The Power of Signs : How Recommendation Signs Affect Consumer Behavior at Supermarkets

Mirbashiri, Clara, Möller, Linnea January 2020 (has links)
Background/Problematization: Many purchase decisions are made in-store and one wayof influencing the decision making process is through signs. Signs are said to drawattention to the product on which they are placed and result in increased sales. Sale signsare widely used to influence purchase decisions, but are there other types of signs that canimpact the purchase decision? Recommendations have also shown to affect consumer’spurchase decisions. However, most of the research within the subject have been done on thepower of social influences from friends and family, e.g. strong-tie relationships. Howrecommendations from experts (e.g. weak-tie relationships) can influence purchases is lessresearched, especially which type of recommendation sign have the most effect. Purpose: The purpose is to examine and map how different types of signs on shelvesrelated to staff recommendations for specific products affect their sales. Method: The scientific approach of the study is deductive and the corresponding researchmethod is a quantitative study with an experimental design and a descriptive focus. Anexperiment was executed in a supermarket on 28 products to test stimuli with differentlevels of information concerning staff recommendations with the use of signs. Result/Conclusion: The result showed only one stimuli to have significantly increasedsales. The stimuli consisted of adding a name of a specific staff member to therecommendation sign. The increase in sales might however have been caused by otherfactors than the applied sign as the outbreak of Covid-19 resulted in changed consumerbehavior at the time of the experiment. The results showed that no significant differences insales could be seen according to the number of alternatives each product had. This mighthowever be a result of the tampered data caused by the changed consumer behavior.

Cogrell, Thobias, Mårtensson, Isak January 2020 (has links)
By using a large dataset of target prices issued on companies included in the OMXS30 index during the years 2010-2019, we examine whether target prices cause a short-term market reaction. By doing this, we take an event-study approach and find a significant abnormal return around the days the target price is published. By categorizing the change in target prices into different quintiles, we also show that the size of the abnormal return is due to the change in the target price and whether it’s considered positive or negative. These results are especially salient when the change in target price is based on the earlier target price from the same firm rather than the current stock price. In addition to the event-study a regression analysis is performed, which supports the positive association between the target price change and the abnormal return. This paper also provides useful information about the effects from quarterly reports in prior studies. Unlike previous research, we exclude all target prices that coincide with quarterly reports and find differences in the abnormal return that follows.

Edholm, Felicia, Classon, Sofie January 2017 (has links)
Due to changed air humidity, wooden houses can be affected negatively by for example deformations and settlements. Hälsingland farms (Hälsingegårdar) are a number of old homesteads, of which seven are listed at UNESCO’s World Heritage List. The wooden buildings at Hälsingland farms reflect the building techniques from the 18 and 19th century in Hälsingland province and are therefore of value both economically and culturally. To preserve the buildings in their original condition and to pass down the knowledge of the building techniques there is need of accurate documentation. Accurate documentation is possible through three-dimensional models created by, for example, terrestrial laser scanning. The aim of this study has been to develop recommendations for documentation of wooden buildings, such as Hälsingland farms, with terrestrial laser scanning and to create the base for future deformation investigations on Slåttagården, a Hälsingland farm. Terrestrial laser scanning was carried out in April 2017 at Slåttagården. With Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) receiver, five points on the ground were measured to establish a reference network. A number of control and check points were measured with a total station on and around the main building. The control points were marked with spherical targets. After the laser scanning was completed, the point clouds were registered in two different ways, with cloud-to-cloud registration and target-to-target registration. Then the point clouds were georeferenced into the external reference system. The position uncertainty was controlled in the software Cyclone by comparison between check points and modelled planes from the georeferenced point cloud. Registration and position uncertainties for the two registration methods differ marginally, which indicates that the use of targets in TLS projects similar to this study is not necessary. TLS is limited by the fact that it is a terrestrial technology and therefore needs to be supplemented with other documentation technologies, such as Unmanned Aircraft System. The study provide a base for future deformation studies at the Hälsingland farm Slåttagården. The collected data have low position uncertainty (about 0.01 m) and are therefore considered to be a good base for continued deformation studies.

