Learning environments of technology supported secondary science classrooms: a study in an Indian school

Gupta, Adit January 2007 (has links)
Science teaching at the secondary level can be made more effective with the judicious utilization of a multi-media approach involving modem information and communication technologies that is entering the Indian educational system in general and the schools in Jammu region (J&K State), in particular, surely but slowly. A major impact of technology today in the field of education is that at all levels classrooms are becoming technology-rich learning environments and as such there is a need to conduct research to study the learning environments of technology-supported classrooms. The study described in this thesis utilized the Technology-Rich, Outcomes-Focused Learning Environment Inventory (TROFLEI), to study the perceptions of students' actual and preferred classroom learning environment in a technology-supported science classroom at the secondary level in an Indian school situation. An important aspect of this research was to determine the reliability and validity of this scale for use in Indian classroom settings. An attitude scale derived from the Test for Science Related Attitudes (TOSRA) for studying the attitude of students towards science was also employed and lastly the Questionnaire on Teacher Interaction (QTI) was used to analyze the teacher student interactions in a technology-supported science classroom environment. Data for research were collected from 700 secondary students in a co-educational Indian school in the city of Jammu. / The study reported that the TROFLEI and the QTI were reliable and valid instruments for assessing the psychosocial learning environments III a technology-supported classroom and the teacher-student interactions III such environments. Significant associations are also reported between the students' perceptions of their technology-supported learning environment and their perceptions of the teacher-student interactions with three learner outcomes; attitude towards science, academic efficacy and academic achievement. Significant gender differences in technology-supported learning environments have also been reported in this study. This research study happens to be the first of its kind in this region and should provide a thrust towards the use of technology-supported classrooms for effectively teaching other school subjects.

Integrating road traffic safety education in the teaching and learning of science and technology / by Kenneth T. Lesedi

Lesedi, Kenneth Terhemen January 2005 (has links)
The title of the study is integrating road traffic safety education in the teaching and learning of science and technology. The overall goal of this study was to develop a tool for the integration of Traffic Safety Education (TSE) in the teaching and learning of Science and Technology in School. As such, four research questions (stated in 1.2.1 to 1.2.5) were raised on critical aspects of the problem so as to direct the course of the study to provide solutions to the problem. These research questions were formulated into the aims of the study as stated in section 1.3. To attain these aims, a literature study and interviews were conducted. Through interviews and a literature study, it was found (among other things) that: • TSE has great potential for the reduction of road accidents/ collisions, and its teaching in school will prepare our learners to be safe road users. • Science and Technology has tremendous impact on traffic safety, and the three have much in common, which does provide room for them to be integrated in school curricula. • School educators are not adequately equipped to integrate TSE in the different learning areas. Consequently, an integration model called "Multilateral learning area integration model" has been developed for the integration of TSE in the learning areas of natural science and technology (see 7.2 and 7.3for details). Eleven recommendations were made in section 8.4 on the basis of the conclusions (in section 8.3) drawn from the proceedings of interviews and the literature study. These recommendations if implemented accurately, would undoubtedly contribute to solving the problem investigated in the study. This study has therefore made a valuable contribution to laying a solid foundation for Combating the problem of high road accidents/collisions on South African roads. / Thesis (Ph.D. (Education))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2005.

Primary And Secondary Teachers Shaping The Science Curriculum: The Influence Of Teacher Knowledge

Keys, Philip Mark January 2003 (has links)
This thesis reports on how primary and secondary teachers' knowledge influenced the implementation of a Year 1-10 science syllabus which was introduced into Queensland in 1999. The study investigated how the teachers' knowledge of the primary and secondary teachers differed and how teachers' knowledge impacted on the implementation of the science curriculum. Teacher knowledge otherwise referred to as teacher beliefs and practices has been acknowledged as an influence in the implementation of curriculum. Yet, a considerable portion of curriculum evaluation has focused on measuring the successful implementation of the intended curriculum and not the enactment. As a result, few studies have investigated how the curriculum has been influenced by teacher knowledge or have compared primary and secondary teacher knowledge. Furthermore, in order to provide a seamless grade one to ten science syllabus it is necessary to compare primary and secondary teacher beliefs and practices to determine whether or not the beliefs and practices held by these two groups of teachers is similar or dissimilar and how these beliefs and practices in turn, impact on the implementation of a curriculum. The research adopted Eisner's (1991) methodology of educational criticism and used a comparative case study approach to investigate the teacher knowledge of four primary and three secondary teachers. Data were presented as a dialogue between three composite characters, a lower primary, a middle/upper primary and a secondary teacher. The results revealed that teachers utilised three sets of beliefs to shape the implementation of the science curriculum. These were categorised as expressed, entrenched and manifested beliefs. The primary and secondary teachers did possess similar sets of beliefs and knowledge bases but their strategies for implementation in some instances were different. Furthermore, these sets of beliefs and knowledge bases served as motivator or an inhibitor to teach science in the manner that they did. A theoretical model was developed to explain how these sets of beliefs influenced the curriculum. This study provides professional developers with a framework to observe teacher beliefs in action and thereby to assist in the facilitation of curriculum change.

