What gets them rowing?: a comparative study of the achievement motivation of male and female elite rowers when training and racing

Rudden, Carolyn Louise 04 February 2010 (has links)
Elite athletes are highly motivated people. and need high levels of motivation to prevail through the tough training sessions and through set backs (Hardy, Jones & Gould. 1996). Therefore. research on motivation and specifically what contributes to a rower's motivation becomes significant from both a theoretical and practical view. The purpose of this study was to first. identify and understand motivational differences and similarities between the genders of elite rowers, using the framework of the Achievement Goal Theory. Second, it was to further explore these motivational differences and similarities between practice and competitive situations. This study investigated the phenomenon of motivation through a qualitative approach by interviewing 8 female and 5 male rowers from the Canadian Olympic Rowing team. where significant statements were identified and clustered into themes. Overall, there were more similarities than differences between the genders. Both genders had the goal to win, expressed the importance of the process rather than the end product and agreed that their teammates were very important to them and greatly influenced their behaviours and performances. Among the different situational environments, the rowers' responses illustrated that it was not only possible to be task, ego and socially involved at the same time, it tended to be the norm. Results from this study also challenged the traditional framework of the Achievement Goal Theory, including illustrating the importance of social orientation amongst the elite rowers. Several implications for athletes, coaches and sport organizations were mentioned to improve an athlete's performance.

The impact of a single high volume exercise stimulus incorporated into a taper on 2000m rowing ergometer performance

Brotherhood, James R. 24 June 2008 (has links)
The purpose of this experiment was to examine the efficacy of implementing a high intensity, high volume workout into the late stages of a taper, to identify if there was a performance enhancing effect beyond that of an intensity maintained, reduced-volume taper. Eleven male collegiate rowers (age 21.0 ± 1.9 years, VO2max 60.9 ± 5.8 ml/kg/min) completed 23 days of progressively overloaded training, followed by 5 days of reduced training volume. Participants were matched and randomly assigned to either a high intensity-low volume or high intensity-high volume treatment workout approximately 48 hours prior to an indoor rowing competition. Other than the treatment workout, all prescribed training was identical. Both tapers resulted in significant improvements in 2000 m ergometer performance; however there was no statistically significant difference between these groups (Low volume: 5.4 ± 2.7 seconds High volume 4.0 ± 3.3 seconds) Post race blood lactate tended to be higher following taper, however it did not reach significance (p = 0.06) and there was no difference between groups. There were no differences throughout training and taper for hemoglobin (Hb), hematocrit (Hct.), and plasma volume in either group. Mean corpuscular volume (MCV), increased with training and increased further with taper in both groups; conversely, red cell distribution width (RDW) decreased with training and decreased further with taper in both groups. Jump height did not change from pre-taper to competition; however, there was a decrease in dip depth and a corresponding increase in peak acceleration and rate of force development in both groups. There was also a reduction in fatigue at competition compared to week 2 as measured by the Profile of Mood States questionnaire. These physiological and psychological adaptations may in part explain the observed combined 1.8% improvement in 2000m ergometer performance compared to pre-taper test times, however we were unable to discern any differences in any measured parameters between the higher volume and low volume treatment groups. The changes in hematological parameters may be indicative of decreases in erythrocyte age; and the adaptations to acceleration / rate of force development suggest potential improvements under the broad theme of movement economy. This study found that employing a 5 day reduced volume taper improved performance, however, implementing a higher volume, high intensity stimulus 48-52 hours prior to competition resulted in no added benefit and a potentially meaningful (1.4 seconds) yet not significant reduction in performance response to taper.

Esportes náuticos e aquáticos no Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil : a esportivização e contatos culturais nos clubes

Silva, Carolina Fernandes da January 2015 (has links)
This research seeks to answer one central question: how did the implementation, establishment and the dissemination of nautical and aquatic sport clubs in Rio Grande do Sul occur throughout the nineteenth century? The documentary research corpus was composed mainly of newspapers from Pelotas, Porto Alegre and Rio Grande, which is where the first traces of nautical and aquatic practices can be found in Rio Grande do Sul. The processing of historical sources was carried out by using the qualitative data analysis software ATLAS.ti 7.5.6. The sources were interpreted by cross-referencing the theoretical foundation, the literature review and inventoried sources which revealed that the state´s port cities were the main locations for the emergence of nautical and aquatic sports associations. Cultural exchange programs between immigrants and descendants generated the establishment and dissemination of sports associations, as well as boosting the diffusion of nautical and aquatic sports in Rio Grande do Sul. In Pelotas, Porto Alegre and Rio Grande, such practices have undergone a process of sportization together with the fusion of diverse cultures, which later spread to other cities in Rio Grande do Sul.

Abstract: The women's rowing was officially included in international events in the World Cup in 1974 and the 1976's Olympic Games. The participation of Brazilian women's rowing in major international events mentioned previously characterized himself as a framework for unexpressive sports results. Therefore, it is important the development of scientific research that contribute to the process of methodological elucidation training to this sport. At present time, the achievement of results above is related to: an important democratisation of the modality to the society, selection and supervision of talents to a systematic process of preparation for many years. This research aims to organize the collection of data on the progressive sport life of the FB athlete, the first Brazilian rower with Olympic participation; identify lengthwise the steps in preparation during many years, and list them with those described in literature. The research is characterized as a study case with a longitudinal design. The tools used to search for the development of this work were: interview and documentary records (school, the coach and daily laboratory tests). Regarding the organization of data concerning the documentary anthropometry was observed consistently structured sequence of a collection of variables during the school between the years 1989 to 1999, supplemented every year until 2005 with the records of the coach and in laboratory tests, the power average recorded in the tests of rowing-ergometer in various stages of preparation for many years, with the distance of 2000m, the athlete presented 172.2 and 258.3 W, respectively, in the initial stages of preparation and deep expertise. The test of maximum strength (a maximum voluntary dynamic concentric action) showed a steady increase of this variable along the stages of preparation, the highest absolute and relative power of the average coincided with the optimal body mass, or when the athlete was oriented to compete in the lightweight category, approaching the values presented by the global elite, which increased her international competitive potential. The competitive performance registered a total of 56 occasions distributed in state, national and international level. Thus, it is possible to conclude that the organization of the data with its graphic representation and comparing analysis with others intenational athletes, subsidizes the process of training designed lengthwise from the stage prelimiary preparation to superior results stage. / Mestrado / Ciencia do Desporto / Mestre em Educação Física

Rozdíly ve stravovacích návycích veslařů a sportovců provozující crossfit / Differences in the eating habits of rowers and crossfit athletes

Kadlecová, Nikola January 2021 (has links)
The theme of this thesis is sports diet. It is divided into two parts. A theoretical part explains balanced died. It describes the mechanics of energy generation during physical activity and the characteristics of rowing and Crossfit. The focus is on diet in those disciplines. Based on the theoretical foundation is build a practical part, where the statistical data are analyzed and evaluated. The goal of this thesis is to discover, whether there is a difference between rower's and Crossfit athlete's diets. To find out, specialized questionaries about eating habits have been used. Sixteen sportsmen/sportswomen have filled the questionaries. Based upon collected data about their intake of selected nutrients in the last month, there were no statistically significant differences in energy income, protein consumption (neither animal nor plant-based), amount of fruit and vegetables, fatty acid spectrum nor added sugar income. The data have nonetheless indicated differences, eg. Crossfitters tend to have higher animal protein consumption and lower intake of fruit. Key words: crossfit, eating habits, nutrition, rowing, sport diet
