Moment Variations: For Orchestra and Choir

Theis, Charles W. 05 1900 (has links)
Moment Variations is a three-movement composition for chamber orchestra and chamber choir of approximately 21 minutes duration. The basis of this piece is compositional unity through variations technique, where the retained element of the theme is its structure or fixed-structure variations. The fixed-structure is a succession of six musical events, called moments, in the order: I II III II IV V III V VI, where moments II, III, and V are internally repeated and I, IV, and VI occur only once.

Obtaining archaeointensity data from British Neolithic pottery: A feasibility study

Allington, M.L., Batt, Catherine M., Hill, M.J., Nilsson, A., Biggin, A.J., Card, N. 30 March 2021 (has links)
Yes / There is a significant lack of geomagnetic field strength (archaeointensity) measurements for many archaeological time periods in the United Kingdom (UK). This not only makes past geomagnetic secular variation difficult to model but also limits the development of archaeointensity dating. This paper presents the first archaeointensity study on UK Neolithic material. In this study, twenty-five sherds of Neolithic Grooved Ware pottery from the Ness of Brodgar, Orkney, UK, some with direct radiocarbon dates, were subjected to a full archaeomagnetic investigation with the aim of increasing the amount of archaeointensity data for the UK. Both thermal Thellier and microwave palaeointensity experiments were used to determine which technique would be most suitable for British Neolithic pottery. Three successful archaeointensity results between 35 and 40μT were obtained using thermal Thellier method, which is consistent with the limited data available within a 15° radius and geomagnetic field model predictions from the same time. We separated the results into four different types with an intention of explaining the behaviours that determine the likelihood of achieving an acceptable archaeointensity estimate. The feasibility of obtaining geomagnetic field strength information during the UK Neolithic from ceramics has been demonstrated and the results provide a solid basis for improving our knowledge of geomagnetic secular variation during archaeological time in Britain. / The Andy Jagger Fund, University of Bradford, for supporting the stay at the University of Liverpool and Crafoord Grant, Sweden, No. 20160763. Transfigurações: religião da arte nas poéticas de Álvares de Azevedo e de Cruz e Sousa / Transfigurations: religion of art in the poetics by Alvares de Azevedo and Cruz e Sousa

Araujo, Manuella Miki Souza 15 October 2018 (has links)
In the nineteenth-century Brazilian poetics, there are recurrent links between artistic practice and religious cult. Especially in Romantic and Symbolist works, the poet appears as a priest, prophet, initiate, alchemist, monk, seer, fallen angel and other variants, being given the power to dissolve and reshape reality and subjectivity through language. Since the end of the eighteenth century in Europe, it is possible to scan the effort to formulate a religion of art, in which a secular cult of the creative imagination is established. This study analyzes these discussions in the poetics of Álvares de Azevedo and Cruz e Sousa, two examples of secular creators who internalize cosmogonic myths, initiatory rites and alchemical processes, like metaphors allusive to processes of transfiguration, through which it becomes possible for the artist to play, at the same time, the roles of creator and creature, subject and object, polarities mobilized in the reflective work of the subject on the self. The work of art aims to synthesize a new unity, articulating the conscious and unconscious practices of the torn modern subject. In the first two chapters dedicated to Álvares de Azevedo, there is the romantic wish for the revitalization of the weary and dying subject and world. The desire for to renew forms, values and meanings motivates the elaboration of prophecies of humanitys rebirth, which is reconfigured from the ruins of its past. The metaphors of infanticide and abortion allude to the unrealized utopia. The third and fourth chapters, focused on the poetics of Cruz e Sousa, explore the poets questioning about the possibilities of transformation of himself and reality through art and culture in a structurally racist country. The metaphors of blackness and shadow allude to the poet\'s difficulty to shape a stable and well-defined form of himself, in which interiority and exteriority are harmonized. The rewriting of the myth of the Twelve Works of Hercules dramatizes the social impediments faced by the Black artist in the search for literary consecration. Finally, the announcement of the prophecy of the future Dante, born out of inconceivable pain, signals the need to elaborate a new sublime form, capable of assimilating the Black subject as theme and poetic voice.

Desenvolvimento e aplicação de sistema classificatório para avaliação do estado nutricional de crianças e adolescentes brasileiros baseado no índice de massa corporal\" / Development and classificatory system application for evaluation of brazilian child and teenagers nutritional status based on the body mass index

Conde, Wolney Lisbôa 26 January 2004 (has links)
Objetive. Drawing the Brazilian reference curve Body Mass lndex (BMI) to evaluate the nutritional status from Brazilian children and adolescents. Method. It were used the LMS method to calculate the BMI curve parameters and the polynomial function to model the parameters across age. The BMI healthy distribution was taken from data of individuais from 2 to 19 years of the Pesquisa Nacional Saúde e Nutrição, carried out in 1989. The BMI cutoff values to classify nutritional status were realized as percentiles and as BMI adult-equivalent values to 17.5, 25 and 30 kg/m2 at earty adult age. The Brazilian curve was calibrated against the reference population and compared to others foreign reference curves. Finally, the Brazilian curve was used to describe the secular change of the studied group across three decades. Results. The results were realized in five papers. The first one presents the L, M and S parameters and the BMI cutoffs as percentiles and as adult-equivalents values. At the second, the I, M and S parameters were calibrated according to the source reference population. At the third one, the Brazilian curve was compared, using the basics, to foreign curves. At the fourth, the clinical consequences from employment of the Brazilian and foreign curves to the Brazilian population were measured. At the fifth, the secular changes in BMI distribution and at the nutritional status from Brazilian children and adolescents were described through three decades.

