The Power of Belief? Review of the Evidence on Religion or Belief and Equalities in Great Britain

Macey, Marie, Carling, Alan, Furness, Sheila M. January 2009 (has links)
Yes / A new legal framework has been developed in Great Britain over the last ten years which protects individuals against unfair treatment on the grounds of their religion or belief. This framework regards all the major faith groups, secular belief systems (such as Humanism or Atheism), and non-belief on formally equal terms. There has also been a rapid growth of research interest in religion/belief in contemporary scholarship on equalities. This report provides a critical overview of this extensive research base relating mainly to England, Scotland and Wales up until 2008.

Exploring the indigenous religious identities of African adolescents in selected South African secondary schools

Thamaga, Mangakane Rebecca M. 10 1900 (has links)
This study was undertaken to explore the indigenous religious identities of African adolescents in selected secondary schools in Mpumalanga province, South Africa. The empirical investigation used a qualitative, phenomenological collective case study design. The framework for the study was provided by constructivist theory and African indigenous knowledge and was justified by an extensive literature study. Purposive sampling was used to select forty-two learners from Grades 8 to 11, thirty- three of whom were from African initiated churches, eight belonged to various Christian denominations and one was an atheist. The most significant finding was that the indigenous religious identities of adolescents are not adequately accommodated and supported in South African secondary schools. Accordingly, recommendations were made for affirming adolescents’ indigenous religious identities in the implementation of RE in the classroom. / Lolu cwaningo lwenziwa ngenhloso yokuhlaziya nokuhlolisisa izimo nezici zobunjalo bentsha empisholo esesigabeni sokuthomba (adolescents) elandela izinkolo zomdabu noma zendabuko efunda ezikoleni ezingamasekhondari ezikhethiweyo esifundazweni saseMpumalanga, eNingizimu Afrika. Vybrané psychologické aspekty židovské identity v současné české společnosti / Selected psychological features of Jewish identity in contemporary Czech society

Warren, Jana January 2015 (has links)
This diploma thesis focuses on selected psychological aspects of Jewish identity, namely its content and meaning in contemporary Czech society. It reviews how the bearers of this identity understand and feel positive or negative aspects related to it in their lives. The theoretical part introduces the field of identity in psychology in general and subsequently focuses specifically on Jewish identity. The chosen theoretical model of identity, adjusted to the Czech environment, represents the basis for applied research of this identity. The empirical part is conducted as a qualitative study by means of interpretative phenomenological analysis of in-depth semi-structured interviews. The results mapping contemporary Jewish identity in Czech society should be utilised to raise awareness about this frequently overlooked topic and perhaps also further utilised by professionals who encounter Jewish identity in their work. The religions, through their moral discourse, intend to reproduce a religious identity in their members, which leads them to face the world from a religious viewpoint. Pentecostalism, a Protestant branch in its varied expressions, seeks to imprint such religious identity through its moral discourse. In this paper, we attempt to analyze this religious identity, named ethos . The search for this religious ethos led us to interview a group of teen-agers, aged 14 to 17, in the outskirts of São Paulo, members of the Evangelic Christian Community, God is With Us Ministry. The conclusion is that Evangelic Christian Community, God is With Us Ministry, by means of its moral discourse, is generating a religious identity in these teenagers, visible in their perspectives, attitudes and views ate the world / A principal idéia deste estudo consiste na busca pelo que chamamos de Identidade Religiosa.

Religiosità e processi identitari: aspetti culturali, familiari e sociali dell’identità religiosa dei giovani / Religiosity and identity processes: cultural, familiar and social correlates of youth's religious identity

BRAMBILLA, MARIA 21 February 2013 (has links)
Study1 investigated the self-categorization of religious identity in different cultures, analyzing the difference between an individual and a social level and between a central versus a peripheral religious identity, thus questioning the distinction between and intrinsic and extrinsic religious orientation (Allport & Ross, 1967). Results indicated that religious identity is mainly categorized at a social level by European respondents and at an individual level by nonwestern respondents, and that both levels are central in personal identity. Study 2 addressed the familiar and group antecedents of religious internalization (Ryan, Rigby, & King, 1993; Assor, 2012). Findings showed that parental autonomy support and intrinsic value demonstration predicted children religious identification, whereas conditional regard predicted introjection; religious leaders and groups also influenced religious internalization. Study 3 investigated the relationship between religious internalization and prejudice towards Muslims, analyzing the mediating role of values. Results indicated that identificated religious identity is associated with lower levels of prejudice than introjected religious identity; prosocial values mediated between identification and prejudice, whereas conformity values mediated between introjection and prejudice.

