Collaborative partnership trends between teachers and educational psychology researchersBeukes, Janna Maree 09 June 2011 (has links)
The purpose of this descriptive and exploratory study was to obtain insight into collaborative partnership trends between educational psychology researchers and teachers, in order to inform participatory theory and practice in future methodology studies. The Community of Practice Framework theoretically framed the study, describing professional communities and the way in which meanings, beliefs and understandings are negotiated and reflected in communal practices. Five symposium and two reflection session presentations were purposefully selected and transcribed for qualitative content analysis in terms of a trend analysis. Findings indicate that collaborative partnerships between educational psychology researchers and teachers differ from other partnerships in that collaborative partnerships between teachers and educational psychology researchers appear to be directed by an overarching philosophy of “care”. Also, collaborative partnership studies between teachers and educational psychology researchers favour methodologies encouraging participation in identifying and addressing school-community issues. In this way, knowledge exchange and the co-creation of knowledge is promoted. These partnerships focus on how education, as well as teacher and learner experiences can be enhanced and be meaningful, rewarding, enabling and supportive. Finally, benefits and challenges in collaborative partnerships between teachers and educational psychology researchers are similar to those experienced by other professionals participating in collaborative partnerships. / Dissertation (MEd)--University of Pretoria, 2010. / Educational Psychology / unrestricted

[pt] PRÁTICA REFLEXIVA EM INTERFACES FÍSICAS : UMA PROPOSTA DE ENSINO-APRENDIZAGEM DE DESIGN DE INTERAÇÃO / [en] REFLECTIVE PRACTICE IN PHYSICAL COMPUTING: A PROPOSAL FOR THE TEACHING OF INTERACTION DESIGNJOÃO DE SÁ BONELLI 14 September 2016 (has links)
[en] This thesis presents a proposal for the teaching of Physical Computing in an undergraduate Design course, based on the Reflective Practice methodology defined by Donald Schon (1983). The study comprises de definition, conception and implementation of a Physical Computing learning environment. In the study, the context of Ubiquitous Computing defined by Marc Weiser (1991) is explored, and a relation between this context and the field of knowledge of Physical Computing (O SULLIVAN, 2004) as an emerging area of Interaction Design is established. The Physical Computing Learning Environment is proposed after a series of initiatives that comprehend the development of academic disciplines, interdisciplinary collaborative processes, and the creation of a laboratory. Subsequently, we present a discussion about the results of the creation of this environment. In the discussion, we investigate how and why the experience in the Physical Computing learning environment was determinant in the definition of the methodological Design processes used, in order to understand what are the characteristics of such processes and its results.

Technology I, II, and III: Criteria for Understanding and Improving the Practice of Instructional TechnologyMcDonald, Jason K. 27 November 2006 (has links) (PDF)
In an earlier era of instructional technology, researchers proposed a set of criteria to help practitioners understand what assumptions about their work could help them develop well-designed instruction, as well as what assumptions could lead them to develop rigid instruction that did not characterize the goals they had for their practice. They named these criteria Technology I, II, and III. Technology I presupposed that using physical hardware improved instruction. Technology II presupposed that using formulas or strategies improved instruction. Technology III was the belief that good instruction could consist of many different product or process technologies, but that technology use alone did not define good instruction. Rather, good instruction was the realization of improved systems in which learning could take place. I used a historical case study method to analyze the major themes of Technology I, II, and III, as well as reasons why some practitioners might limit themselves to only Technology I or II. My purpose was to discover how to help instructional technologists better accomplish more of the goals they want to achieve. I compared the original goals of two instructional technologies (programmed instruction and problem-based learning), along with twelve case study reports of actual practice of these technologies, against the criteria for Technology I, II, and III. I found that Technology I, II, and III can describe the goals and practices of instructional technologists. Additionally, I discovered four reasons why instructional technologists may limit themselves to Technology I or II, and therefore might not achieve all the important goals for their practice: (a) distracted focus (or compromised integrity); (b) status quo adherence; (c) solidification; and (d) deliberately chosen Technology I or II. I also discovered three methods to help instructional technologists to avoid limiting themselves and more consistently practice Technology III: (a) legitimate evaluation; (b) adopting guiding principles for practice; and (c) using opinion leaders to disseminate the value of Technology III. This study also provides recommendations to help instructional technologists use Technology III to help them better develop flexible instructional technology that better characterizes their goals for their practice.

[en] In the current context of an increasingly digital world, manual making is isolated from Design. Taking advantage of authors such as Adélia Borges (2011), Tomás Maldonado (2009) and Richard Sennett (2013), we have the background to begin to understand the relationship between manual making and existing prejudices regarding such practices. In turn José Luiz Ripper (apud COUTO, 1991) and Lorraine Wild (2015) argue the importance of manual practices as a fundamental part of the Design process. This dissertation presents an investigation about manual making and its importance in the act of designing. With specific focus on the use and appropriation of practical teaching laboratories as a complement to theoretical teaching, and manual skills as a student development tool during their training as a designer. Using the methodology of reflexive practice defined by Donald Schön (2000), we understand experimental manual practices as fundamental to the development of the Design student, where doing and analyzing throughout the process become inseparable parts. For the development of the dissertation we conducted a research of an applied nature, with a qualitative approach. Performing an exploratory typology research that appropriated the procedures of bibliographic research, field research and action research. In order to achieve the general objective of proposing practical experimentation within the teaching laboratories, as a form of repertoire construction.

