The Role of Parenting Style, Maladaptive Schemas, and Experiential Avoidance in Predicting Disordered Eating

Deveau, Stephanie A. 15 July 2013 (has links)
Harsh and punitive parenting styles have been historically associated with the development of eating pathology. More recently, early maladaptive schemas and experiential avoidance have also been implicated in disordered eating. Maladaptive schemas are cognitive scripts that are theorized to be learned within maladaptive environments and repeated throughout an individual’s life. Experiential avoidance involves a tendency to avoid negative emotional experiences through maladaptive strategies. Both maladaptive schemas and experiential avoidance have been implicated in the development of many psychological issues, including eating pathology. The current study attempts to bridge these bodies of literature to develop a model in which cognitive and emotional processes relate to perceived maladaptive parenting styles and the development of eating pathology. Two studies are presented within the current dissertation. The first is a survey based quantitative study that assesses the influence of perceived authoritarian parenting style on the development of binge and restrictive eating pathology. This study examines the mediating role of maladaptive schemas and the moderating role of experiential avoidance. Results of the study demonstrate that specific maladaptive schemas (i.e., mistrust/abuse, emotional deprivation, and defectiveness/shame) mediate the relation between perceived authoritarian parenting and restrictive eating, particularly for those participants with higher levels of experiential avoidance. A different set of maladaptive schemas (i.e., defectiveness/shame, subjugation, and insufficient self-control/self-discipline) was found to significantly mediate the relation between perceived authoritarian parenting and binge eating pathology. Within this model however, low levels of experiential avoidance did not mitigate the effects of maladaptive schemas on the development of binge eating. Using a thematically driven exploratory qualitative analysis in the second study, similar themes were observed in a series of interviews, highlighting the influence of parenting style, participant characteristics, and specific food/weight related issues in the development of disordered eating. New and interesting themes not addressed within Study 1 emerged, providing insight relevant to future clinical and theoretical work. The results of both studies emphasize the role of particular cognitive and emotional factors in the development of different forms of eating pathology. Implications for theory and clinical practice are discussed.

Film och mening : En receptionsstudie om spelfilm, filmpublik och existentiella frågor

Axelson, Tomas January 2008 (has links)
In what ways and under what circumstances can a movie be a resource for individuals and their thoughts about existential matters? This central research question has been investigated using a both quantitative and qualitative approach. First, a questionnaire was distributed amongst 179 Swedish students to provide a preliminary overview of film habits. The questionnaire was also used as a tool for selecting respondents to individual interviews. Second, thirteen interviews were conducted, with viewers choosing their favourite movie of all time. In the study socio-cognitive theory and a schema-based theoretical tool is adopted to analyze how different viewers make use of movies as cultural products in an interplay between culture and cognition in three contexts; a socio-historic process, a socio-cultural interaction with the world and inner psychological processes. Summarizing the interviews some existential matters dominated. Matters of immanent orientation were in the foreground. Transcendental questions received much less attention. Summarizing the schema-based theoretical question, assessing which cognitive schema structures the narratives were processed through, the study found an emphasis on a combination of two main cognitive structures, person schema and self schema. Detailed person schematic cognitive processes about fictitious characters on the screen and their role model behaviour were combined by the respondents with dynamic cross-references to detailed self schematic introspections about their own characteristics, related to existential matters at some very specific moments in their lives. The viewers in the study seem to be inspired by movies as a mediated cultural resource, promoting the development of a personal moral framework with references to values deeply fostered by a humanistic tradition. It is argued that these findings support theories discussing individualised meaning making, developing ‘self-expression values’ and ‘altruistic individualism’ in contemporary western society.

