Uncovering The Lived Experience Of Community-Dwelling Jewish Women Over 80 Who Self-Identify As Aging Successfully: A Phenomenological StudyFredman, Rebecca 01 January 2017 (has links)
Background: Although there is significant scholarly interest in defining the concept of successful aging, there are very few small-scale, in-depth qualitative studies examining the lived experience of women over 80 who self-identify as aging successfully.
Aim: The aim of this study is to explore the lived experience of a small group of community-dwelling Jewish women over 80 in a single county in Northwestern Vermont who self-identify as aging successfully.
Approach: This study has a phenomenological approach.
Method: Phenomenological interviews were conducted with five women over 80 years of age. Interview content was analyzed, and shared themes were synthesized.
Findings: Findings revealed the following shared themes: acknowledgement of extraordinary quality of life events and/or circumstances, extensive and ongoing social involvement with communities and/or individuals, and strong sense of self.
Conclusions: The lived experiences of participants who self-identified as aging successfully were characterized by gratitude for the lives they led and continue to lead, extensive and ongoing communal and interpersonal social engagement, and high levels of self-esteem and self-knowledge.
Implications for practice: Interventions focused on promoting gratitude, ongoing social engagement, and self-esteem/efficacy may improve individuals' chances of aging successfully; women over 80 respond positively given the opportunity to tell their story, and may benefit from affiliation with a religious community.

Úspěšné stárnutí: strategie zvládání / Successful aging: coping strategiesBartáková, Martina January 2014 (has links)
Successful aging: coping strategies Abstract The goal of the present work is to explore strategies used by seniors in order to achieve the successful aging. Theoretical and methodological bases are formed by the hermeneutic-narrative approach. The empirical material consists of five narratives collected using the method of narrative interview. For narrative analysis of the interview there are two different interpretive perspectives used: Imagoes and Coping strategies. The work follows the concept of "The ninth stage of human development", whose authors are J. M. Erikson and E. H. Erikson, and focuses on the topic of how to be successful in the ninth stage. Keywords: successful aging, coping strategies, narrative analysis

An investigation of the relationship between religiosity and subjective well-being in older adults: The mediating role of optimismTrede, Teri A 01 June 2006 (has links)
The proportion of adults aged 65 and older in the United States has been increasing steadily for years. Although most would agree that this increased longevity is a remarkable achievement, there is growing concern regarding the resources that will be necessary to provide care and services for this rapidly expanding segment of the population. From a public health perspective, simply increasing longevity is no longer the ultimate outcome sought. A more pertinent goal is increasing the quality of life years, or promoting resilience and successful aging. Strategies that assist adults in delaying the onset of disability or reducing the severity of disabling conditions may serve a vital role in the promotion of resilience and successful aging in older adults. The purpose of this study was to explore the association between religiosity and subjective well-being, commonly identified as a marker of resilience in older adults. In addition, the study sought to determine if that association is mediated by optimism. For this study, subjective well-being was operationalized with measures of depressive symptomatology and life satisfaction. Secondary analyses were conducted on longitudinal data collected for the Florida Retirement Study. Results indicated that religiosity was not significantly associated with future depressive symptomatology, but was significantly associated with future life satisfaction. Dispositional optimism did not mediate the relationships between religiosity and subjective well-being variables.

The effects of spiritual care and the support of spiritual needs on quality of life in normal and pathological agingAgli, Océane 13 December 2016 (has links)
Ainsi, un accompagnement spirituel semble pouvoir permettre aux personnes âgées, sans et avec pathologies, de maintenir une qualité de vie satisfaisante / Researches of this thesis are related to the mechanisms of « successful aging » and aim to focus on the effects of spirituality on the quality of life in the normal and pathological (dementia) elderly. The concept of spirituality, often linked to religion, is characterized by meaning of life, transcendence and social interactions. Five studies were conducted and allowed us to highlight 1) the representations of spirituality (beliefs, transcendence, connection, values, needs) ; 2) a decrease of spirituality over a period of five years, and a positive correlation between spirituality and life satisfaction ; 3) a validation in French of a spirituality scale ; 4) spirituality effects on the quality of life and cognitive functioning of demented old people in a literature review ; and 5) a developed spirituality among people with dementia as much than in control participants. Thus, spiritual coaching appears to enable older people, with and without disease, to maintain a good quality of life

