Thesis advisor: William Stanwood / The textual analysis of season four, episode one of Mad Men entitled “Public Relations” study the productions values in terms of feminist motifs. By using social codes developed by Leed-Hurwitz and Barthes’ five systems of meaning in semiotics, observations are made about the elements of the mise-en-scène in relation to the gender roles present in the narrative. If certain codes persist, it is assumed that these repetitive observations reflect the deliberate composition of the mise-en-scènce in order to reinforce feminist motifs. The results reveal that the production values in the mise-en-scène indeed reinforce feminist motifs in Mad Men, the most comprehensive motif being the male gender as the norm. The messages communicated by this motif include the idea that masculinity is defined by sex and that a women’s worth is defined by masculinity. / Thesis (BA) — Boston College, 2011. / Submitted to: Boston College. Neste trabalho, apresentamos os resultados de uma pesquisa que aproxima a teoria semiótica e a literatura. Tal estudo consistiu na análise de um texto literário: o conto Menina a caminho, de autoria do escritor brasileiro contemporâneo Raduan Nassar. Para compreendermos o processo de construção de sentidos engendrado no referido texto, ancoramo-nos na teoria semiótica de linha francesa, ou greimasiana. Por meio do instrumental oferecido por essa teoria, pudemos compreender os mecanismos e efeitos de sentido articulados pelo enunciador do conto que, dentre outros fatores, são os responsáveis pela elevada qualidade estético-literária de seu texto. / In this dissertation, we present the results of a research that approaches the semiotic theory and literature. The study chooses as its subject the short-story Menina a caminho, from the Brazilian contemporary author Raduan Nassar. In order to make explicit the building of the text meaning, we have as approach the French semiotic theory. Through the tools offered by this theory, we can understand the means and meaning effects produced by the short-story enunciator that are responsible for the high aesthetic and literary quality of his text.

Investiga-se como se dá o processo de leitura por meio de um estudo da enunciação e por meio da organização do percurso gerativo do sentido do texto. Investiga-se como o enunciador e o enunciatário (tratados como o autor e o leitor que o texto nos permite apreender) relacionam-se no texto e também quais os valores que aquele transmite a este por meio da circulação de objetos-valor na narrativa escolhida para análise. Para essas investigações tomou-se como corpus a narrativa ficcional juvenil Por onde você andou, Robert?, do escritor alemão Hans Magnus Enzensberger. Nela, um protagonista adolescente abstrai-se da realidade do mundo em que vive e viaja, no tempo e no espaço, sete vezes, sempre para o passado. Essas viagens são comparadas a leituras, por ambas iniciarem-se pelo olhar. Acredita-se que nessas viagens há uma ficcionalização da leitura como um ato, e também que o protagonista busca, como seu objeto valor, o saber. De posse do saber, o protagonista volta a seu mundo original, e sente-se como um leitor realizado, como "alguém que sabe mais do que os outros". / Abstract: This paper presents an study over reading as a discursive process, based on the French semiotics. It investigates how the reading process happens by the study of enunciation and by the organization of the generative process of the meaning in the text. It investigates how the enunciator and the enunciatee (seen as the author and the reader that the text allow us to conceive) relate in the text and which are the values that one passes to the other by the circulation of value objects in the narrative. For these investigations is used a juvenile fictional narrative named "Where have you been, Robert" (Wo warst du, Robert?), by the German author Hans Magnus Enzensberger. In this story, a teenager escapes from the reality of the world where he lives and travels back in time and space, seven times. These trips are compared to reading, as both are understood as a process which starts from the eyes. It is also believed that this narrative fictionalizes the process of reading as an act and that the protagonist searches for knowledge as his value object. When he comes to possess knowledge, he returns to his original world and is satisfied because, as a satisfied reader, he feels as "somebody who knows better than the others". / Mestre

