Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Filosofia e Ciências Humanas. Programa de Pós-Graduação em Antropologia Social. / Made available in DSpace on 2012-10-26T10:56:18Z (GMT). / Turning to stories told by black people who partake of the samba world of the great metropolitan area of Florianópolis (Brazil), this dissertation seeks to explore the sociocultural universe of musical practices of sambistas and chorões. This historical ethnography about samba and choro in Florianópolis, goes back to the 1940s and 1950s, a moment in which the application of the ideals of modernity that guided the new republican order and the urban reforms supported by the local elites, were well underway in Santa Catarina. Such historical events, cited in the stories told by sambistas and chorões, give shape to the background against which the black inhabitants of Florianópolis constructed a sociomusicality that extended across the XX century, through rodas de samba, musical balls at the Black Clubs, gafieiras and prostitution houses, as well as through unforgetable carnivals when the various samba schools heatedly competed for the first prizes. This ethnography cuts across histories, stories, and descriptions of the past told by sambistas and chorões from those days, moving toward histories and stories that take place in the present day, in bars that nowadays house contemporary samba performances, such as Bar do Tião, Bar Praça Onze and Bar do Jacaré - this last one the house of Grupo Samba 7, the oldest samba group still playing in the city.

The Linguistic Expressiveness in Nei Lopes' and Arlindo Cruz's songs.

Fábio André Cardoso Coelho 19 April 2013 (has links)
The present work aims at establishing a critical view of the teaching of the Portuguese language, indicating the important theoretical and practical aspects, in the teaching/learning process, and the proposals of stylistic analyses of Nei Lopes and Arlindo Cruzs songs. Some functional aspects of the language are reiterated in association with communicative situations, aiming at the formation of the linguistic citizen. Expressive resources present in ten songs of each composer are investigated, building, thus, the corpus of the research. For the theoretical analyses, the Stylistics principles proposed by Nilce SantAnna Martins, Manuel Rodrigues lapa, Marcel Cressot, among others, are revisited, describing the concept of style, the representation of affectiveness in the language, the value of the expression, the marks of subjectivity. The trajectory of the samba in Rio de Janeiro city and the roots of the musical genre are indicated. The cultural identity of the carioca people and the importance of the composers studied, concerning the linguistic-cultural representations, are highlighted. Throughout the analyses, the compositions such as Sambas that Teach are considerece productive and pleasant material to approach the mother tongue

A subversive expression of joy: what can one learn in a samba school?

Simone Aparecida Ramalho 07 May 2010 (has links)
The present work intends to examine the intersection between joy and politics. It defends that joy and feast act in favor of life, for they can produce lines of collective resistance to alienating ways of life that repress vitality. They can also fight against processes that level people and their existence. Grounded on Wilhelm Reichs Political Psychology, this work analyses the trajectory of Ala Loucos pela X, one of the groups that compose X-9 Paulistana Samba School, through the point of view of the Movimento de Luta Antimanicomial (Anti-mental Hospital Fight) in Brazil. This thesis also narrates the happenings and events that compose the history of the group of people involved with the samba group mentioned above. From 2001 to 2009, such happenings and events have radically changed the lives of those involved, both socially and existentially speaking. People who had been labeled simply as insane, therefore considered as not socially capable, have found out that living happily can subvert their daily routine much more efficiently than decades of medical biomedical treatment. Concerning the theoretical methodology used, the present work is based on Walter Benjamins concepts of allegory and narrative, as well as Maurice Halbwachs concept of collective memory. Considering important social events, this thesis finds in the samba environment, commonly taken as low culture by an intellectual tradition, that joy and resistance are ways of reinforcing life in popular culture, making Dionysian forces pulse and changing collective processes. It concludes that the paths undergone by Ala Loucos pela X show how socially powerful joy may be, inviting people to think that the tragic and heterogeneous experiences, persistent in post-modern life, can help dealing with the dilemmas faced by those involved with mental health. More than just mere entertainment, samba schools are institutions in which one learns to live with diversity. They are open places in the cities, where nets of social resistance to the status quo might be produced