Previous issue date: 2014-08-25 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / This study aimed at estimating the psychosocial protective and vulnerability factors of
successful aging. It was based on the premise that aging is a continuous process of
multidimensional, multidisciplinary and heterogeneous dimensions which counts on
factors of biological, psychological, social, cultural, economic types, as well as, coping,
losses and gains facts. The research counted on a cross-sectional quantitative approach,
913 participants comprising, being divided into three studies. The first study used a
sample of 288 elderly participants, was aimed to analyze the cross-cultural adaptation
and psychometric properties of the Scale for Successful Aging (SAS), consisting of 14
items. The second study, counted on 270 elderly volunteers; it was aimed to analyze the
cross-cultural adaptation and psychometric properties of the Brief Resilience Scale
(BRS), consisting of six items. The third study consolidated the general purpose of
investigating the protective and vulnerability factors of successful aging. To this end, it
obtained a sample of 355 elderly volunteers who answered about 200 questions about
successful aging, resilience, perceived stress, life satisfaction, anxiety, depression,
health profile, as well as, socio demographic data. The first study presented a
satisfactory results with an index of internal consistency α = 0.65 and the reduction of
four items of the scale. The final version of SAS was composed of 10 items. The second
study showed an internal consistency α = 0.78 and the factor structure of the scale
maintained the number of the original items. The third study presented that BRS (β =
0.44, p <.01) and three of the other used scales [ESV (β = 0.38, p <.01); HADS-D (β = 0.38,
p

accounting for 26% of the variance of successful aging. Therefore, this latter
study showed, as protective factors, satisfaction with life, resilience, social support and
better health perception, and as a vulnerability factor, the presence of depressive
symptoms, and, for each construct, there are the determining factors and the supporting
successful aging. Validation of multidimensional scaling SAS opens up several
possibilities for future research, regarding the regional characteristics of successful
aging in Brazil.
vulnerabilidade do envelhecimento bem-sucedido.
vulnerabilidade do envelhecimento bem-sucedido. O modelo se apresentou
estatisticamente significativo [F (7,35) = 17,59, p <,01)], respondendo por 26% da
variância no envelhecimento bem-sucedido.
determinantes e coadjuvantes do envelhecimento bem-sucedido. A validação da escala
multidimensional SAS abre diversas possibilidades de investigações futuras, a respeito
das especificidades regionais do envelhecimento bem-sucedido, no Brasil.

Positive Aging: Indigenous Peoples Aging with HIV/AIDSRyan, Chaneesa January 2016 (has links)
As a result of advances in treatment over the past 30 years, the number of older people living with HIV is growing. This is of particular concern for Indigenous populations in Canada given continuing over representation in HIV diagnoses. While there has been an increase in research on aging with HIV within the general population, little is known about the experiences of older positive Indigenous peoples.
Research was conducted in partnership with the Canadian Aboriginal AIDS Network (CAAN) at CAAN's Wise Practices V conference. Participants were conference delegates, representing a sample of First Nations, Inuit and Métis people living with HIV and/or service providers from across Canada. Participants ranged in age from 32 to 63 and had been positive for 5 to 29 years. Data was collected through four sharing circles (two with women, one with men and one with service providers) and four interviews (n=34).
An open analytic approach was used to explore the content of the transcripts and codes were collaboratively developed by the research team through an inductive and iterative process. From our analysis we were able to develop an Indigenous model of successful aging (SA). This proposed Indigenous model of SA represents a holistic and subjective model that is far more achievable than traditional models of SA. Within this model five dimensions of health and wellness emerged as facilitators of SA: physical, emotional, spiritual, mental and social health. Additionally, resilience, age and culture were found to be protective factors to SA.
The goal of this project was to identify facilitators and individual strategies which enable SA within this population, in order to develop culturally mediated responses. Ideally, this knowledge can be used to help structure community and primary health services to promote SA with HIV in ways which are congruent with Indigenous culturally-defined notions of health. / Thesis / Master of Arts (MA)
