The need for mobile platforms has increased in the last decade. Companies offering traditional internet services now want to move their applications on these new devices. But, most of the time, these companies do not really have the knowledge to create such applications and often ask a third party company to do the job for them. In this context, it is difficult to evaluate if the solution developed follows the recommendations of the device maker. A system based on interactive check lists has thus been created for this purpose. This system enables the evaluation of the conformity level of an application with the recommendations of the device maker, thanks to numerous filters that let the user focus on specific parts of the graphic interface. The idea behind the project was first to address some problematic issues with classical check lists and to enable the comparison of several mobile platforms with regard to specific interface components.
To create this system, a lot of information about mobile platforms has first been collected. After reviewing many mobile platforms, it was decided to focus on iOS and BlackBerry, since the company where the research was performed had already applications running on them. For each platform, the major recommandations to be satisfied were identified. Also, to be sure that the extracted recommendations could be compared, a common nomenclature has been created, where the recommandations are grouped by interface components (ex: bars, data input,…) and by the type of interaction (ex: touch screen). After these preliminary steps, a solution for evaluating the level of compliance was created. We favored a check list approach because it offers a systematic evaluation process. To avoid lists of excessive length, filters were introduced in the system to allow the user to focus on particular aspects of the interface.
The implementation was totally realized with open source technologies and open standards. This choice was motivated by the portability of the developed system and by the absence of licence fees. The system relies on web standards and runs on an architecture made of the CNU/Linux operating system, Apache web server, MySQL database and the script language PHP. This software has already proven its reliability for enterprises and for home users. Furthermore, the community evolving around this software offers a good support and ensures a high level of stability. After setting up the development environment, the implementation phase was engaged and took place over a number of phases. The first phase was the creation of the database structure, using the aforementioned nomenclature. The next phase was dedicated to the coding of the different web pages, thanks to the tag language HTML and the PHP scripts on the server side and JavaScript on the client side. Finally, the web page setting was developed using the cascading style sheet (CSS), a web technology that segregates the substance from the style of the web content.
We chose an iterative development model where the end users were involved from the early stages of the project. This approach provides a guarantee that the user requirements are fulfilled and that any new developments will be in accordance with the expectations. Furthermore, the system is such that it can be easily modified to tackle future needs. To be able to understand how we use the systeme, we are reviewing the different steps needed to realise an evaluation. Finally, we have made a study with four users to evaluate the usability of the system and to gather their satisfaction level.

Situation awareness and collective intelligence are two technologies used in smart systems. The former renders those systems able to reason upon their abstract knowledge of what is going on. The latter enables them learning and deriving new information from a composition of experiences of their users. In this dissertation we present a doctoral research on an attempt to combine the two in order to obtain, in a collaborative fashion, situation-based rules that the whole community of entities would benefit of sharing. We introduce the KRAMER recommendation system, which we designed and implemented as a solution to the problem of not having decision support tools both situation-aware and collaborative. The system is independent from any domain of application in particular, in other words generic, and we apply its prototype implementation to context-enriched social communication scenario.

Online Personalized Communication : A quantitative study on promotional strategies to increase customer satisfactionIzquierdo Pastor, Adrià January 2014 (has links)
Nowadays when users navigate in internet they find lots of types of communication scattered across diverse sites. Due to the lack of users’ interests in advertisements, primarily caused by not matching their preferences, today’s advertisements have a low rate of success. Recently, owing to semantic web generation, some companies started to use personalized marketing in communication as a way to turn the conversions around and thus increase customer retention and loyalty. As a matter of fact, the retention and loyalty stages on the internet are, on average, the least crafted of the whole cycle. The customers’ conception of one-to-one marketing is quite ambiguous as they conceive that they need to be more efficient while shopping online but at the same time they feel stalked due to privacy concerns, and oversaturated with non-valuable information. The purpose of this paper is to explore from a holistic view online personalized communication strategies and how they can be implemented in order to increase customer satisfaction thus retaining customers and, in the long-term, gaining their loyalty. The main communication areas the study treats ranges from onsite the online store, where the company wants to sell the product, to offsite advertisements in websites, social media platforms and via email. In the empirical section, the study carried out a quantitative online survey to investigate customers’ perception and complete it with the literature. To answer the research questions, the study identified 19 hypotheses comprising of all primary aspects that define the exploration. The result could be gold dust for e-shop managers to help them maximize the marketing communication factor using personalization. The authors identified potential improvements to motivate customers to register in the online shop, whether communication channels are suited to implementing the strategy or not, and possible aspects to adapt in order to obtain maximal benefits. There were some limitations in terms of an analysis of the companies’ point of view and the necessity to analyze every communication channel more in depth as the study is an initial step.

