Investigation Of The Preservice Science TeachersKahyaoglu, Elvan 01 July 2004 (has links) (PDF)
The aim of this study is to investigate the views of preservice
science teachers on science-technology-society, STS, issue. A total of 176 preservice science teachers participated in the study. A 26-item &ldquo / Views on Science-Technology-Society (VOSTS)&rdquo / instrument, translated and adapted into Turkish, were utilized to assess participants&rsquo / views on STS. The VOSTS (Aikenhead, Ryan and Fleming, 1989) is a pool of 114 empirically developed multiple-choice items with nine categories. In order to understand participants&rsquo / views on STS in depth, semi-structured interviews were also conducted by 9 volunteer preservice science teachers.
The results gave a colorful picture of the views of preservice
science teachers on science-technology-society issue. The analysis revealed that preservice science teachers often confuse the definitions of technology with science. Most of the participants of the study had specific views about the reasons of doing scientific researches in their country, for example, to be independent from other countries, to get
financial profit. Results displayed a consensus on the possible positive effects of upbringing and the importance of education given to high school students. According to the data obtained from the present study, respondents possess varied views about the influences of society on science and technology. While preservice science teachers claiming that scientists could break the rules of science, they also claimed scientists as objective in their study. On the other hand, participants supported the view that scientists&rsquo / concern on all the effects of their experiments. Preservice science teachers advocated also that technological developments can be controlled by citizens.

Considerations of Multicultural Science and Curriculum Reform: A Content Analysis of State-Adopted Biology Textbooks in FloridaDelgato, Margaret H 03 December 2008 (has links)
The purpose of this investigation was to determine the extent to which multicultural science education, including indigenous knowledge representations, had been infused within the content of high school biology textbooks. The study evaluated the textbook as an instructional tool and framework for multicultural science education instruction by comparing the mainstream content to indigenous knowledge perspectives portrayed in the student and teacher editions of 34 textbooks adopted in Florida within the last four adoption cycles occurring from 1990 to 2006. The investigation involved a content analysis framed from a mixed methods approach. Emphasis was placed, in consideration of the research questions and practicality of interpreting text with the potential for multiple meanings, within qualitative methods. The investigation incorporated five strategies to assess the extent of multicultural content: 1) calculation of frequency of indigenous representations through the use of a tally; 2) assessment of content in the teacher editions by coding the degree of incorporation of multicultural content; 3) development of an archaeology of statements to determine the ways in which indigenous representations were incorporated into the content; 4) use of the Evaluation Coefficient Analysis (ECO) to determine extent of multicultural terminologies within content; and 5) analysis of visuals and illustrations to gauge percentages of depictions of minority groups. Results indicated no solid trend in an increase of inclusion of multicultural content over the last four adoption cycles. Efforts at most reduced the inclusion of indigenous representations and other multicultural content to the level of the teacher edition distributed among the teacher-interleafed pages or as annotations in the margins. Degree of support of multicultural content to the specific goals and objectives remained limited across all four of the adoption cycles represented in the study. Emphasis on standardized testing appeared in the six textbooks representing the most recent adoption cycle. Recommendations included increased efforts to identify quality of content by including input from scholars in the field of multicultural education as well as indigenous peoples in the creation of textbook content. Recommendations also included further clarification of the definition of science within multicultural science education frameworks, indigenous knowledge as compared to Western science and pseudoscience, and scientific literacy as a central focus to a multicultural science education meant to address the needs of an increasingly diverse student population and prime-age workforce.

