The participants of the study were 431 school-athletes selected in the database of PROESP/SC. The health habits (physical activity, alimentary habits and consumption of alcohol and tobacco) were collected with adapted instrument of the Global School-Based Student Health Survey GSHS questionnaire, the antropometric measures of body composition were weight, stature and skin folds (triciptal and sub scapular), and the variables of physical aptitude related to the health and to the motor acting followed the protocol proposed by PROESP/SC. To analyze the data the descriptive statistic was used, the test "t" of Student for independent samples, with significance level of p<0,05, and analysis of multivaried variance (MANOVA) with post hoc of Scheffe. The results presented that 36,8% of the sample were considered physically active. The most preoccupying sedentary behavior was the spent time watching TV, in a typical day, where 60,5% of the sample told more than two hours watching TV each day, however in a general way most of them was not exposed to sedentary behaviors. The scholars' proportion that didn't reach the minimum frequency of fruit and vegetable consumption was high, 73,1% and 85,3% respectively. A small proportion told an inadequate consumption of candies and salted except for the soda (50%). In relation to the use of cigarettes and alcohol, the proportion didn't reach 5% of the scholars. The girls presented larger averages in the percentile of fat, adds of the skin folds and fat body mass, while the boys presented a larger thin body mass. In relation to the physical aptitude related to the health (ApFRS), the boys presented larger averages in the cardio respiratory aptitude and in the abdominal resistance while the girls were better in the flexibility. Most of them were classified inside or above the criteria for health. In the physical aptitude related to the motor acting (ApDM) the boys were superior in all the variables (force of inferior members, force of superior members, agility and speed) and most of the scholars were classified with a good motor acting. Then, it s possible to note that the scholars have good health habits, an appropriate body composition for the health and great levels of ApFRS and ApDM, suggesting that the cultural factors and the practice of sports extra-class can influence positively in the behaviors related to the health and for a good physical aptitude.

The difusion of the written and literary culture occurred at the time through the Jesuits School, first institution that was responsable to educate and form the scholars in the colonial society. Those schools pass by a organization during the five hundred years, period when the jesuits was just iniciating their education activties in Portuguese Amercia. However, part of that literary culture was transmited in the time society for other ways outside that institution. The transmition was made basically through individuals like Bento Teixeira, a scholar that once was a student in the Jesuit School and acquired his graduation in this intitution. With the knowledge he acquired, Bento promoted several literary practices in a circle of judaizers, and also in the time society. In the judaizer’s circle he made biblical translations from the latin, and oral readings of the bible, with the other groups, he taught them the written tecnology and latin grammar. With this we aim to built our analisys through the life trajectory of this Bento Teixeira, based, mostly in the documentation ensemble that arises from the Holy Office of the Inquisition- denunciations, confessions and criminal cases- also in jesuit documents and reports from XVI and XVII chroniclers. Through the trajectory of Bento Teixeira we intend to analyses the cultural practices that could define, in the specific context of XVI century, some subjects as scholars or man of letters.

Preparing First-Generation College Students for Doctoral Persistence: A Formative Evaluation of the McNair Scholars Program

Martinez, Michelle Waiters 01 January 2014 (has links)
There is little diversity among earned doctorates in the United States. First-generation college students are especially at-risk for not matriculating to a doctoral degree. This applied dissertation provided an understanding of the obstacles faced by first-generation college students in doctoral programs by studying alumni of the McNair Scholars Program. The study examined the components of the McNair Scholars Program that can help ameliorate obstacles faced by first-generation college students as they enroll and persist into graduate school. This study utilized a sequential exploratory mixed methods approach to evaluate the components of the McNair Scholars Program that prepared students for successful persistence into graduate school and subsequent completion of an earned doctorate.

Academic, Research, and Social Self-Efficacy among African American Pre-McNair Scholar Participants and African American Post-McNair Scholar Participants