A novel blood glucose characterisation system for type 1 diabetes / Johan Albert van der WesthuizenVan der Westhuizen, Johan Albert January 2008 (has links)
The correct administration of insulin is a constant challenge for type 1 diabetics. The
correct insulin regime leads to fewer complications and an easier way of life. The
amount of insulin administered must take into account the meals eaten, previous
administered insulin, exercise etc.
A rapid process for determining insulin regimes that is accessible to type 1 diabetics
will greatly reduce diabetic complications later in life. This study researches such a
process. Software is developed to use the ets-concept to simulate blood glucose
levels. From these simulations blood glucose characterisation can be done to propose
insulin regimes.
Data gathered in previous studies is used to verify the results of this process. These
results are compared to factors that describe the accuracy of a person's blood glucose
control. The effects the new regimes will have are used to make recommendations to
the end-user.
Accurate characterisation leads to insulin regImes that will Improve the control
performance of type 1 diabetes. / Thesis (M.Ing. (Electronical Engineering)--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2008.

Staying or leaving New Zealand after you graduate? – reflecting on brain drain and brain circulation issues facing graduatesKaliyati, William Qinisela January 2009 (has links)
Brain drain and brain circulation are forms of skilled labour migration which have a significant impact on New Zealand’s economic growth. Based on their importance, it is suggested that economies rethink how they compete for skilled labour in an international labour market. This research study reviews economic and non-economic factors that influence an individual’s decisions to stay or leave New Zealand. Data is collected from a survey sample of Lincoln University final year undergraduate and postgraduate students, who represent New Zealand’s future skilled labour. The research study employs a data reduction technique called factor analysis to collate large sets of variables into small sets for econometric analysis. The key econometric tool, logit analysis, provides probabilities of graduates leaving New Zealand and marginal effects of changes in key economic and non-economic variables. These key findings, providing new knowledge, are used to engage in a policy discussion in the last chapter. The research study importantly maintains focus on three key stakeholders, the government, the business community and the individual/student when addressing and analysing New Zealand’s brain drain and brain circulation issues.

The treatment of gender-issues and development in the Sierra Leonean transitional justice contextTizeba, Hilda Charles January 2017 (has links)
Magister Legum - LLM (Criminal Justice and Procedure) / Transitional justice mechanisms have become commonplace as a tool for recovery for societies
emerging from conflict and repressive regimes. The extent to which women's rights concerning
development and long-term economic advancement in the arena of transitional justice is dealt
with is almost negligible.
The significance of including development as a means of protecting marginalised groups such as
women has been mostly disregarded in the transitional justice context. Currently, the discourse
on gender justice has placed civil and political rights as well as sexual crimes against women at
the centre stage. Transitional justice mechanisms have failed to give effect to long-term
sustainable and substantive change in women's lives following conflict and periods of repressive
rule.
The core aims of transitional justice are prosecution of offenders, reconciliation and reparations
for the victims of gross human rights abuses. Reparations are usually used as a medium through
which restitution and compensation for the harm suffered by victims are made possible.
Reparations are also deemed as an essential element for the healing and recovery of the
individual victim and the society affected by egregious human rights violations.

The present work has as its central object the analysis of pathological arbitration clauses, in order to propose recommendations for the preparation of complete and fully effective arbitration clauses. To justify the pertinence and usefulness of a practical guide including the main recommendations to be observed in each of the elements that the arbitration clause can contain, it is analyzed the importance of care dismissed in drafting these clauses, starting from the presentation of concrete examples of the defects that can be present in the clauses in order to make them pathological as well as the legal treatment given to defective clauses, both in the cases of soluble vices, when it is necessary prior intervention by the Judiciary to enable the start of arbitration, as in the cases of defects which make the clause invalid and not enforceable.
