Selected school-related reasons why teachers abandon the teaching profession: an educational management perspective

The following research question motivated the study: "How can education management effectively address factors influencing teachers to migrate from the teaching profession?" To answer this research question, one school was selected in Limpopo Province, which is not affected by the migration of teachers from the teaching profession; this was demonstrated by the school retaining expert and veteran teachers and its excellent grade 12 results. Factors influencing the migration of teachers from the teaching profession were researched by means of qualitative approach. Focus group interviews, phenomenological interviews and unstructured (in-depth) interviews were conducted, transcribed and analysed. The research findings indicated that education management team needs to urge the government to pay teachers attractive salaries, introduce performance bonus scheme, deal with overcrowding and lack of resources, curb violence in schools, deal effectively with corruption, improve poor learners' discipline and do away with corporal punishment. / Teacher Education / M. The management of teacher-occupational stress at primary schools in Sedibeng District 8, Gauteng Province

This study aimed at establishing the role played by school management teams in managing teacher-occupational-stress in Sedibeng West District primary schools in the Gauteng province. The investigation was conducted using a quantitative research approach. The changes in South African schools’ curriculum which did not have a life span of ten years post-apartheid; the rate of absenteeism pointed out by the Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshega. She believed that these may be caused by serious illness; therefore it impressed the idea of investigating the role played by school management teams in managing teacher-occupational stress. The study looks at the following two research questions:  What are the causes of teacher-occupational-stress?  What role can the school management teams play in managing teacher-occupational-stress? A questionnaire was used as an instrument of data collection from primary schools in Sedibeng West district 8 in the Gauteng province. The researcher’s sample size was 32 (n=32). Findings were that the school management teams are playing their roles and supporting teachers. However, teachers find their teaching job to be stressful. The study found significant factors causing teacher-occupational-stress. One of the factors is failure by the school management team to acknowledge teachers hard work. Recommendations are outlined at the end of this study indicating how the Department of Basic Education can intervene and what the school management teams can do to manage teacher occupational stress. / Educational Management and Leadership

Vision of excellence in secondary schools leadership in Ekurhuleni East District

This research investigates the vision of excellence in secondary schools leadership in Ekurhuleni East District (Gauteng East District) and the existence of a vision of excellence in schools. A literature study investigated models of leadership related to vision of excellence and aspects of vision of excellence in school leadership. An empirical investigation used both a quantitative and qualitative research design to collect data from a purposefully selected and stratified sample of participants and secondary schools in the Ekurhuleni East District (Gauteng East Education District). A questionnaire and focus group interviews were used to gather data from the respondents. Data were analysed and interpreted using quantitative and qualitative approach. The findings of both the literature study and the empirical research on the above-mentioned vision of excellence in secondary schools leadership in Ekurhuleni East District revealed that there is a lack of support from school leadership and the School Management Team (SMT) in realising a vision of excellence in secondary schools leadership. The main challenges that were identified by qualitative method were the lack of support by both the district office and school management or school leadership. The realisation of the vision of excellence is dependent on how the information is managed and disseminated by the school leadership, principals and SMTs. It appears that the realisation of the vision of excellence would enhance the level of understanding of new developments in the education system including the curriculum change and technological advancement. / Educational Leadership and Management / M. Management of inset for secondary school educators in rural areas

The aim of this study was to investigate the management of in-service education and training (INSET) conducted for teachers, in particular in rural secondary schools in the Zoutpansberg West Circuit, Limpopo Province. The problem was conducted by a literature study and empirical investigation. The literature review explored various definitions of INSET and related concepts and dealt with the provision of in-service training for teachers in developing countries such as Kenya and South Africa and a developed country such as Britain. The empirical study investigated the management of INSET for secondary school educators in rural areas using a questionnaire administered to educators in eleven secondary schools in the Zoutpansberg West Circuit. Findings indicated strengths and weaknesses of INSET. Based on the literature and the empirical investigation, recommendations are made for the Department of Education with regard to the provision of INSET. / Educational Studies / M. The induction of novice teachers in community junior secondary schools in Gaborone, Botswana

This study focuses on the induction of novice teachers in Community Junior Secondary Schools (CJSS) in Gaborone, Botswana. The point of departure is that induction is an important factor that is essential to the success of every beginner teacher. It is the responsibility of the school management to provide comprehensive induction programmes that will support beginner teachers and retain them in the teaching profession. This problem was investigated by means of a literature study and an empirical investigation using a qualitative approach. A small sample of beginner teachers in six selected schools in Gaborone formed the sample for this study. Findings indicated that the extent to which novice teachers are given professional guidance and support in schools is not enough. It is recommended that induction programmes receive more priority in schools since the first year of teaching is the most important determiner in the teaching career of an individual. / Education management / M.Ed. Challenges in the implementation of whole school evaluation at secondary schools in the Libode District, Eastern Cape Province

The purpose of this study was to investigate the implementation of Whole School Evaluation (WSE) policy in the Libode District, Eastern Cape Province (ECP). The ECP consists of 23 districts with different learner performance levels. Libode is one of the districts in ECP with poor learner performance. The qualitative case study was used to examine the role of the stakeholders in implementing WSE policy. The empirical research was done through the semi-structured interviews with district and provincial education officials, open-ended interviews with School Management Teams (SMTs) and documents from sampled schools were analysed. The findings suggested that there was a concern in the implementation of WSE in secondary schools; they are not implementing the School Self-Evaluation (SSE). This suggested that there was a need for training schools on how to conduct SSE. The stakeholders were not conversant about the policy and inevitably not performing their roles as stipulated in the policy. This suggested clarity and redefining of roles of the stakeholders and capacity building. There were systemic barriers in the implementation of WSE policy. That implied provision of human and financial resources and accountability of the role players in monitoring and evaluating the implementation of the policy. In conclusion, the findings and recommendations in this study will provide valuable contribution to the implementation of WSE in Libode secondary schools. / Educational Leadership and Management / D. The role of school management teams towards provisioning of school sanitation at Man'Ombe Circuit, Mopani Education District in Limpopo Province, South Africa

Thesis (M.Dev. (Planning and Management)) -- University of Limpopo, 2022 / The purpose of this study was to explore the role of SMTs in providing and sustaining schools’ sanitation infrastructure. Qualitative research approach was conducted to determine if the SMT members fully understand the role that they can play in sustaining sanitation facilities in their schools. Primary data was collected using semi structured questionnaires using qualitative research method. Twenty SMT members from five sampled schools from Man’ombe Circuit in Mopani East Education District were used as respondents. The study highlighted that provision of sanitation infrastructure which is not accompanied by effective management of those infrastructure cannot be sustained. Management was selected as a theoretical framework to clearly state the duties of SMT members as managers in the school community they are based in. Areas of potential effective role performance and areas of potential role conflict in school sanitation infrastructure were highlighted. The findings revealed that SMTs do not fully understand their role when it comes to school sanitation.
