Gavin Hamilton, John Balfour and Patrick Neill : a study of publishing in Edinburgh in the eighteenth century

McDougall, Warren January 1975 (has links)
Eighteenth-century Scottish bibliography is a vast subject still awaiting exploration. There are, however, some landmarks to look for and guides to employ. I am thinking particularly, in the context of my own interests, of the writings of Philip Gaskell, and a work that should open up new sources, Robert H. Carnie’s awaited dictionary of the Scottish Book trade. The national Library of Scotland is in the early stages of compliling a catalogue of its eighteenth-century Scottish books which, no matter what form it takes, will provide scholars with a major tool. The description of books has been and doubtless will continue to be a controvertial subject, but those students who have much to identify can take encouragement, I believe from David Foxon’s ‘Thoughts on the History and future of Bibliographical Description’. In this work I map some particular and general areas of Scottish publishing history by examining the partnership of Gavin Hamilton and John Balfour, and the association they formed with the printer Patrick Neill. I study the partners in their own right as booksellers, publishers and printers, but I am concerned also with the larger bibliographical background. Hamilton and Balfour were strong-willed individuals who bought the force of their personal and private interests to bear on their professional lives; Hamilton, especially, in the period under consideration, saw little difference between his duty as a Scottish gentleman and his activities as a Scottish publisher. He and Balfour were far-sighted and adventurous, and deserve to be thought of as central figures in the story of the Edinburgh book trade.

Abordagem semiótica dos textos de auto-ajuda /

Merenciano, Levi Henrique. January 2009 (has links)
Nesse caso... For this reason, this work proposes to study the linguistic and discursive processes related to bestselling books of self-help literature in the period 1991-2006, by means of the lists of bestsellers in the Self-Help genre organized and listed weekly by Veja, a Brazilian news magazine. Starting from a corpus collected from these book lists, the aim is to suggest a linguistic typology for the current best-selling self-help books. The methodological perspective of Greimasian semiotics has appropriate criteria for the description of the level of contents, aiming at suggesting more elaborate typological definitions of discourses. The deep, narrative and discursive levels, in its syntagmatic and paradigmatic dimensions of the generative process of meaning, can offer enough descriptive elements, according to the large or small incidence - focus - of its semiotic components in the organization of discourses, such as: the axiological investment of thymic deep components (euphoria and dysphoria); the path of functional actants (sender-manipulator, receiver-subject and sender-judge); the narrative phases (manipulation, competence, perfórmance and sanction); the characteristics of the object of value (cognitive, pragmatic, modal or descriptive); the projection of the subject of enunciation (how sender and receiver can be linguistically manifest); and the discursive level components (texts which are predominantly thematic, predominantly figurative or thematic and figurative in equal measure). Self-help books, similarly to technical discourses (culinary recipes, instruction manuals), tend to focus on the phase of competence. In it, the sender-manipulator makes its receiver-subject (the reader's discursive projection) "knowing-how-to-do" and "be able-to-do" so he or she elaborate the subjective object wanted...(Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Mestre

Att konstruera en lag : en diskursanalys av förarbeten till sexköpslagen / Designing a law : a discourse analysis of the preliminary work of the Sex Purchase Act

Bodin, Berit, Röed, Katarina January 2014 (has links)
The aim of this study was to identify and analyze the dominating discourse in the preliminary work of the Sex Purchase Act. In order to achieve the aim of this study we selected preliminary work of the Sex Purchase Act that was produced between 1977 and 1999. The selection is based on the fact that prostitution began to be recognized as a social problem and a gender equality issue between men and women in society. The ongoing debate during the chosen years resulted in the Sex Purchase Act, which was passed in 1999. By using discourse analysis as a methodological and theoretical approach, we have empirically studied and theoretically analyzed the dominating discourse in the preliminary work of the Sex Purchase Act. This study shows that the dominating discourse in the preliminary work is based on a perception that prostitution reflects violence against women, which prevents women and men from becoming equal in society. The dominating discourse in the preliminary work is characterized by a heteronormative standard and has influences that can be recognized as feminist ideology. The content in the dominating discourse is produced by people with high social status, which gives sex buyers and sex workers limited influence on how their categories are presented in the preliminary work.
