The meaning and importance of service for health professionals

Raleigh, Susan Unknown Date (has links)
The primary purpose of this study was to explore and identify the meaning and importance of service for health professionals. Those who participated in this study are all registered nurses who each have between 10 and 40 years of clinical nursing and nurse lecturing experience. The participants each wrote two stories, one about the meaning of service and the other about the importance of service. Definitions of service generally suggest organised labour involving an act of help or assistance. Our intent was to understand what constituted service for each of us in the healthcare - and specifically the nursing practice/education - context.A secondary purpose of this qualitative research was guided by participatory and critical theory paradigms. Seven participants and I (as the initiating researcher) formed a co-operative inquiry group to undertake the research using a collaborative process. Within this method the leader and the group became co-participants and co-researchers. Nurses and women are identified as marginalised people and by honouring the principles of co-operative inquiry we were empowered through this process. While the initial data was analysed thematically by the lead researcher, the original 19 sub-themes were refined by participants into five themes. The findings of the participants are consistent with overseas studies on emotional labour and sentimental work. The five themes that emerged as the meaning of service are helping, giving, elements of service, acts of doing, and pride in work. Helping was defined as an attitude and an action, which often results in a spiritual connection. Giving involves stretching yourself, and altruistic behaviour that also incorporated a spiritual component. Five sub-themes merged to form the third theme elements of service; working with people, being a public servant, being a servant, need and duty. The complexity and hidden aspect of service work was expressed in acts of doing where being professional was paramount. The final theme, pride in work, acknowledged childhood conditioning and a sense of contributing to the greater good through our unique work as nurses. This study affirmed that service has much importance to those involved and deepened our understanding of the blend of meanings service expresses.

From 1952 to 1953, Deocélia Vianna presented a radio show entitled Madame Danjou, which consisted in an advice column (also called ‘agony aunt’), and most of the listeners were women. For them, the habit of writing letters and diaries represented the possibility of expression. In our analysis of the demands addressed to Madame Danjou program, we seek to identify elements that could qualify both the letter writers and the broadcaster as part of a specific context, without, however, ignore its peculiarities. To this end, we consider the radio program as a space for reflection and sociability for those social workers, due to the flow of questions and answers that characterizes it. But first, we must not lose sight of the particular path of Deocélia Vianna, as well as the specificity of this type of program to understand the other end of the dialogue that is established: the advice. We also privileged the normative dimension, since these boards were directed to the remediation of conflicts privately, through the appropriateness of certain behaviors.

Research into sentimental analysis to predict exchange-traded fund trend

Huang, Hung-Ming Unknown Date (has links)
Rapid and stable economic growth in Asia motivated the asset scale of ETF in the globe growing rapidly in the recent years. Yuanta Taiwan Top 50 ETF gains the investors’ favor because of the advantages of large market scale. Past research have shown that the text documents on the internet, e.g. news and tweets, would make great effect on public emotion, and the public emotion could even affect the stock price. For investors, it is important to know how to analyze the potential emotion in text documents to predict the stock trend. However, the traditional way to analyze text documents by human cannot afford the large volume of financial text documents on the internet. In past sentimental analysis research, supervised method is proven as a method with high accuracy, but there are limits about predicting unknown future trend. This research combined supervised and unsupervised methods to deal with these large financial text documents. By using unsupervised method to find out the topic of documents, and then calculate the sentimental index of each documents to differentiate the sentiment polarity. Afterwards, using supervised method to build a prediction model with the sentimental index. According to the result, we found that the performance of LDA model is better than the TF-IDF with K-means model. Moreover, the prediction model which include the sentiment index has higher accuracy than the one include the technical indicators only.

The nostalgia for the civilization. The representations of the Ancien Régime in the sensitive novels, the historical novels, the fictionalized lives and the edifying lives (1789-1847)]

Schiariti, Francesco 19 June 2015 (has links)
The French Revolution creates a History’s acceleration and the concept of the Ancien Regime, on institutional and impressionist levels. After 1789, numerous novelists, historical or sentimental (many times both), born during Louis XV and Louis XVI reigns, express nostalgia for Ancien Régime’s civilization. They write about the highlights of the Bourbon’s monarchy, the “douceur de vivre” of the Marie-Antoinette era or the medieval courtesy (in troubadour pieces of work about ladies and knights). This doctoral thesis explores the purposes and methods of the representation of prerevolutionary periods in novels. The large corpus (1789-1847) include famous male (Chateaubriand, Florian, Sade) and female (Mme Cottin, Mme de Genlis, Mme Gay, Mme de Souza) authors and several “minores” – some of them still ignored by modern studies - (Mme de Bawr, Mme Brossin de Méré, Mme Candeille, Guesdon, l’abbé Proyart …)

Naiviteten som täckmantel : -Om manlighet i Erlend Loes Fvonk

Gustavsson, Robin January 2022 (has links)

Miscegenated Narration: The Effects of Interracialism in Women's Popular Sentimental Romances from the Civil War Years

Beeler, Connie 05 1900 (has links)
Critical work on popular American women's fiction still has not reckoned adequately with the themes of interracialism present in these novels and with interracialism's bearing on the sentimental. This thesis considers an often overlooked body of women's popular sentimental fiction, published from 1860-1865, which is interested in themes of interracial romance or reproduction, in order to provide a fuller picture of the impact that the intersection of interracialism and sentimentalism has had on American identity. By examining the literary strategy of "miscegenated narration," or the heteroglossic cacophony of narrative voices and ideological viewpoints that interracialism produces in a narrative, I argue that the hegemonic ideologies of the sentimental romance are both "deterritorialized" and "reterritorialized," a conflicted impulse that characterizes both nineteenth-century sentimental, interracial romances and the broader project of critiquing the dominant national narrative that these novels undertake.

