Λιάγκου, Βασιλική 24 October 2008 (has links)
In this Phd thesis,, we try to use formal logic and threshold phenomena that asymptotically emerge with certainty in order to build new trust models and to evaluate the existing one. The departure point of our work is that dynamic, global computing systems are not amenable to a static viewpoint of the trust concept, no matter how this concept is formalized. We believe that trust should be a statistical, asymptotic concept to be studied in the limit as the system's components grow according to some growth rate. Thus, our main goal is to define trust as an emerging system property that ``appears'' or "disappears" when a set of properties hold, asymptotically with probability$ 0$ or $1$ correspondingly . Here we try to combine first and second order logic in order to analyze the trust measures of specific network models. Moreover we can use formal logic in order to determine whether generic reliability trust models provide a method for deriving trust between peers/entities as the network's components grow. Our approach can be used in a wide range of applications, such as monitoring the behavior of peers, providing a measure of trust between them, assessing the level of reliability of peers in a network. Wireless sensor networks are comprised of a vast number of ultra-small autonomous computing, communication and sensing devices, with restricted energy and computing capabilities, that co-operate to accomplish a large sensing task. Sensor networks can be very useful in practice. Such systems should at least guarantee the confidentiality and integrity of the information reported to the controlling authorities regarding the realization of environmental events. Therefore, key establishment is critical for the protection in wireless sensor networks and the prevention of adversaries from attacking the network. Finally in this dissertation we also propose three distributed group key establishment protocols suitable for such energy constrained networks. This dissertation is composed of two parts. Part I develops the theory of the first and second order logic of graphs - their definition, and the analysis of their properties that are expressible in the {\em first order language} of graphs. In part II we introduce some new distributed group key establishment protocols suitable for sensor networks. Several key establishment schemes are derived and their performance is demonstrated.

Estimation de la structure d’indépendance conditionnelle d’un réseau de capteurs : application à l'imagerie médicale / Estimation of conditional independence structure of a sensors network : application to biomedical imaging

Costard, Aude 10 November 2014 (has links)
This thesis is motivated by the study of sensors networks. The goal is to compare networks using their conditional independence structures. This structure illustrates the relations between two sensors according to the information recorded by the others sensors in the network. We made the hypothesis that the studied networks are multivariate Gaussian processes. Under this assumption, estimating the conditional independence structure of a process is equivalent to estimate its Gaussian graphical model.First, we propose a new method for Gaussian graphical model estimation : it uses a score proportional to the probability of a graph to represent the conditional independence structure of the studied process and it is initialized by Graphical lasso. To compare our method to existing ones, we developed a procedure to evaluate the performances of Gaussian graphical models estimation methods. One part of this procedure is an algorithm to simulated multivariate Gaussian processes with known conditional independence structure. Then, we conduct a classification over processes thanks to their conditional independence structure estimates. To do so, we introduce a new metric : the symmetrized Kullback-Leibler divergence over normalized cross-profiles of studied processes. We use this approach to find sets of brain regions that are relevant to study comatose patients from functional MRI data.

This project presents the development of a wireless system for public street lighting management. Through the developed system, it is possible to control the power of each high pressure sodium lamp of the streetlights in a particular region. Thus, at times when the public streets become less utilized, it is possible to reduce the power and brightness of the lamps and save energy. The proposed system uses the ZigBee protocol to perform wireless communication between the modules installed on the lampposts. This protocol is based on IEEE 802.15.4 protocol, developed especially for wireless sensors networks and focus on low power consumption and data transmission node to node. It is also possible to install sensors (luminosity, humidity, etc.) in the designed modules and transform each unit of public lighting in a region into a monitoring station. The results show that the system saves energy and it is possible to reduce the lamp power by 64%, without reducing the ballast's power factor below the value stipulated in the regulation (0.92). The developed modules give the operator the option to choose the lamp power between three distinct values: 100%, 80% and 50% of rated nominal power, and it is also possible to change these values according to the operator's needs and the installment place characteristics (traffic usage, security). The system was tested in laboratory and on field, on the lampposts at State University of Campinas, where it remained installed in the period between February 5th and April 1st of 2014. The lamp power was varied and measurements of illuminance and uniformity were performed on the street. It was possible to conclude that the system is robust and immune to electromagnetic interference from the energy distribution grid, and gives flexibility for adjustments of brightness and uniformity of the street lighting. The reach node to node of the network is, on average 260 m, which makes the protocol and developed circuit adequate for this application, since the distance between lampposts is typically 30 to 40 meters. Economic viability studies have been conducted and show that the system is feasible and present attractive rates of return that depend heavily on the rate of current energy price / Doutorado / Eletrônica, Microeletrônica e Optoeletrônica / Doutor em Engenharia Elétrica

Energy Sustainable Reinforcement Learning-based Adaptive Duty-Cycling in Wireless Sensor Networks-based Internet of Things Networks

