The imaging technique as learning support for educationally disadvantaged learners in the secondary school, to improve reading comprehensionNgwenya, Mandiza Dinah 01 October 2003 (has links)
Reading comprehension is one of the basic learning skills that need to be learned in an early school years. The English language is generally introduced as early as Grade 2 level in township primary schools. Township learners are at most exposed to English as the language of learning and teaching (LoLt) for three years (Grade 5-7) before entering secondary school. Most township primary school learners enter secondary school with poor English language development and poor language proficiency. Reading comprehension is one of the problems experienced by most township secondary school learners. Lack of reading comprehension skills negatively affect their ability to constuct meaning from what they are reading. Reading support techniques or strategies need to be sought and developed to address the reading comprehension problems experienced by learners especially from the disadvantaged enviroment. ind it difficult to understand or interpret what they are reading. This research focused on the use of the imaging technique on a learning suport in developing reading comprehension skills of township secondary school learners. The emphasis was mainly on how this technique can be adapted in order to enhance its mastery in developing reading comprehension skills. This imaging technique is seen as a feasible technique in a holistic approach to develop reading comprehension skills. The imaging technique makes use of the formation of multisensory pictures during the reading process which are valuable in the independent construction of meaning. The use of imaging for reading enhances active learning and memory. The research was conducted with learners in Grade 9 in a secondary school in a Pretoria township. The participants in the research group experienced reading comprehension problems, lack of English language development and difficulty in the use of English as the (LoLT). Some of the learners in the research group appeared to be experiencing intellectual learning disability. The practical implementation of the imaging technique was done in twenty sessions. A control group attended twenty reading support sessions using a dictionary method, for the same texts. Qualitative and quantitative analyses of the results are performed and discussed. / Thesis (MEd (Educational Psychology))--University of Pretoria, 2004. / Educational Psychology / unrestricted

A life skills programme for learners in the senior phase : a social work perspectiveBender, C.J.G. (Cornelia Johanna Getruida) 22 November 2002 (has links)
Life skills education and training programmes, which offer skills to help people cope with everyday life, have in recent years become a highly popular method of intervention and prevention in social work. It is a proactive method and supports the developmental approach of social welfare. The research entailed the development, implementation and evaluation of the Personal and Interpersonal Life Skills Programme. The intervention research model was employed as foundation for the design and development of the programme and the ecological perspective as the theoretical framework. The study highlighted the school as an appropriate context within which to improve the life skills of learners. The main goal of the study was to develop and implement a personal and interpersonal life skills programme for Grade 7 learners in the senior phase of a school, and to evaluate whether participation in the life skills programme would lead to personal growth (self-empowerment) and social competence and thus contribute to the optimal social functioning of children in the classroom, school, family and community (capacity building). A descriptive design with a quasi-experiment, the one-group pre-test-post-test experiment, was used in this study. A non-parametric statistical test was utilized because the data was measured on an ordinal scale (Wilcoxon signed-rank test). The Life Skills Programme was implemented over twelve sessions, lasting about one-and-a-half hours, held twice weekly over a period of six weeks. Using experiential learning within the groupwork method, the programme was subsequently implemented with Grade 7 learners at a traditional black primary school in Pretoria and their ages varied from approximately 12 to 16 years. Forty learners constituted the sample in the study and a non-probability sampling procedure was used. In the school context it is expected that the social worker will include all learners in the classroom (classroom intervention). The sample was divided in six smaller groups with 5 to 7 learners in each group. The study found that the Personal and Interpersonal Life Skills Programme had a statistically highly significant effect (all items = p value ¡Ü 0.01) on the personal and interpersonal life skills development of the Grade 7 learners in the senior phase of the General Education and Training Band in the particular primary school. It is recommended that this intervention programme be implemented and facilitated by a social worker who is part of the multidisciplinary education support personnel. Exploring a group of Limpopo Province's senior phase mathematics teacher's pedagogical content knowledge of algebra using content representationsBopape, Mamogobo Eunicca January 2016 (has links)
Thesis (M.Ed. (Mathematics)) ---University of Limpopo, 2016 / This research explored the pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) of algebra as held by a group of senior phase teachers in Limpopo Province, South Africa. Sixty-one teachers from different districts in the province participated in this study. This qualitative study used a case study design. Data was collected using a test and content representation (CoRe) matrix.
The results were analysed through analysis of narratives. The study revealed that most of the teachers could not identify the main concepts that are taught in algebra. It was discovered that some could not differentiate between algebra and arithmetic. The findings also point out that the teachers had inadequate knowledge of algebra subject matter. The participants were able to identify some of the concepts that learners were supposed to do in the next grades. The findings revealed that most of the participants did not know the importance of teaching algebra. It was revealed that most participants could not identify the learners‘ difficulties; they could not specify the procedures they followed when teaching the identified main concepts in algebra, or give reasons for using those procedures. Furthermore, they could not specify factors that influenced their teaching. However, they were able to indicate different methods they used to assess learners‘ understanding. It was concluded that these teachers had inadequate PCK of senior phase algebra. The study recommends development programmes for both subject matter knowledge and PCK for practising teachers.
Keywords: pedagogical content knowledge, content representations (CoRes), algebra, senior phase mathematics teachers.