An Analysis of the Critical Shortcomings in South Africa’s Anti-Money Laundering Legislation

Williams, Carol January 2017 (has links)
Magister Legum - LLM / From failing to arrest and surrender Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir1 in accordance with its obligations under the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court2 (Rome Statute), to its President acting inconsistently with its Supreme law3, it is evident that the rule of law is under threat in South Africa. Furthermore, South Africa has witnessed the cultivation of a culture of impunity for corruption in high office. South Africa has also experienced an increase in heinous crimes committed against women and children. The South African Rand recently plummeted given that its Minister of Finance Pravin Gordhan, recently faced charges of fraud4, as well as the ripple effect caused by the Fees Must Fall Movement.5 Against the backdrop of the above-mentioned issues that plague South Africa and hinder its development, the fight against money laundering hardly seems of pivotal importance in achieving the desired stability and development of the country. There is a public perception that money laundering is a crime of little consequence.8 This perception derives from the fact that money laundering does not have a direct impact on its victims and in some instances benefits the economy as it increases the profits for the financial sector and results in a greater availability of credit.9 Laundered money arguably is not harmful but rather beneficial to developing economies because money remains money, whether it is proceeds of crime or honestly earned.10 Although an increase in money is appealing to developing countries, the benefits that accompany laundered money are short-lived as the crime affects society adversely in the long run.11 However, where a country fails to prevent and prosecute money laundering offences, the prevalence of money laundering will impede the development of a state as it not only increases the profitability of crime and encourages the prevalence of corruption, but it also causes damage to critical financial sector institutions.12 Money laundering influences the commission of crimes that generate large amounts of profit, namely, organised crime, which is often described as the twin brother of money laundering.13 This is because criminals do not commit crimes to make money only but to enjoy this money as well.14 However, criminals need to launder their money in order to enjoy the proceeds of their criminal activities without drawing attention to these activities.15 Countries that combat money laundering effectively make it more difficult for criminals to launder the proceeds of their crimes. It becomes more risky for them to indulge in their ill-gotten gains, thus dissuading them from engaging in economic criminality.16 Money laundering is a process where the proceeds of crime are concealed and disguised in order to make them appear lawful.17 Criminals are thus able to enjoy the financial benefits of the crimes they commit.18 The pervasiveness of money laundering in a country does not only affect the confidence the public have in the country’s financial institutions but also undermines the confidence foreign investors and financial institutions have in a developing state’s financial institutions.19 A country can, therefore, run the risk of not benefitting from foreign direct investment.20 The financial institutions rely heavily on what the public think about their integrity.21

The effects of analyst’s recommendations on stock prices and trade volumes : An event study on the Swedish market.

Lööf, Filip, Dahlberg, Casper January 2021 (has links)
This thesis analyzes the effects of analysts’ recommendations on stock prices and trade volumes of firms listed on OMXS30 during the three-year period 2018-2020. An event study of 313 recommendations issued during the three- year period was conducted in order to calculate the abnormal returns and abnormal volumes during the event window. Our results show only one occasion respectively where buy and sell recommendations induces abnormal returns significantly different from zero. We thereby conclude that analysts’ recommendations, on average, do not impose significant abnormal returns for OMXS30-firms during the event window. A potential investment value can be found in short selling sell recommended stocks, provided that one obtains information prior to public release. However, the nature of short selling may reduce or erase this value. Our results indicates that recommendations in general, do not contain new information and that the market to an extent, acts efficient. Positive abnormal volumes significant on the 5% level are found on three occasions, hence the majority are found to be insignificant. Significant abnormal volumes of 0,071% were found on the first post-event day of a recommendation, implying a small initial volume reaction. In general, however, the results do not show clear indications of a recommendation generating positive abnormal volumes.

The relationship between personality, normative behavior and fear of COVID-19

Andreou, Alexandra, Osmanagic, Anneli January 2020 (has links)
The aim of the study was to examine the relationship between personality and normative behavior, defined as compliance to recommendations, and the relationship between personality and fear of COVID-19. The study also examined gender differences in compliance to recommendations and fear of COVID-19. The sample consisted of Swedish university students (N = 160). Questionnaires were used to collect data, and it measured personality (NEO-FFI-3), fear of COVID-19 (FCV-19S) and compliance to recommendations. The results showed that individuals with high scores on conscientiousness were more likely to comply with the recommendations. High scores on neuroticism and agreeableness were positive correlated with high fear for COVID-19. Women reported higher fear for COVID-19 and were more likely to comply with the recommendations. These results are in line with previous research, but future research need to investigate the relationship between personality and fear of COVID-19 and if there are any cultural differences.
