Baltic shore-lands facing climate change

This thesis provides new insight concerning drivers behind differences in arthropod diversity and abundance in Baltic shore ecosystems and how the arthropod communities might be affected when the conditions in the Baltic Sea are altered due to climate change.  The focus has been on climate related changes that are unique for coastal ecosystems, especially sea level rise and changes in the inflow of marine nutrients. As sea levels rise, features in coastal landscapes will be altered, islands and habitats will be flooded and diminished, and structural connectivity within the island landscape will therefore change. This thesis shows that arthropod diversity within the two arthropod groups, spiders and beetles, increases with island size but also that diversity is positively influenced by a high number of islands in the surroundings. A changed distribution and occurrence of marine species, due to climate change or eutrophication, can also affect terrestrial organisms on the shore.  In the Baltic Sea the new conditions following climate change will decrease the prevalence of bladder-wrack and benefit filamentous algae. Algal deposits on shores reflect the marine species composition and a decreased prevalence of bladder-wrack in the Baltic Sea will also be visible on the shores.  This thesis shows that a lower proportion of bladder-wrack in the algal deposits will decrease the diversity and abundance of arthropods in these deposits. Changes in the marine environment may also affect the inflow of insects with aquatic life stages and terrestrial adult stages.  On Baltic shores, prey species with aquatic life stages, especially chironomids, constitute a large proportion of the diet of the terrestrial predatory group, wolf spiders. In freshwater system, the inflow of chironomids is known to decrease with elevated water temperatures if this is true in the Baltic Sea prey availability of wolf spiders would decrease.  This thesis supports the importance of chironomids as a prey for coastal wolf spiders, but also shows that the diet varies over season with dominance of terrestrial prey in early summer shifting to a dominance of marine prey in late summer and autumn. This seasonal variation is primarily due to a gradual increase in the consumption of chironomids over season. Climate change has the potential to alter the biogeographical conditions in coastal landscapes as well as the density and quality of marine nutrient inflow. Sea level rise will diminish and flood islands and this thesis shows that a moderate sea level rise of 0.5 meters would make the total number of islands in the outer part of Stockholm archipelago decrease with about 25 %. Sea level rise could thus have consequences for arthropod diversity in Baltic shore meadows in the near future. The combined effects of sea level rise and changed prevalence of marine species in the Baltic Sea will affect the abundance and diversity of arthropods substantially. The abundance and diversity of spiders and beetles will decrease on shores that today have a high occurrence of bladder-wrack and prey availability for coastal predators might decrease due to a decreased inflow of chironomids. On the embryonic and post-embryonic development of Pseudopallene sp. (Arthropoda, Pycnogonida) with special focus on neurogenesis and nervous system differentiation

Diese Arbeit befasst sich mit der Entwicklung der Asselspinne Pseudopallene sp. (Arthropoda, Pycnogonida). Die Morphogenese und Nervensystementwicklung werden mithilfe von Rasterelektronenmikroskopie, Histologie, Immunhistochemie und Genexpressionsstudien untersucht. Während der Proboscisbildung lassen sich keine Anzeichen für ein Labrum erkennen. Aufgrund des Fehlens von Palpen- und Ovigeranlagen und der frühen Entwicklung der Laufbeinsegmente ist kein embryonales Protonymphon-Stadium identifizierbar. Die Evolution verschiedener Larvenformen der Pycnogoniden wird im Hinblick auf phylogenetische Studien diskutiert. Die frühen Prozesse im Neuroektoderm zeigen Ähnlichkeiten zu Eucheliceraten und Myriapoden. Hierzu zählen das Fehlen morphologisch distinkter Zelltypen, die Bildung von Zellinternalisierungszentren, die Immigration vorwiegend post-mitotischer Ganglionzellen mit erhöhter Delta-Genexpression und fast ausschließlich tangentiale Zellteilungen. Anschließend bilden sich pro Neuromer ein Paar Invaginationen, was durch Vergrößerung der apikalen Zellen begleitet wird. Letztere sind aufgrund ihrer hohen Mitoseaktivität, ihres asymmetrischen Teilungsmodus und des anhaltenden Zuwachses der basalen Ganglionzellen als stammzellartige neuronale Vorläuferzellen identifizierbar. Hierauf basierend wird die Validität von stammzellartigen neuronalen Vorläuferzellen