Au crépuscule d'une expérience génocidaire comme la catastrophe arménienne ou la Shoah, les témoins font face à la gageure d'une reconstruction, tant physique que morale, dans une société humaine aux contours éthiques brisés : tout sens et tout repère semblent ruinés. Chacun affronte un ardu retour à l'humanité et à une identité niée par les bourreaux. Cet itinéraire de reconstruction, qui mène de l'inhumain à l'humain, met en évidence une posture difficile entre parole et silence, qui frappent sur l'écueil de l'indicible. Du caractère indicible de l'expérience génocidaire découle le dilemme invalidant vécu par le témoin tiraillé entre une mémoire sclérosante et un nécessaire devoir de mémoire. L'indicibilité du crime masque plutôt une incommunicabilité : l'expérience est tellement hors de toute limité qu'elle semble annihiler toute possibilité de compréhension d'un tiers. Les survivants optent alors pour une échappatoire scripturaire qui n'est pas sans entraîner une refondation des concepts de réception, et une tentative ou tentation de poser les bases d'une esthétique littéraire inédite, propre aux témoignages issus de génocide, par delà les paradoxes, la littérature servant la vérité. Les rescapés arméniens, confrontés à la négation de la catastrophe, refusent ce recours à la littérature et condamnent malgré eux leurs témoignages à la confidentialité. Seule la culture et le jeu de ses références, lien entre le déporté et le tiers récepteur, parvient à dépasser la barrière éthique que s'imposent les survivants arméniens. La culture, mise à mal et révélée par les génocides, s'avère une force à même de sublimer l'existence la plus abjecte et l'écriture la plus improbable. / At the end of a genocidal experience like the armenian catastrophe or the holocaust, witnesses have to reconstruct themselves, both physically and morally, in a society that has lost its ethical foundations: all meanings or references seem ruined. each deportee has to find a way to get his humanity and his identity (denied by his torturers) back. this reconstruction, from inhuman to human, shows a difficult behaviour between speaking and silence, and bring to the fore the inexpressible nature of the genocidal experience. witnesses experience moreover the dilemma between a disabling memory and an essential obligation to remember. it appears that the crime is more unreportable than indescribable: the experience is so extreme that it seems to annihilate all chance of understanding from a third party. then, the survivors choose to write down their experiences, modifying receipt concepts, and trying to build the new foundations of an original literary esthetics, in which art, imagination and truth can coexist. the armenian survivors, having to deal with the denial of the turkish genocide, refuse to write literary testimony and seem to censure their own works and limit, in spite of themselves, the impact they should encounter. only culture and its references, last link between the deportee and a third party, manages to go beyond the ethical limit that armenian survivors assert themselves. culture, subjected to doubt and revealed because of genocides, is confirmed as a power able to sublimate the most awful existence and the most unlikely writing.

The diploma thesis deals with the analysis of particular detective and Gothic elements in Christopher Pike's adventurous series Remember Me. The main aim of the thesis is to analyse themes and motifs of Pike's work with respect to the Gothic tradition and the development of detective prose. The thesis is formally divided into theoretical and practical parts. The theoretical chapter is devoted to the genre of the detective and Gothic literature, as well as metaphysical detective story. The theoretical part is followed by the practical analysis of selected Pike's works. The practical analysis involves the characteristics of the main protagonists and the influence of horror and metaphysical detective elements on the search of individual identity.

Supporting Interaction Designers through the Accomplishment Support Tool: IxD Companion

This thesis paper addresses a problem of motivation that interaction designers experience when managing multiple design processes while keeping track of many design considerations. Once this issue is described at length, the paper focuses towards a possible solution in the form of a hybrid between creativity and productivity support tools: an accomplishment support tool. This tool is meant to support interaction designers in their experience with managing multiple processes.This paper does not suggest that interaction design is the only profession that suffers from the motivation issue that is described, nor does it deny that other professions could benefit from the use of such a tool. The paper merely attempts to narrow the issue down to one profession so that it may be addressed within the limits of the thesis project.The paper explores the need for such a tool by inspecting and analyzing current methods and digital applications used by interaction designers and mentions how this need is addressed with solutions based on relevant theories from diverse areas of interest. As defining qualities emerge from a combination of theoretical and practical research, case studies are described from a preparation perspective and then as experienced by workshop participants and interviewees.The case studies (which include workshops and prototype modules) are then reflected upon and discussed in terms of their impact on the overall goals of the thesis project. A final prototype in the form of a web application, IxD Companion, is then described through scenarios of use and assessed in the conclusion. Suggestion to future work on accomplishment support tools such as IxD Companion, as well as others, is provided at the end.