The assessment of learning programmes for the senior phase at environmental education centres in MpumalangaMaila, Mago William 02 1900 (has links)
The researcher thinks that there is a need to assess learning programmes for the Senior Phase
learners at Environmental Education Centres (EEC' s) in Mpumalanga in order to ensure that
resources provided by the Department of Agriculture Conservation and Environment in
Mpumalanga(DACEM) are utilized for what they are intended. Thus the dissertation investigation
is about whether learning programmes for the Senior Phase learners in Mpumalanga are assessed
for their quality, namely, effectiveness and relevancy within the Outcomes-Based Education
(OBE) system.
Each directorate or section of the Mpumalangas' Department of Agriculture Conservation and
Environment is obliged to ensure that appropriate policy guidelines are put in place to assist
Environmental Officers (EO' s) to implement the Core Functions of the Environmental Education
(EE) Directorate. Sometimes EO's need assistance in implementing policy guidelines. In this
investigation EO' s were provided with an opportunity to translate policy into action by
participating in the workshops conducted by the researcher.
The participation of the EO' s meant that they had to learn how to develop learning programmes
that are strongly guided by the EE Directorate's policy guidelines and Core Functions. / Educational Studies / M. Ed. (Environmental Education)

Die ontwikkeling van 'n onderrigleerprogramraamwerk vir Afrikaans addisionele taal / Christine du ToitDu Toit, Christine January 2012 (has links)
Educationists, linguists and other stakeholders are concerned about the effectivity of the level of
teaching regarding Afrikaans Additional Language. Some of the teachers of Afrikaans Additional
Language are not qualified in the teaching of specifically a foreign language. There is a lot of
uncertainty concerning the difference between the teaching of a home language and additional
language teaching. In order to ensure learners improvement and achievement as well as future use of
Afrikaans Additional Language it is necessary that the teaching of additional languages, especially
Afrikaans must be given appropriate attention.
The purpose if this study was to determine the selection the teachers made regarding teaching and
learning approaches, methods and teaching materials, including the curriculum, textbooks and other
documents, as well as to establish the perceptions of the learners regarding these approaches,
methods and materials in the teaching of Afrikaans Additional Language in the Dr. Kenneth Kaunda
District through empirical research, and to undertake a literature study to establish a teaching-learning
program framework that can facilitate to the effective implementation of the National Curriculum and
Assessment Policy Statement in all the language skills of Afrikaans Additional Language.
An interpretive research paradigm was used as foundation for this study. A literature study was
undertaken to establish what such a framework should look like with specific attention to language
skills. Qualitative research was undertaken through using multiple case studies where teachers and
learners who were willing to take part were questioned and observed regarding the teaching of
Afrikaans Additional Language as well as the problems they experienced. Documents such as
teaching materials and the curriculum were analysed as well. The analyses had a two-pronged focus:
thematic analysis with the use of the computer software program, NVivo 8, where the data was
reduced and thereafter analysed manually by the researcher. The researcher then used a comparative
analysis to compare the different case studies (schools).
The results of this study showed that the implementation of the curriculum was problematic for
teachers, they were uncertain about the degree of difficulty of the teaching materials, and would rather
stick to textbooks. The results also indicated that the teachers who did not use the communicative
approach preferred to teach mainly through direct instruction. The communication in the classrooms
was mainly teacher-orientated and the learners got little chance to use the language in interactive
activities. The proposed teaching-learning programme framework for Afrikaans Additional Language should help
teachers with the planning of their teaching as well as the implementation of the curriculum that could
result in more effective Additional Language Teaching to learners. / Thesis (Ph.D. (Teaching and Learning))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2012