Charef, Nadia January 2023 (has links)
The Internet of Things (IoT) is widely adopted across various fields due to its flexibility and low cost. Energy-harvesting Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are becoming a building block of many IoT applications and provide a perpetual source of energy to power energy-constrained IoT devices. However, the dynamic and stochastic nature of the available harvested energy drives the need for adaptive energy management solutions. Duty cycling is among the most prominent adaptive approaches that help consolidate the effort of energy management solutions at the routing and application layers to ensure energy sustainability and, hence, continuous network operation.  The IEEE 802.15.4 standard defines the physical layer and the Medium Access Control (MAC) sub-layer of low-data-rate wireless devices with limited energy consumption requirements. The MAC sub-layer’s functionalities include the scheduling of the duty cycle of individual devices. However, the scheduling of the duty cycle is left open to the industry. Various computational mechanisms are used to compute the duty cycle of IoT nodes to ensure optimal performance in energy sustainability and Quality of Service (QoS). Reinforcement Learning (RL) is the most employed mechanism in this context.  The literature depicts various RL-based solutions to adjust the duty cycle of IoT devices to adapt to changes in the IoT environment. However, these solutions are usually tailored to specific scenarios or focus mainly on one aspect of the problem, namely QoS performance or energy limitation. This work proposes a generic adaptive duty cycling solution and evaluates its performance under different energy generation and traffic conditions. Moreover, it emphasizes the energy sustainability aspect while taking the QoS performance into account.  While different approaches exist to achieve energy sustainability, Energy Neutral Operation (ENO)-based solutions provide the most prominent approach to ensure energy-sustainable performance. Nevertheless, these approaches do not necessarily guarantee optimal performance in QoS. This work adopts a Markov Decision Process (MDP) model from the literature that aims to minimize the distance from energy neutrality given the energy harvesting and ENO conditions. We introduce QoS penalties to the reward formulation to improve QoS performance.  We start by examining the performance in QoS against the benchmarking solution. Then, we analyze the performance using different energy harvesting and consumption profiles to further assess QoS performance and determine if energy sustainability is still maintained under different conditions. The results prove more efficient utilization of harvested energy when available in abundance. However, one limitation to our solution occurs when energy demand is high, or harvested energy is scarce. In such cases, we observe degradation in QoS due to IoT nodes adopting a low-duty cycle to avoid energy depletion. We further study the effect this limitation has on the solution's scalability. We also attempt to address this problem by assessing the performance using a routing solution that balances load distribution and, hence, energy demand across the network.

Étude et prototypage d'une nouvelle méthode d'accès aléatoire multi-canal multi-saut pour les réseaux locaux sans fil / Study and prototyping of a new multi-channel and multi-hop random MAC layer for WSN

Mahamat Habib, Senoussi Hissein 12 July 2017 (has links)
The emergence of the Internet of Thingsrevolutionizeswireless local area networks and inspiringnumerous applications. One of the main issues for wirelessLANsis the access and sharing of the wireless radio medium. Several single-channel MAC protocols have been proposed and addressthis issue withinteresting solutions. However, some major problemsrelated to the channelaccess (hiddennode, synchronization, propagation of RDV) for a multi-hop transmission context, persist and are still the subject of intensive studies by the scientificcommunity, especiallywhenitcomes to a distributedwirelesssensors networks over extended topologies. Someresearch has proposed multi-channel MAC protocols, oftenaddressingthe ideal case, where all nodes in the network are within range of eachother. The transmissions and receptions of the data frames aregenerallypreceded by controls frames for the establishment of Rendez-Vous (RDV) among the nodesconcerned. Wefindthat the RDVs do not guarantee the channelsreservation in a deterministicwaywithoutconflictamong the nodes in the network, and maymakeitdifficult the multi-hop transmissions. A complex solution wouldbe to propagatetheseRDVs to the neighbors of the receivernodebeyond 2 hops. Facedwiththiscomplexity of multi-hop RDV management thatmakesour contribution. It is important for us to propose arandom multi-channelaccessmethodwithout RDV, in multi-hop topology. Our solution isimplemented on a real testbed made of multi-channel single-interface “WiNo” nodes, of whichweevaluate the performance that are compared to the single-channel case. An analytical model related to the multi-channelcontextwithout RDV wasalsodeveloped, and compared to the results of ourtestbed.

Une infrastructure flexible de collecte et de traitement de données d’un réseau de capteurs urbain mutualisé / A flexible gateway receiver architecture for the urban sensor networks

Vallérian, Mathieu 15 June 2016 (has links)
In this thesis, a receiver architecture for a gateway in a urban sensors network was designed. To embed the multiple protocols coexisting in this environment, the best approach seems to use a reconfigurable architecture, following the scheme of the Software-Defined Radio (SDR). All the received signals should be digitized at once by the Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) in order to sustain the reconfigurability of the architecture: then all the signal processing will be able to be digitally performed. The main complication comes from the heterogeneity of the propagation conditions: from the urban environment and from the diversity of the covered applications, the signals can be received on the gateway with widely varying powers. Then the gateway must be able to deal with the high dynamic range of these signals. This constraint applies strongly on the ADC whose resolution usually depends on the reachable digitized frequency band. A first study is led to evaluate the required ADC resolution to cope with the dynamic range. For this the dynamic range of the signals is first evaluated, then the required resolution to digitize the signals is found theoretically and with simulations. For a 100~dB power ratio between strong and weak signals, we showed that the ADC resolution needed 21 bits which is far too high to be reached with existing ADCs. Two different approaches are explored to reduce analogically the signals' dynamic range. The first one uses the companding technique, this technique being commonly used in analog dynamic range reduction in practice (\emph{e.g.} in audio signals acquisition), its relevance in multiple signal digitization is studied. Three existing compression laws are explored and two implementations are proposed for the most efficient of them. The feasibility of these implementations is also discussed. In the second approach we propose to use a two-antennas receiver architecture to decrease the dynamic range. In this architecture two digitization paths are employed: the first one digitizes only the strongest signal on the band. Using the information we get on this signal we reconfigure the second branch of the architecture in order to attenuate the strong signal. The dynamic range being reduced, the signals can be digitized with an ADC with a lower resolution. We show in this work that the ADC resolution can de decreased from 21 to 16 bits using this receiver architecture. Finally, the promising two-antennas architecture is tested in experimentation to demonstrate its efficiency with dynamic signals (\emph{i.e.} with appearing and disappearing signals).