als Synapomorphie der Krebse und Insekten diskutiert. Zwei evolutionäre Szenarien zur Arthropoden-Neurogenese werden erörtert. In der post-embryonalen Phase lösen sich die invaginierten Zellregionen vom Ektoderm ab. Sie bilden apikal auf den Ganglien paarige Zellcluster und bleiben mit deren Somacortex über fibrilläre ‚cell streams‘ verbunden. Der weitere Zuwachs an Ganglionzellen und die exklusive Zellproliferation in den cluster-stream-Systemen weisen letztere als post-embryonale neurogenetische Nischen aus. Ähnlichkeiten zu der neurogenetischen Nische im Deutocerebrum der decapoden Krebse werden aufgezeigt. / This study addresses aspects of the development of the sea spider Pseudopallene sp. (Arthropoda, Pycnogonida). In order to investigate morphogenesis and nervous system development, a combination of scanning electron microscopy, histology, immunohistochemistry and gene expression studies is used. Embryonic proboscis development shows no signs of a labrum. The lack of palpal and ovigeral limbs and the early anlagen of the walking leg segments lead to the rejection of an embryonized protonymphon stage during Pseudopallene development. The evolution of pycnogonid hatching stages is evaluated in light of recent phylogenetic analyses. Early neurogenesis shares similarities with euchelicerates and myriapods, including the lack of morphologically distinct neuroectodermal cell types, formation of transient cell internalization sites, immigration of mostly post-mitotic ganglion cells with elevated levels of Delta gene expression and predominantly tangentially oriented cell divisions in the neuroectoderm. Subsequently, paired invaginations form in each neuromere, being accompanied by marked enlargement of the apical cells. Due to their high mitotic activity, their asymmetric division mode and a marked cell number increase in the ganglia, the big cells are identified as stem cell-like neuronal precursors. Based on this, the validity of stem cell-like neuronal precursors as synapomorphy of crustaceans and hexapods is discussed. Two scenarios on the evolution of arthropod neurogenesis are presented. During the post-embryonic phase, the invaginating cell regions detach internally and form paired cell clusters at the apical ganglion sides. Each cluster remains connected to the ganglion soma cortex via fibrous cell streams. Increasing ganglion cell numbers and exclusive occurrence of mitoses within the cluster-stream-systems characterize the latter as post-embryonic neurogenic niches. Similarities to the neurogenic niche in the deutocerebrum of decapod crustaceans are discussed.

Hemólise intravascular, causada pelo envenenamento por aranhas Loxosceles, é dependente da ação da esfingomielinase D, toxina do veneno que se liga à membrana dos eritrócitos e ativa proteases responsáveis pela clivagem de glicoforinas, tornando as células sensíveis à ação lítica do Sistema Complemento autólogo. O objetivo do estudo foi identificar possíveis proteases envolvidas nesse processo. A toxina foi expressa, purificada e apresentou suas funções biológicas ativas. O tratamento de eritrócitos humanos com a toxina removeu glicoforinas da membrana, não teve ação sobre Kell, CD59, DAF e CR1 e induziu a deposição de C1q, C3, C4, C5b-9, fator B e properdina. O pré-tratamento das células com os inibidores galardina, bestatina e fenantrolina reduziu a hemólise dependente de complemento autólogo. A ativação de proteases das membranas sobre o substrato fluorescente Abz-FRSSR-EDDnp, induzida pela toxina, foi prevenida por PMSF, simvastatina e fenantrolina, sugerindo o envolvimento de metalo- e serinoproteases no modelo de hemólise dependente de complemento estudado. / Intravascular hemolysis caused by poisoning by spiders Loxosceles, is dependent on the sphingomyelinase D action, a toxin that binds to the erythrocytes membrane and activates proteases responsible for the glycophorins cleavage, rendering the cells sensitive to the lytic action of the autologous complement system. This study aimed to identify possible membrane proteases involved in this process. The toxin was expressed, purified and showed to be functionally active. Treatment of human erythrocytes with the toxin caused the removal of the membrane glycophorins, but did not act on Kell, CD59, DAF and CR1 and induced deposition of C1q, C3, C4, C5b-9, factor B and properdin. Pretreatment of cells with inhibitors galardin, phenanthroline and bestatin reduced the complement-dependent hemolysis. The action of membrane proteases upon the fluorescent substrate Abz-FRSSR-EDDnp, induced by the toxin, was prevented by PMSF, simvastatin, and phenanthroline, suggesting the involvement of metallo- and serine proteases in this complement-dependent hemolysis model.

