Försvarsministerns försvar : En studie i kriskommunikation

A politician on the peak of his career suddenly sees himself in the middle of not one or two, but five different crisis, that demand a fitting response and a well planned crisis management strategy. While focusing on ethos and its development, the following paper analyses the communicative strategies used by Germany's ex-minister of defense, Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg. Within his one and a half year tenure he had to handle continuing accusations against policy and character. Guttenberg, who in many eyes was seen as Germany's most popular politician and whose ethos, therefore, prior to the first crisis could be described as strong, is loosing his trustworthiness among the military and other politicians the longer each crisis continues. The purpose of this study is to identify the communicative pattern of Mr. Guttenberg, which in the end lead to his resignation, while his popularity continues to be strong. With theories like Benoits apologia strategies, Bitzers rhetorical situation and Ryans kategoria and apologia speechset, the analysis of articles of the German mass medium ”Bildzeitung”, clearly mirrors Guttenberg’s tendency to react offended to personal accusations. While being able to handle accusations against his policy, this continuing communicative mistake provides an opportunity for his critics.

A popularização dos consoles de videogames e a disseminação dos computadores pessoais e da Internet ao longo das duas últimas décadas facilitou o acesso a estes produtos tecnológicos, aumentando também o interesse acadêmico em tais jogos. Grande parte da bibliografia referente ao assunto gira em torno do debate Narratologia versus Ludologia; em que teóricos de vertentes opostas acreditam que os jogos eletrônicos podem ser compreendidos ou somente por seus aspectos lúdicos, diretamente ligados à ação do jogador (gameplay); ou apenas pelos narrativos. Ao longo da presente dissertação, apresentaremos os pensamentos dos principais ludologistas (Jesper Juul, Gonzalo Frasca, Espen Aarseth) e também dos narratologistas, dos quais a americana Janet Murray é a principal expoente. Nosso objetivo, ao descrever as duas vertentes, é demonstrar a necessidade de incorporá-las para uma compreensão mais ampla dos jogos eletrônicos, contrapondo o caráter excludente como as duas correntes teóricas vêm sendo concebidas. Desta forma, nossa hipótese é de que somente levando em conta o gameplay e o potencial narrativo é que se pode analisar os videogames no que Marie-Laure Ryan, Santaella e Galloway consideram sua característica mais distintiva: a interatividade. Para isto, utilizaremos o conceito de “narrativas interativas” de Ryan (2009), que propõe que a narratividade nos videogames é diretamente ligada ao gameplay, já que cada elemento narrativo é construído a partir de ações desempenhadas pelo jogador e materializadas no interior do jogo através de um avatar; e, por outro lado, cada ação a ser tomada é determinada pelo enredo narrativo que se forma. Assim, lúdico e narrativo são elementos inextricáveis para a compreensão dos jogos eletrônicos em todo potencial. Como exemplo desta tendência, analisaremos “Red Dead Redemption”, jogo para Xbox 360 criado pela Rockstar Games, que acreditamos agregar todas as características das “narrativas interativas” de Ryan. / This dissertation analyzes videogames from their narrative potential. The popularity of videogame consoles and the spread of personal computers and the Internet over the past two decades have facilitated the access to these technological products, also causing the academic interest in such games to increase. Much of the literature on the subject revolves around the debate “Narratology versus Ludology”, where theorists of opposing sides believe that electronic games can be understood either by their ludic aspects, directly related to the action of the player (gameplay), or only by its narrative characteristics. Throughout this thesis, we present the thoughts of the main Ludologists (Jesper Juul, Gonzalo Frasca, Espen Aarseth) and the Narratologists, of which Janet Murray is the principal exponent. Our goal in describing the two theories is to demonstrate the need to incorporate them both in order to achieve a broader understanding of electronic games, unlike the opposition between the two theoretical approaches proposes. Hence, our hypothesis is that it is only taking into account both gameplay and the narrative potential of videogames that one can analyze these games in which Marie-Laure Ryan, Santaella and Galloway consider its most distinctive feature: interactivity. To do so, we use Ryan’s concept of "interactive narratives" (2009), which proposes that the narrative in video games is directly related to gameplay, as each narrative element is constructed from actions taken by the player and materialized inside the game through an avatar, and, moreover, every action taken is determined by the narrative plot that is designed. As a consequence, ludic and narrative elements are inextricable to the understanding of electronic games in their full potential. As an example of this trend, we will analyze the game "Red Dead Redemption" for Xbox 360, created by Rockstar Games, which we believe aggregates all the characteristics of Ryan’s "interactive narratives".

