Charge Transfer and Capacitive Properties of Polyaniline/ Polyamide Thin Films

Abrahams, Dhielnawaaz January 2018 (has links)
Magister Scientiae - MSc (Chemistry) / Blending polymers together offers researchers the ability to create novel materials that have a combination of desired properties of the individual polymers for a variety of functions as well as improving specific properties. The behaviour of the resulting blended polymer or blend is determined by the interactions between the two polymers. The resultant synergy from blending an intrinsically conducting polymer like polyaniline (PANI), is that it possesses the electrical, electronic, magnetic and optical properties of a metal while retaining the poor mechanical properties, solubility and processibility commonly associated with a conventional polymer. Aromatic polyamic acid has outstanding thermal, mechanical, electrical, and solvent resistance properties that can overcome the poor mechanical properties and instability of the conventional conducting polymers, such as polyaniline.

Molecularly imprinted polymers for detection of volatile organics associated with fuel combustion

Ngwanya, Olwethu January 2018 (has links)
Magister Scientiae - MSc (Chemistry) / Pollutants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are known for their toxic effects which may lead to the cause of degenerative diseases in both humans and animals. PAHs are widespread in the environment, and may be found in water, food, automotive industry and petrochemical industries to name but a few sources. Literature reports have highlighted industrial workplace exposure to PAHs as a leading cause for development of cancer in workers. Particularly, workers in the petrochemical industry are adversely affected and the incidence of skin and lung cancer in this population group is high. The United States of America in its guidelines developed by environmental protection agency (EPA) has identified 18 PAHs as priority pollutants. Among these are anthracene, benzo[a]pyrene and pyrene which have been selected as the focal point of this study due to their significance in the petrochemical industry. Due to the carcinogenic and mutagenic properties reported in literature for certain PAHs, there have been monitoring procedures taken in most countries around the world. The commonly used analytical methods for the detection of PAHs from industrial samples are high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled to fluorescence detection, membrane filtration, ozonation and reverse osmosis. Analysis of PAHs from the petrochemical industry is typically performed by HPLC method as well as sono-degredation in the presence of oxygen and hydrogen peroxide.

Fernanda de Sá Teixeira 18 May 2007 (has links)
The main purpose of this work was to develop a thin film device with electrical anisotropic resistivity. The idea was to use a quantum effect which is present in very thin films of conductor or semiconductor materials with anisotropic morphology on the surface. The morphology was a sinusoidal-like unidirectional profile. The resistivities were determined measuring the electrical resistances of theses materials in orthogonal directions, taking in account the sample geometry and dimensions. The conductive material used was Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) with gold implanted on the surface. The average implanted depth was 2.7 nm. In the device fabrication were used micro and nanolithography, characterization by Scanning Electron Microscopy and Atomic Force Microscopy and gold implantation by MePIIID (Metal Plasma Immersion Ion Implantation and Deposition).

Elaboration et caractérisation de matériaux de type pérovskite, à faible teneur en plomb ou dépourvus de plomb / Elaboration and caracterization of materials type perovskite with low lead content or lead free

Si Ahmed, Fariza 07 March 2017 (has links)
Most of ferroelectric materials currently used in the industrial applications are lead-based ceramics. Such compounds are harmful to the environment due to the toxicity and volatility of lead oxide during the preparation process of these materials. Therefore, environmental friendly lead-free ceramics or low-lead content materials with equivalent properties has become one of the main topics as an alternative to lead-based ceramics. In this view, the present work focuses on investigating materials with formulas :Ba1-xPbx(Ti1-yZry)O3 (2.5% ≤ x ≤ 10%) and Ba1-xEr2x/3(Ti1-yZry)O3.Solid state route was used for materials elaboration. The experimental techniques used are thermogravimetric analysis, dilatometry, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy coupled to an EDX microanalysis system and impedance spectrometry. The use of these various processes allowed us to optimize the synthesis conditions and to obtain dense ceramics with density superior to 90%. In addition, the structural parameters were refined by the Rietveld method and then discussed. Furthermore, these ceramics exhibited normal and/or relaxor ferroelectric properties then some of them have very interesting dielectric characteristics in the vicinity of room temperature. Such lead-free ceramics or low-lead content materials reduce significantly the environmental pollution. Due to their good dielectric performances, they could be potential candidates for replacing lead-based materials currently used in various electronic equipments.