Para tal, alicerçamo-nos no referencial semiótico peirceano, uma vez que o mesmo constitui-se sólida herança para os estudos de filosofia da linguagem. O discurso científico sempre abrigou um paradoxo: ao mesmo tempo em que propõe um registro objetivo, denotativo, comumente lança mão de metáfora/analogias, como recurso para transmitir e auxiliar a construção de conceitos. Um procedimento secular, que apresenta as mais diversas implicações para a ciência e o ensino de ciências. A metáfora é um signo, por conseguinte um operador cognitivo. Este aspecto norteou nossa análise nos enunciados lingüísticos e nas representações pictóricas (feitas em menor quantia). Em que pese tudo o que desabona a utilização do expediente metafórico/analógico, as inferências obtidas nos revelaram em grande medida o inestimável valor deste para o ensino de ciências, especialmente a Biologia, objeto de nossa análise empírica. O objetivo maior, cremo-lo atingido, é contribuir verdadeiramente, de modo direto e simples, aos estudos sobre o tema. / Abstract: The objective of this survey is to investigate the metaphor/analogy use in science education. For that, we based on peircean semiotics reference, because it is a string legacy to language philosophy studies. The scientific speech has always comprised a paradox: at the same time that it proposes an objective, denotative text, it usually employs metaphors/analogies, as a resource to transmit and help the construction of concepts. A secular procedure, which presents several consequences for science and science education. Metaphor is a sign, therefore it is a cognitive operator. This feature has conducted our survey through the linguistic enunciation and pictorial representations (smaller amount). Despite all the facts against the metaphoric/analogical use, our finds revealed the great importance of its use for science education, especially Biology, which is our empiric survey subject. The major objective, we believe it was reached, is to contribute actively, directly and in a simple way, to the surveys concerning this subject. / Mestre

Este autor, leitor declarado dos clássicos, propagou a poesia por meio do rock, fenômeno artístico de massa, compartilhando suas leituras através de suas composições. A intertextualidade se destaca como procedimento de criação em sua obra, repleta de referências explícitas e implícitas. Seguindo orientações de Bakhtin, Kristeva, Perrone-Moisés e Genette procuramos analisar de que maneira a literatura repercutiu na obra de Renato Russo, apontando e discutindo como ele usa a literatura em suas composições e que efeitos de sentido ela provoca em suas letras. O processo dialógico dos textos envolve buscas e retomadas de outros textos, o que nos fez buscar vestígios, indícios, pistas, que permitissem revelar a voz do outro. No entanto, o processo dialógico dos textos nos mostrou que cada novo texto não é mero re-conhecimento dos anteriores, mas ato diferenciado de elocução cuja forma, estrutura ou aparência se mostra modificada em relação à dos textos anteriores, dos quais se arrancam novas variações / Abstract: The aim of this paper is the result of poetic and intertextual manifestations' study in the lyrics of Renato Russo's songs. This author, declared classics' reader, spread poetry through the rock, mass artistic phenomenon, sharing his readings through his compositions. Intertextuality is notable as creation process in his work, full of explicit and implicit references. Following Bakhtin, Kristeva, Perrone-Moisés and Genette's guidelines, we aim to analyze how literature reflected in Renato Russo's work, pointing and arguing how does he use literature in his compositions and which meaning effects it brings to his lyrics. The dialogical process involves searches and revisits of other texts, which made us look for traces, indications, clues, that would allow revealing the voice of the other. However, the dialogic process of the texts showed us that each new text is not merely a re-cognition of the previous, but different speech act whose form, structure or appearance shown modified relative to previous texts, of which it takes off new variations / Mestre