This creative nonfiction dissertation is a memoir that probes the complex life and death of the author’s father, who became addicted in his late forties to crack cocaine. While the primary concerns are the reasons and ways in which the father changed from a family man into a drug addict, the memoir is also concerned with themes of family life, childhood, and grief. After his father’s death, the author moves to Las Vegas and experiences similar addiction issues, which he then explores to help shed light on his father’s problems. To enrich the investigation, the author draws from eclectic sources, including news articles, literature, mythology, sociology, religion, music, TV, interviews, and inherited objects from his father. In dissecting the life of his father, the author simultaneously examines broader issues surrounding modern fatherhood, such as cultural expectations, as well as the problems of emptiness, isolation, and spiritual deficiency.

Special emphasis will be given to new casting and directing styles I have developed to encourage the strongest possible performances. I will then evaluate the success of the decisions I made.

Lake Pleasant

Lake Pleasant, a work for wind ensemble, receives its title from the composer’s memories of visiting a cottage on a small lake that straddles the border of Indiana and Michigan. The primary influence of the piece derives from the howling sound produced by the echoes of traffic noise one hears while standing on the opposite side of the lake in the quiet of night. The recollection of this soundscape takes the musical form of nine clarinets spread throughout the audience accompanied by pairs of flutes, oboes, saxophones, trumpets, and a single piccolo. While the placement of performers in the audience allows for the music to emulate the atmosphere evoked by the work’s influence through the use of physical space and timbral similarities, the spacial relationships explored through the music also serve as primary structural elements.

Structural Design of Flexible ETFE Atrium Enclosures Using a Cable-Spring Support System

This research designed and analyzed an innovative structural support system for ETFE (ethylene tetrafluoroethylene) atrium roofs between buildings. A cable-spring system was conceived, which is much lighter and more flexible than arches, frames, trusses, and beams which usually support ETFE roofs. Flexibility was a desirable property because the displacements may vary significantly among the buildings supporting the ETFE atrium roof during wind and seismic loading. The springs in the cable-spring system allow large differential displacements without exerting large support reactions on the buildings. The flexibility of the cable-spring system was compared to the cable-strut system which is used to support many other roofs. The concept of the cable-spring system was demonstrated by the design of an example problem and an experimental model. The example problem consisted of 20 m roof spans between buildings and differential displacements up to 8.5 cm. Conceptual design of the system consists of an array of intersecting cable-spring trusses that provide adequate drainage, venting, and repeatability. Detailed design includes the design of the ETFE cushion, truss depth, spring stiffness, cable sizes, and the telescoping tubes that enclose the springs. The ETFE cushions were analyzed with the MPanel software which is based on a computational process known as dynamic relaxation. The cable-spring trusses were analyzed using the principles of statics and large displacement geometry. Design curves and formulas were produced for spring sizes. A small scale experimental model was built to demonstrate the flexibility of the cable-spring support system. The weight of the atrium roof was estimated to be about 2.28 psf for the example problem. The analysis revealed that for the same spans and differential support movements the cable-spring support system had a 71% reduction in support reactions when compared to a cable-strut system.

Following the government's decision to resume conscription, it is now both women and men’s obligation to conduct military basic training if they are called upon. The government's intention is that the commitment, primarily should be based on volunteers and, secondarily, by conscription through law. To create conditions for more individuals to find themselves motivated to voluntarily complete basic military training, it is therefore relevant to examine what makes an individual motivated while others do not. Additionally, it is also interesting to examine to which extent the initial information from “Plikt- och prövningsverket” (conscription office) and from the Swedish Armed Forces' website is encouraging from a motivational perspective. Based on the results, a reasoning can be made about what potential effects there are with the design of the information document and whether there are any opportunities for improvement from a motivational perspective. The results show that the material contains several examples of motivational factors, but that there are opportunities for further improvements to generate greater individual motivation.