Teaching About Religion in a Post-Soviet State : An Examination of Textbooks in Kazakhstan's Upper Secondary School System

Ohlsson, Henrik January 2014 (has links)
The search for new identity factors and shared values in the post-Soviet region has given rise to a process of reevaluation of the role of religion in society. Not least the Central Asian countries are struggling with these issues in their nation building processes. They share important parts of their history with other Muslim dominated nations, but the Soviet heritage sets them apart. The focus of this study lies on the way religion as a general concept and Islam in particular are treated in four textbooks used in Kazakhstan’s school education. The contents of the textbooks are analyzed within a historical and societal context as well as a framework of contemporary secularity theory. The results elucidate a contrast between the discourse on religion found in the textbooks and the official legal status of religion in Kazakhstan today, which is taken as an indication of an ongoing reevaluation of religion leading away from the staunch Soviet secularity and possibly towards a situation where religion is seen as a natural part of societal developments. At the same time, however, the normative effect of official discourse is a double-edged sword, which, while shaping ideas of what religion is and ought to be, may also undermine the credibility and authority of a religion too closely associated with political authority.

Orientador: Maria Beatriz Rocha Ferreira / Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Faculdade de Educação Fisica / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-13T09:22:35Z (GMT). / Abstract: This paper aimed to analyze throughout cross-sectional approach the lifestyle, physical activity level and adolescents physical fitness living at two different regions from Sao Paulo State: one at metropolitan area and other (Santo André) city and other from Sao Paulo countryside area (São Bento do Sapucaí). We compared the lifestyle in both region in 1997 and 2007, as well as the physical activity level, physical fitness and psychological and cultural factors (determinants factor) in adolescents from the same city, but ten years evaluation gap (1997-2007). The relationship among physical activity level and socio, cultural and biological variables were evaluated at 2007 sample, by multiple regression analysis (Hierarchical Model). 484 both sexes adolescents from different regions and periods were evaluated. The psycho-socio-cultural variables were determined by the Physical Activity and Lifestyle Questionnaire (Figueira Junior and Rocha Ferreira, 2000), that was organized to find the house characteristics; school physical activity practice, physical activity level and lifestyle indicators. The physical fitness variables were evaluated following Matsudo,V (2005) to anthropometric measures: body weight (Kg), statures (m); metabolic by maximal aerobic oxygen consumption (12 minutes run test) and neuromotors variables: lower limbs strength test by vertical jump test with and without help of arms movement, stand long jump, trunk abdominal strength and shuttle-run agility test. The descriptive statistics analysis chosen was the Student t test, Mann-Whitney to non-parametric approaches and Chi-Square (?2) to linear trend and Fisher Test. The hierarchical model was assessed by Poisson multivariate regression with CI - 95%. The results were compared between regions and evaluation period and presented changes (p.<05) on male adolescents stature (1997-2007) and body weight (Santo André). The muscle strength showed increases for both groups and period. The same trend was observed for agility and trunk strength. The analysis by sex did not presented chances girls on physical fitness, except from Sao Bento do Sapucaí adolescents. The active adolescents' physical activity increased in 2007 compared to 1997 in both region and sex. Walking as health-related locomotion, positively contribute for total physical activity. The barriers to physical activity showed higher prevalence in Santo André sample than in Sao Bento do Sapucaí in 2007 than 1997, that can explain the physical activity level. The physical appearance worry, lack of parents stimulus and place to physical activity practice were the most barriers found. Multivariate regression showed that physical education classes participation, more siblings walking or riding a bike to or back from school are variables that may protect against physical inactivity at both regions. So, we may conclude that 10 years interval between evaluations resulted on different adolescents behavior related to physical activity level and sociocultural approaches. / Doutorado / Atividade Fisica, Adaptação e Saude / Doutor em Educação Física

Post-Secular Tourism : A Study of Pilgrimages to Santiago de Compostela

Nilsson, Mats January 2016 (has links)
This thesis takes its starting-point in the post-secular changes in society and how these interplay with tourism. In spite of the intensive academic debate on and theorisation of the post-secular and post-secularism, the role of tourism in this change, called the return of religion, has not been studied. Conversely, neither has the role of post-secularism in tourism been addressed. The overall aim of this thesis is to describe and understand the relation between post-secularism and tourism. Specifically, the aim is to clarify and understand the relation between religious faith, place and tourism in our time on the basis of a case study of pilgrimage in the area of Santiago de Compostela. In other words, the thesis highlights the role of tourism in the emergence of what is now called the post-secular condition. Santiago de Compostela is a Catholic Church instituted holy city, which has increase in number of visitors. The growing number of pilgrimages and their significance lend vitality to the return of religion phenomenon. The empirical material derives primarily from individual interviews as narratives are considered to be a vital dimension to constitute and construct human realities and modes of being. This thesis shows that contemporary pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela is a post-secular performative and place-creating phenomenon. Post-secular tourist places are subjective and spiritually meaningful destinations. Unlike traditional pilgrimage destinations a key attribute is that neither traditional religious faith nor loyalty to institutionalised faith are (pre)ordained. Rather, place is constructed by the narratives and experiences of post-secular tourists. / This thesis takes its starting-point in the post-secular changes in society and how these interplay with tourism.
