Identidade branca e diferença negra: Alberto Henschel e a representação do negro no Brasil do século XIX / White identity and black difference: Alberto Henschel and the representation of black people in XIXth Century Brazil

Cardim, Monica 09 October 2012 (has links)
This dissertation aims to analyse the representation of black people in Brazil during the XXth century based on portraits produced by Alberto Henschel (1827-1882)s photographic studios between 1866 and 1882. This successful German photography businessman settled in Brazil since 1866 was awarded the title of Photographer of the Royal House having produced a large number of portraits of black people in carte-de-visite format. This study starts from the assumption that these images embody certain stereotypes characteristic of the representation of otherness, as well as making use of pictorial conventions both contemporary and previous to the invention of photography itself. The concepts of identity and difference were used for this analysis, as well as those of representation and selfrepresentation. Through mutual comparison of photographs of white and black people produced by Henschel, it could be verified that the production of the latter sought to meet a demand for typifying images adequate for ethno-anthropological collecting (collectionism). This was a practice with a imperial bias which took place Europe. Besides analyses of photographs, this dissertation also raises a discussion on the nature of the files storing Alberto Henschels photographic production, the criteria which guided their formation, and what they actually allow us to know about the photographer, his work and his time.

La constitution de l'imaginaire de l'Afghanistan dans les récits de voyage aux XIXe et XXe siècles / Representation of Afghanistan in the travelogues of nineteenth and twentieh centuries

Jafari, Belgheis 07 June 2017 (has links)
This research project explores the representations of Afghanistan in a corpus of travel narratives from the nineteenth and twentieh centuries. Overall, we can see great variations but also certain constants in the representations of this country. The Afghan imaginary in the nineteenth century is constructed on major themes related to the status and culture of travellers of the time, all related to the dynamics of the "Great Game" of the colonial empire in Asia; This is why a very particular geopolitical perspective characterizes all these narratives. The work of early travellers, almost all British, was focused on research in cartography, geography and political history. The Western imagination of Afghanistan in the twentieh century differs greatly from that of the previous century. First, the profile of travelers diversifies. On the other hand, greater variation in the orientation of writer-travellers, in their interests and their perception of the inhabitants and places is perceptible, despite the constants. In fact, a dual ethical and aesthetic dimension characterizes the imaginary of the Afghanistan in this period. In general, the representations of this country in the twentieh century, that is to say between the years 1920 and 1978, are characterized by the predominance of an "Edenlike" vision of the country, its inhabitants and its landscape

À la redécouverte de la Palestine : le regard sur l’autre dans les récits de voyage français en Terre sainte au dix-neuvième siècle / Revealing Palestine : the epresentation of the other in french travel narratives about the Holy Land in the nineteenth century

Galazka, Guy 25 January 2010 (has links)
The revival of European interest in the Holy Land in the nineteenth century prompted manytravellers to seek to publish their accounts on their return to France. The analysis of thesetexts shows that these modern-day pilgrims found it necessary not to confine themselves todescribing the Holy Places, but also to reveal the geographical and ethnic environment ofPalestine, to express their feelings, to recount anecdotes. The reader is thus confronted with anarrator who is fully aware of his own identity, regardless of the journey undertaken. In viewof their subjective nature, one cannot fail to notice that nineteenth-century French travelnarratives about Palestine, rather than being part of a well-defined discourse, « speak » withmany different, often contradictory voices, which outline the major differences between theWest and the East, without presenting a homogenous image of one or the other.
