abstract: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) holds potential for significantly impacting the primary caregiver and family, as well as the child with ASD. In particular, sleep problems occur frequently among children with ASD, and their poor sleep may negatively affect that of their caregivers. Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and Family Quality of Life (FQoL) are salient indices of caregiver and family well-being. This pilot study explored associations between family caregiver sleep problems and caregiver sense of coherence (SOC) or coping on HRQoL and FQoL. Additionally, this study examined relationships between child sleep and behavior problems on caregiver sleep and well-being. Sixty-two family caregivers of children with ASD (M =7.61, range: 6-11 years old) participated in this survey study. Participants provided demographic information and completed measures of HRQoL, FQoL, caregiver sleep, SOC, parental stress, child sleep, and child behavior. Caregivers with longer sleep duration reported better mental health and better FQol. Caregivers who reported insomnia symptoms, non-restorative sleep, and insufficient sleep were more likely to report poorer mental health than caregivers who did not report these sleep disorder symptoms. A stronger caregiver SOC was associated with lower caregiver stress, better mental health, and better FQoL. Significant relationships were found between shorter caregiver sleep duration or sleep disorder symptoms (i.e., difficulty staying asleep, early morning awakening, insufficient sleep) and greater child sleep problems. Moreover, short sleep duration or insufficient sleep among caregivers was significantly associated with greater parenting stress. Notably, biological parents with Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) had children with more restless sleep and higher rates of some behavior problems. There are a number of potential connections between sleep problems of children with ASD and sleep problems of their caregivers that are likely rooted in genetic, environmental, socio-economic, and behavioral factors. Interventions for sleep problems must address the context of the family and consider that sleep problems may be common to the caregiver and the child. abstract: Resettled refugees face numerous challenges including unsafe living conditions, loss of permanent shelter, adjustment to a new culture, loneliness, and separation from family, friends, and community. Of particular importance is the lack of a feeling of sense of community (SOC) within their new surroundings. SOC is not only worthwhile as an outcome of its own, but may also predict additional positive outcomes such as resilience and cultural adjustment. Literature has shown participation in sport can develop youth positively and build social skills, while studies in other regions of the world have also found a sport team setting to be a place for immigrants to experience SOC. In this study, I use a congruent mixed methods approach to both explore the experience of SOC for youth refugees in a soccer club, and examine the relation of SOC to resilience and cultural adjustment. Using photo-elicitation and semi-structured interviews with 11 youth participants, the qualitative portion of the study explored SOC among youth participants. Findings note the presence of SOC as matched to theoretical frameworks both specific to sport, and to a more general theory of SOC. Further data were collected through questionnaires distributed to club members. Results from the quantitative analysis indicate a significant positive relation between SOC and resilience, and SOC and perceived acculturation. This study’s contribution is to illustrate how refugee youth in a sport club in the United States experience SOC, and the impact of that SOC. This dissertation examines John Rawls’s doctrine of public reason in light of Thomas Reid’s Common Sense philosophy. Chapter 1 introduces the topics of public reason and common sense in order to suggest that Thomas Reid’s philosophy can provide a beneficial contribution to public policy debates. Chapter 2 examines key features of Rawls’s doctrine of public reason. Chapter 3 suggests that there are critical problems with Rawls’s doctrine of public reason. Chapter 4 examines key features of Thomas Reid’s common sense philosophy. Chapter 5 shows Reid’s common sense application in early American history as well as contemporary scholarship. It argues that common sense can provide insight into two test-cases, abortion and same-sex marriage. Chapter 6 concludes the dissertation, summarizing the arguments and providing suggestions for further research.