The role that art has played on everyday life has enabled a renovation concerning the way of thinking cultural objects and manifestations. The artistic doing enables a new cultural doing that has fixed part of its contribution on the aesthetical dimension. The cultural contribution provided by artistic groups that seek to present different popular and traditional manifestations through scenic performances has been in evidence. This work approaches the corporeity appropriation of the samba de roda from the Recôncavo Baiano carried out by the Abambaé Companhia de Danças Brasileiras in the city of Pelotas/RS. This expression was recognized as part of the Brazilian Non-material Cultural Patrimony in 2004 and later, in 2005, it was considered a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by the UNESCO. Focusing on the corporeity and choreographic creation as cultural (re)signification, on the way actors express their feelings through dancing, and through a research based on methods of the anthropology of dancing and ethnomusicology, I sought to understand the technical-expressive elements of this centenary tradition that permeates ritual, religion and sociability, and the process by which they are transformed by the choreographic composition for the scene. From this study, it is possible to perceive the appropriation of the samba de roda and the reinscriptions through the body and the poetic movement employed by the dancers, composing the aesthetic element desired by the group. Concerning the Abambaé, specifically, it was possible to perceive that the company “creatively, invents” a new Brazil through its work. With its own comprehension and aesthetics, the Brazil from the Abambaé is diverse and joyful, and the samba de roda is directly associated with this representation of Brazil that the company seeks to present on a national and mainly international level.

Dancing Samba in Sweden : A study on transnational cultural expression

Gaizauskaite, Evelina January 2021 (has links)
In Sweden, samba - the popular Brazilian dance (and music genre), that has been named the“national rhythm” - is very widely known and practiced. This case study envelops questions about national cultures, cultural embodiment in dance, as well as cross-border relations. It aims to observe in what distinct ways, regarding these multiple facets of the topic, Brazilian culture can be expressed through samba in a foreign country so culturally different and geographically distant from the country of origin. The study focuses on samba no pé, a samba style popularized and mostly danced in Rio de Janeiro. To reach the objective, the research data has been collected through semi-structured interviews from samba teachers and dancers in Sweden. In addition, an observation has been carried out by watching a samba class in person. The collected data showed that dancing samba gives way to different interconnected processes and elements through which the Brazilian culture is transported, translated, and experienced in Sweden. As people migrate around the world in transnational spaces, links are created between the migrants’ host countries and their homelands. These connections enable different cultures to be transported, get established in different places and spread in popularity. Corporeality is also key, as culture is embodied in the movements. Samba therefore permits an experience of Brazilian corporeality and plays a central role in the expression of Brazilianness in Sweden.

Prestructuring Multilayer Perceptrons based on Information-Theoretic Modeling of a Partido-Alto-based Grammar for Afro-Brazilian Music: Enhanced Generalization and Principles of Parsimony, including an Investigation of Statistical Paradigms

Vurkaç, Mehmet 01 January 2011 (has links)
The present study shows that prestructuring based on domain knowledge leads to statistically significant generalization-performance improvement in artificial neural networks (NNs) of the multilayer perceptron (MLP) type, specifically in the case of a noisy real-world problem with numerous interacting variables. The prestructuring of MLPs based on knowledge of the structure of a problem domain has previously been shown to improve generalization performance. However, the problem domains for those demonstrations suffered from significant shortcomings: 1) They were purely logical problems, and 2) they contained small numbers of variables in comparison to most data-mining applications today. Two implications of the former were a) the underlying structure of the problem was completely known to the network designer by virtue of having been conceived for the problem at hand, and b) noise was not a significant concern in contrast with real-world conditions. As for the size of the problem, neither computational resources nor mathematical modeling techniques were advanced enough to handle complex relationships among more than a few variables until recently, so such problems were left out of the mainstream of prestructuring investigations. In the present work, domain knowledge is built into the solution through Reconstructability Analysis, a form of information-theoretic modeling, which is used to identify mathematical models that can be transformed into a graphic representation of the problem domain's underlying structure. Employing the latter as a pattern allows the researcher to prestructure the MLP, for instance, by disallowing certain connections in the network. Prestructuring reduces the set of all possible maps (SAPM) that are realizable by the NN. The reduced SAPM--according to the Lendaris-Stanley conjecture, conditional probability, and Occam's razor--enables better generalization performance than with a fully connected MLP that has learned the same I/O mapping to the same extent. In addition to showing statistically significant improvement over the generalization performance of fully connected networks, the prestructured networks in the present study also compared favorably to both the performance of qualified human agents and the generalization rates in classification through Reconstructability Analysis alone, which serves as the alternative algorithm for comparison.
