Reflections from an insider researcher ‘doing’ feminist participatory action research to co-produce a research agenda with British Pakistani women; a seldom heard group

Iqbal, Halima, West, Jane, McEachan, Rosemary, Haith-Cooper, Melanie 27 July 2023 (has links)
Yes / Participation of community stakeholders in health research priority setting is an emerging trend. Despite this, the involvement of marginalised groups in research prioritisation is limited and where they are involved, sample sizes are small, where individuals are merely consulted with, rather than coproducing the research agenda. Without addressing power dynamics inherent in research prioritisation with marginalised groups, their engagement in the research process can be tokenistic and the resulting research agenda unreflective of their needs. This article, therefore, aims to generate knowledge on how feminist participatory action research was used to co-produce an obesity research agenda with British Pakistani women, a seldom heard population, living in deprived areas. The methodology enabled Pakistani women to be involved in all stages of the project, culminating in the co-production of an obesity research agenda that accurately reflects their unmet needs. Women’s engagement in the project led to their increased confidence, the formation of relationships that lasted beyond the research project, improvements to their lifestyles, and engagement in further research. Feminist participatory action research may be used by researchers as a guiding methodology due to its ability to improve women’s lives and develop research agendas for women’s health. / National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) under its Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) Yorkshire and Humber [NIHR200166], the UK Prevention Research Partnership (UKPRP) - [MR/S037527/1], the NIHR Clinical Research Network, NIHR ARC Yorkshire and Humber / Research Development Fund Publication Prize Award winner, Jul 2023.

Archaeology and contemporary death: Using the past to provoke, challenge and engage

Croucher, Karina, Büster, Lindsey S., Dayes, J., Green, L., Raynsford, J., Comerford Boyes, Louise, Faull, C. 12 February 2020 (has links)
Yes / While death is universal, reactions to death and ways of dealing with the dead body are hugely diverse, and archaeological research reveals numerous ways of dealing with the dead through time and across the world. In this paper, findings are presented which not only demonstrate the power of archaeology to promote and aid discussion around this difficult and challenging topic, but also how our approach resulted in personal growth and professional development impacts for participants. In this interdisciplinary pilot study, archaeological case studies were used in 31 structured workshops with 187 participants from health and social care backgrounds in the UK, to explore their reactions to a diverse range of materials which documented wide and varied approaches to death and the dead. Our study supports the hypothesis that the past is a powerful instigator of conversation around challenging aspects of death, and after death care and practices: 93% of participants agreed with this. That exposure to archaeological case studies and artefacts stimulates multifaceted discourse, some of it difficult, is a theme that also emerges in our data from pre, post and follow-up questionnaires, and semi-structured interviews. The material prompted participants to reflect on their biases, expectations and norms around both treatment of the dead, and of bereavement, impacting on their values, attitudes and beliefs. Moreover, 87% of participants believed the workshop would have a personal effect through thinking differently about death and bereavement, and 57% thought it would impact on how they approached death and bereavement in their professional practice. This has huge implications today, where talk of death remains troublesome, and for some, has a near-taboo status – ‘taboo’ being a theme evident in some participants’ own words. The findings have an important role to play in facilitating and normalising discussions around dying and bereavement and in equipping professionals in their work with people with advanced illness. / The project ‘Continuing Bonds: Exploring the meaning and legacy of death through past and contemporary practice’ was funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, Grant Number AH/M008266/1. / Research Development Fund Publication Prize Award winner, Dec 2020.

An analysis of the use of the public private partnership model in financing public sector research and development infrastructure in South Africa

Mashele, Makhosini Thaniel 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MDF (Business Management))--Stellenbosch University, 2008. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Economic development depends on a number of variables, including the ability of the economy to innovate technologically. Innovation depends to a large extent on the value, both qualitative and quantitative, of the research and development (R&D) happening in an economy. R&D in turn require various activities and inputs, including human resources, capital and infrastructure. The focus of this study is on the alternatives available to the public sector for funding public R&D. Most of the current public R&D infrastructure comes from the fiscus, which is strained under the pressure of many competing and immediate needs. An alternate model for funding public R&D infrastructure is that of public private partnerships (PPPs), which are private sector-supported initiatives for delivery of public goods and services. These are used all over the world to deliver public services with a high degree of success in sectors such as health (hospitals and services) and transport (roads, airports). This study looks at how this model can be applied in the delivery of public R&D infrastructure, which has not been popular in South Africa to date. A questionnaire was designed to look at five key areas for investigation with regard to R&D infrastructure, namely: the type of infrastructure as a determinant for the success of the PPP; the perception regarding the risk of the transaction; the incentives available to the private participants; the availability of capital in the market; and the effect of regulations on the transaction. These are investigated through the use of a questionnaire to get responses from people who have an understanding of PPP transactions in the country. The results show that R&D PPPs are possible and should be explored. One of the main reasons why they are currently not popular is because they are under-explored. The respondents felt that: the PPP regulations may have to be changed or adapted to be effective in the administration of PPP transactions; the risks for R&D PPPs seem to be high; sufficient capital exists to fund these transactions; the type of the infrastructure being financed is not necessarily a hindrance; and there are sufficient incentives for the private sector to participate in these transactions.

A DIGNIDADE HUMANA E A LIBERDADE ECONÔMICA: AS EXTERNALIDADES DA INDÚSTRIA FARMACÊUTICA E AS POLÍTICAS PÚBLICAS.

