Divining the martyr : a multimedia installation presentation on contemporary makeover surgery

Tamayo y Ortiz, Renee Isabel January 2008 (has links)
Divining the Martyr is a project developed in order to achieve the Master of Arts (Research) degree. This is composed of 70% creative work displayed in an exhibition and 30% written work contained in this exegesis. The project was developed through practice-led research in order to answer the question “In what ways can creative practice synthesize and illuminate issues of martyrdom in contemporary makeover culture?” The question is answered using a postmodern framework about martyrdom as it is manifested in contemporary society. The themes analyzed throughout this exegesis relate to concepts about sainthood and makeover culture combined with actual examples of tragic cases of cosmetic procedures. The outcomes of this project fused three elements: Mexican cultural history, Mexican (Catholic) religious traditions, and cosmetic makeover surgery. The final outcomes were a series of installations integrating contemporary and traditional interdisciplinary media, such as sound, light, x-ray technology, sculpture, video and aspects of performance. These creative works complement each other in their presentation and concept, promoting an original contribution to the theme of contemporary martyrdom in makeover culture.

Adáuria Azevêdo Farias de Medeiros 22 March 2010 (has links)

Under the perspective of the Cultural History, this dissertation analyzes some practices of reading made on the movement of the Brazilian romanization, especia1ly, in the Campinas' diocese, under the D. João Batista Correa Nery' pastoral govemment, between 1908 and 1920. The aim of this study is to understand this historical context through the social and religious practices of this bishop. This study demonstrates that, in the search of creating a Catholic culture capable of transforming Brazil into a Catholic nation, the social and discursive practices of the Brazilian episcopacy were motivated by religious precepts, particularly, the sacramental doctrine that interprets the Church as a sign of God in the world. In doing so, the episcopacy and, especia1ly, D. Nery, promoted the visibility of the Church through liturgical and spiritual renewal, introducing new elements in order to stimulate the religious sensibility and the materiality of faith. A crucial aspect for the romanization was the propagation of the Catholic doctrine through printed material. In conc1usion, this religious culture guaranteed the success of both the internal reforms, which happened, progressively, in the Catholic institution, and the political articulations made by Catholic Church with different segments of Brazilian society / Mestrado / Historia Cultural / Mestre em História

The development from a Wesleyan perspective of an appropriate model of multi-cultural ministry, from within a traditionally mono-cultural Methodist congregation

Rist, Timothy John January 1999 (has links)
From introduction: The intention of this thesis is to develop a model for multi-cultural ministry, and, in so doing, to enable Trinity Methodist Church, Charles Street, Bloemfontein to provide a comprehensive and meaningful ministry to all people, one that is not limited by the constraints of language and culture but which transcends them. The fact that Trinity is a Methodist Church means that I will be establishing the "Model for Multi-Cultural Ministry" firmly within Wesleyan theology. South Africa has undergone far-reaching political change since the general elections of April 1994. This political transformation has emphasised a need for the bringing together of people across the barriers of race, culture and religion. In this thesis I will be focusing my attention on the latter - the realm of religion - and specifically that of Christianity. Furthermore, I will be restricting my attention to a specific congregation within the denomination of Methodism, within the religion of Christianity, namely Trinity Methodist Church, Charles Street, Bloemfontein'. The "Model for MultiCultural Ministry" developed in this thesis will therefore be 'congregation specific'. The Methodist ChurcQ of Southern Africa2 proclaims itself to be a Church "one and undivided" (Minutes: 1980: 65: para l(a) ), where people from all racial groups can worship God together in a meaningful way. In many respects this is not the case. The years of political pressure that the (MCSA) has endured, in particular the years of legislated Apartheid (1948-1989), ensured that existing divisions between the Methodist congregations became entrenched along racial, cultural and religious lines (Thompson: 1990: 187ff). The Group Areas Act (1950) is but one such example where the National Party Government "divided urban areas into zones where members of one specified race alone could live and work" (Thompson: 1990: 194). The homeland policy (implemented from 1963, but legislated from 1971 in the Bantu Homelands Constitution Act).

The research was conducted with the aim of analyzing the reports of leaders of the Spirit Centers on how to perform doctrinal practices, seeking to interpret, understand and explain these phenomena and their causes, paying attention to the subjectivity and its representations. For this purpose, a qualitative methodology was used to obtain the best possible results. As a research tool was chosen for observation on 11 spiritual centers, and interviews and questionnaires with its 19 leaders. The collected data were categorized and analyzed based on the theoretical foundations of the Sociology of Religion, Anthropology, Spirit Pedagogy and the precepts of spiritual doctrine, codified by Allan Kardec. The study made it possible to see that, inside of "The Spiritism's Universe", there are differences among the practice of the doctrine based on the cultural inheritance, in other words, the symbols and myths ingrained in society and transmitted through time, resulting in a resistance to new behaviors, which directly influences the Spiritism practices. Thus the "reason" for the variation in the diversity of practice is related to the level of knowledge of doctrine, by its practitioners / Trabalho sobre as práticas utilizadas em centros espíritas localizados nas cidades de Recife, Olinda, Jaboatão dos Guararapes e Paulista, com foco na doutrina organizada por Allan Kardec. The Making of the Ahupuaa of Laie into a Gathering Place and Plantation: The Creation of an Alternative Space to Capitalism

Compton, Cynthia Woolley 15 December 2005 (has links) (PDF)
This dissertation is a labor history of the Laie sugar plantation between 1865 and 1931. It explores intercultural and race relations that were inherent to colonial and plantation processes in Hawaii. Particular attention is given to the role of religion in advancing the colonial project. In 1865 Mormon missionaries bought approximately 6,000 acres with the hope of creating a gathering place for Hawaiian converts to settle in. The ideal of the gathering was a metaphor the missionaries brought with them from Utah, and it was a metaphor appropriated by Hawaiians and infused with their own cultural meanings, particularly the importance of the land. In order to economically support the gathering place, the missionaries turned to a plantation model. The plantation they developed was unusual in several respects. First, for most of the plantation's history, labor was done predominantly by Hawaiians. On the majority of other plantations, immigrant labor was used. Second, on Laie Plantation the cultivation of kalo was as important as sugar. Both crops were promoted by both Hawaiians and missionaries. Thus kalo production was one of the chief reasons Hawaiians stayed on Laie Plantation. It appears that many of those who gathered to Laie did so because to a large extent they could reconstruct traditional Hawaiian culture and foodways. Finally, the metaphor of the gathering mitigated some of the most onerous aspects of plantation life. The gathering was for Hawaiians and thus for the first thirty years, only Hawaiians were hired to work as laborers. This created a labor shortage that Hawaiians were able to use as they negotiated labor relations and the continuation of their cultural practices. However, in 1897 the metaphor of gathering began to diminish as a guiding ideal in shaping the structure of the plantation. Hawaiians began to be more dissatisfied with plantation work and increasingly had less voice in choices regarding the land. By the early 1900s, Laie began to resemble other Hawaiian plantations in terms of its ethnic makeup, landscape, and emphasis on capital development. After 1920 very few Hawaiians continued to work on Laie plantation.

Paradis, Marjorie 20 April 2018 (has links)

The sources of secularity : the making of Charles Taylor's theory of secularization

Klopp, Richard 13 April 2018 (has links)
