This work assesses the constitution of the missionary imaginary from the approach of the writings of the missionary Jesuit Antônio Sepp. It investigates the function performed by the articulated speech in the concerned writings. It argues that in the Sepps writings, the proposition of a legitimating imaginary of its missionary action is articulated. It ponders that this speech presents itself as an element of constitution of reality sense and of an idealized anticipation of a state of things to be effective. The research approaches the writing concept of history and the notion of imaginary as referential of analysis of the elements investigated. It develops reflections about representations of articulated identities from the observation of the other different from themselves. It questions matters regarding the perception and comprehension of alteration. It brings the theme to comprehension about practices and missionary initiatives developed between the indigenous people. It considers aspects concerning to the results of the missionary action described by Sepp in his reports.

Do Proprietary Costs Deter Insider Trading?

January 2017 (has links)
abstract: Insider trading potentially reveals proprietary information, allowing rivals to compete more effectively against the insiders' firm. This paper examines whether proprietary costs are associated with insiders' trading decisions and the profitability of their trades. Using a variety of approaches to identify proprietary information risk, I find proprietary costs significantly deter insiders' trading activities. The deterrence effect is more pronounced when insider trading is likely to be more informative to rivals. Specifically, trades by top executives, non-routine trades, and trades at low complexity firms are curbed to a greater extent by proprietary costs. Examining the mechanisms of this deterrence effect, I find firms with higher proprietary costs are more likely to impose insider trading restrictions, and insiders' trading decisions are more sensitive to proprietary costs when they have higher share ownership of the company. These results suggest insiders reduce trading activities not only due to firm policies, but also due to incentive alignment. Finally, when insiders trade despite higher proprietary costs, they earn significantly higher abnormal profits from their purchase transactions. Overall, this study suggests product market considerations are an important factor associated with insiders' trading decisions and profitability of their trades. These findings are likely to be of interest to regulators and corporate boards in setting insider trading policies, and help investors make investment decisions using insider trading signals. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Accountancy 2017

Use of a Chiral Surfactant for Enantioselective Reduction of a Ketone

Davidson, Tammy A., Mondal, Kalyan, Yang, Xiaoye 15 August 2004 (has links)
The influence of a chiral surfactant and a polymer-supported chiral additive on reduction of ketones using sodium borohydride will be described. Initial preparations involved methylation of (S)-leucinol to give (2S)-N,N-dimethyl-2-amino-4-methyl-1-pentanol (1) (67%). The chiral surfactant (2) was synthesized by reacting (1) with bromohexadecane (71%). The functionalized styrene for the polymer-supported chiral additive (5) was synthesized by reacting (1) with 4-vinylbenzyl chloride. Polymerization was carried out with 10% of the functionalized monomer (4), 5% cross-linking agent divinylbenzene, and 85% styrene with AIBN as the initiator. The activity of the chiral surfactant and polymeric additive were examined by using them as additives in a standard reduction of 2-pentanone with sodium borohydride to yield (R)- and (S)-2-pentanol (3) (20%). The resulting alcohol was analyzed by polarimetry (ee 9.5%) and also esterified with (2S)-methylbutyric acid prior to characterization by NMR. 13C NMR indicated an enantiomeric excess of 5.2% when the chiral surfactant was used, and 7% when the polymeric additive was used.

Rotational Grazing and Greenhouse Gas Reductions: A Case Study in Financial Returns

Hutchins, Blair Henderson 30 October 2003 (has links)
Agricultural conservation practices can have a vast number of environmental benefits but adoption of these practices may not be widespread. If farm operators are able to reap financial returns for environmental services, adoption of these conservation practices could increase. One source of potential financial returns is in greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions or increased GHG sequestration. An example of a conservation management strategy for beef and dairy operations which has the potential to decrease GHG emissions or increase GHG sequestration is an intensively managed rotational grazing system. The objective of this study is to estimate potential financial returns from conversion to rotational grazing and the sale of GHG credits by Virginia beef and dairy farms. The three GHGs examined in the study are carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, and methane. Primary and secondary data are used to simulate financial performance and GHG emissions for three case study farms under different levels of production and pasture utilization. Each case study farm is simulated under three reference conditions to calculate financial performance and three baseline scenarios and a regional performance standard to calculate GHG emissions on both a per farm and a per metric ton of product sold metric. The change in emissions between the scenarios is found and potential returns from the sale of GHG emissions credits are calculated. Results of the analysis demonstrate that conversion to rotational grazing has the potential to increase overall revenues for the farm operation from $4,197.72 to $50,007.46. GHG emission changes for the farm operation do not show a clear trend towards reduction. The amount of financial return from the sale of GHG reduction credits varies from $37.15 to $76.26 for the three case study farms for the initial calculations, and varies from $24.10 to $755.36 once the study performs sensitivity analysis for methane emissions. Therefore, results indicate that rotational grazing can increase net revenues for farm operations but additional net revenue from the sale of GHG reduction credits is small and dependent on the chosen baseline scenario and metric. Follow up research should address the following areas: changes in the cost of on-farm labor, risk of conversion to rotational grazing, increased accuracy of the measurement of GHG emissions and soil carbon, the effects of rotational grazing on forage TDN, and the water quality impacts of rotational grazing. / Master of Science

