Using iPhones to Enhance and Reduce Face-to-Face Home Safety Sessions

Jabaley, Julie 18 November 2009 (has links)
Innovative handheld technologies are changing the possibilities for delivering public health interventions. The present research describes a preliminary examination of the effects of iPhone™ both as an assessment tool for data collection and as an enhancement to an in-home child safety intervention. Three families with children under age seven were trained to use an iPhone to video targeted rooms in their homes following SafeCare® safety module intervention implementation during which rooms were secured for accessible safety and health hazards. The iPhone was used to communicate feedback, logistical information, and clarification of safety content. The effectiveness of iPhone and iPhone video was examined using a multiple baseline design across settings replicated across families. All rooms across subjects demonstrated significant decreases in home hazards. Face-to-face (F2F), in-home time of the home visitor was progressively reduced and replaced by video data collection over the course of the intervention. These data suggest that handheld technology tools are a promising means of data collection for in situ safety interventions and for augmenting interaction during intervention. Implications of these findings for reducing costs of F2F intervention as high-quality handheld video capabilities become increasingly ubiquitous and for engaging and retaining participants are discussed.

Mylėk save / Love Yourself

Keraitė, Nora 03 September 2010 (has links)
The main issue analysed in this work is the harm done to a human body by the six factors: drugs, genetically modified organisms (GMO), air pollution, cosmetics, radiation and preservatives. Health is the most important human value and the majority of nowadays world solutions may reduce it faster than we think it could. Hereinafter these main factors crippling our health will be shortly discussed.

The perceptions of HIV negative pregnant women towards HIV preventative sexual behaviour in one of the regional hospitals in Durban.

Msebeni, Sibongile. January 2005 (has links)
The aim of the study was to explore the perceptions of the HIV negative pregnant women, after their hiv negative results, towards preventive sexual behaviour. Methodology: A qualitative approach was used in exploring the perceptions of hiv negative pregnant women and describing their behaviour according to the findings. Fifteen participants were interviewed. Two semi - structured interviews were conducted with each participant, an initial interview and a verifying interview, for the purpose of saturation and verification. Each interview lasted for 20 - 30 minutes. The interviews were recorded and transcribed. Manual data analysis was used to identify categories and themes. Findings: The study revealed that the participants knew what the negative status entailed. They were also aware that there is a chance of hiv negative person being infected by hiv virus if they do not engage in preventive sexual behaviour. Furthermore, they had also disclosed their hiv negative status to their partners and most of the partners refused to go for testing. Though the participants believed that it was necessary to use condoms even if they were hiv negative, most of them had not use condoms during their last sexual intercourse. Reasons for not engaging in preventive sexual behaviour were revealed by the study. Recommendations were suggested for clinical practice, nursing education, management and research. / Thesis (M.A.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, 2005.

The Determinants of Good Newborn Care Practices in the Rural Areas of Nepal.

Tuladhar, Sabita January 2010 (has links)
Newborn morbidity and mortality remains high despite a remarkable decline in the infant mortality and under five mortality rates in Nepal over the last decade (1996-2006). Research shows that newborns’ health outcome is associated with maternal and other factors. This study was designed to understand the factors that have an impact on three good newborn care practices: safe cord cutting, early breastfeeding and delayed bathing. The study used the interview data of 815 married women aged 15-49 years who delivered a live baby between February 2008 and February 2009, collected for the baseline survey of the Community-Based Maternal and Newborn Health program implemented in the Sindhuli district of Nepal. The mean age of the sample women was 26 years. Two-thirds of them were from disadvantaged indigenous caste/ethnicity groups, about 70% were uneducated and the majority were poor. Safe cord cutting, early breastfeeding and delayed bathing practices were studied for 803, 810 and 812 women respectively and 70.7%, 46.7%, and 16.6% of the eligible samples demonstrated the practices respectively. The logistic regression method was used to examine the association of independent factors with the outcome variables. Social gradient was found to be associated with all three practices. Rich women were more likely to demonstrate good practices and bearing a child at the prime age (20-34 years) was likely to result in safe cord cutting. Disadvantaged indigenous and ‘other’ caste/ethnicity women demonstrated unsafe cord cutting practices and dalit caste/ethnicity women demonstrated poor bathing practices. Maternal knowledge also emerged as a strong predictor of early breastfeeding and delayed bathing practices. Antenatal care from a SBA determined good breastfeeding and advice from a FCHV determined good bathing practices. The results showed that the uptake of antenatal and delivery services from a skilled birth attendant is unacceptably low in rural Nepal, which is a challenge for meeting the millennium development goals. The study recommends programmes for improving economic status as a key to improving newborn care practices. As the vast majority of the deliveries are still assisted by traditional birth attendants; including them in maternal health programmes is crucial. Increasing women’s access to a skilled birth attendant and boosting the spirit of the FCHVs to increase their efficiency is also recommended. Future research on newborn health should focus on identifying other determinants of newborn care practices and survival. Qualitative studies to understand the cultural perspectives of newborn care practices are also recommended.

The impact of cardinal rules on employee safety behaviour at power stations in Mpumalanga / Chauke, T.L.

Chauke, Tinyiko Lourence January 2011 (has links)
Occupational risk management can be a catalyst in generating superior returns for all stakeholders on a sustainable basis. A number of companies in South Africa have implemented Cardinal Rules of Safety adopted from international companies to ensure the safety of their employees. The purpose of this study was to measure the impact of the cardinal rules on employee safety behaviour implemented at power stations in Mpumalanga. The empirical study was done by using a questionnaire as measuring instrument. The questionnaire was developed from a literature review and contains questions and items relevant to the initial research problem. The questionnaire comprised of five–point Likert scale type questions. The convenience sampling method was applied identifying 90 participants at three different power stations in Mpumalanga taking part in the study. Statistical analysis was performed by the Statistical Consulting Service of the North–West University using SPSS. Cronbach’s alpha co–efficients was used to determine the reliability of the factors. Descriptive statistics (Mean, standard, deviation, were used in the compiling of the profile of the results. While Spearman’s rho correlation coefficient was calculated to identify practically significant associations between variables and factors The research findings suggest that there is practical significant correlation between the factors that were measured. The opinion given by respondents suggests that cardinal rules of safety were implemented, given all the necessary support by management and enforced throughout the organisation. / Thesis (MBA)--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2012.