Williams, Eric Garnell 03 November 2004 (has links)
College enrollment and graduation rates for African Americans remain lower than enrollment and graduation rates for middle and upper-class White students. The lower enrollment and graduation rates have an effect on the number of African American students who pursue the Ph.D. and other research doctorate degrees. In order to increase the number of African Americans and other underrepresented students in the Ph.D. pipeline, the United States Congress passed legislation that created the Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program (McNair Scholars Program) in the mid-1980s. The purpose of the McNair Scholars Program is to prepare college students for doctoral studies and careers in academia through involvement in summer research internships and other scholarly activities. One way in which this program may prepare students is through the development of students' academic, research and social self-efficacy. To date, however little research has been conducted to see if the McNair Scholars Program has an effect on African American students' levels of self-efficacy. The purpose of this study was to compare levels of academic, research and social self-efficacy among African American pre- and post-McNair Scholar participants. Levels of self-efficacy were analyzed by McNair participant status (pre-McNair and post-McNair), gender, college and grade point average. The study employed a national sample of African American pre- and post McNair Scholar Program participants. Data were collected using the Graduate Education Self-Efficacy Scale (GESES), a 57-item instrument designed specifically for this study. Items for the survey were developed utilizing existing literature on academic, research and social self-efficacy. Results revealed significant differences in academic, research and social self-efficacy between African American pre- and post-McNair Scholar Program participants. There were no significant differences by gender on academic, research or social self-efficacy. Neither were significant differences found by college grade level on academic or social self-efficacy. There were, however, significant differences based on college grade level on research self-efficacy. There were also significant interaction effects between gender and college grade level on academic, research and social self-efficacy. The results suggest that participating in the McNair Scholars Program raises levels of academic, research and social self-efficacy among African American college students. / Ph. D.

The emergent religiosity of post-traditional African thought

McClymont, John Douglas 11 1900 (has links)
There exists in the modern worlda form of non-Christianised religious thought which develops the basic ideas of indigenous African religion beyond their beginnings, and is represented in authorssuch as Kamalu, Osabutey-Aguedze, etc. The spheres of interest in such authors fiJay be analysed in terms of the following areas: Intervening ideological conditions bearing on African life (particularr; theological and cosmological ideas): The historical background of African life; The roots of African life, as manifested in its traditions, and tts ethical and cultural heritage; Means for the innovative development of African life, found in African concepts of knowledge, mysticism and magic; The perceived destiny of African life. The thesis concludes with an indication of areas of agreement and debate in post-traditional African thought, of problems faced by such thought; and of other possible priorities for future study. / Religious Studies & Arabic / D.Th. Democracy in Islamic and international law : a case study of Saudi Arabia

Al-Harbi, Ibrahim Sulaiman January 2010 (has links)
Following the rise of Islamic fundamentalism, Muslim nations have been placed in the spotlight of international debate; the prevailing understanding is that democracy and Islam are fundamentally incompatible. This verdict is particularly damning in light of the trend in International Law which, since the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe, has equated democracy with human rights. Yet, a thorough analysis of the debate, taking into account the historical and theoretical bases of liberal democracy — the cultural, legal, and political development of Islam, and the extent to which the politics of Islamic countries represents the politics of Islam — reveals that democracy and Islam are, in fact, fundamentally compatible. In practice, Islamic Law can be applied alongside developments in democratic representations and human rights, whilst popular perceptions of Islam as inhibiting development in human rights are often unfounded, as can be demonstrated by examining the case of Saudi Arabia.

A poesia e a formação do erudito na China Clássica: transposição cultural do chinês ao português / Poetry and the formation of the scholar in China Classical: cultural transposition from Chinese to Portuguese

Mendoza, Inty Scoss 16 June 2014 (has links)
The present thesis discusses, as an important content of Confucian pedagogy, the classical poetry of the Empire of the Center, later denominated \"China\", in the West, in particular the first section of the Classical of Songs, in two aspects: first, the structural characteristics of the character Chinese, the ideogram, and the classic and archaic Chinese text as an aesthetic resource to be incorporated into the translation of classical poetry into Portuguese, here called \"Studies\", having as theoretical interlocutors the works of \"reimagining\" or \"transcreation\" of classical Chinese poetry by Haroldo de Campos, inspired by the seminal ideas of Fenollosa; the pictorial theory of Shitao (1642-1717) by the Song Dynasty painter and scholar, and the comments of his translator Pierre Ryckmans; the concept of text by Umberto Eco; and Dobson\'s analysis of the language of the Songs. The second aspect refers to Nature as the main theme of the poems of the Songs as representative of an important constitutive element of the education of scholars, or literate, Chinese, a caste that ruled the Chinese Empire about two thousand years, evidencing an intense abstraction of the natural world, whether in poetry or painting. This \"aesthetic education\" by which those who exercise political functions should pass is permeated by an ethical attitude in which the nature and simplicity of human relations are their chief utopia. The popular songbook, compiled between the 11th and 7th centuries BC, symbolized a natural world, distant and longed for at the same time, and which became an implicit value to the main lines of classical Chinese thinking, such as Confucianism and Taoism. Both aspects, the text and the context, base and contextualize the presented translation studies.