Foerster, Norbert Hans Christoph 18 March 2010 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-08-03T12:21:03Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 1-200.pdf: 3556860 bytes, checksum: 387d9dbcfae1704d703d55a6bf03316d (MD5) Previous issue date: 2010-03-18 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The present thesis is a study of the religious tradition and transmission of the Christian Congregation in Brazil in an area of deep social vulnerability. The study is carried out in the light of the institution and its members. Religious reproduction in the contemporary scene of modernity is difficult due to the diminishing capacity of religious institutions to regular the beliefs of its faithful. It is exactly this capacity of the Christian Congregation in Brazil that is analyzed in a situation of social vulnerability in the front region of São Bernardo do Campo and Diadema. The social dimensions of the Christian Congregation in Brazil are studied in the light of a statistical overview of Brazilian pentecostalism. The social reality of the location is carefully analyzed as well as the specific peripheric situation of the area under study. An ethnography of the worship of the Christian Congregation offers the data to analyze the cultic performers, the ritual process and the function of cultic worship that help to articulate religious identity. Finally, in the light of detailed interviews and field observation the thesis presents an ethnography of its members both men and women, in situations of differentiated vulnerability. The thesis studies both the internal and external social network the members create. The thesis takes a close look to see how doctrines and the practice of the Congregation as transmitted in ritual (ritual as a privileged source of institutional reproduction) succeed in forming the subjectivity of its faithful, understood as the complex set of perception, affect, thought, desire and fear.(AU) / Esta tese estuda a tradição e transmissão religiosa da Congregação Cristã no Brasil, numa área de maior vulnerabilidade social, a partir da instituição e dos sujeitos. É analisada a realidade social local e elaborada a situação periférica específica do bairro estudado.

The effect of Orthodox Jewish education on adolescent identity : a case study

Hensman, Colleen Rose 31 January 2003 (has links)
Orthodox Jewish adolescents develop and mature within a very structured environment. The aim of this study was to explore adolescent psychosocial identity development within Orthodox Jewish education. The secondary focus was the nature of the religious identity acquired through religious education, specifically Jewish Orthodox education. The literature study explored adolescent identity and development (within Erikson's framework), religious orientation and Orthodox Jewish education. The qualitative research was conducted empirically, in the form of a case study of seven adolescents from a single-sex Orthodox school based in Johannesburg. The themes that emerged from the empirical study are as follows: the community; Orthodox Judaism; education; parents, family and peers; adolescent and religious identity. The study indicated that the participants' identity development is dominated by their religious psychosocial world that paradoxically provides the structure that supports and complicates their identity development. / Educational Studies / M.Ed.

Neff, Richard Alexander 15 February 2013 (has links)
The growth of evangelical Protestantism in France is a laboratory for analyzing the effects of globalization on religious identities. Even though their origins can often be traced to the Protestant Reformation in Europe itself, French evangelicals are today part of a world-wide movement where Americans play a leading role. What influence do American evangelicals really exert in France? What is at stake for French evangelicals who associate with their American coreligionists? Our study of evangelical churches in the east of France shows that the United States does indeed exert a certain influence, but it is neither preponderant nor uniform in nature. Most of the time, when French churches develop ties to Americans, they do so in function of their own needs within the French social field. French evangelicals are thus more than just receptors of influence, but social actors in the fullest sense.

Le rôle des technologies d'information et de communication (TIC) dans la contruction des nouvelles diasporas : le cas de la diaspora Ouïghoure / The role of the ICT in the construction of new diasporas : the Uyghur case

Reyhan, Dilnur 05 April 2017 (has links)
This thesis focuses on the constitutive role of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in the Uyghur diaspora. The sociological approach adopted in this thesis not only examines the aspects of politics and communication of this issue, but also allows a historical and geographical study which also takes into account the ideological, social, institutional and organizational points of view, as Uyghur communities abroad start to be visible and create formal organizations representing their cause. The first section of the thesis highlights, through ICT, a complex network of institutionalized Uyghur communities that interact with each other and their countries of origin, and demonstrates that the World Uyghur Congress is the most dominant of these associations. The second section shows, through quantitative and qualitative analysis of the mapping of the Uyghur web in 2010 and in 2016, the contributions and limitations of ICT in the diaspora construction process. This cross analysis sheds light in the third section on the forms of identities that are constructed, such as ethno-national, ethno-cultural or ethno-religious identity, and the social compromises tentatively formed through the negotiation process in virtual space and in the institutions. This study reveals the different purposes sought by both official and lambda actors and examines how new forms of regulation are likely to reach a new compromise between the actors. Presently, however, there is neither a common strategy, particularly vis-a-vis the political dealings with China, nor a common identity, but different identities of the Uyghur migration.