O envenenamento por aranhas Loxosceles é caracterizado pelo desenvolvimento de dermonecrose. A expressão de metaloproteases induzidas pelas esfingomielinases do veneno pode estar envolvida no loxoscelismo cutâneo. Os resultados mostraram que o veneno de Loxosceles laeta e a proteína recombinante SMase I foram capazes de: induzir a expressão de metaloproteases (MMP-2, MMP-7 e MMP-9); diminuir a expressão de alguns marcadores de superfície e causar morte celular. A indução de MMP-7, como produto da ação do veneno e da SMase I de L. laeta, não foi reportada em outras espécies do gênero. O uso de inibidores de metaloproteases, como a tetraciclina, impediu a morte celular e reduziu a expressão de MMPs. A galardina, um composto que inibe metaloproteases da família das adamlisinas e das MMPs, evitou a clivagem dos marcadores MCP, 2-microglobulina, MHCI, EPCR em queratinócitos humanos tratados. Os resultados revelam que a inibição das metaloproteases de matriz extracelular e da família das adamlisinas pode ser uma alternativa eficaz no tratamento do loxoscelismo cutâneo. / The envenomation by Loxosceles spider characterized by the development of dermonecrosis. Metalloproteinases expression, induced by venom sphingomyelinases, may be involved in cutaneous loxoscelism. The results showed that Loxosceles laeta venom and the recombinant protein SMase I were able to: induce the expression of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP-2, MMP-7 e MMP-9); reduce the expression of some surface markers and cause cell death. The induction of MMP-7, as a product of venom and SMase I action, has not been reported for other genus species. The use of metalloproteinase inhibitors, such as tetracycline, prevented cell death and reduced MMPs expression. Galardin, a compound that inhibits metalloproteinases from the adamlisins family and MMPs, avoided the cleavage of MCP, 2-microglobulin, MHCI and EPCR on the surface of the treated human keratinocytes. These data indicate that inhibition of metalloproteinases can be an effective alternative on the cutaneous loxoscelism treatment.

The Spider and the Sea : Effects of marine subsidies on the role of spiders in terrestrial food webs

The purpose of this study was to identify if terrestrial arthropod predators on Baltic Sea shores vary in their use of marine versus terrestrial food items, and to construct a bottom-up food web for Baltic Sea shores. The inflow of marine nutrients in the area consists mainly of marine algal detritus and emerging aquatic insects (e.g. phantom midges, Chironomidae). Diets of coastal arthropods were examined using carbon and nitrogen stable isotope analysis, and a two source mixing model was used to examine proportions of marine carbon to diets. The results suggest that spiders are the terrestrial predators mainly utilizing nutrients and energy of marine origin on Baltic Sea shores, while insect predators such as beetles and hemipterans mainly utilize nutrients and energy derived from terrestrial sources, possibly due to differences in hunting behaviour. That spiders are the predators that benefit the most from the marine inflow suggest that eventual effects of marine subsidies for the coastal ecosystem as a whole are likely mediated by spiders.