No. of bitstreams: 1 AnaCostaNeta.pdf: 757915 bytes, checksum: 3232fac494ac242711aca6433e3a9afc (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-05-25 / Mindfulness practices have been used in the treatment of clinical problems, for some time, with the use of the pioneer program of Kabat-Zinn, Mindfulness-based Stress Reductions (MBSR), program that served as a prototype for the development of other mindfulness-based, among them the of Segal, Williams and Teasdale, MindfulnessBased Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), which integrates mindfulness practices with strategies of Cognitive Therapy. From these integrations mindfulness practices have been inserted in the process of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) increasingly, even the two clinical models showing-philosophical and theoretical principles of methods different interventions. Therefore, this study aimed to discuss how the theoretical fundaments of MBSR and CBT are integrated in MBCT, as well as possible reasons and implications of the inclusion of mindfulness strategies in CBT. For this we used articles available on the internet, books and chapters of books on the subject, in English, Portuguese and Spanish, without restriction to year of publication. The theoretical comparison was accomplished through four conceptions that supports the theoretical models: cognition, behavior, and environment of pathology. In addition, he likened himself, through the analysis of two sections, the interventions carried out in TCC and MBCT. Overall, they identified some similarities and compatibilities between the theoretical assumptions of CBT and MBCT, MBSR programs and being a significant difference how understand the cognitions, because while in TCC she is seen as deterministic and causal, MBSR programs and MBCT is just another mental event. It appeared also, controversies clear when one considers the classical cognitive model of Aaron Beck.

On the classification of integrable differential/difference equations in three dimensions

Roustemoglou, Ilia January 2015 (has links)
Integrable systems arise in nonlinear processes and, both in their classical and quantum version, have many applications in various fields of mathematics and physics, which makes them a very active research area. In this thesis, the problem of integrability of multidimensional equations, especially in three dimensions (3D), is explored. We investigate systems of differential, differential-difference and discrete equations, which are studied via a novel approach that was developed over the last few years. This approach, is essentially a perturbation technique based on the so called method of dispersive deformations of hydrodynamic reductions . This method is used to classify a variety of differential equations, including soliton equations and scalar higher-order quasilinear PDEs. As part of this research, the method is extended to differential-difference equations and consequently to purely discrete equations. The passage to discrete equations is important, since, in the case of multidimensional systems, there exist very few integrability criteria. Complete lists of various classes of integrable equations in three dimensions are provided, as well as partial results related to the theory of dispersive shock waves. A new definition of integrability, based on hydrodynamic reductions, is used throughout, which is a natural analogue of the generalized hodograph transform in higher dimensions. The definition is also justified by the fact that Lax pairs the most well-known integrability criteria are given for all classification results obtained.

A Comparative Study of the Effects of State Grant Reductions on Local Expenditures: Empirical Studies in Massachusetts and Colorado Municipalities

Chaicharoen, Siwaporn 05 1900 (has links)
State grants are perceived to mitigate the fiscal disparities among local governments in providing services. However, cutbacks in state grants as a result of changes in state grant policy in different states affect local expenditures dedicated to maintaining service provisions to citizens. This dissertation constructs a theoretical model to explain the extent to which and the ways in which types of state grants, revenue diversity, and form of local government impact local spending and the provision of public programs when local governments experience cuts in state grants. The dissertation also argues that when facing state grant cuts, local governments with a council-manager form of government and with higher revenue diversity will experience reduced change in local expenditures and that decreases in state categorical grants will lead to more cuts in distributive program expenditures. Given the diversity of state and local arrangements, this dissertation conducts a comparative and panel data study to test the hypotheses in 351 and 271 municipalities in Massachusetts and Colorado, respectively, in 2000 through 2008. The empirical results indicate that the form of government and the degree of revenue diversification have a greater impact on the local spending behaviors in Colorado than in Massachusetts. Meanwhile, decreases in state categorical grants lead to more cuts in distributive program expenditures in both Massachusetts and Colorado. This dissertation concludes that the theoretical model explains the effects of state grant reductions on local spending better in Colorado than it does in Massachusetts.