Interpretation and enactment by teachers of the interrelatedness of Technology-Society-Environment and other themes of the Technology curriculumNdlovu, Elliot Charles January 2013 (has links)
This descriptive case study focuses on how Technology teachers interpret and enact the
interrelationship of the Technology-Society-Environment (TSE) theme with the
Technological Process and Skills (TPS) and Technological Knowledge and Understanding
(TKU) curriculum themes of the South African school subject, Technology. Science and
technology have influenced society in the twentieth and twenty-first Century to a
considerable extent. A critical study of this group of related influences is termed Science-
Technology-Society and addresses socially relevant topics that encourage critical and high
level thinking skills, problem-solving and decision making capacity. These issues are
included in the Technology curriculum as the TSE theme. Using the TSE theme in teaching
would have the potential to make the curriculum more relevant and learning more meaningful
as it provides scope for teachers to engage learners to construct knowledge at a critical level
in different real life contexts.
This study investigated the relationship between teachers’ understanding of the
interrelationship of TSE with Technological Process and Skills (TPS) and Technological
Knowledge and Understanding (TKU) themes and the extent to which the unique features
and scope for teaching Technology are met. The study was set in Bohlabela district of the
province of Mpumalanga, in South Africa and implemented between August 2011 and April
2012. Four teachers of different schools and circuits were interviewed, three were observed
during teaching, their lessons, work schedules and learners’ workbooks and project portfolios
were analysed. A novel combination of an adaptation of the Ben-Peretz scheme of curriculum
document analysis and Rogan and Grayson construct of implementation frame was used in
the analysis of the information obtained through documents and observations. The study established that only in exceptional cases teachers use learner centred approaches
that allow the integration of the TSE theme with the process (TPS) and knowledge (TKU)
themes. Evidence was found that while teachers planned such integration, learners
themselves do not show any examples of such integration in their workbooks. Teachers have
difficulties with specific knowledge areas of the Technology curriculum, in spite of formal
adequate basic training in the subject. Teachers ascribe these difficulties to resource
limitations, the absence of specific technology training and inadequate support by teacher
support personnel.
It is recommended that teacher support groups be established, and that the Department of
Education develop specific curriculum materials and train teachers in the interpretation and
enactment of the documents. / Dissertation (MEd)--University of Pretoria, 2012. / gm2014 / Science, Mathematics and Technology Education / unrestricted

Previous issue date: 2012-08-29 / Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais / Nowadays, Science and Technology developments and influences on humanistic, social, cultural and economic dimensions have raised discussions about the nature, potential and limits of those areas. Science teaching according to STS (Science-Technology-Society) education comes out as an approach that aims to integrate scientific, technological and social themes in a given content. This approach stimulates students to develop skills that enhance their ability to play their role in society in an active and mindful manner, and hence contributes to the rise of a larger number of scientifically and technologically literate citizens. In that regard, the main objective of the present study is to analyze academic studies master s and doctoral theses produced between 1992 and 2009 that have focused on the STS education field, seeking to identify STS education perspectives pointed out in those studies during that time span. The secondary objectives of this study are: (i) to identify master s and doctoral theses in Education, Science and Mathematics Teaching or related graduate programs of Brazilian and Portuguese federal or state universities, all of the works dating from 1992 to 2009 and investigating approaches related to STS education; and (ii) to characterize the thematic focuses, methodological and STS approaches in those theses. Therefore, this is a state of knowledge research conducted according to a theoretical, bibliographical, and quantitative-qualitative approach, for which the Qualitative Content Analysis method was used. Among the most relevant results, it has been found that 14% of the investigated Brazilian theses were directed towards the college level, whereas none of the Portuguese theses had the same intent. On the other hand, 79% of the Portuguese theses were aimed to the first years of school, whereas only 21% of the Brazilian theses were devoted to that education level. Analyses were also carried out in order to identify and discuss which STS approaches and/or perspectives are present in doctoral theses finished at both Brazilian and Portuguese universities. Such analyses have indicated that the main STS education model observed in the theses is Logical reasoning (40% of the theses, i.e., 10 out of 24 theses), followed by Sociocultural (39% of the theses, i.e., 9 out of 24 theses), Historical (3 theses), Socio-ecojustice (2 theses), and Application/Design (1 thesis). In general, the analyzes revealed that, even though there is a consensus among the academic community involved with studies on STS education, different interpretations of STS-based Science education have been emerging along decades, which reveals a field under construction and reconstruction.