Diversity of canopy spiders in north-temperate hardwood forests

The objective of this thesis was to understand the spatial patterns and processes responsible for canopy and understorey spider (Arachnida: Araneae) diversity at multiple spatial scales in north-temperate hardwood forests. I sampled tree trunks (sticky traps) and foliage (beating) of sugar maple and American beech tree canopies and their understorey saplings in old growth forests near Montreal, Quebec. Results show the composition of canopy and understorey assemblages differed significantly, and so did sugar maple and American beech canopy assemblages. Each stratum was also dominated by different species. The rank-abundance distribution of species from each habitat wsa also verticaly stratified because it fit different distribution models. Different factors likely structure assemblages in both habitats, particularly since the canopy is a less stable environment. Spiders from canopy and understorey foliage were tested in a laboratory for their propensity to balloon. General linear models indicated that small sized web-building spiders of the RTA and Orbicularia clades have the highest propensity to balloon. Small bodied species initiated ballooning regardless of the habitat they were collected in or their developmental stage. My results support the mixed evolutionarily stable strategy theory and indicate the absence of risk-spreading in the dispersal strategy of canopy spiders. My last chapter focused on dispersal capacity and diversity patterns of spiders at multiple spatial scales. Analyses of the species diversity of limited and high dispersal capacity species subsets through nested-multivariate ANOVA, additive diversity partitioning, and species-abundance distribution curves all point towards species-sorting processes as the main driver of local community spider diversity at the tree and stand spatial scales. Mass-effects and patch-dynamic processes drive site and regional scale diversity patterns. This thesis demonstrates that spiders provide good models to test many biological hypotheses. The research chapters of this thesis test hypotheses on the vertical stratification of forest spider diversity, the evolution of local dispersal adaptations, and the importance of dispersal capacity on species diversity patterns through a metacommunity framework.

In the last decades, there has been a growing interest in studying particular those arthropods who have an important role in agroecosystems. For example, they are natural enemies of pests and therefore they are considered to be beneficial organisms. However, these beneficial arthropods may be negatively affected by the application of chemicals under the management of agroecosystems and their potential to inhibit pests can be significantly reduced. Such organisms certainly include spiders which occure in abundant numbers practically in all types of terrestrial habitats including agricultural ecosystems where they have a role of very important predators. Therefore, the thesis focused on current issues of pesticides, especially from the view of their negative effects on behavioral modification of beneficial invertebrate organisms in agricultural crops. The theoretical part is devoted to a brief characteristics of pesticides, their sublethal effects on non-target organisms and the importance of spiders as natural regulators of pests in agroecosystems. The practical part describes the experiment whereconventionally used agrochemicals were tested the influence of the herbicide and desiccant Basta 15, the Arrest preparation and their combination (mixture Basta 15 + Arrest) on spiders genus Pardosa. I focused on the side effects of these solutions, specifically on the modification of predatory behavior and on the mortality of spiders. It has been shown that agrochemicals affect the predation successfulness of spiders. From the short term and the long term point of view, it has been shown that spiders treated with the tested preparations killed less prey than the individuals in the control group which were treated only with distilled water. The dependence of mortality and the number of killed prey on the size and sex has not been proved. Preparations Basta 15 and the mixture caused significantly higher mortality of spiders. The Arrest preparation did not increase the mortality.

Composição e estrutura da fauna araneológica (Arachnida, Araneae) associada ao estrato arbóreo-arbustivo de matas ciliares e seus microambientes no Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil / Composition and structure of the spider fauna of the tree-shrub strata of riparian forests and its microhabitats in Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil

A intenção deste estudo foi conhecer a composição e a diversidade da araneofauna relacionada a matas ciliares no Rio Grande do Sul, em diferentes localidades: rio Piratini no município de Arroio Grande; rio Camaquã em Cristal; rio dos Sinos em Parobé e rio Maquiné em Maquiné. Foi comparada a riqueza de espécies, abundância e similaridade da fauna de aranhas e a sazonalidade, avaliando se fatores ambientais bióticos e abióticos influenciam na assembleia de aranhas das matas ciliares. Também foram avaliadas as guildas de aranhas, tanto aspectos espaciais, quanto temporais, e a influência de fatores abióticos e de complexidade ambiental sobre as mesmas. As aranhas foram separadas e classificadas em quatro guildas: construtoras de teias orbiculares, construtores de teias irregulares, caçadoras cursoriais e caçadoras emboscadoras/espreitadoras. Para a amostragem da araneofauna foram efetuadas duas coletas por estação durante dois anos em cada mata ciliar. As coletas foram realizadas em transecções, por um período de 45 minutos, utilizando como método o guarda-chuva entomológico (GCE) para amostrar a araneofauna do estrato arbóreo-arbustivo. Em cada mata ciliar foram delineadas seis transecções, duas em cada microambiente: borda com o campo, interior da mata e borda com o rio. O esforço amostral foi de 288 horas de coletas. No total foram coletadas 42057 aranhas: 8851 adultas (21%) e 33206 jovens (79%). A