Reading strategies in secondary social studies: teacher reported practice and professional developmentUnknown Date (has links)
This quantitative study investigated the relationship between high school social studies teachers' reading professional development through Project CRISS: Creating Independence through Student-Owned Strategies (CRISS) and the implementation of active reading strategies in the classroom. Quantitative data were collected through an online survey in order to provide a comprehensive picture of high school social studies teachers' self-reported classroom practices relating to the use of active prereading, during-reading, and postreading strategies. Additionally, the survey asked teachers to self-report their observations of student independent implementation of the same active reading strategies. These data were used to provide an in-depth look that expanded on high school social studies teachers' self-reported classroom practices relating to reading. The results of this study indicated that there was no significant relationship between teachers' reading professional development through CRISS and their self-reported classroom practices in the implementation of active pre-, during, and postreading strategies. Further findings indicated no significant relationship between teachers' reading professional development through CRISS and their self-reported observations of student independent implementation of the same active reading strategies. Lastly, there were no correlations that indicated that years teaching in the classroom moderated these relationships. Implications and suggestions for future research were offered for future reading professional development for secondary teachers and educational researchers who intend to utilize survey instruments. / by Carmen L. The development of Chinese word reading: relations of sub-character processing, phonological awareness, morphological awareness, and orthographic knowledge to Chinese-English biscriptal reading. / CUHK electronic theses & dissertations collectionJanuary 2008 (has links)
This study examined the roles of sub-character processing, phonological awareness, morphological awareness, and orthographic knowledge, measured using twelve different tasks hypothesized to indicate these four broad constructs, in Chinese character recognition and English word reading among 536 Hong Kong Chinese kindergartners, second- and fifth-graders. The twelve tasks generally showed an increase in performance with grade level. Confirmatory factor analyses comparing alternative models of these four constituents of Chinese word reading revealed a dynamic pattern of children's latent linguistic or reading processing skills development: The best-fitting model of kindergartners' processing was one that included two broad constructs, broadly termed metalinguistic processing and orthographic processing. In contrast, second-graders showed a fine-grained sensitivity to four distinct skills of sub-character processing, phonological awareness, morphological awareness, and orthographic knowledge. Finally, the latent processing skills of the fifth-graders converged into phonological and orthographic processing. The contributions of each of these initially specified constructs, i.e., sub-character processing, phonological awareness, morphological awareness, and orthographic knowledge, to Chinese word reading varied across each separate grade in regression analyses. The sub-character processing construct was uniquely associated with kindergarten Chinese word reading only. In contrast, the morphological awareness construct was uniquely associated with Chinese word reading in both second- and fifth-graders. The orthographic knowledge construct was uniquely associated with word reading across ail three grades. However, the phonological awareness construct was not uniquely associated with Chinese word reading in any of the groups of children, though it was uniquely associated with English word reading, even with Chinese character recognition skill statistically controlled. These findings demonstrate how Chinese word reading might develop across age and highlight the importance of sub-character processing, morphological awareness and orthographic knowledge for Chinese word reading development as well as the importance of phonological awareness for English word reading. / Tong Xiuli. / Adviser: Catherine McBride-Chang. / Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 70-06, Section: B, page: 3806. / Thesis (Ph.D.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2008. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 151-166). / Electronic reproduction. Comparing the Readability of Text Displays on Paper, E-Book Readers, and Small Screen DevicesBaker, Rebecca Dawn 05 1900 (has links)
Science fiction has long promised the digitalization of books. Characters in films and television routinely check their palm-sized (or smaller) electronic displays for fast-scrolling information. However, this very technology, increasingly prevalent in today's world, has not been embraced universally. While the convenience of pocket-sized information pieces has the techno-savvy entranced, the general public still greets the advent of the e-book with a curious reluctance. This lack of enthusiasm seems strange in the face of the many advantages offered by the new medium - vastly superior storage capacity, searchability, portability, lower cost, and instantaneous access. This dissertation addresses the need for research examining the reading comprehension and the role emotional response plays in the perceived performance on e-document formats as compared to traditional paper format. This study compares the relative reading comprehension on three formats (Kindle, iTouch, and paper) and examines the relationship of subject's emotional response and relative technology exposure as factors that affect how the subject perceives they have performed on those formats. This study demonstrates that, for basic reading comprehension, the medium does not matter. Furthermore, it shows that, the more uncomfortable a person is with technology and expertise in the requested task (in this case, reading), the more they cling to the belief that they will do better on traditional (paper) media - regardless of how well they actually do.

Play Therapy with Low Achievers in ReadingCrow, Judy C. (Judy Carolyn) 08 1900 (has links)
Play therapy in a school setting was studied to determine its therapeutic effectiveness on students' reading achievement, self-concept, and locus of control. The sample consisted of 24 students in two first grade classes who had been retained because of low achievement in reading. Instruments used in the study were the Gates MacGinite Reading Test, the Piers-Harris Children's Self-Concept Scale, and the Intellectual Achievement Responsibility Questionnaire.
Analysis of covariance, used to test the significance of the difference between the adjusted post-test means of the experimental and control groups, showed that participants in play therapy scored significantly higher in self-concept than did those who were not exposed to treatment. No statistically significant differences were found between the two groups in reading achievement or locus of control.
Since research has shown that low achievers in reading tend to have low self-concepts, it seems reasonable to assume that improved self-concept would be related to improved reading scores. The nature of such a possible relationship needs further study. Recommendations were made for integrating affective components into academic remediation programs, and suggestions for further research were made.

Educação literária pela mediação: estudo aplicado no primeiro ano do ensino fundamentalLó, Judithe Eva Dupont 20 April 2011 (has links)
Submitted by Marcelo Teixeira (mvteixeira@ucs.br) on 2014-06-04T18:17:45Z

Submitted by Marcelo Teixeira (mvteixeira@ucs.br) on 2014-06-04T18:48:04Z

Its objective is to analyse how the reading of literary works can contribute for the personal and professional improvement of graduated people, from observation and confirmation of their social and professional activities, and how this can affect others in their community, in the development of reading practice. Therefore, it is important to mentionate that this study is linked to the research project ´Relation between efficient professional and reading TEAR 5´. Among its theoretical basis are: the concept of enlightenment/autonomy of Kant (2002) and Freire (1996); the historicity of reading which is supported in Cavallo and Chartier (1998); Lajolo and Zilberman (1999; 2002); studies about textual/discursive genres, from which are part the conceptions of Bakhtin (2003) and Bronckart (2003) and studies about the elaboration of reading strategies, which are based on Solé (1998). These bases search to focus mainly in the reader´s formation, proposing an ethical and aesthetic view of the reality around, which many times is found in the fictional literature. Equally, questionnaires were applied. These instruments were used with the intention of a representative sample acquisition about the reading realized by the graduated people. So, from this frame, reading circles were elaborated, with the initial objective to provide to the participants of this research a bigger contact with the literary text. The workshops were organized aiming to start from the chronicles, for then, to enlarge the reading universe of the researched individuals, offering other texts of this nature. In this way, the reading circles aimed to not only achieving the reader or turning possible the change of experiences among them, but to engage the graduated people in the realization of a social work with their community. So, the data analysis gives signs of, front of a graduated people group who hardly read literary texts, the need to investigate and to keep up more with which importance is being given to the literary reading, as much at the school as in the community, and from this, to think in the space which is its, in the university. But, for this to be made, this study turned possible to notice and then, to think again in a decisive element of education, which is the teacher´s formation. This discussion is based mainly on Perrenoud (2002) and Rojo (2000).
