Lambert, Annie 05 1900 (has links)
The following research concerns the risk management in the matter of decision-making concerning child protection. The object is a better understanding of the practice through the construction of logics of action engaged by professionals as well as reflections on the meaning they attach to their actions. The research is supported by a constructivist posture: professionals “built up” the child problematic situation as well as they “built up” the situation. Base on combination of reflexivity (Schön; Racine; Giddens) and ethical deliberation (Bossé, Morin and Dallaire), focus groups took place involving professionals of different positions at the Youth Protection Center in the Eastern Township area. Those groups involved a qualitative methodology including actor’s speech and are accompanied by individuals interviews as a complementary data collection. The data were explored by content analysis in three axes (Van der Maren): a horizontal analysis (identify major’s elements with ethical deliberation frame work), a vertical analysis (identify interactions and influences in the focus groups) and a cross-sectorial analysis (identify nucleus of meaning and logic of action through speech). The results allow establishing sequences in decision making of professionals from which to build the logic of action. Three approaches have emerged from content analysis ⎯ collaborative, deliberative, legalistic ⎯ which are based upon several dimensions grouped into three areas of interest: the relation to the mandate of protection, compared to the situation and report at risk. Beyond the logic themselves, the results also reflect elements of process that influence decision making. These factors point to explore and question the professional posture and belief, dialogue and space translation and the contribution of collective deliberation. Ultimately, the research helps to reaffirm the complexity of the practice of child protection but it also leads to argue for an awareness of the practice. Identify logical action provides key reflexivity for professionals leading them to their awareness and decision-making and access to risk management fair and justified.

Reconfiguring gendered independence: conceptual struggles in women's organizations

Gartside, Crystal Rose 17 December 2007 (has links)
This research explores how concepts of women’s independence are constituted, through neo-liberal and feminist discourses, by members of a feminist organization for women leaving abuse. Analysis of eight interviews and eight focus groups with organizational members, collected over a four year period, surface contesting discourses about individualism, choice, economic independence, collectivity and structural analyses. These discourses interact to produce complex conceptualizations of women’s independence, and produced new subjectivities for women within the organization. In the data, neo-liberal and feminist influences produced an integration of self-responsibility and collectivity, creating new ways of understanding women’s agency. Knowledge of these changing notions of gendered independence in organizations allows feminists to be strategic and reflexive about feminist political work within changing social and political terrain.

Supporting the transformation of vulnerable youth : how community-based youth projects assist youth to make and maintain positive changes in their lives

Sparks, Carol A. 10 June 2008 (has links)
In British Colombia, youth are subject to risks that influence their capacity to develop into healthy adults. Community-based youth projects play an important role in supporting youth to develop the motivation, skills and knowledge to overcome challenges in their lives and surroundings. In this grounded theory study 1 examined how community-based youth projects can assist youth to make and maintain positive changes in their lives. Data were collected from staff as well as from people in the community involved with youth in the projects. The findings demonstrate that adults staff and people in the community) involved with the projects engage in a process, named in this thesis as "Supporting Transformation", a process that includes the following categories of action: "Figuring it Out", "Creating Willingness to Engage", 'Introducing a New Way", and "Maintaining Willingness to Engage". By articulating the process of Supporting Transformation, it is hoped that adults will increase their understanding of how to create the conditions that lead to sustainable change in youth.

Front-line practitioner’s experience of working with children or youth engaged in suicidal behaviour

Ranahan, Patricia 11 June 2008 (has links)
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the experience of front-line practitioners working with suicidal children and youth. Five front-line practitioners who had experienced working with children or youth who were suicidal participated in the semi-structured interviews. Transcripts of the interviews were analyzed and summarized under the following three areas of experience: Participants' Descriptions of Working with Suicidal Children and Youth, Knowledge Valued by Participants' to Inform their Practice with Suicidal Children and Youth, and Participants' Physical and Emotional Responses to Suicidal Children and Youth. There were a total of sixteen emergent theme clusters. The themes related to the experience of practice with suicidal children and youth provided a rich context for understanding the nature of meaning of the suicidal behaviors for participants. The emergent themes relating to the knowledge valued by participants to guide their approach provided a specific understanding of the multiple sources of knowledge participants were drawing from in the encounters. The emergent themes relating to the physical and emotional responses participants experienced in relation to their encounters with a suicidal child or youth provided an awareness of the impact the encounters had on participants. The major findings included the participants' broad scope of knowledge they used to guide their approach, as well as that encounters with suicidal children and youth did evoke strong physical and emotional responses amongst participants. The study concludes by describing the implications of these findings for Child and Youth Care practice and for future directions in research.

Ezequiel de Souza 20 May 2015 (has links)
Introduction: Liberation theology signaled a theoretical commitment to the community practice of de-privatizing the Christian faith in Latin America, supported by the Idea of liberation and its holistic implications. Consequently, the notion of liberation corresponded to the opposite equivalent of dependence within the methodological framework of the Biblical-theological approach. Thus we present in the research now submitted to evaluation, the conceptual relation that exists between Latin American theology and the criticism of the theoretical structure of underdevelopment, that is, the theory of dependence. Goal: To comprehend the meaning of the opposite correlation of liberation with regard to dependence from its specificities according to the perspective of the liberation intellectuals, and identify the way in which dependence was appropriated to respond to the socio-analytical responsive theoretical framework of these intellectuals, as well as perceive up to what point this manner of theological labor represented an epiphenomenal identity type. Methods: Historicalsystematic research of an exploratory type with a descriptive-analytical orientation, organized on classificatory patterns the layout of which seeks to indicate the evolution within the level of social interaction of the Latin American intellectuals who are disputing for the symbolic goods within the religious field, which is to say, the theological interpretation. The interpretation of the texts gathered here followed a comprehensive hermeneutical pattern presupposed within the weak thought and in the Latin American theological antilogy. Results: Stemming from the observation of the theoretical refraction of dependence toward liberation one can clearly see the epiphenomenological. concept of a Latin American theological intelligentsia as well the reception of the criticism of underdevelopment, of dependence as a hermeneutical unit correlating with the theological work on liberation, which should be learned through a dialecticalconflictual criterion. The concept of liberation thus appears as the theological interpretation of a whole theoretical field assumed indistinctly, that is, the theory of dependence. Conclusion: There is nothing more wrong, therefore, than to assume the opposite correlation between dependence and liberation as an affirmation of similarity between the theorized real (dependence) and the hypothetical conceptualization of the action maxims (liberation) since the option for a general theory (that of anti-imperialism) was received within the theological work in the name of interdisciplinarity. The implicit result was to dispense with the interpreted empiricism in an autonomous way in favor of the mobile human moral in order to recover the prophetic tradition.