The investigation is aimed initially towards indispensable concepts of Aristotle’s cognitive theory. Among them, how substance is understood (form, matter and the composite of both), the definition of soul and animate being. Such notions, along with those of actuality and potentiality, are indispensable for understanding the relationship between body and soul, integrating hylomorphism. The treatment of the faculties of the soul begins with an examination of the nutritive faculty and its relationship with what is identified as life, followed by an approach towards the sense perception faculty, in which the activity consists in the reception in act of the external object’s form without matter. As a result of such activity, the one who perceives becomes in act equal to the form of that which is perceived. Besides performing an investigation pertaining to the senses, the notion of meta-perception is also approached. An analysis of the imagination as a movement that derives from the act of sense perception and that is fundamental to enable thinking is developed. Finally, to research the intellectual/thinking faculty, sense perception faculty is contrastively taken as a paradigm to attribute qualities to the faculty related to thinking. This faculty presents two functions: patient/passive intellect and active/productive intellect. From the balance of sense perception elaborated by imaginative operation, thinking, through its activity, recognizes its object: universal/ intelligible form. The result of thinking is designated as science. And the human being can only achieve such result through primarily apprehending sensitive forms related to subjects. / O problema do pensamento no De Anima diz respeito ao modo pelo qual o ser humano é capaz de conhecer em ato a natureza mediante a atividade da faculdade intelectiva/pensamento a partir de estímulos resultantes da atividade da faculdade sensoperceptiva. A investigação é voltada inicialmente para conceitos imprescindíveis para a teoria cognitiva de Aristóteles. Dentre eles, os modos de entender substância (forma, matéria e composto), a definição de alma e de ser animado. Tais noções, juntamente com as de ato e potência, são indispensáveis para a compreensão da relação entre corpo e alma, integrando o hilemorfismo. O tratamento das faculdades da alma tem início com o exame da faculdade nutritiva e com a sua relação com o que é identificado como vida. A seguir, é desenvolvida a abordagem da faculdade sensoperceptiva, cuja atividade consiste na recepção em ato da forma sensível do objeto externo sem a matéria. Como resultado de tal atividade, aquele que percebe torna-se em ato igual à forma do percebido. Além de ser feita a investigação acerca dos sentidos, aborda-se também a noção de meta-percepção. Desenvolve-se a análise da imaginação como movimento decorrente do ato da sensopercepção e que se mostra fundamental para a possibilidade do pensamento. Por fim, para a pesquisa da faculdade intelectiva/pensamento, a faculdade sensoperceptiva é tomada contrastivamente como paradigma para a atribuição de qualidades à faculdade relativa ao pensamento. Essa faculdade apresenta duas funções: pensamento paciente/passivo e pensamento ativo/produtivo. A partir do saldo da sensopercepção elaborado pela operação imaginativa, o pensamento, através de sua atividade, reconhece seu objeto: a forma inteligível/universal. O resultado do pensamento é designado como ciência. E o ser humano só chega a tal resultado através, primeiramente, da apreensão de formas sensíveis relativas a particulares.

Tem por objeto um estudo interno e estrutural do discurso manifestado, pela utilização do percurso gerativo de sentido, preconizado por Greimas, a fim de chegarmos ao discurso em sua manifestação, mesmo que de maneira leve, mas argumentativa. Apresenta também, como complementação de leitura, um breve histórico sócio-cultural sobre a etnia indígena que habita no Estado de Mato Grosso do Sul. / Abstract: The aim of this study, by using the semioptics theory of Algidas Julien Greimas, is to present a narrative-discursive reading of the poem "Genocíndio", written by Emmanuel Marinho, that shows, in our opinion, a debt between the non-Indian and Indian societies, as well as to show, scientifically, readings that show the degradation of Indian civilization and its culture together with the evolution of the society and modern culture. This study has as an object an internal and structural study of manifested speech, by using the approach that generates sense, taught by Greimas, with the objective of getting to the speech in its manifest, even if it is in a light manner, but argumentative one. This study also shows, as a complement for the reading, a brief social-cultural historic about the Indian civilization that lives in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. / Mestre

