The Student and Teacher Enhancement Partnership at Georgia Tech: Factors Influencing Successful PartnershipBerman, Brecca L. 25 August 2005 (has links)
The Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech), one of the nations leading engineering schools, has limited institutional history of collaboration with surrounding K-12 schools. K-12 outreach is not a part of Georgia Techs mission, though recent years have seen greater outreach activities. Campus organizations have sponsored tutoring, academic schools have sponsored recruitment fairs and the College of Engineering has established a partnership with a high school. Two offices within Georgia Tech, the Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning (CETL) and the Center for Education Integrating Science, Math and Computers (CEISMC), have been working to expand and deepen Georgia Techs K-12 outreach through a National Science Foundation grant program combining graduate student development and K-12 outreach. Through this program, the Student and Teacher Enhancement Partnership (STEP), CETL and CEISMC seek to build meaningful and lasting relationships between Georgia Tech and local high schools.
Given the novelty of mutually rewarding relationships between Georgia Tech and local high schools, this study attempts to account for differences in outcomes of the (STEP) program over its first three years. STEPs Project Officers at Georgia Tech developed dyadic relationships with high school personnel with the same programmatic goals in mind. However, at the end of three years, some of these pairings were more mutually rewarding. A narrative analysis of these relationships is presented through case studies and tested against a literature-based logic model depicting factors likely to lead to successful, inter-organizational partnerships.

Down, but Not Out: An Ethnographic Study of Women who Struggled with and Overcame Methamphetamine AddictionNettleton, Jodi 31 December 2010 (has links)
Women suffer methamphetamine (meth) addiction at a rate much higher than rates for addiction to other drugs. Female meth users are susceptible and predisposed to gender-related risks: high rates of unprotected vaginal and anal sex, sex-work, and sexual coercion. Precursors for addiction (e.g., abuse, body dysphasia) put females in a difficult position for recovery and highlight the need for gender-specific research and treatment.
Methamphetamine (a synthetically derived stimulant) creates psychological and physical dependency that affects every neuron of the brain and damages the body immediately. Women ingest meth for initial effects that allay social pressures: feeling euphoric, connecting with others during ―parties,‖ losing weight, boosting energy, and feeling ―normal‖ despite tumultuous living conditions. Meth‘s aphrodisiac properties improve sexual relations, at least until addiction sets in, at which time relationships frequently become exploitive or abusive. Eventually, meth‘s positive effects turn negative, resulting in poor psychological and physical health. Meth addicts experience hallucinations, insomnia, and deteriorating relationships with family, friends, and colleagues. Physically, they suffer gauntness, deterioration of teeth and gums, and skin formication. They often undergo abuse to sustain their addictions.
This study analyzes quantitative data from the National Household Survey to frame the reflective ethnographic portion‘s interactive interviewing and introduces a new tool, the Life Time Line, to clarify and correlate life events. The ethnographic results, based on extensive life history interviews with five women in recovery from methaddiction, concur with national trends and detail themes that could inform prevention and treatment programs. Recurrent themes are: dysfunctional parental relationships (including being ―adulterized‖) and chaotic childhood; a full range of abuse by parents, family, and husbands or boyfriends; introduction to drugs by males; body image dysphasia; and feelings of normalcy on drugs or self-medication in the face of unbearable living conditions or mental illness. This study emphasizes recovery. The ethnographies reveal that each woman had an epiphany, at least partially facilitated by a recovering addict; participated fully in a 12-step program such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA); became dedicated to the acquisition of a college education, including graduate school; and attend AA or NA to maintain sobriety.

The escape from oneself in search for an identity : The step in and out of codependence strangling armsRosati Örsell, Julia January 2015 (has links)
This essay partly refers to trying to reach a deeper understanding of codependency as a construct but also examines how codependency can be understood and explained from a codependents own perspective. The essay also examines in what way the twelve step program can be perceived as an effective treatment method for codependency, why all the interviews were taken with people who are active participants in a twelve step program for family and friends of an addict. The study’s result represents different kind of expressions and symptoms that seems most significant for codependency and partly attach these to each other but partly also examines how and why the twelve step program can prevent these. Finally it’s also discussed how codependency and the recovery by participating in the twelve step program can be explained with the help from the attachment theory and a sociocultural theory about a relational self.

”Spiritus contra spiritum” : En religionspsykologisk studie av omvändelseprocesser hos medlemmar i Anonyma Alkoholister / ”Spiritus contra spiritum” : A religious psychological study on transformation processes among members of Alcoholics AnonymousCondró, Fransisko January 2018 (has links)
”Spiritus contra spiritum” - En religionspsykologisk studie avomvändelseprocesser hos medlemmar i Anonyma Alkoholister(”Spiritus contra spiritum” - A religious psychological study on transformation processesamong members of Alcoholics Anonymous)The purpose of this study was to understand and illustrate the conversion processes forpeople who have attained sobriety through membership in Alcoholics Anonymous. My aimwas to ascertain how the interviewees constructed their life story regarding their path tosobriety. I sought to learn how "God" as a function, a central tenet of AlcoholicsAnonymous, served the interviewees in achieving and maintaining sobriety. Dan P.McAdams’s (1993) The stories we live by: personal myths and making of the self, providedthe theoretical tools. Steinar Kvale´s (1997) The qualitative research interview provided themethod. The conclusion was that membership in Alcoholics Anonymous allowed theinformants a sense of healing, conversion and reconciliation from their earlier alcohol abuse.Through this confident community the informants were provided with the narrative meansto improve their life story and truth by a renewed identity and spiritual awakening. Keywords:

”Don’t Bullshit a Bullshitter”: En kvalitativ studie om erfarenheternas betydelse i missbruksbehandlingOlsson, Karin, Yismaw, Rut January 2013 (has links)
In Sweden the twelve-step program is commonly used in treatment of persons with addiction. A central aspect of the program is the use of staff with own experiences of substance abuse. The aim of this study is to explore and examine the extent to which staffs’ previous experience of addiction influences their understanding and ability to manage their role as an addiction counselors. The study and data analysis was conducted on the basis of empathy and role theory. A qualitative approach was applied to the seven interviews that were conducted amongst addiction counselors; all of whom had own experiences of addiction. Interviews were carried out in four different treatment centers applying the twelve-step program. The results indicate that personal experiences can be of importance for a deepened understanding of clients situation and also in the establishing of alliance. Attributable to the counselors’ own experiences of addiction is an unique ability to function as models for the clients. Their story is proof that life without drugs/alcohol is both achievable and beneficial. In regard to these findings, experiences need to correspond with an ability of distancing and self-reflectiveness. Important aspects relating to counselors own experiences of substance abuse are discussed in regard to their ability to understand and intervene with the client.

I am at Kumla, Sweden's most secure prison, and I feel freer than ever” : An interview study about the 12-step program and the monastery program within the Swedish Prison and Probation service.Parneborg, Klara, Johnson, Jeni January 2021 (has links)
The purpose of this study has been to examine if participation in the monastery-program or the 12 step program within the Swedish Prison and probation service has had an impact on former inmates in their road to a non-criminal life. The study is based on six qualitative interviews. Four life-course interviews with previous inmates and two semi-structured interviews with two caretakers active within the Swedish Prison and probation service. The result showed that participating in one of the treatment programs has had a significant meaning for the participants and it gave them tools to work with themselves. For the programs to be effective, however, all interviewed participants believed that the individuals will to change was crucial. Furthermore the results of this study showed that spirituality also has a central role in the treatment but the interpretation of it is individual.