Understanding the impact of a reflective practice-based continuing professional development programme on Kuwaiti primary teachers' integration of ICTMohammad, Hasibah January 2014 (has links)
The main theme of the study is exploring and understanding the impact of an innovative continuing professional development model for integrating ICT into classroom pedagogy. The focus is on the relationship between teachers’ beliefs, knowledge and pedagogic practice in the process of developing and adopting new knowledge and skills to cope with 21st century education. The study explores the 'future schools' primary teachers’ education, in-service training, status, beliefs, knowledge, and skills of using ICT in practice in the Kuwait context. The finding from the exploratory study shows that teachers’ lack of Technological, Pedagogical and Content knowledge TPACK and that this impacts on their capacity to improve their pedagogic practice. The study applied a social-constructivist approach to understand the process of change in the nine participants' teachers' beliefs, knowledge through an innovative continuing professional development model, and stimulating teachers to develop a reflective practice skills focusing on improving pedagogic practice and using ICT. A case study approach was used as the methodology of the study to develop an understanding of the process of change in the nine participant teachers' reflection on and experienced of the effects of adopting alternative pedagogic practice and integrating ICT. The numerous small findings from the quantitative and qualitative methods applied to the six months of continuing professional development involving nine primary teachers come under four main themes: 1) In-service teachers' beliefs and knowledge development, 2) Classroom pedagogy for autonomy with ICT integration, 3) Constraints affecting future schools’ teachers' integration of ICT, and 4) The key principles of an RP-BCPD model for teachers CPD in Kuwait. The understandings from the findings of the study show that the quality of the CPD for improving teachers' pedagogic practice is affected by the socio-cultural context of the 'future schools'. The study shows that the nine participant teachers can develop effective alternative pedagogic practice and successfully integrate ICT, when they are empowered to reflect, inquire into their practice, and learn from each other and from cross-cultural best practice. The unique finding of the study indicated that the nine participant teachers experiences some difficulties with engaging in the change process because of classroom cultural context such as: teachers' TPACK knowledge and competences, curriculum overload, and classroom size. Finally, the finding shows that providing the participant teachers with reflective practice as the base of CPD programme within schools context linked learning theory to improve pedagogic practice.

A Journey from the Wordless is a study of the development of the author’s own professional knowledge. After an introductory chapter on theory and method, there are four chapters treating of the author`s academic training as an artist (Ch. 2), a presentation and analysis of his own exhibitions (Ch. 3), a chapter on a cooperative effort entitled Pompeii in Time and Space (Ch. 4), and a concluding discussion of the nature of personal knowledge (Ch. 5). Questions are addressed concerning artistic knowledge; how it is built and transferred and how it is developed and transformed. Since the author`s own professional knowledge is the object of the research, special perspectives on personal experience emerges that otherwise would be difficult to articulate. The thesis is also a contribution to the debate surrounding artistic research in the visual arts, focusing on the importance of reflection and analysis in art education and creative art work.

What is reflection? A conceptual analysis of major definitions and a proposal of a five-component definition and modelNguyen, Quoc Dinh 07 1900 (has links)
Although reflection is considered a significant component of medical education and practice, the literature does not provide a consensual definition or model for it. Because reflection has taken on multiple meanings, it remains difficult to operationalize. A standard definition and model are needed to improve the development of practical applications of reflection. In this master’s thesis, we identify, explore and thematically analyze the most influential conceptualizations of reflection, and develop a new theory-informed and unified definition and model of reflection. Reflection is defined as the process of engaging the self (S) in attentive, critical, exploratory and iterative (ACEI) interactions with one’s thoughts and actions (TA), and their underlying conceptual frame (CF), with a view to changing them and a view on the change itself (VC). Our conceptual model consists of the five defining core components, supplemented with the extrinsic elements that influence reflection.

MEd research report -
School of Education -
Faculty of Humanities / School effectiveness and school improvement research is a worldwide
phenomenon that has inspired a great deal of literature. This report
examines teachers’ perceptions of a teacher-led curriculum
development initiative currently effective in independent schools in the
Gauteng Province of South Africa, and it describes strategies for
implementation for interested schools. It is a programme that focuses
school improvement back into the classroom, with teachers leading the
changes at their site of practice. The Gauteng Independent Schools
Curriculum Development Initiative (GISCDI) is a teacher-led initiative.
Qualitative research generates an understanding of how the
mechanisms of this initiative impact on the lives of teachers and
students. It provides detailed explanations of teachers’ perceptions of
change in actual classroom practices, pedagogy and curriculum
implementation by entering into conversations with selected
participants. It considers the changes in light of reflective practice, after
involvement in the GISCDI. The report accesses the different
methodologies the teachers implemented in their classrooms, after the
teacher-led interventions were presented to them. It also considers the
concepts of teacher leadership, trust, distributed leadership and
collegiality as being the core elements to initiating, implementing and
sustaining change in practice, to benefit student learning and improving
schools.

Por uma prática reflexiva no ensino de línguas estrangeiras: saberes e diálogos / For a reflective practice on the teaching of foreign languages: knowledge and dialogueOliveira, Renilson Santos 07 June 2010 (has links)
This thesis was conceived as an instrument for the study of the practice of in-service foreign language teachers in Sergipe state. Although considerable emphasis was placed on practice, theory was not neglected, since it is a constitutive and indispensable part of the teaching practice. For this empirical research critical collaborative action research was conducted with three foreign language teachers of Spanish, English and French. The results indicated the emergence of new attitudes by these teachers and by other people involved in education as far as the achievement of a more critical and emancipatory teaching practice is concerned, thus bringing forth a teacher who researches his/her own practice and inaugurating the paradigm of the reflective teacher.
