dohne Merinos were the common genotypes in the two villages. Total entrances for each flock were higher (p < 0.05) in hot-dry season and hot-wet season than in other seasons. Most of the entrances were lambs and were born in hot-dry season (September) and cool-dry season (June) for larger flocks (10.90 ± 3.02) and for small flocks (3.65 ± 3.02). High lamb mortalities were experienced in the post-rainy (April) and hot-wet (December) season. There was a significant interaction between season and flock size. Most of the sales occurred in the hot-wet season. Ecological area had significant effect on sheep production potential (p < 0.05) in both flock classes. The average sheep production efficiency (SPE) value for Gaga and Sompondo were 0.50 ± 0.116 and 0.50 ± 0.096 respectively. The SPE for large flock was higher (p < 0.05) by season and flock size. Large flocks had a higher (p < 0.05) SPE values and the SPE ranged from 1.11 ± 0.193 in April, a post-rainy season month to 1.55 ± 0.193 in December, a hot-wet season month. Lamb mortalities constituted the greater part of outflows. High lamb mortalities occurred in hot-wet (December), hot-dry (September) and post-rainy (April) seasons. There was a significant interaction between season and age of sheep on body weight of sheep. Highest (p < 0.05) body weights were recorded in the post-rainy and autumn season in both lambs and ewes. It is therefore very important to come up with affordable interventions which take into play ecological differences of the areas for improved nutritional status of sheep in communal areas which will lead to improved sheep productivity and the poor-resourced farmer human nutritional and livelihood.