It starts with the assumption that the history of ideas through its different stages culminated in the emptying of transcendent values, leaving just the market related ones. The lack of values, coupled with the economic and demographic scenario, causes externalities such as increasing the price of drugs, reducing the quality of products and the precariousness of meeting the needs of the elderly population. It is premised, however, that industrial activity is necessary to ensure innovation and development of new medicines, which justifies state interference in the market, to ensure the public interest. State intervention in the market would be guided by human dignity as the foundation of the Democratic State of Brazil. It happens that, as a concept under construction, human dignity lacks objectivity. Based on this, Barroso proposes the following elements of human dignity: the intrinsic value of individual, autonomy and community value. From this, explores some externalities relative to the price and quality of drugs in the world, in Brazil and in regional perspective (State of Goiás) caused by pharmaceutical corporate decisions taken on the full enjoyment of economic freedom. It is concluded that to address externalities and the needs of the elderly population without compromising own industrial activity (unintended consequence) the state should intervene in the market through public policies, especially in the Research, Development and Innovation (R&D). The methodology used to demonstrate this was the literature on the subject and its correlation with the data collected on price and quality of drugs. It uses the deductive-comparative methodology based on historical and ethical analysis to analyze the data collected. Cases or examples chosen for analysis were taken from the media in general, official publications, academic papers, internet and others, and serve the purpose of exposing the required state intervention in the market on behalf of human dignity, especially in Research, Development and Innovation (R&D).

High-gain metasurface in polyimide on-chip antenna based on CRLH-TL for sub-terahertz integrated circuits

Alibakhshikenari, M., Virdee, B.S., See, C.H., Abd-Alhameed, Raed, Falcone, F., Limiti, E. 05 August 2020 (has links)
Yes / This paper presents a novel on-chip antenna using standard CMOS-technology based on metasurface implemented on two-layers polyimide substrates with a thickness of 500 μm. The aluminium ground-plane with thickness of 3 μm is sandwiched between the two-layers. Concentric dielectric-rings are etched in the ground-plane under the radiation patches implemented on the top-layer. The radiation patches comprise concentric metal-rings that are arranged in a 3 × 3 matrix. The antennas are excited by coupling electromagnetic energy through the gaps of the concentric dielectric-rings in the ground-plane using a microstrip feedline created on the bottom polyimide-layer. The open-ended feedline is split in three-branches that are aligned under the radiation elements to couple the maximum energy. In this structure, the concentric metal-rings essentially act as series left-handed capacitances CL that extend the effective aperture area of the antenna without affecting its dimensions, and the concentric dielectric rings etched in the ground-plane act as shunt left-handed inductors LL, which suppress the surface-waves and reduce the substrates losses that leads to improved bandwidth and radiation properties. The overall structure behaves like a metasurface that is shown to exhibit a very large bandwidth of 0.350–0.385 THz with an average radiation gain and efficiency of 8.15dBi and 65.71%, respectively. It has dimensions of 6 × 6 × 1 mm3 that makes it suitable for on-chip implementation. / This work is partially supported by RTI2018-095499-B-C31, Funded by Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades, Gobierno de España (MCIU/AEI/FEDER,UE), and innovation programme under grant agreement H2020-MSCA-ITN-2016 SECRET-722424 and the fnancial support from the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) under grant EP/E022936/1. / Research Development Fund Publication Prize Award winner, March 2020

Nguyen, John Nam Kha 05 1900 (has links)
The management of diabetes is a major challenge and has an impact on the lives of patients. There are several drugs and clinical studies that are published at an astonishing speed. Diabetic patients also suffering from cardiovascular disease such as heart failure or atherosclerosis are a very vulnerable group of people. Some drugs can reduce the complications of these conditions, while others can increase the disease burden. The treatment of diabetes must therefore be adapted for these patients. A community of practice, made up of doctors, nurses and pharmacists who work daily to manage diabetes, would like to create, and validate a diabetes training tool. We propose the following research approach which is centered on a research-development model with an addition of the Delphi method. In this approach, we will make several consultations to determine the educational objectives and the outline of the training tool. Thereafter, we will build the training tools and clinical vignettes. Afterwards, we will validate the training tools with the Delphi method on a group of medical clinicians, nurses, and pharmacists. The research project led to the development of educational objectives and the creation of a training tool. The Delphi validated the training tool with the Cronbach's alpha index of 0.707 with a 95% confidence interval [0.256; 0.940] with a P value of 0.004. This represents an acceptable and significant consensus value.

(2010- 2015) / A BILATERAL RELATION BETWEEN INDONESIA AND TAIWAN – A CASE STUDY OF HIGHER EDUCATIONAL COOPERATION BETWEEN ACEH AND TAIWAN (2010-2015)

Syarifah Deti Mashitah Unknown Date (has links)
Institute of Human Resource Development (IHRD) is an institution commissioned right under the Governor of Aceh to manage the scholarship program. The aim of this program is to improve the human resource skill as well as to increase the living standard. IHRD has established the cooperation with Elite Study In Taiwan (ESIT) in order to run this program well. ESIT is a representative institution under the Ministry of Education in Taiwan. Its purpose is to provide necessary services for the higher cooperation which exists between Taiwan and other Southeast Asian countries, including Indonesia. Education plays an importance role in one’s development. Also, education is a fundamental right for everyone and key to the future of any country. Investment in education can put people on a path towards good health, empowerment and employment as well as it can help to build more peaceful societies. Inadequate education produces high costs for society in terms of public spending, crime, health, and economic growth. The author is particularly interested to study whether or not more on this higher education cooperation may become a mean in order to tighten the bilateral relations between Aceh and Taiwan. In doing so, a secondary approach has been utilized by examining work performances, implemented policies, and administrative system of IHRD in running this scholarship program together with ESIT. In addition, an expert case study has been conducted to show case an in depth and practical analysis for this research. The study finds out that current scholarship program is not only effective to increase the education standard of Aceh by giving the awardees chance to experience to study overseas, but also bring a number of benefits toward the bilateral relationship between Aceh and Taiwan through this higher education cooperation.