São intervenções e instalações que visam a produção de ambientes e objetos estéticos, com o intuito de atingir o grande público nas metrópoles, sobretudo São Paulo, provocando estranhamento e o choque, a fim de lhes despertar um novo olhar, uma nova mentalidade, uma mudança de hábitos, capaz de garantir a permanência dos sistemas vivos, entre os quais, os seres humanos, considerados, à luz da Teoria Geral de Sistemas, os sistemas biopsicossociais mais complexos existentes no planeta. Os projetos analisados são Natureza Urbana, de que fazem parte quatro instalações, Oceano Invadido e LUXO. Com base em conceitos centrais da Teoria Geral de Sistemas e da Semiótica Peirceana, pretendemos fazer uma análise sistêmico-semiótica dos trabalhos do grupo paulista Bijari, relacionando tais obras com o conceito de permanência na Arte e as ciências normativas de Peirce (semiótica, ética e estética). / Abstract: The objective of this work is to demonstrate, through the semiotic analysis of threesystemic projects Bijari, that art can point out ways that lead to changing habits. Installations and interventions are aimed at the production of aesthetic objects and environments, in order to reach the general public in cities, particularly São Paulo, causing estrangement and shock in order to wake them a new look, a new mentality, a change of habits, able to guarantee the permanence of living systems, including human beings, considered in the light of General Systems Theory, the more complex biopsychosocial systems on the planet. The projects are analyzed Urban Nature, which are part of four facilities, Ocean Invaded and LUXURY. Based on the central concepts of General Systems Theory and Peircean Semiotics, we intend to make a systemicsemiotic analysis of the work of the Bijari, relating these works with the concept of permanence in the Art and normative sciences of Peirce (semiotics, ethics and aesthetics). / Mestre

What am I seeing? What does it mean? This thesis addresses the transformations in cultural life in the 21st century due to the cultural dominance of the image, which resulted from the radical change and enormous progress in the media, communication and the development of information systems in the world. All this has led to changes in the intellectual structure, and an increased tendency to drift in all areas, and the emergence of a society and a culture governed by the culture of shock. The fundamental issue concerning the image is an epistemological issue, as we cannot distinguish between the visual image and the semantic product. We live in a world surrounded with stunning and spectacular visual images. We are overloaded with images from all types in our everyday life. We probably see images more than we read words. This thesis provides an analytical framework for understanding how images produce meanings using the semiotic approach. Semiotics is the most important approach that can be used to analyze all types of images. Semiotic analysis addresses images as signs which communicate meaning. The symbols used in signs are often culturally specific. This thesis indicates the focus of the receiver to adapt to this visual cultural situation, to be able to grasp the content of the new cultural discourse as it is present in all the details of the receiver’s daily life. There have been a number of questions that pushed me to accomplish this research, including: what are the elements of the culture of the image? What is its impact on the mental perception and production of semantic meaning? What is its reflection on the nature of social networking in general? The thesis discussed all of these issues.

O conceito de emancipação vem sendo mencionado no âmbito das discussões sobre juventude no Brasil e no mundo. A semiótica de linha francesa pode agregar reflexões importantes a seu estudo, de modo que as análises desta dissertação tomam como base teórica, sobretudo, as obras de Algirdas Julien Greimas e Claude Zilberberg. O corpus é composto por entrevistas realizadas com jovens habitantes da cidade de São Paulo e o principal tema abordado pelos textos orais é a transição à vida adulta, considerando-se, nessa passagem, por exemplo, as saídas (ou não) da casa dos pais ou as buscas profissionais e pessoais relatadas. Além das entrevistas, são analisados os capítulos iniciais da épica africana Sundjata, ou A epopeia mandinga, de Djibril Tamsir Niane. Dentre os resultados obtidos destacam-se a constatação de que, por um lado, o tratamento narrativo prevalece nos discursos sobre a emancipação e, por outro, a noção de acontecimento (objeto da semiótica tensiva) quase sempre se manifesta na etapa da juventude. / The concept of emancipation is often mentioned nowadays in the discussions about youth in Brazil and around the world. The French School of Semiotics can offer contributions to the study of this object. So, this masters thesis makes use of the works of authors such as Algirdas Julien Greimas and Claude Zilberberg as theoretical basis. The corpus is composed by interviews that were taken of young inhabitants of Sao Paulo city (Brazil). The main theme that was addressed by the reports is the transition to adulthood. In this matter, the informants talked, for example, about leaving (or not) their parents houses and about the paths that they had to go through, in order to achieve professional or personal growth. Besides the interviews, the initial chapters of the African epic Soundjata, ou LÉpopée Mandingue, by Djibril Tamsir Niane, were also analyzed. Among the main results obtained, it is possible to mention the presence of the narrative treatment in the speeches about emancipation, as well as the notion of happening (object of the tensive semiotics), that is frequently manifested in the stage of the youth.