Russia's carbon emission pathways and cumulative emission budgets

Sharmina, Maria January 2014 (has links)
Despite climate change being an increasingly important focus of scientific and policy discourse and against a backdrop of rising greenhouse gas emissions, the Russian government has, thus far, failed to commit to an ambitious emission reduction target based on the latest science. For Russia to develop informed, internally consistent and scientifically literate policies, it is important to assess the scale of the challenge and explore implications of different levels of mitigation. To this end, the thesis derives Russia's cumulative emission budgets and generates associated low-carbon pathways in the context of both a re-developing economy and international climate change objectives (in particular, keeping the global mean temperature increase below 2°C relative to pre-industrial levels). This thesis draws on several disciplines, bringing together bottom-up energy system modelling from engineering and physical sciences, as well as stakeholder and expert interviews from social sciences. The principal methodological approach used here is backcasting, with a number of stakeholder interviews providing a 'reality check' for the scenarios. Given the global delay in acting on climate change, the contextual 2°C scenarios generated are ambitious and extremely challenging. With significant changes on both demand and supply sides, an annual post-peak emission reduction rate of at least 10% is required to meet the cumulative budget constraint; this despite the dramatic fall in Russia's emissions in the 1990s. Such radical reduction rates are well in excess of anything achieved or, indeed, deemed possible within existing mitigation policies and integrated assessment models - either in Russia or in any other part of the world. The necessary emission reductions would involve significant material changes to the energy system. Even with early reductions, to attain a low-carbon energy system in 2050 in accordance with the 2°C cumulative emission constraint, all of the available 'mature' technological options would need to be employed. In particular, short-term mitigation can be facilitated by Russia's large energy efficiency potential and a significant biomass potential. In the long term, mitigation could draw on the country's considerable renewable energy resources. If the peak in Russia's emissions is delayed until 2020-2025, staying within a national 2°C budget constraint will require a rapid and widespread deployment of currently speculative negative-emission technologies. Whilst the suggested mitigation pathways with emissions peaking early are demanding, they are potentially less challenging and destabilising than failing to mitigate and subsequently adapting to climate change impacts of a 6-16°C temperature rise across Russia. The precautionary principle, together with the multiple uncertainties associated with negative emissions, would suggest that starting the decarbonisation process early is critical. Along with other big emitters, Russia has a pivotal role in influencing the future direction of international climate change mitigation and adaptation. Not only is Russia a major emitter of greenhouse gases and a global supplier of fossil fuels, but also it remains a major force in geopolitics, and its diverse territory is both vulnerable and resilient to the impacts of climate change. This unique confluence of circumstances leaves Russia with a challenging dilemma. The country can choose to acquiesce to short-term political and economic considerations, adopt weak mitigation measures and face potentially devastating impacts. Or it can apply its considerable attributes and powers to instigate an epoch of national and global action to secure a low-carbon and climate-resilient future. Whilst the former will see Russia subsumed into the international malaise on climate change, the latter may both quench the nation's "thirst for greatness" and fill the void of climate leadership.

Catalytic Asymmetric Ketone and Alkene Reductions Using Transition Metal Complexes

Källström, Klas January 2006 (has links)
<p>This thesis contains seven papers dealing with iridium and ruthenium based catalytic asymmetric reductions, either of ketones into chiral alcohols, or olefins into chiral alkanes. The first part of the thesis describes how we have designed and evaluated new bicyclic ligands containing either <i>N</i>,<i>S</i> or <i>N</i>,<i>N</i> chelating atoms. The ligands have been evaluated in the asymmetric Ir-catalyzed transfer hydrogenation of acetophenone. The complexes evaluated induced good enentioselectivity of the product. Moreover we have also utilized a commercially available chiral diamine (QCD-amine) as a ligand in the Ru-catalyzed hydrogenation of prochiral ketones, with excellent enantioselectivity for some of the substrates used. As part of this work we investigated, both theoretically and experimentally, the mechanism of this hydrogenation. Based on these results we have proposed a new reaction mechanism for this type of hydrogenations which involves active participation of the solvent in the catalytic cycle. The last part of the thesis describes the design, synthesis and evaluation of <i>N</i>,<i>P</i> and <i>N</i>2<i>C</i>-carbene,<i>N</i> ligands for the Ir-catalyzed hydrogenation of carbon-carbon double bonds. The selectivities obtained in these investigations are among the best reported so far for a broad variation of substrates. A selectivity model for this hydrogenation has been derived and used in the rationalization of the results. As a part of this work we have synthesized and evaluated a new class of substrates, vinyl silanes, and showed that the scope of the hydrogenation reaction can be expanded to this new substrate class.</p>
