Meireluce de Andrade Santos 30 March 2015 (has links)
Phenomenal Acquaintance

Trogdon, Kelly 01 September 2009 (has links)
Chapter 1 of Phenomenal Acquaintance is devoted to taking care of some preliminary issues. I begin by distinguishing those states of awareness in virtue of which we’re acquainted with the phenomenal characters of our experiences from those states of awareness some claim are at the very nature of experience. Then I reconcile the idea that experience is transparent with the claim that we can be acquainted with phenomenal character. In Chapter 2 I set up a dilemma that is the primary focus of the dissertation. In the first part of this chapter I argue that phenomenal acquaintance has three key features, what I call its ‘directness’, ‘thickness’, and ‘infallibility’. In the second part I argue, however, that it’s really quite puzzling how thoughts about phenomenal character (or any thoughts, for that matter) could have them. In the next two chapters I consider how we might resolve the dilemma described above. I begin in Chapter 3 by considering an account of phenomenal acquaintance inspired by Bertrand Russell’s discussion of acquaintance. The general idea here is to excise mental representation from phenomenal acquaintance, and I ultimately reject the proposal. Chapter 4 is the core chapter of Phenomenal Acquaintance. In it I propose an account of phenomenal acquaintance that doesn’t excise mental representation. My account is comprised of three theses. First, token experiences are complex and have instances of phenomenal properties as components. Second, instances of phenomenal properties are mental representations, and they represent themselves. Third, the attention relevant to phenomenal acquaintance is underwritten by self-representation. I argue that my account explains how phenomenal acquaintance is direct, thick, and infallible, thereby resolving our dilemma. I argue in Chapter 5 that my account of phenomenal acquaintance explains why there is an explanatory gap between the phenomenal and non-phenomenal truths. Accordingly, I conclude that the explanatory gap doesn’t pose a problem for physicalism. Here I implement what has come to be called the ‘phenomenal concept strategy’ for responding to the challenge posed by the explanatory gap.

Exploring the internal configuration of the cycloid personality : a Rorschach comprehensive system

Daws, Loray 16 June 2012 (has links)
Exploring the cycloid temperament has been attempted throughout the ages by various pioneers in psychiatry, psychology and psychoanalysis. Contemporary psychiatric approaches have estimated that cycloid pathology, most evident as Bipolar Disorder, accounts for more than 1% of the population and is seen as the sixth leading cause of all illnesses. Despite the latter it is remains a desperately understudied area psychologically. Theoretically, BD is known for (1) its complex epidemiology, (2) costly treatment, (3) occupational impairment; (4) its negative interpersonal implications, (5) negative domestic effects, (6) forensic consequences, (7) death due to suicide and accidents, (8) cost in treatment, and finally, and most importantly from a humanistic perspective, (9) BD's diminished quality of life. Given the various realities faced by those suffering from Bipolar disorder the current study aimed at describing, through the use of the Rorschach Comprehensive system (CS), the self and object-representations, as well as the affect experiences of fifty, predominantly Bipolar I inpatients. The patients were selected through opportunity sampling at two provincial psychiatric hospitals in South Africa and included Caucasian, African and Colored respondents. All protocols were administered and scored by trained CS clinicians and re-scored by both the author and supervisor. Fifteen protocols were thereafter randomly assigned to three inter-raters and a high level of inter-rater reliability seemed evident. Given various inherent limitations of the study, that is, (a) a study of limited scope, (b) the heterogeneous nature of the sample and the reliance on opportunity sampling, (c) the small sample size, (d) lack of a control group, and (d) the focus of the study as exploratory-descriptive in nature, basic descriptive statistic were relied upon. Despite the various limitations, the results obtained seemed to hint at the possibility of a Neglected Self, characterised by difficulties in modulating affect in moderation, lack of self-esteem and positive self-regard, difficulties in introspection and self-inspecting behaviour, a general lack of interpersonal comfort and feelings of threat, as well as affectional and representational constriction. The presence of impaired self-regulation and reflection, possible perceptual differences in sensory-affective reactivity and processing, as well as difficulties in representational elaboration and differentiation needs further research and comparison to other psychiatric disorders. Basic therapeutic inferences were also discussed that may support those who treat cycloid patients. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2012. / Psychology / unrestricted

Ethnic Minorities in Brazil and Spain: Erasure and Stigmatization, Gender, and Self-Representation of Indigenous and Roma Communities

Luna Freire, Juliana Henriques de January 2012 (has links)
This research is an interdisciplinary work on the use of media by marginalized ethnic minorities for self-representation, using as its frame of reference scholars such as Faye Ginsburg, Gayatri Spivak, Judith Butler, Stuart Hall, Achille Mbembe, and David Harvey. Specifically, this dissertation examines Indigenous communities in Brazil and the Roma (Gypsy) population of Spain, uncovering the multiple discourses through which ethnic identities have to be negotiated within a larger dominant culture, especially in contexts of globalization, and brings to this discussion the theorization of new media. These two highly stigmatized populations have been finding new and more democratic venues for collectively defining their own cultures in the complex process of identity (re)creation. Based on interviews with media producers, I discuss community radio stations, online network groups, video making, and blogs, and how these constitute different tools for promoting culture and conducting political activism. Through constant performances of culture, I argue, they are able to restore and participate in the dialogue on self-determination and minority rights in a different sphere of discourse, both locally and globally, at the same time that they also influence their own (and others') understanding of their ethnic identity. In terms of the impact of media products produced autonomously or in collaboration with non-Indigenous groups, this research also addresses the fact that, despite the efforts of both Indigenous and Roma groups in using these new media as non-hegemonic communication venues, their invisibility as a subject is often repeated, even when sympathetically supported by the discourse of cultural diversity, due to financial and distribution constraints. Ultimately, this study brings together their similarities and differences to determine how these technologies can be both helpful or hinder the self-affirmation and increased autonomy of ethnic minority groups.