família predominante foi Theridiidae, com mais de 50% das aranhas amostradas em cada mata, a única exceção foi a mata ciliar do rio Maquiné que dominou Linyphiidae. A abundância de aranhas adultas foi diferente entre as matas ciliares, com maior abundância no rio Maquiné (34,58% das aranhas) e menor no rio dos Sinos (18,43%). Dos microambientes, as maiores abundâncias foram no interior da mata, seguido pelas bordas, muito próximas entre si. Foram determinadas 440 espécies/morfoespécies de aranhas, entre 168 gêneros. No total 232 espécies foram nominais (53%) com 14 novos registros para o Rio Grande do Sul e três para o Brasil. No rio Maquiné foi registrada a maior riqueza de espécies (S=218) e menor no rio dos Sinos (S=179). Entre os microambientes, as maiores riquezas de espécies de aranhas foram observadas nas bordas (campo: S=298 e rio: S=279) e após o interior da mata (S=246). A riqueza de espécies foi diferente entre os rios, já as riquezas entre os microambientes não diferiram. As espécies raras foram representadas por 130 singletons (32,5% das espécies do inventário). Para a sazonalidade, as aranhas adultas foram mais abundantes no verão e menos no outono; as aranhas jovens predominaram no outono e menos na primavera. A riqueza não diferiu entre os dois anos de amostragem. Já entre as estações a diferença foi significativa, maior na primavera e menor no outono. Não foi encontrada uma relação entre os fatores abióticos (temperatura e precipitação) com a araneofauna, tanto para abundância, quanto para a riqueza. As variáveis bióticas da vegetação não foram suficientes para explicar as variações na comunidade de aranhas, não influenciando nas mesmas. A análise multivariada de similaridade (ANOSIM), pelo índice quantitativo de Morisita e qualitativo de Simpson, mostra que as composições de espécies das araneofaunas diferem entre as matas ciliares. Para os diferentes microambientes não foram encontradas diferenças na composição. Prevaleceu a guilda das construtoras de teias irregulares e uma menor quantidade das caçadoras cursoriais. A MANOVA indicou diferença significativa na proporção das guildas entre todas as matas ciliares e entre os microambientes. A partir da análise de correspondência canônica (CCA), as guildas não estão correlacionadas com as variáveis de complexidade ambiental avaliadas. As curvas de rarefação e os estimadores analíticos de riqueza de espécies indicam que a fauna de aranhas ainda não foi suficientemente amostrada para as matas ciliares, revelando a urgência de estudos futuros, principalmente, abrangendo outros métodos, para diferentes estratos das florestas. / The aim of this study was to characterise the spider fauna associated to riparian forests in Rio Grande do Sul. Four different sites were sampled: Piratini River in Arroio Grande; Camaquã River in Cristal; Sinos River in Parobé and Maquiné River in Maquiné. Diversity components such as species richness, abundance and faunal similarity were compared among rivers, among microhabitats (forest edges and forest interior) and yearly seasons, and also against biotic and abiotic environmental factors. Spider foraging guilds were also evaluated, again for spatial and temporal scales, and again against biotic and abiotic environmental factors. Spiders were separated in four guilds: orbicular web builders, sheet web builders, running hunters and ambush hunters. Two samples per season were taken during two years for all forest sites. Sampling consisted of using beating tray on the tree-shrub strata across linear transections (50 X 2 m) for 45 min. On each site six transects were used, two per microhabitat: grassland edge, forest interior and river edge. Sampling effort totalled 288 h of sampling. Overall we obtained 42,057 spiders: 8,851 adults (21%) and 33,206 juveniles (79%). The predominant family was Theridiidae, with more than 50% of all spiders for all sites except Maquiné River, in which Linyphiidae dominated. Adult spider abundance differed among sites, with more spiders in Maquiné River (34.58% of the spiders) and less in Sinos River (18.43%). Among microhabitats, largest abundances occurred in the forest interior, with the edges having less spiders. A total of 440 spider species/morphospecies were recognised within 168 genera. Only 232 of those species were nominal (53%) with 14 new records for Rio Grande do Sul state and three for Brazil. In Maquiné River we found the largest richness (S=218) and in dos Sinos River the lowest (S=179). Comparing microhabitats, the largest species richness were observed for the edges (grassland edge: S=298; river edge: S=279) with the forest interior below (S=246), but not significantly. Rare species were represented by 130 singletons (32.5% of inventoried species). Adult spiders were more abundant during Summer and less during Autumn; while young spiders occurred more during Autumn and less during Spring. Species richness also differed among seasons with more species during Spring and less during Autumn. A multivariate analysis of similarity (ANOSIM), either using Morisita quantitative index or Simpson qualitative index, shows spider species composition to differ among sites, but not among microhabitats within a site. There were no significant relationships between spider diversity components and abiotic (temperature and precipitation) factors, either for abundance or species richness. Biotic factors related to vegetation complexity (vegetation density, vegetation height, vegetation structure, canopy cover) were insufficient to explain variation in spider assemblages. Sheet web builders was the prevailing guild and running hunters were relatively rare. A MANOVA indicated significant differences in guild proportions among sites and among microhabitats. A canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) showed the guilds not to be correlated with the vegetation complexity variables evaluated. Analytical species richness estimators indicate that the spider fauna is still not sufficiently sampled, revealing the urgency of continuing studies, especially involving other sampling methods so as to evaluate other forest strata.