An investigation into the implementation of Computer-Assisted Education (CAE) in the underprivileged areas of the Eastern Cape : a case study of Butterworth High SchoolAlexander, Eapen 05 September 2005 (has links)
This study investigated the integration of computer-assisted education (CAE) at Butterworth High School. Before 1994, may areas of the Eastern Cape remained neglected as far as education was concerned. However, with the advent of democracy, the new government is giving high priority to education to both the formerly privileged and underprivileged areas. This study investigated the extent to Butterworth High School has integrated CAE into its school curricula and the problems if any, that are preventing this school from becoming a full-fledged CAE school with their possible solutions. To appraise the integration of computer-assisted education at Butterworth High School the Evolutionary Model developed by Miller (1997) was adopted. Recommendations for further integration were made. / Dissertation (MEd (Computer-Assisted Education))--University of Pretoria, 2006. / Curriculum Studies / unrestricted

Curriculum 2005 assessment policy and its implementation in grade 9 in the Limpopo ProvinceThomas, Solly 08 1900 (has links)
The study investigates the implementation of the Curriculum 2005 assessment policy guidelines in natural sciences in grade nine in five secondary schools selected by judgement sampling in Limpopo Province. Data were gathered by means of a literature study, examination of learner and educator portfolios and interviews with educators. Findings show that most participants were unable to carryout the continuous assessment (CASS) tasks as required. A discrepancy in the quality and quantity of assessment tasks among the schools emerged. All schools replaced the final common tasks for assessment (CTA) with internal examinations due to the late arrival of materials and the level of difficulty. Contributing factors were lack of a well-planned curriculum, proper resource materials, lack of coordination of efforts due to poor curriculum support and management and inadequate professional competence in the Outcomes-based methods of teaching, learning and assessment. Recommendations to address the above problems are made. / Educational Studies / M.Ed. (Education Management)

The training needs of life orientation educators in the Mabopane districtTlhabane, Enid Manyaku 08 1900 (has links)
Life Orientation is one the learning areas which was introduced by Curriculum 2005 in the General Education and Training band. Its inclusion in the Further Education and training curriculum from 2005 is indicative of its unsurpassed importance to learners. However, these changes have brought about challenges and uncertainty among educators.
A literature study was done to discuss the concepts of Life Orientation content, the role of educators, the skills Life Orientation educators should possess and adolescence. The different approaches in relation to the teaching of Life Orientation were also explained. A survey study, using a quantitative research design, was done to investigate educators' response on their knowledge of Life Orientation content, Life Orientation skills and adolescent development. The results of the study indicate that Life Orientation educators lack confidence in these three areas. Therefore, educators require training to equip them to cope with the challenges of the learning area, Life Orientation. / Educational Studies / M.Ed. (Specialisations in Guidance and Counselling)