Ryan White: A Geospatial Analysis of his Correspondence

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / The letters Ryan White received over the course of his diagnosis, illness, and eventual death show a spatial distribution that reflected the United States’ response to Ryan’s condition. Ryan was diagnosed with AIDS in December of 1984 at the height of the epidemic, and the panic that surrounded it. In 2000, the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis accessioned a selection of letters sent to Ryan White and his mother, from 1980 to 1993. The expanded incorporation of these letters into the museum’s “Power of Children” gallery will introduce museum visitors to the public view on Ryan and the role he played in developing the public perception and awareness of AIDS in the 1980’s. Originally, it was anticipated that the distribution and number of letters Ryan received directly related to the concentration and spread of AIDS cases around the US. This research assumed that the AIDS community would have been more supportive and empathetic of Ryan’s diagnosis, resulting in those populations sending a higher number of letters. This assumption was also informed by the fact that the highest number of AIDS cases were in areas with large populations such as New York City, Los Angeles, and Miami. Yet findings showed relatively few letters were coming from the populated coasts where AIDS was more prevalent, and many more letters than expected came from areas with lower populations across the US. Ryan was one of the first children to go public with his AIDS diagnosis, which sparked strong reactions among people throughout the United States. Ryan’s correspondence and the outpouring of support he received allows insight into the multifaceted reaction to the AIDS crisis, especially from young people. Before Ryan became associated with the AIDS epidemic, this disease was seen primarily as an urban, gay, and drug-user related issue. The goal of this research is to gain further understanding of society’s shifting response to Ryan and AIDS during the 1980’s, by placing these letters in their social and geographic context.

Active Noise Control of a Two-Fan Exhaust-Mounted Array Using Near-Field Control Sources and Error Sensors

Multiple fans are sometimes used in an array configuration to cool various types of electronic equipment. In addition to adding another noise source, using two fans with closely spaced blade passage frequencies (BPF) can create an annoying beat frequency. A two fan array with each fan having a different BPF was considered. The fans were theoretically modeled at the BPF and first harmonics. Each fan has two acoustic paths to the far field. Thus, each fan was modeled as a two source array. The first control configuration consisted of one control filter using six control sources and six error sensors in a fully coupled control system designed to control both fans simultaneously. The second configuration used two independent controllers with three control sources and three error sensors, one controller per fan. Experimentally, the averaged narrow band reduction of the BPFs and the second harmonic of the two independent controllers were 15.6 and 7.4 dB respectively, compared to a reduction of 14.4 and 5.7 dB at the two frequencies using a single control loop. The results suggest that independent controllers perform better than the single control loop for the fan array studied. Optimization of active noise control systems has increased performance but sometimes with decreased robustness. Two control source configurations for the sound power reduction of a simple source were analyzed by modeling the control systems. The two control source configurations were four symmetric control sources surrounding the noise source and an optimized linear array of four control sources. Simulation results show the linear array control source configuration is more sensitive to microphone placement errors, with a 20-33 dB reduction in attenuation for a microphone placement error of 2 mm compared to a 0.8 dB drop in attenuation for the symmetric case. The linear array configuration was found to be more sensitive to the microphone placement errors compared to the symmetric configuration. A 2.5 mm change in one microphone position causes an average of 6 dB loss in attenuation for the linear array configuration compared to a 0.6 dB loss for the symmetric configuration.

Field Algae Measurements Using Empirical Correlations at Deer Creek Reservoir

Deer Creek Reservoir in Utah has a history of high algae concentrations. Despite recent nutrient reduction efforts, seasonal algae continue to present problems. Cost effective, accurate, and comprehensive monitoring is important to understand the reservoir processes driving this problem and characterizing the algae spatial and temporal distributions are an important part of this effort. Current laboratory methods for accurately measuring algae are expensive and time consuming and are based on water samples taken in the field and transported to the laboratory. This approach only provides data for relatively few point samples because of the time and expense of sample collection and analysis. These relatively few samples do not describe the complex spatial and temporal trends in the algal data. Algae exhibit non-uniform distributions, especially in the vertical direction. In situ probes are able to measure chlorophyll-a and provide a less expensive measuring alternative than laboratory methods. These probes provide relatively quick, high resolution vertical profile measurements, which allows for more comprehensive horizontal and temporal sampling. To have confidence in the probe data, good correlations between in situ chlorophyll-a measurements and laboratory algae or chlorophyll measurements are important, but these correlations can be reservoir and time dependant as reservoir conditions change. Therefore, they must be developed for each study site. This study reports on efforts at Deer Creek Reservoir to develop these correlations and provide a general description of the dynamic reservoir algal processes. I found that chlorophyll-a is weakly correlated to most algae species in the reservoir. However, it correlated well with total phytoplankton biovolume and the dominant algal species, which for this study was the diatom. Variations in correlation strength among the several algae species was assumed to most likely be affected by environmental factors, sample methods, algae species diversity, and the accuracy of the optical chlorophyll-a sensor. The data analysis indicate that the field methods used to obtain laboratory samples may have been a significant source of error because of the difficulty of matching the location of a probe measurement to the location of a sample. Field samples were not taken at the same depths as probe measurements and field samples from two locations were either mixed before laboratory analysis or the sample was a composite over a 2-meter range. Based on my observations, I have made several recommendations to improve the accuracy of the correlation between algae and chlorophyll-a.