Diversos estudos tem indicado que o uso da abordagem funcional da biodiversidade, baseada em atributos funcionais, facilita a compreensão sobre a organização dos organismos nas comunidades, da funcionalidade dos ecossistemas, e desta forma, auxilia na identificação das suas relações com fatores ambientais. No primeiro capítulo desta tese eu apresento o arcabouço teórico da ecologia funcional aplicada ao estudo dos invertebrados terrestres, e reviso o que são atributos funcionais, como usá-los na descrição e monitoramento das comunidades e o porquê, ressaltando a ligação dos invertebrados com processos ecológicos. Nos próximos capítulos eu apresento estudos experimentais avaliando as respostas funcionais de dois grupos de invertebrados - aranhas (Araneae) e tripes (Thysanoptera) - e de processos ecológicos influenciados por invertebrados (detritivoria e decomposição de serapilheira) ao distúrbio por fogo nos Campos Sulinos. As queimadas representam uma estratégia de manejo frequente nas pastagens naturais do RS, e carecem em estudos avaliando seus efeitos no ambiente, biodiversidade e processos. A investigação foi realizada com base em um experimento de queima controlada na Estação Agronômica da UFRGS, em Eldorado do Sul, RS. O design foi em blocos casualizados, com 14 parcelas experimentais de 10 x 10 m pareadas; sendo uma parcela de cada bloco queimada no final da primavera de 2009, e a outra, considerada como controle. Informações sobre invertebrados, processos ecológicos e propriedades abióticas do hábitat foram obtidas em todas parcelas antes do fogo (para a caracterização inicial), e 1 mês, 6-7 meses e 12 meses após o fogo. Para o estudo de caso com aranhas, eu classifiquei as comunidades em famílias, atributos de estratégias de caça e medi todos os indivíduos (1755) em atributos funcionais morfológicos, sendo incorporada toda a variabilidade intra e interespecífica, e fenológica das comunidades. Por outro lado, no estudo de caso com tripes, descrevi atributos funcionais (hábitos alimentares, requerimentos de hábitat e atributos morfológicos) por espécie de tripes (48 spp.), assumindo que a variação nos atributos funcionais é sempre maior entre espécies do que dentro da mesma espécie. Nos dois estudos de caso, eu encontrei padrões indicativos de filtragem ambiental, ou seja, o fogo e/ou as mudanças no hábitat induzidas pelo fogo, parecem ter atuado como um filtro, selecionando organismos com determinado conjunto de atributos em detrimento de outros. Esses padrões foram dependentes do período após a queima considerado, por exemplo: um mês após o fogo aranhas construtoras de teias irregulares e tripes fungívoros foram prejudicados, enquanto que aranhas caçadoras da vegetação, com grandes quelíceras, tripes fitófagos e associados com gramíneas aumentaram suas proporções. Para aranhas ainda verifiquei convergência de atributos ao gradiente de biomassa induzido pelo fogo (filtragem ambiental), e divergência de atributos ao gradiente de heterogeneidade da vegetação, indicativo de limitação de similaridade (i.e. aumento da coexistência de organismos funcionalmente diferentes e diminuição de competição). Finalmente com relação aos processos ecológicos, encontrei correlações interessantes acerca de seus agentes modeladores, e.g. entre a atividade de detritivoria com a decomposição de serapilheira, e desta com a equidade da vegetação em campo não queimado. Também mostro que os processos são sensíveis, mas resilientes, ao distúrbio por fogo, seguindo a recuperação da estrutura de hábitat. Adicionalmente, eu incorporei à tese um capítulo sobre uma técnica para avaliar o processo de detritivoria, denominado bait-lamina test, o qual avalia diretamente as taxas de alimentação de invertebrados detritívoros do solo. Neste estudo pioneiro nos campos do RS, esclareço alguns aspectos metodológicos que possam constituir uma base para futuras pesquisas. Contudo, com esta tese espero estar contribuindo com o conhecimento sobre as respostas das comunidades de invertebrados e dos processos ecológicos ao distúrbio por fogo nos Campos Sulinos. Em geral, posso concluir que a abordagem funcional trouxe muitos benefícios ao monitoramento da biodiversidade, e que há elevada resiliência das