The  article  takes  as  a  point  of  departure  Brentano`s intentionalist  theory  and  its  problematic  distinction  between  intentional  and transcendent object, in order to present the way in which Twardowski reformulates these concepts by means of a differentiation between the content and the object of representations: on the one hand, the ‘content’ is the way of givenness of an object and fulfils an intermediary function between the act and its objective correlate; on the other hand, the ‘object’ is the necessary transcendent correlate of every representation, even of those, whose objects do not exist. In this context, it is the dimension of judgment that solves the problem of nonexistent objects. The final aim is to show how Twardowski presents an articulated theory that integrates an intentionalist theory of acts with a theory of objects and a philosophical semantics of sense (content). / Tomando como punto de partida la teoría intencionalista de Brentano y  su  problemática  distinción  entre  objeto  intencional  y  objeto  trascendente,  el artículo presenta el modo en que Twardowski reformula dichos conceptos a partir de la diferenciación entre contenido y objeto de las representaciones: por un lado, el ‘contenido’ es el modo de darse del objeto y cumple una función intermediaria entre el acto y su correlato objetivo; por otro lado, el ‘objeto’ es el correlato trascendente necesario de todas las representaciones, aún de aquéllas cuyo objeto no existe. En este contexto, es la dimensión del juicio la que permite resolver el problema  de  los  objetos  inexistentes.  La  intención  final  del  artículo  es  mostrar cómo Twardowski articula una teoría intencionalista del acto con una teoría del objeto y una semántica filosófica del sentido (contenido).

Ringsberg-Kristineberg is an area that contains a great cultural history dating back to the 18th century. In this area the city of Växjö is hoping to develop a “cultural and creative centre”. To achieve this they have used a planning method called cultural planning, this method uses for example a place’s culture and heritage as a guide in the search for what makes a certain place unique. The project in Ringsberg-Kristineberg made me interested in finding out which cultural heritages that were included and excluded in the future “cultural and creative centre”. I found three documents that contained the planning process of the project in Ringsberg-Kristineberg which I used as a material for a quantitative content analysis and qualitative textual analysis. The aim in this study is to examine which cultural heritage has been included and excluded in the accompanying documentation of the cultural planning-process in Ringsberg-Kristineberg. This was done by answering the following questions: (1) What does the inclusion / exclusion of cultural heritage look like in the accompanying documentation of the cultural planning method? (2) Seen from a timeline perspective; does it differ what has been included / excluded if one compares the accompanying documentation?The result shows that the first and the third of three documents show the exact same result regarding what has been included and excluded. The second document differs, it includes less heritages compared to the other two documents. Some of the included heritages are cultivation and planting, the brewery industry, the old prison and the old school town.

Este trabalho busca, através da noção de acontecimento, ressonâncias entre o pensamento de dois grandes filósofos do século XX: Gilles Deleuze e Michel Foucault. A hipótese lançada é a de que haveria, não obstante as distintas perspectivas, uma forte cumplicidade no trabalho de ambos, a qual poderia ser evidenciada, em cada um deles, em dois momentos importantes: em Deleuze, na Lógica do sentido (1969), quando o filósofo busca no estoicismo antigo a noção de acontecimento como categoria filosófica; em Foucault, em A ordem do discurso (1970), quando o mesmo anuncia que a noção de acontecimento tal como definida por Deleuze passará a ter grande importância em suas pesquisas históricas. Os objetivos, então, serão: definir precisamente a noção de acontecimento, buscando mostrar de que modo ela está articulada com importantes questões da história da filosofia na Lógica do Sentido; procurar evidenciar como, a partir de tal noção, inicia-se um deslocamento no percurso de Foucault, quando este propõe uma nova maneira de tratar a noção de descontinuidade, bem como uma nova concepção das relações entre discurso e prática; finalmente, reunir elementos para se pensar, através das contribuições de Deleuze e de Foucault, o que poderia ser uma filosofia do acontecimento. / This work seeks, through the concept of event, resonance between the thinking of two great 20th century philosophers: Gilles Deleuze and Michel Foucault. The hypothesis proposed is that, despite their distinct perspectives, there is strong complicity in the work of both, which can be seen, for each, at two important times: for Deleuze, in The Logic of Sense (1969), when the philosopher explores ancient stoicism for the concept of event as a philosophical category; for Foucault, in The Order of Discourse (1970), when he claimed that the concept of event as defined by Deleuze would be of great importance in his historical research. The objectives, then, will be: to precisely define the concept of event, attempting to show how it is connected to important philosophical history issues in the Logic of Sense; to seek to demonstrate how, based on this concept, there is a change in Foucault\'s direction, when he proposes a new way of dealing with the concept of discontinuity, as well as a new conception of relations between discourse and practice; and finally, to bring together elements to consider, through the contributions of Deleuze and Foucault, what an event philosophy might be.

