Patterns of Arizona high schools' acquisition and use of microcomputer software.Beauchel, Virginia Bernstrom. January 1990 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine the patterns of acquisition and use of microcomputer software in Arizona high school library media centers, and to determine the selection procedures used by the library media specialists or other designated personnel responsible for the library media centers. The instrument used in this study was a survey developed and reviewed by a committee of school library media specialists. Subjects selected as the target population were 130 Arizona high school library media specialists. The procedures used for testing the 13 hypotheses were: (1) point biserial correlation coefficients, (2) t-tests, and (3) frequency distributions. Significant findings were indicated for the analysis of data of six hypotheses. The conclusions are summarized as follows: (1) As the size of the student body increases, the availability of microcomputer software for library management purposes also increases. (2) As the size of the library media budget increases the availability of microcomputer software for library management purposes also increases. (3) A negative relationship between the size of the library media center budget and the intention to obtain microcomputer software for school-wide purposes presented an anomaly for the intuitive approach to the analysis. (4) The methods chosen for evaluating and selecting microcomputer software varied significantly for each type of software selected. (5) Cell means indicated that for each type of library management programs obtained by the library media center, three school-wide programs were obtained. (6) Microcomputer software is utilized in the library media center more than in either classroom or in computer labs. Recommendations for additional investigation were discussed.

Librarian as teacher: Exploring elementary teachers' perceptions of the role of the school librarian and the implementation of flexible scheduling and collaborative planning.Giorgis, Cynthia Ann. January 1994 (has links)
This qualitative case study explored elementary teachers' perceptions of the role of the school librarian and the implementation of flexible scheduling and collaborative planning. Data collected consisted of field notes, audiotaping of formal interviews and planning sessions, weekly plan books, monthly calendars, questionnaires and the collection of student work. During formal data analysis, new questions began to emerge. These three questions then guided the process of data analysis. These questions were: (1) What are teachers' perceptions of the role of the school librarian as indicated through responses and actions? (2) What changes occurred in teachers' perceptions during the school year? and (3) What are teachers' issues and concerns about the implementation of flexible scheduling and collaborative planning? Four roles of the school librarian emerged from data analysis. These were: the resource role of the school librarian; the cooperative role of the school librarian; the transition from a cooperative to a collaborative role; and the collaborative role of the school librarian. In addition, seven categories were developed through the analysis of interviews and questionnaires. One category developed as several teachers expressed their concern in not having a regularly scheduled library time for students to check-out books. A few teachers also indicated the need for students to learn library skills. Within each of the seven categories, several issues also emerged. The findings of the study indicate there were numerous changes during the school year in teachers' perceptions related to the role of the school librarian. There were also ten implications which resulted from the study. One of these implications focused on professional development within schools and school districts. Professional development assists in the role of ownership and as Fullan (1991) states, ownership of something new is tantamount to real change. Through professional development, teachers and librarians can learn about the process of cooperative and collaborative planning together.

Avstånd och användning : en jämförande studie av lärares använding av skolbibliotek i undervisningen / Distance and use : a comparative study of teachers' usage of school libraries in their teachingSandberg, Tova January 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this Master thesis is to examine whether there is a connection between distance to the schoollibrary and the extent to which teachers are using it as an integral part of their teaching. The study aims to answerif the physical distance to the school library is affecting teachers' ways of working with the library, if it affects thecollaboration between teachers and librarians and finally if teachers that are using a school library outside theschool premises are doing so less as an integral part of their teaching compared to teachers that have access to aschool library within the schools premises. The study is based on qualitative interviews with six teachers in the intermediate stage of the nine-yearcompulsory school, of which three have access to a school library within the school premises and three haveaccess to a school library outside the school premises. The two groups of teachers are compared in order to findout if there is a connection between distance to the school library and the usage of it. Loertscher's school librarymedia program and teacher taxonomy have been used as a theoretical framework. The study shows that the teachers who use a school library within the school premises have a bettercollaboration with the librarians than the ones who use a school library outside the school premises. The studyalso show that theese libraries are an integral part of the teaching to a higher degree. However, it is not shownbeyond doubt that the physical distance to the library is the determining factor for the teacher's results. Otherfactors, such as the fact that the school libraries outside the school premises at the same time are functioning aspublic libraries, may also have influenced the result. This is a two years master's thesis in Archive, Library and Museum studies.