[en] THE SCIENCE TEACHING IN THE YEARS OF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AND THE POLICIES AIMED AT MUNICIPAL SECRETARY OF EDUCATION OF THE CITY OF RIO DE JANEIRO – 2009 A 2016 / [pt] O ENSINO DE CIÊNCIAS NOS ANOS INICIAIS E AS POLÍTICAS DIRECIONADAS À REDE MUNICIPAL DE EDUCAÇÃO DO RIO DE JANEIRO - 2009 A 2016

MARIA DE LOURDES TEIXEIRA BARROS 22 September 2017 (has links)
[en] This research deals with the teaching of science in the first years of elementary school, taking to research aspects relevant to the teaching of the discipline from the implementation, in 2009, of new policies aimed at Municipal Secretary of Education of the city of Rio de Janeiro. These policies refer to the inclusion of the discipline of Science in large-scale evaluations, to the formulation and distribution of teaching materials at schools and to the implementation of programs in partnership with Civil Society Organizations of Public Interest (OSCIP), which lasted until 2013, the Programa Cientistas do Amanhã and the Programa Ciência Hoje de Apoio à Educação. This is a qualitative research, which uses semi-structured interviews as methodological procedures, in addition to consulting public documents and visits to schools. At the public policies axis, the main analytical framework is Ball and Bowe s policy cycle approach (1992), which understands the processes from their macro and micro perspectives. In the axis of the teaching of Sciences, the analysis is made from the point of view of the concept of Scientific Literacy, defended by authors like Chassot (2000 and 2003), Lorenzetti and Delizoicov (2001), Krasilchik and Marandino (2004), Carvalho and Sasseron (2011). From the perspective of the educational actors, it is sought to know the current practice in teaching science and the process of policy development in the different contexts of analysis, perceiving its influence on teaching. The study demonstrated that the performatic policies influenced the teaching of Sciences, establishing differences between the school years, and that, although they have given compulsory discipline to the 4 th and 5 th years, they did not promote Scientific Literacy, turning primarily to the production of performance indexes and the stimulation of practices consistent with a traditional conception of education. The partnership programs were considered adequate by teachers in relation to teaching materials and teaching strategies, such as the use of research activities and scientific texts. The caveat is that they were implemented without considering the reality of the schools and in dissonance with the other proposals, hindering its full realization. Accomplished as partnership projects of the Municipal Secretary of Education and not of the schools, the programs did not leave significant legacy after its end. It is concluded that a reassessment of the current educational policies is necessary so that the teaching of Sciences contributes effectively to the Scientific Literacy and that these can only be successful if developed in accordance with the reality of schools and if the rulers seek means to include the participation of teachers in the whole process.

Darroz, Luiz Marcelo January 2010 (has links)
The aim of this paper was to investigate the process of drawing up and developing a didactic proposal about basic concepts of astronomy founded theoretically on Meaningful Learning. The didactic proposal has been applied , in the way of an public outreach course, to a group of students that were finishing the course of teachers’ education in the Normal mode at a public school at the town of Passo Fundo, RS. The work has been focused on the teaching of basic concepts of astronomy, and we chose this theme because we consider this fact as highly motivating, and it enables the connection to several physical concepts , besides being a part of the roll of contents that must be approached at the Basic Education. The theoretical part of this paper was fundamentally the theory of Meaningful Learning which was developed by David Ausubel. We sought to develop the teaching methodology with the approach of basic concepts of astronomy following from subsumers which are present in the students’ cognitive structure. The drawn up activities were pedagogical moments which aimed at rendering the theme meaningful and relevant to the students so that they would feel secure in approaching it in their future professional activities. The signs of meaningful learning have been obtained by means of several instruments of research and evaluation among which we point out the conceptual maps and the representation of the studied concepts in which the students have to transpose the subjects that were approached in new contexts. In these instruments, the students presented a reasonable profit index. The results of this implementation also showed that the subject is recognized by the students as potentially meaningful and that the previous knowledge which is present in their cognitive structures is presented in a conceptually wrong or incomplete way. The evaluation questionnaire of the didactic proposal, which was applied at the end of the experience, seems to show the students’ approval regarding the used methodology, showing that the presented material and the developed and utilized methodology were fundamental for the students’ good performance in the project and for the promoted meaningful learning.

O desencantamento do mundo: uma reflexão necessária para o ensino de ciências e matemática / Disenchantment and enchantment of the world: a necessary reflection for science education

Araújo, Elian Sandra Alves de 27 September 2013 (has links)
In this work we intend to reflect on some possible meanings for the expression 'disenchantment of the world'. When these positions assume extremes, they are not recommendable, because the act of demonizing or divinize the advent of science and technology restricts the real complexity involved in both: as regards the scientific achievements as with regard to its impact on modern life. We argue that a constructive and open dialogue involving a gradation of positions constitutes something more advisable to guide a critical science education for the citizen. We proceed to a confrontation between a worldview guided by free imagination that knows no limitations of the laws of the natural world with a vision of the world that is governed by these laws. In order to do that, we implement a confrontation between the texts of Galileo (1935), with the narratives of Jonathan Swift (1978) and Monteiro Lobato (1968). We emphasize that a scientific education that engenders a genuine formation for the citizen must be based on the complementarity between the two worldviews, since this should be considered as essential to the realization of the Teaching of Science and Mathematics in their current perspective.
