The institutionalisation of effective rehabilitation programmes at Groenpunt Maximum Security Prison / T.S. Thinane

Thinane, Tsekelo Shadrack January 2010 (has links)
One of the biggest challenges facing the South African prison system today is the phenomenon of recidivism (repeat offences). In ninety four percent of all cases offenders re-engage in criminal activities after they have been released from prison. This means that the majority of prisons in South Africa are ineffective in terms of rehabilitating offenders during their time in prison. The contribution of this research revolves around an analysis of the rehabilitation arrangements that are prescribed by the DCS to all Government correctional institutions (prisons). The Groenpunt maximum security prison is used as a case study to establish why rehabilitation is ineffective and to identify ways and means to reduce recidivism. In this regard the rehabilitation arrangements at Groenpunt maximum security prison is measured against the prescribed governmental rehabilitation arrangements. The following main findings (problem areas) emerged out of this research: • At Groenpunt maximum security prison the prescribed governmental prescriptions for rehabilitation are not being adhered to; and • Participation in rehabilitation programmes is not compulsory for offenders at Groenpunt maximum security prison. The above trends render rehabilitation ineffective and stimulate recidivism upon release. In order to rectify the above situation the research highlights specific shortcomings in the rehabilitation arrangements of Groenpunt maximum security prison that needs to be rectified in order to reduce recidivism. This boils down to the development of an individual needs based approach to rehabilitation and making participation in rehabilitation programmes compulsory for all offenders. It is further envisaged that the recommendations relating to Groenpunt maximum security prison can also be applied to other prisons in order to reduce the rate of recidivism in all South African prisons. / Thesis (M. Development and Management)--North-West University, Vaal Triangle Campus, 2010.

US re-engagement? - a study of central elements that will increase a US inclination to participate in a post-Kyoto agreement

Jensen, Malene January 2007 (has links)
The United States is the single largest contributor of greenhouse gas emissions. Its engagement is therefore critical to the success of any international effort to prevent man-made global climate change. It was therefore a huge step-back for the international community when President Bush soon after taking office in 2001 rejected the Kyoto Protocol. Despite a strong opposition the international community did not convince the Bush administration to reconsider its decision and re-engage in the Kyoto Protocol process. The objective of this thesis is to investigate which central elements that will increase a US inclination to participate in international agreements after the first commitment period in the Kyoto Protocol. These elements were found through a literature study of four peer-reviewed articles and an empirical analysis of four international partnership agreements. The overall conclusion is that there are several central elements that could increase a US inclination to participate in international agreements after the first commitment period in the Kyoto Protocol. These elements cover a wide range of disciplines from technology over research and development to business interests.

Designing for Re-engagement - a review of theory and practice in Personal Informatics

Pantorp, Michelle January 2016 (has links)
Personal Informatics and self-tracking has become an increasingly common phenomenonamong people today. With the advances in technology that facilitates self-tracking thenumber of self-tracking systems to choose from has also increased. Users who frequentlyswitch between self-tracking system indicate that these systems often fail to stimulate a long-term user engagement. User Engagement thus plays an important role in self-tracking and the long-term use of these systems. This work therefore addresses the problem with lack of user engagement within self-tracking in two steps. The first step is to develop a theoretical model of re-engagement through a literature review of relevant theory in user engagement. The theoretical model will show why it is important to think about designing for re-engagement to better capture long-term use. The second step is that the theoretical model is then used to analyze three successful self-tracking systems and the reported use of these. The reported use emerges by examining user feedback from forums and online communities. The result of this work will give insight into five current gaps between design theory (captured in the theoretical model) and design practice (represented by the implementations of self-tracking systems) within Personal Informatics.

Westin, Mikael, Gärdström, Mikael January 2021 (has links)
This study aims to create an understanding of how, military officer´s departing, possibilities for re-engagement could be strengthened. Today’s labor market is incused by high movement of personnel between organizations and by high individual demands on potentiality and meaningfulness with employment. If an organization manages to adapt to these circumstances it could enjoy a refund in new knowledge and dedication that comes with a re-engagement. With a re-engagement we refer to a former military officer who, now working outside the Armed Forces returns to continuous service, international service or occasional service. The results of the study show that validating civil competence, making available jobs visible and searchable, and striving for a positive departure when quitting, increases the possibilities for a re-engagement. When offered an opportunity to serve as an officer in the reserve and given access to an alumni network when quitting, possibilities for a re-engagement increases further. Additional factors that strengthen possibilities are personal and dynamic working relations and personally addressed job offers. Finally, but not least, the strong sense of identity that is inherent with military officers is a fundamental and attractive factor: Once an officer – always an officer! This qualitative, interview based and inductive study contributes to increased knowledge on factors that have an impact on re-engagement in a military context. The study further increases understanding of cultural ties between an organization and individuals and how these ties may affect a person's choice to return to a former employer.
