Intelligent Discontent, Agitation, and Progress: A Time-Series Analysis of National Revolts in Central America 1960-1982

David, J. Sky 08 1900 (has links)
Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua have all experienced significant social, economic, and political changes during the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. Guatemala, El Salvador, and Nicaragua experienced violent national revolts, while Costa Rica and Honduras did not. I tested a process theory that endeavored to account for the origins and intensity of national revolts in Central America. The analysis was formulated in a most-similar-systems (MSS) design. Pooled cross-sectional time-series regression techniques were employed in order to conform with the MSS variation-finding strategy. The findings supported the conclusion that armed attacks against the state were not random occurrences, but rather, that they may have arisen in response to certain economic and political conditions.

Kinská, Michaela January 2013 (has links)
In this work, we deal with theories of collective action. To categorize the researchers used information from the functionalist approach. The aim is to provide an overview of sociologists concerned with theories of collective action, i. e. various forms of collective action. Mainly for this work is the concept of function and its distribution eufunction and dysfunction as two poles. Researchers are closer to those poles. The inclusion of researchers in these poles are still dealing with other characteristics that unite and differentiate. In the first chapters of the thesis deals with the functionalist concepts and theories of collective action. The next chapter is already engaged functionalist categorization and other characteristics researchers. The chapter is divided into two parts, which correspond to two functionalist terms, i. e. eufunction and dysfunction. Revolutions: A Comparative Study

Gill, Thomas E. 01 May 1976 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to describe and then to compare common descriptive characteristics (uniformities) evident within three historical events: the Paris Commune of 1871, the Zapatista Movement of the Mexican Revolution between 1910 and 1919, and the Spartacist Rebellion of 1919. One such uniformity is the fact that all three are abortive social revolutions.

SOBRE ESTRUTURAS LINGUÍSTICAS E PARADIGMAS: AS RELEITURAS RECENTES DE CARNAP E KUHN / ON LINGUISTIC STRUCTURES AND PARADIGMS: THE RECENT REINTERPRETATION OF CARNAP AND KUHN

Silva, Gilson Olegario da 26 April 2013 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / e recent literature in philosophy of science has been reassessing the positivist legacy. One of the items on the agenda is the alleged opposition between the theses put forth by positivists such as Carnap and the so-called post-positivists , such as Kuhn. Although the laer came to be viewed as a critic of several important positivist theses, more recent authors such as Friedman, Reisch, Earman, Irzik and Grünberg, maintain that several of the most characteristic theses of the Kuhnian view of science were already present in Carnap s philosophy. Against this kind of reading, authors such as Oliveira and Psillos argue that within Carnap s philosophy there is no place for Kuhnian theses like incommensurability, holism or the theoryladenness of observations. e first article of this dissertation presents the reasons for each of those readings and assesses them having in view the perspectives from which they are offered. It argues that it is possible to show that some aspects of Kuhn s thesis have a counterpart in the works of Carnap, although those theses vary in importance for Carnap and Kuhn. e second article presents aspects that can be seen as antagonistic in the two views, namely, the conceptions that relate to that distinction made famous by Reichenbach between contexts of discovery and justification.

Friedrich Gentz (1764-1832) : penseur post-Lumières et acteur du renouveau de l'ordre européen au temps des révolutions / Friedrich Gentz (1764-1832) : post-enlightenment thinker and actor of the renewal of the european order in the age of revolutions

Cahen, Raphaël 27 September 2014 (has links)
Friedrich Gentz was a publicist, an expert in public finance and political economy, an Austrian diplomat. After the Congress of Vienna in 1814-1815, he became the "Secretary of Europe" whilst remaining an independent intellectual and an Orientalist, at the head of the Ottoman policy of the Austrian Empire. He was also one of the architects and leading players in the anti-Revolutionary and anti-Napoleonic networks and a convinced European. Beginning with a bibliographical section in which correspondence and unpublished sources are examined, this thesis, in its first part, will focus on the study of the intellectual formation of Friedrich Gentz, and will put into perspective his post-Enlightenment political views in the opposition networks moderately opposed to the French Revolution. Particular emphasis will be placed on the networks he used to convey his political views. The second part of this thesis will analyse his thoughts and actions with regard to the order and stability of the "European Republic". Two specific aspects will be highlighted, namely: that of his role in the theorising and creation of the Concert of Europe as an institution for the maintenance of peace and security; and that most conservative moment in his political thought, his role in the Carlsbad Decrees (1819) and the Conference of Vienna (1820) with its restrictive interpretation of Article 13 of the German Confederation. At the end, both his favourable position regarding the revolutionary movements of the 1830s and the kernel of his political thought, in other words, the idea of reconciliation of extremes and the progressive reform of political systems and constitutions will be considered.