Įmonių vidinė komunikacija valdymo struktūroje / Internal communication of organisations in management structure

Tamutytė, Jolanta 17 July 2014 (has links)
[toliau žr. visą tekstą] / In the final thesis of master degree named “Internal communication of organisations in management structure” the effectiveness of internal communication of organizations in management structure is analyzed from both practical and theoretical side. Also, joint models of effective internal communication process and management structure by types were created. For more information, in the theoretical part of this thesis communication, organizational communication and internal communication definitions, functions, objectives and tasks are over viewed. Also, communication channels, organizational structure models and connections between internal communication and management structure, it‘s process integration inside the scheme of management structure is analyzed. According to the main goal to create the joint model of internal communication process and management structure, firstly theoretical models of matrix, functional and divisional management structures were created. These models show matrix/functional/divisional organizational structure schemes with in literature by authors described horizontal (“upward”, “downward”) and vertical communication flows, also feedback. In order to improve and to substantiate these models there was a decision to check them practically. So, empirical part of this thesis starts with analysis of 30 different randomly selected companies with formally approved schemes of management structure. These schemes were grouped in to 3 groups of... [to full text]

Types for XML with Application to Xcerpt

Wilk, Artur January 2008 (has links)
XML data is often accompanied by type information, usually expressed by some schema language. Sometimes XML data can be related to ontologies defining classes of objects, such classes can also be interpreted as types. Type systems proved to be extremely useful in programming languages, for instance to automatically discover certain kinds of errors. This thesis deals with an XML query language Xcerpt, which originally has no underlying type system nor any provision for taking advantage of existing type information. We provide a type system for Xcerpt; it makes possible type inference and checking type correctness. The system is descriptive: the types associated with Xcerpt constructs are sets of data terms and approximate the semantics of the constructs. A formalism of Type Definitions is adapted to specify such sets. The formalism may be seen as a simplification and abstraction of XML schema languages. The type inference method, which is the core of this work, may be seen as abstract interpretation. A non standard way of assuring termination of fixed point computations is proposed, as standard approaches are too inefficient. The method is proved correct wrt. the formal semantics of Xcerpt. We also present a method for type checking of programs. A success of type checking implies that the program is correct wrt. its type specification. This means that the program produces results of the specified type whenever it is applied to data of the given type. On the other hand, a failure of type checking suggests that the program may be incorrect. Under certain conditions (on the program and on the type specification), the program is actually incorrect whenever the proof attempt fails. A prototype implementation of the type system has been developed and usefulness of the approach is illustrated on example programs. In addition, the thesis outlines possibility of employing semantic types (ontologies) in Xcerpt. Introducing ontology classes into Type Definitions makes possible discovering some errors related to the semantics of data queried by Xcerpt. We also extend Xcerpt with a mechanism of combining XML queries with ontology queries. The approach employs an existing Xcerpt engine and an ontology reasoner; no modifications are required.

Embracing Incompleteness in Schema Mappings

Rodriguez-Gianolli, Patricia 09 August 2013 (has links)
Various forms of information integration have become ubiquitous in current Business Intelligence (BI) technologies. In many cases, the semantic relationship between heterogeneous data sources is specified using high-level declarative rules, called schema mappings. For decades, Skolem functions have been regarded as an important tool in schema mappings as they permit a precise representation of incomplete information. The powerful mapping language of second-order tuple generating dependencies (SO tgds) permits arbitrary Skolem functions and has been proven to be the right class for modeling many integration problems, such as composition and correlation of mappings. This language is strictly more powerful than the languages used in many integration systems, including source-to-target and nested tgds which are both first-order (FO) languages (commonly known as GLAV and nested GLAV mappings). An important class of GLAV mappings are Local-As-View (LAV) tgds, which has found important application in data integration. These FO mapping languages are known to have more desirable programmatic and computational properties. In this thesis, we present a number of techniques for translating some SO tgds into equivalent, more manageable FO schema mappings. Our results rely on understanding and controlling the presence of incompleteness in mappings. We show that the composition of LAV mappings is not only FO, but can always be expressed as a LAV mapping. As a byproduct, we show that the problem of recovery checking for LAV mappings becomes tractable, in contrast to the case of GLAV mappings for which it is known to be undecidable. We introduce two approaches for transforming SO tgds into equivalent nested GLAV mappings. Our approach considers the presence of source constraints, and provides sufficient conditions for when the rich Skolem functions in SO tgds are well-behaved and have an FO semantics. We experimentally show that these conditions are able to handle a very large number of real schema mappings. Last, we propose a first-step for embracing incompleteness in the context of BI applications. Specifically, we present elements of a formal framework for vivifying data with respect to a business model. We view the task of discovering data-to-business interpretations as one of removing incompleteness from these mappings.