assembléias de aranhas e tripes, e dos processos de detritivoria e decomposição às queimadas de pequena escala nos campos. / There is a huge need of monitoring the responses of biodiversity and ecological processes to disturbances and land use changes. Several studies have indicated that the functional approach of biodiversity, based on functional traits, facilitates the understanding of community assembly and ecosystem functionality, and thus assists on the identification of their relationships with environmental factors. In the first chapter of this Thesis I present the functional ecology theory applied to studies on terrestrial invertebrates, and I review what functional traits are, how to use them in community description and monitoring, and why, highlighting the connections between invertebrates and ecological processes. In the following chapters I present experimental studies evaluating the functional responses of two invertebrate groups- spiders (Araneae) and thrips (Thysanoptera) – and ecological processes influenced by invertebrates (detritivory and litter decay) to fire disturbance in Campos grasslands. Burning represents a common strategy for pasture management in Rio Grande do Sul State, and there is a lack of studies regarding their effects on the environment, biodiversity and processes. Our investigation was performed based in a burning experiment at Estação Agronômica of UFRGS, Eldorado do Sul, RS. The design was blocked, with 14 experimental paired plots of 10 x 10 m. One plot from each block was burned at the end of spring 2009, and the other is considered a control plot. Information concerning invertebrates, ecological processes and abiotic habitat proprieties were obtained from all plots before fire (initial characterization) and 1 month, 6-7 months and 12 months after fire. For the spider study case, I classified the organisms in families, feeding strategy traits, and measured all spider individuals (1755) thus incorporating all intra and interspecific variability of the communities. On the other hand, in the thrips study case I described functional traits (feeding habits, habitat requirements, and morphological traits) per species (48 spp.), assuming that the variation on functional traits should be higher between species than within species. In both cases, I found patterns indicating environmental filtering, which means that fire and/or the fire-induced habitat changes acted as a filter, sorting organisms with a determined group of traits instead of others. These patterns were dependent on the period after fire considered. For example, one month after fire irregular web spider builders and fungivorous thrips were more uncommon than expected, while vegetation hunter spiders, with large chelicerae, and leaf feeder thrips and thrips associated to grasses increased their proportions. For spiders we also verified a trait-convergence pattern along the plant biomass gradient induced by fire (environmental filtering), and trait-divergence pattern along the vegetation heterogeneity gradient indicating limiting similarity (i.e. increase in coexistence of functionally different organisms, and reduction of competition). Finally, regarding ecological processes, I found interesting correlations on their drivers, e.g. between detritivory and litter decay, and between these with plant evenness in unburned grasslands. Also, I show that ecological processes are sensitive but resilient to fire, following habitat structure recovery. Additionally, I incorporate to the Thesis a methodology chapter about the bait-lamina test, which evaluates the feeding rates of soil detritivore invertebrates directly. In this pioneer study, I clarify some methodological aspects of measuring invertebrate detritivory that could help future research. Nevertheless, with this Thesis I hope to contribute to the understanding of invertebrate community and ecological processes responses to fire disturbance in South Brazilian grasslands. Overall, I can conclude that a functional approach brings many benefits to biodiversity monitoring, and also that spiders and thrips communities, and detritivory and decomposition processes are very resilient to the change brought by small scale grassland burning.