The application of a technique for enhancing recall to improve learning in the science classroom

There has existed for many years a memory enhancement technique ("memory pegs") that although having dramatic demonstrable success in some individual cases has not been generally applied in education. The emergence of constructivist epistemology has emphasised the notion that learning occurs as a result of connecting new material with previously learnt concepts. There is, therefore, the implication that effective learning requires some previous knowledge upon which to attach new concepts - and thus realisation of the importance of learning with respect to acquiring factual information as a prerequisite to learning new processes and/or skills. This issue has focussed my attention on the need to ensure that the more physiological skills of accessing 'memory', both for learning and recall, are optimised for maximum learning. Further, there are some indications that the physiological skills of memory access (storage and retrieval) may respond favourably to training and 'exercise'. This study was designed to find out whether or not a repeated 'exercise' using a simple memory enhancement technique would lead to a determinable and statistically significant increase in overall performance in a range of cognitive skills (as indicated by science and mathematics examination results), whether learning such a technique would affect a student's attitudes towards science, whether there was a relationship between the amount of time spent practicing the technique and the degree of effect, and whether the memory technique did actually improve the ability to recall lists of objects.

Paul Verhoeven, media manipulation, and hyper-reality

Does the individual really matter in the post-modern world, brimming with countless signs and signifiers? My main objective in this writing is to demonstrate how this happens in Verhoeven's films, exploring his central themes and subtext and doing what science fiction does: hold a mirror up to the contemporary world and critique it, asking whether our species' current trajectory is beneficial or hazardous.; Dutch director Paul Verhoeven is a polarizing figure. Although many of his American made films have received considerable praise and financial success, he has been lambasted on countless occasions for his gratuitous use of sex, violence, and contentious symbolism--1995s Showgirls was overwhelmingly dubbed the worst film of all time and 1997s Starship Troopers earned him a reputation as a fascist. Regardless of the controversy surrounding him, his science fiction films are a move beyond the conventions of the big blockbuster science fiction films of the 1980s (E.T. and the Star Wars trilogy are prime examples), revealing a deeper exploration of both sociopolitical issues and the human condition. Much like the novels of Philip K. Dick (and Verhoeven's 1990 film Total Recall--an adaptation of a Dick short story), Verhoeven's science fiction work explores worlds where paranoia is a constant and determining whether an individual maintains any liberty is regularly questionable. In this thesis I am basically exploring issues regarding power. Although I barely bring up the term power in it, I feel it is central. Power is an ambiguous term; are we discussing physical power, state power, objective power, subjective power, or any of the other possible manifestations of the word? The original Anglo-French version of power means "to be able," asking whether it is possible for one to do something. In relation to Verhoeven's science fiction work each demonstrates the limitations placed upon an individual's autonomy, asking are the protagonists capable of independent agency or rather just environmental constructs reflecting the myriad influences surrounding them.

A case for memory enhancement : ethical, social, legal, and policy implications for enhancing the memory

The desire to enhance and make ourselves better is not a new one and it has continued to intrigue throughout the ages. Individuals have continued to seek ways to improve and enhance their well-being for example through nutrition, physical exercise, education and so on. Crucial to this improvement of their well-being is improving their ability to remember. Hence, people interested in improving their well-being, are often interested in memory as well. The rationale being that memory is crucial to our well-being. The desire to improve one’s memory then is almost certainly as old as the desire to improve one’s well-being. Traditionally, people have used different means in an attempt to enhance their memories: for example in learning through storytelling, studying, and apprenticeship. In remembering through practices like mnemonics, repetition, singing, and drumming. In retaining, storing and consolidating memories through nutrition and stimulants like coffee to help keep awake; and by external aids like notepads and computers. In forgetting through rituals and rites. Recent scientific advances in biotechnology, nanotechnology, molecular biology, neuroscience, and information technologies, present a wide variety of technologies to enhance many different aspects of human functioning. Thus, some commentators have identified human enhancement as central and one of the most fascinating subject in bioethics in the last two decades. Within, this period, most of the commentators have addressed the Ethical, Social, Legal and Policy (ESLP) issues in human enhancements as a whole as opposed to specific enhancements. However, this is problematic and recently various commentators have found this to be deficient and called for a contextualized case-by-case analysis to human enhancements for example genetic enhancement, moral enhancement, and in my case memory enhancement (ME). The rationale being that the reasons for accepting/rejecting a particular enhancement vary depending on the enhancement itself. Given this enormous variation, moral and legal generalizations about all enhancement processes and technologies are unwise and they should instead be evaluated individually. Taking this as a point of departure, this research will focus specifically on making a case for ME and in doing so assessing the ESLP implications arising from ME. My analysis will draw on the already existing literature for and against enhancement, especially in part two of this thesis; but it will be novel in providing a much more in-depth analysis of ME. From this perspective, I will contribute to the ME debate through two reviews that address the question how we enhance the memory, and through four original papers discussed in part three of this thesis, where I examine and evaluate critically specific ESLP issues that arise with the use of ME. In the conclusion, I will amalgamate all my contribution to the ME debate and suggest the future direction for the ME debate.