Moreau, Denis 21 September 2013 (has links)
This thesis is devoted to the study of metafictional techniques and stakes in Fantastic literature. Intertextual references, autorepresentation, aesthetic distance, story within a story, metalepsis : this techniques draw attention to the text's fictionality. On the other hand, we will see how metafictionality can be considered as inherent to the fantastic fiction, understand here as a mode of representation.

Discursos e práticas: um estudo do jornalismo investigativo no Brasil / -

Melo, Seane Alves 03 July 2015 (has links)
Quais as definições do jornalismo investigativo no Brasil? / What are the definitions of investigative journalism in Brazil? In professional practice, which distinguishes it from ordinary journalism and other specialties of the area? What are the acclaim criteria of a journalist as an investigative reporter? These and other questions are at the core of this research that seeks to identify the emergence conditions of discourses on investigative journalism in our country, and, primarily, clarify the appropriations made from them. Our aim was to understand the investigative journalism definitions that have been put forth in the national bibliography in light of disputes that take shape within the journalistic field. We started from the analysis of theoretical works on the subject, investigative reports collections and documentary sources (such as results of awards, associations data etc.) to gather definitions, references and appropriations of the \"investigative journalism\" discourse in our country. During the research - which focused on the analysis of works published mainly between 1970 and 2010 - we were able to identify three areas in which IJ definitions could be divided (one focusing on the journalist\'s active role, the other focusing on the denunciation function and a third part who considers investigative journalism pleonastic) and at least three different uses of this journalistic branch: sometimes it appears as synonymous with cover story, occasionally it is identified with police reporting and, after the democratization and professionalization of Brazilian journalism, it will be identified with political scandal. We argue that each of these shifts of direction, which are sometimes very subtle and not necessarily linear, can be understood as stances regarding events and changes that occurred during the period such as: the end of censorship and the beginning of the political relaxation of the military regime, the growth of the role of Public Relations and press offices, professional regulations and development of journalism education, as well as editorial reform in major media outlets. Understanding these disputes and in light of the changes in the field promoted by the media, we advocate a new understanding of investigative journalism, in terms of its position in relation to the power sphere, a sphere that refuses criteria based purely based on the reporting methods or its effects.

\'A vida será literaturizada\': a escrita epistolar de Italo Svevo / Life will be literaturized: Italo Svevo\'s epistolary writing

Thaís Helena de Barros Neves Cavalcanti 15 August 2017 (has links)
Italo Svevo\'s epistolary, first published in 1966, offers itself to the critic as a tangle of problems that can be interpreted using multiple approaches: historical, linguistic, literary etc. After recognizing in the letters of the Triestino writer a series of themes also developed in his literary works, we proposed the hypothesis that the letters became for him a writing laboratory. He could exercise his language, his literary procedures and still construct for an image of himself as an artist. In order to demonstrate the validity of our hypothesis, we investigated the epistolary personae constructed throughout the correspondence of the writer and how they contributed both to the creation of literary characters and to the elaboration of an authorial scenography. After that we did a comparative analysis between some of Italo Svevo\'s letters to his wife and some excerpts from his novel Zeno\'s Conscience, verifying to what extent the themes were reproduced or transformed within the novel structure. At the end of this dissertation, we present the annotated translation of some letters of the writer as a complement to the observations developed here.

The Meruri Village, located in the municipality of General Carneiro (MT), was selected as the study space. The long 114-year coexistence between Bororo and Salesian missionaries brought about unique changes in the exercise of indigenous power. But these were not in a relationship of authoritarianism or oppression. Even with the effects of the positivist mentality of the earliest times, adaptations and resignifications were established, culminating in a unique alliance that reached the symbol of the shed blood. The comparison of power in the traditional village with that of the present one shows that the figures of power have changed, but the main source of authority remains the same: society itself as a whole / A presente pesquisa refere-se a um estudo histórico, antropológico, religioso e político-social sobre o exercício das estruturas de poder tradicionais do Povo Bororo, suas grandes mudanças ao longo da história, como ele se organiza hoje e sua aproximação com o movimento indígena atual, no contexto das lutas dos movimentos populares brasileiros.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Ana Carolina Godefroid.pdf: 10967443 bytes, checksum: dc6862f4e52e36905b090c0a0ba4c2bd (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-09-12 / Conselho Nacional de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico - CNPq / The possibility of ordinary people being able to produce and share videos, results in a significant expansion of the audio visual content, due to the digitalization of tools and platforms of communication. The exponential growth of amateur videos posted and shared on Youtube is the starting point of this reflection: Understanding the representation of one's "Self" and the production, such as the distribution system that, consequently, it demands. Everyday moments can become special. As has been witnessed a long the history of photography, and the magical relation people build with their photographs. This way, what was at first a simple documentation, becomes a performance in a perpetual motion that feeds off it's own re-interpretation, transforming this documentation in to content that completes, interacts, and sometimes transforms it's reality. The issue is: what are the chosen references and how do these types of productions reproduce the living or shared realities? And is there a difference between them? In this context the "Self" emerges as a representation, but also opens the possibility of transforming into an actor. Loosing it's personal characteristics. This way, the practice of video's representation, appropriation, recreation and sharing is audio visual language shifts with new network technology, creating formats that dialogue with documentary, but also changes its premisses. How do these new technologies enable most people to become audio visual producers and, most importantly, producers pf their own "Selfs" / As possibilidades de registro e compartilhamento de vídeos por usuários comuns permitem uma ampliação da produção audiovisual, a partir da digitalização de fluxos, plataformas e ferramentas de comunicação.