A NÃO NEUTRALIDADE NA PERSPECTIVA EDUCACIONAL CIÊNCIA-TECNOLOGIA-SOCIEDADE / THE NON NEUTRALITY IN THE EDUCACIONAL PERSPECTIVE SCIENCE-TECHNOLOGY-SOCIETYSantos, Rosemar Ayres dos 27 January 2012 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The origin of the movement known as Science-Technology-Society (STS), with repercussions
in the Science Education, is associated to the questioning of the supposed neutrality of
Science & Technology (CT). In Science Education, in the Brazilian context, STS can be
considered a growing line of research, in a process of consolidation. However, how the nonneutrality
of Science & Technology has been worked, in this line of research, considering the
production of knowledge present in Brazilian journals from the area of Science Education?
This constitutes the research problem. It is aimed to analyze how the non-neutrality of CT, in
the CTS line of research, has been worked on the production of knowledge, present in
Brazilian journals in the area of Science Education. As specific objectives: to identify and to
characterize the approach given to the dimensions of the non-neutrality of Science-
Technology in Brazilian journals, from the area of Science Education; to deep the
understanding about the non-neutrality of Science-Technology and to signal referrals for the
Science Education, which contribute to the understanding of non- neutrality of Science-
Technology, particularly in the field CTS. In terms of theoretical and methodological
referrals, consists of qualitative research, bibliographical, being the corpus of analysis
constituted from articles presented in three journals published in Brazil, of the area of Science
Education. This was submitted to the discursive textual analysis, which consisted of three
steps: unitarization, categorization and communication. From the search results, was produced
a metatext. The interaction between theoretical and empirical elements resulted in three
categories, which summarize the research results: a) the agenda transfers intentions to the
scientific-technological product; b) partial understanding of the non-neutrality of CT; and c)
the knowledge produced (product) does not is the result only of the traditional epistemic
factors: logic + experience.
particularmente no campo CTS.

POLUIÇÃO COMO TEMÁTICA PARA CONSTRUÇÃO DO CONHECIMENTO QUÍMICO DE REAÇÕES REDOX SOB UMA PERSPECTIVA CTSA / POLLUTION AS A THEME FOR CONSTRUCTION OF CHEMICAL KNOWLEDGE OF REDOX REACTIONS UNDER A PERSPECTIVE STSEKlein, Sabrina Gabriela 08 January 2016 (has links)
Fundação de Amparo a Pesquisa no Estado do Rio Grande do Sul / In search of a distinctive chemical education, with meaning for social and productive life of young high school students, the present study investigates how the theme "pollution" may facilitate the construction of the teaching and learning process of redox reactions content of high school students under a STSE (Science-Technology-Society-Environment) approach. For this, firstly, we sought theoretical references about the conceptual part of redox reactions and the theme "pollution". Then, we conducted an analysis of papers published in the journal Chemistry at the New School , with the intention of investigating how the redox reactions have been explored, their different approaches and their impact on the teaching of chemistry. From this, we developed a proposal to approach the redox reactions in the classroom, which was assessed through interventions with the second year high school students from a public school of Santa Maria, RS. Interventions in the classroom were carried out in two steps, both based on the methodology of the three pedagogical moments. The first developed inorganic redox content associated with the pollution of soil, whereas the second involved some organic redox reactions through the water pollution, specifically the treatment of effluents. This is a qualitative research. To collect data, we use questionnaires and textual productions, they were analyzed according to the Discursive Textual Analysis. The results allowed us to conclude that the development of redox reactions associated with the theme "pollution" by a STSE perspective favored teaching and learning of chemistry, as we observe an improvement in the construction of students knowledge.

Previous issue date: 2018-08-07 / This work appropriates the Actor-Network Theory as a theoretical and methodological
reference to elaborate a Didactic Sequence in which students of the Secondary School can
explore controversies around techno-scientific artifacts. From the principles of generalized
symmetry and reflexivity, we expanded our understanding of the theoretical body to reflect on
the Didactic Sequence constructed as a network of human and non-human actors in constant
interest dispute. Thus, the overall objective of the work was to identify which nodes hold the
networks built to each other. Among the actors identified in this construction, we highlight the
authors of the Didactic Sequence (researcher, teacher of the university field and teacher of
the school field), the high school students who became involved in the activities, the
theoretical reference adopted and the studies of the relations between Science, Technology
and Society. It should be noted that each of these actors associate with others in a
heterogeneous network and in constant movement. In each chapter we map the actorsnetworks
that translate this attempt to converge interests and values of the researcher,
Actor-Network Theory, Research in Science Teaching and School. Finally, we indicate some of
the clashes perceived in the process, as well as fight that, although they are bubbling, go
unnoticed by some of the actors present.
atores presentes.