The Mineralogical Composition of House Dust in Ontario, Canada

Woldemichael, Michael Haile January 2012 (has links)
Despite increasing concern about the presence of heavy metals, pesticides and other toxins in indoor environments, very little is known about the physical and chemical composition of ordinary household dust. This study represents the first systematic investigation of the mineralogical composition of indoor dust in residential housing in Canada. Specimens of dust were obtained from homes in six geographically separate cities in the Province of Ontario: two located on the metamorphic and igneous rocks of the Precambrian Canadian Shield (Thunder Bay and Sudbury), the other four located on Palaeozoic limestone and shale dominated bedrock (Barrie, Burlington, Cambridge, and Hamilton). Forty samples of household vacuum dust were obtained. The coarse fraction (80 – 300 µm) of this dust was subjected to flotation (using water) to separate the organic components (e.g. insect fragments, dander), natural and synthetic materials (e.g. fibres, plastics) from the mineral residue. The mineral fraction was then analyzed using quantitative point counting, polarizing light microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy methods. Despite the great distances between the sampling localities and the distinct differences in bedrock geology, the mineral fraction of dust from all six cities is remarkably similar and dominated by quartz and feldspar, followed by lithic fragments, calcite, and amphibole. Some evidence of the influence of local geology can nevertheless be found. For example, a relatively higher proportion of sulphide minerals is observed in the two cities on the Canadian Shield where these minerals are clearly more abundant in the bedrock. Specimens from Sudbury, Canada’s largest mining centre located atop a nickel-sulphide mineral deposit, showed the highest sulphide contents. Quartz is the dominant mineral in all cities. All quartz grains have internal strain features and fluid inclusions that are indicative of a metamorphic-igneous provenance. In all cities, sand is used on the streets as an abrasive for traction during the icy winter season. This sand is obtained in all cases from local glaciofluvial deposits that were ultimately derived principally from the rocks of the Canadian Shield in the last Pleistocene glaciations that affected all of Ontario. Thus, tracking in sand is the most plausible mechanism by which quartz was introduced into these homes since sampling was done, in all cases, in the winter season. The results indicate that glacial deposits dominate the mineral composition of indoor dust in Ontario cities and that nature of the bedrock immediately underlying the sampling sites is relatively of minor importance.

Modifikace povrchu pokročilých hořčíkových slitin povlaky na bázi Ni-P / Advanced Magnesium Alloys Surface Modification by Ni-P Based Coatings

Kosár, Petr January 2017 (has links)
The dissertation thesis deals with the modification of the surface of advanced magnesium alloys with Ni-P based coatings. At the beginning of the theoretical part, the structures of the used magnesium alloys and the influence of individual alloying elements on their properties are characterized. In the following part of the thesis the current knowledge in the field of electroless deposition on metal substrates is summarized. The theoretical part of the thesis is closed with contemporary research study in the field of clarification and determination of possible mechanism of electroless deposition. For the subsequent investigation of the mechanism of electroless deposition on magnesium alloys, it was necessary to characterize the microstructure and composition of individual magnesium alloys in the first phase of the experimental part. The exact composition of elements was determined using glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy with EDS was used for composition of phases of magnesium alloys. Using scanning electron microscopy and detailed elemental analysis of the coated magnesium substrate, it was found that for optimal Ni-P coating deposition on magnesium alloys, acid pickling prior coating is required in a mixture of acetic acid and sodium nitrate. Using the XPS method, it was found that the phosphorus atom in the sodium dihydride-diphosphate reducing agent has a + V charge. 4 At the end of the experimental part scanning electron microscopy and detailed elemental analyses were used for monitoring of the Ni-P particles nucleation and growth in the first 120 seconds of the coating process.