Smoothing the information seeking path: Removing representational obstacles in the middle-school digital library.Abbas, June M. 05 1900 (has links)
Middle school student's interaction within a digital library is explored. Issues of interface features used, obstacles encountered, search strategies and search techniques used, and representation obstacles are examined. A mechanism for evaluating user's descriptors is tested and effects of augmenting the system's resource descriptions with these descriptors on retrieval is explored. Transaction log data analysis (TLA) was used, with external corroborating achievement data provided by teachers. Analysis was conducted using quantitative and qualitative methods. Coding schemes for the failure analysis, search strategies and techniques analysis, as well as extent of match analysis between terms in student's questions and their search terms, and extent of match analysis between search terms and controlled vocabulary were developed. There are five chapters with twelve supporting appendixes. Chapter One presents an introduction to the problem and reviews the pilot study. Chapter Two presents the literature review and theoretical basis for the study. Chapter Three describes the research questions, hypotheses and methods. Chapter Four presents findings. Chapter Five presents a summary of the findings and their support of the hypotheses. Unanticipated findings, limitations, speculations, and areas of further research are indicated. Findings indicate that middle school users interact with the system in various sequences of patterns. User groups' interactions and scaffold use are influenced by the teacher's objectives for using the ADL. Users preferred to use single word searches over Boolean, phrase or natural language searches. Users tended to use a strategy of repeating the same exact search, instead of using the advanced scaffolds. A high percent of users attempted at least one search that included spelling or typographical errors, punctuation, or sequentially repeated searches. Search terms matched the DQ's in some instantiation 54% of all searches. Terms used by the system to represent the resources do not adequately represent the user groups' information needs, however, using student generated keywords to augment resource descriptions can have a positive effect on retrieval.

A study to determine the relationship between interest as measured by a Student interest inventory and recreational nonfiction books checked out of the library media center by intermediate grade students at Sunnyside Elementary School, North Clackamas School District Number 12, Clackamas, OregonLeedy, Larry Charles 01 January 1982 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to determine if a correlation existed between the selection of recreational nonfiction books from a school library media center by elementary school students in grades four through six and the measured interest, as generated by the Student Interest Inventory, of the students. Data for this study was collected during the period September, 1982 and April, 1983 at Sunnyside Elementary School, North Clackamas School District Number 12, Clackamas, Oregon. The raw data for the measured interest and recreational nonfiction books checked out were arranged by Dewey Decimal Classification tens. By using the Pearson product-moment correlation formula a significant coefficient was found and it was concluded that a correlation did exist between measured interest and nonfiction recreational books actually checked out of the library media center.

Student Performance of a Library-Related TaskHaskell, Loretta Murray 05 1900 (has links)
The high school research paper is a task which consumes instructional time, requires considerable student effort, and places a high demand on school library resources. Little research has been conducted on how students accomplish this task. Academic task research indicates that in classrooms, tasks are defined by students in terms of (a) the nature of the products the teacher will accept and (b) the operations allowed and the resources available. Here the product is the research paper; the resources available include those found in the school library. The purpose of this study was to determine what strategies students use to perform the library-related task.

A instituição de bibliotecas nos grupos escolares do estado de São Paulo (1890-1920) / The creation of libraries in São Paulo\'s public schools (1890- 1920).Souza, Luciene Soares de 18 December 2009 (has links)
The purpose of this dissertation is to research the creation of the libraries in São Paulos public schools from 1890 to 1920, considering that the reading space and book conservation was foreseen in floor plans, governmental enactments and debates for the public instruction reformation in Republics first years. Considering that these projects and regulations didnt permit to estimate if, in practice, libraries would exist and what reasons, purposes and practices permeated this spaces creation and use in Primary School, we tried to understand the constitution of a specific support space for teachers and students education in Public Schools, the school library, to understand these practices in the educational context of Republic first decades. The analysis of printed and handwriting sources laws, enactments, reports, official letters, yearbooks, projects and regulations, besides educational magazines such as A Eschola Publica (1893-1897) and Revista de Ensino (1902-1918) founded in Arquivo do Estado de São Paulo is the start point of this research. We have as reference the historiography approach identified as Cultural History, specially the works of Antonio Viñao Frago and Dominique Julia about school culture and Roger Chartier and Robert Darnton about the History of Reading.

Biblioteca na educação: práticas colaborativas e apropriação cultural / Libraries in the Education: colaborative practices and construction of meaning for the use of informational/cultural centersCaires, Fernanda Medeiros 14 November 2014 (has links)
This work presents a study in the matter of the library instruction and construction of meaning for the use of the informational/cultural center, having as its essential part the development of an introduction program of the Estação do Conhecimento do Programa Einstein na Comunidade Paraisópolis\'s library. This is a unique place for the process of developing new informational knowledge. For that, this research supports that these kinds of programs need peculiar objects, which were developed in collaboration with the whole group of people involved. These peculiar objects were used in a dialogue with the complexity of the languages and uses of the library. The study showed that the introduction and incorporation of the individuals in the library and in the information environments is a complex process that goes beyond the mechanic dimension of the data and information transmission or how the devices are organized
