Verb Aspect and World Knowledge in the Mental Representation of Text: Evidence from Eye Movements

Mozuraitis, Mindaugas 12 January 2011 (has links)
Reading involves the dynamic construction of a mental model corresponding to the situation described in a text. This representation draws on the semantic and grammatical content of the text and also involves inferences for unstated information and the sequencing of events in time. In the current study, an eye-tracking methodology was used to explore the critical role of grammatical aspect in this process. The results showed that, following an event expressed in imperfective aspect, the reading of a necessarily later event was slowed compared to when the earlier event was expressed in perfective aspect. However, the effect depended on world knowledge—when the first event was typically of short duration, it did not evoke an "ongoing" interpretation to the same degree compared to when it was of long duration. The results highlight comprehenders' use of world knowledge and subtle grammatical cues in the representation of event information during on-line reading.

The Ethics of Joseph Fletcher And His Views Of Genetic control / Etik av Joseph Fletcher, och hans syn på genetisk kontroll

Fru, Fidelis Chungong January 2004 (has links)
As we approach the 21st Century, our society is increasingly being faced with technological advances. One of such areas of advancement is the reasearch involving human genes. The human genome-mapping project(HGMP) started on the first of october 1990 with a group of over 350 labs. but by late 90's, many important advances had been discovered concerning how to improve the human specie. With these advances came ethical questions and concerns. Both moral and legal questions have been raised as to the effectiveness and safty of this technology. It is the contention of this paper to give a clearer meaning and understanding of the ethics of genetic control. As such I will discuss the wide spread fears and anxiety brought about by the introduction of this new technology. To make this aim more comprehensible, I will pay particular attention to Joseph Fletcher and his books on Genetic control, and Humanhood: Essays In Biomedical Ethics. Fletchers ardent support for genetic control has developed worldwide debates from both ethicists and philosophers as to the safty and efficiency of genetic engineering.

Situation Assessment in a Stochastic Environment using Bayesian Networks / Situationsuppfattning med Bayesianska nätverk i en stokastisk omgivning.

Ivansson, Johan January 2002 (has links)
The mental workload for fighter pilots in modern air combat is extremely high. The pilot has to make fast dynamic decisions under high uncertainty and high time pressure. This is hard to perform in close encounters, but gets even harder when operating beyond visual range when the sensors of an aircraft become the pilot's eyes and ears. Although sensors provide good estimates for position and speed of an opponent, there is a big loss in the assessment of a situation. Important tactical events or situations can occur without the pilot noticing, which can change the outcome of a mission completely. This makes the development of an automated situation assessment system very important for future fighter aircraft. This Master Thesis investigates the possibilities to design and implement an automated situation assessment system in a fighter aircraft. A Fuzzy-Bayesian hybrid technique is used in order to cope with the stochastic environment and making the development of the tactical situations library as clear and simple as possible.

Kewara, Punwalai 04 December 2012 (has links) (PDF)

Pamponet Machado, Aydano 24 June 2009 (has links) (PDF)

Visualising uncertainty in aircraft cockpits : Is icon degradation an appropriate visualisation form

Kolbeinsson, Ari January 2013 (has links)
Visualising uncertainty information has been a research area for the past decade or so, and this thesis contains the results of an experiment that examines whether prior research on icon degradation for showing uncertainty can be used in a simulated aircraft cockpit environment. Using icon degradation has been suggested as being effective to combat overconfidence bias, as well as to accurately convey information about uncertainty. Two icon sets using icon degradation were taken from prior research, and one new icon set using shape change and colour change was created for comparison. Subjects flew a flight simulator while reading icons to evaluate the uncertainty displayed, and also evaluating their own confidence in their reading. The results show that shape change leads to much higher accuracy in reading icons, and slightly higher levels of confidence. Furthermore, icon degradation results in a higher variance in reading icons and an increase in errors when no time-pressure or distraction is present. This suggests that the suitability of icon degradation for showing uncertainty is questionable in all situations, and that other design approaches such as shape change should be considered. Furthermore, problems were uncovered in the prior research that the old icons were taken from, and these problems call into question the general approach used in that research. A step at a time: An investigation of preschoolers’ simulations of narrative events during story comprehension

Polanowski Fecica, Agnieszka January 2010 (has links)
A growing body of work suggests that narrative comprehension involves the simulation of the events and actions described in a narrative (e.g., Barsalou, 2008; Matlock, 2004). Preliterate children’s ability to simulate a narrative character’s movements is explored here in three studies. Children’s simulations of a character’s movements were found to be constrained by their expectation of the duration of the described activities (i.e., walking vs. driving) and by their expectations about the motivating influence of certain psychological factors (i.e., character being eager or not eager to get to a location). Using a novel methodology these findings reveal an ability among preliterate children to create impressively rich and dynamic mental representations of narrative events and address. The implications of the present investigation speak to the larger issue of how human minds comprehend narratives and represent narrative events.

De Keukelaere, Camille 22 May 2012 (has links) (PDF)