O presente estudo tem como propósito analisar, na obra freudiana, como a fantasia encontra-se na encruzilhada entre o que o ser humano possui de mais essencial e universal, e o que deste nos aparece de modo particularizado. Para demonstrar esta tese, buscamos expor, primeiramente, a concepção de fantasia e a sua relação com os termos interpretação (Deutung), sentido (Sinn) e jogo (Spiel). Em seguida, mostramos que a fantasia não é apenas um universo à parte, cuja existência está subtraída do exame de realidade, mas a condição de possibilidade da verdade e da efetividade do mundo. Na sequência do texto, traçamos uma analogia entre as criações fantásticas das crianças, dos enfermos e dos poetas, para em seguida mostrar como estas evidenciam a relação simbólica estabelecida entre o que há de comum e de particular nos homens. Em nosso último capítulo, analisamos a importância da fantasia na construção do saber científico e como este se revela como arte. / The present study has the purpose of analyzing, in Freud´s work, how fantasy is placed in an intersection between what the human being possess of most essential and universal, and in which it is shown in a particular way. To show this thesis we researched firstly to expose the conception of fantasy and its relation with concepts such as interpretation (Deutung), sense (Sinn) and play (Spiel). Then we show that fantasy is not only a separate universe, which existence relays on the exam of reality, but the condition of the possibility of truth and the effectiveness in the world. In the sequence, we traced an analogy between the fantastic creation of children, sick people and poets, and then demonstrate how those highlight the symbolic relation established between what there is in common and peculiar in people. In our last chapter, we analyzed the importance of fantasy in the building of scientific knowledge and how it is revealed as an art (Kunst).

O Brasil enfrenta uma aceleração do processo de globalização, que representa um grande desafio, principalmente para países em desenvolvimento. Este desafio requer não apenas uma adaptação das empresas brasileiras, mas também uma resposta política comprometedora. Para buscar posição competitiva na economia mundial é necessário que exista uma integração entre o investimento público, competitividade da indústria e bem-estar social. Nos países desenvolvidos, a política industrial, os bancos de desenvolvimento e os agentes públicos atuam de maneira sintonizada e canalizam seus esforços para setores estratégicos, como infra-estrutura, P&D e atividades inovadoras, buscando aumentar a produtividade e competitividade de suas indústrias. A partir desse contexto, o objetivo do presente trabalho é analisar o impacto da atuação do Banco Nacional de Desenvolvimento Econômico e Social (BNDES), no que diz respeito aos financiamentos de grande porte, no período de 2002 e 2003, enquanto agente de desenvolvimento, modernização e estimulador da competitividade da indústria brasileira. Compreende-se importância neste trabalho por permitir analisar a posição do BNDES no desenvolvimento e crescimento da indústria nacional, além de iniciar a construção de um processo de avaliação de sua atuação. Isso poderá contribuir no sentido de aprimorar operações em curso e futuras, em função das experiências passadas, além de permitir correção de rumos e garantir transparências às ações do Banco, no que diz respeito à sua contribuição com as políticas nacionais. / Brazil has been facing acceleration in the globalization process, which represents a huge challenge, mainly for developing countries. This challenge requires not only an adaptation in the brazilian companies, but also an involved political attitude. In order to find a competitive position in the worldwide economy, integration among the public investments, industry sense of competition, and social well-being is necessary. In developed countries, the industrial politics, the developing banks, and the public agents work synchronically and aim their efforts towards strategic sectors, like infrastructure, development and reseach, and new activities, trying to increase productivity and competition of their industries. Based on this context the objective of this paper is to analyze the impact of the acting of Banco Nacional de Desenvolvimento Econômico e Social (BNDES), concerning the large financing, in the years of 2002 and 2003, as a modernization and developing agent, and a stimulant of competition in the brazilian industry. This paper has importance because it starts an analysis of the position of BNDES in the development and increasing of the national industry, as well as the process of evaluation of its acting. This can contribute in the sense of improving ongoing and future operations, due to past experiences, as well as it allows correction in the directions, and guarantees transparency over the actions of BNDES, regarding its contribution for the national politics.