A study on the trend of exchange traded funds by sentiment pattern analysis in Yuanta Taiwan Top 50 ETF

Lin, Yong-Xiang Unknown Date (has links)
The past research points out that the scale of ETF assets has been growing rapidly in recent years. Yuanta Taiwan Top 50 ETF is popular with investors because of the advantages of large market scale. Through the development of Big Data, the technology of Text Mining becomes mature. Thus, we analyze the price forecast model to raise the investors' rate of return. The research of Text Mining used to take the document term to analyze, but it often results in the problem with synonym and polysemy. Therefore, this research proposes a supervised learning method of sentiment pattern analysis. In addition, in order to solve the problem with training data about the supervised learning method, we mix the unsupervised learning method to carry out the subject grouping and sentimental tendency. In this study, we establish the news dataset and screen it as popular terms that are used to an unsupervised method of LDA model. The result points out that the number of news about company dropped significantly during the 2016 Taiwan president election because of the change of media sensation. Moreover, we create the sentiment dictionary that can determine the polarity of 10% neutral terms and the emotional tendency of 96% documents by mixing the NTUSD, HowNet knowledge Database and the self-expansion algorithm. Through the data visualization, the result shows that the curve of DIF-MACD is able to predict the long-term trend of 0050, while the sentiment index of the news makes a good showing in the short-term price volatility. Besides, the news sentiment index of the subjects that belong to general economy and company has about 1 to 2 day leading indicators. Eventually, we employ the Sentiment Pattern Taxonomy Model(PTM) in Chinese texts as supervised learning method and compare with VSM and SVM. The experiment result shows that PTM combined with Taiwan Weighted Stock Index is the best when its F1-Measure is up to 85%. Apart from this, we find that the sentiment index of the news in non-trading time can influence the price volatility of 0050.

A grammar of sentiment : thinking about sentimental jewellery : towards making new art about love and loss

Parmar, Bharti January 2009 (has links)
This practice-led research project explores English and French sentimental jewellery of the Victorian period. ‘Sentimental jewellery’ or ‘message jewellery’ denotes jewellery created to function as a tangible expression of feeling between donor and recipient, mediated through complex narratives relating to its exchange. These artefacts codify emotion through use of complex visual languages, employing the symbolic and coded use of gems, human hair, emblems, words and wordplay. The research has expanded to encompass memorial garments known as ‘widows weeds’. The aims of the research have been threefold: firstly, to add to understanding and interpretation of aspects of Victorian sentimental jewellery and associated craft practices; secondly, to explore the metaphors and narratives inherent within them; thirdly, to test the visual and technical possibilities of knowledge thus gained to address human feeling through art. Outcomes take the form of a body of new artwork and a written thesis, which are designed to be mutually informing. Together, they articulate my response to the project’s central question: can consideration of the ‘grammar of sentiment’ at work in Victorian sentimental jewellery yield new possibilities, through fine art practice, for communicating love and loss in the 21st century? The four artworks that are a main output of the research take the forms of: REGARD:LOVEME, an artist’s book exploring gem codes and wordplay; Plocacosmos, a set of hairworking trials; The Cyanotypes, which reflect upon the materiality and aesthetic of the amatory locket; and Widows Weeds, a large format photographic installation, which considers the materiality and lineage of mourning cloth. Collectively, they explore the typology of the sentimental artefact through development of text/image vocabularies that are conceived as providing a ‘grammar of sentiment’ through which to articulate aspects of human feeling. It is this exploration that constitutes my main contribution to knowledge.

Converging Objects of the Universe

Hoffman, Everett 01 January 2018 (has links)
Reconfigured found objects shape scenes of everyday life, questioning the structural histories that go into defining an identity. Engaging in a multidisciplinary approach of making, my work reimagines the function of ornamentation and its relationship to the body. I approach new materials and found objects with the eye of a jeweler, highlighting and exploiting the subtle, and often invisible, links between material histories and their connection to identity. Material debris patinated with age like skillets, baseballs, and furniture are used to penetrate normative structures around identity, gender, and sexual desire. Using adornment as a support in my installations I propose a new lens for viewing function through the use of ornamentation. In doing so I highlight the bodie’s impact on objects, and call into to question the role these objects play in shaping our understanding of identity—An identity that is never singular, constantly evolving, and more often than not contradictory and confusing.

Sentimental Literature as Social Criticism:Susan Warner, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and Emma D.E.N. Southworth as Active Agents, Negotiating Change in the United States in the Mid-Nineteenth Century

Cann, Jenichka Sarah Elizabeth January 2013 (has links)
Detractors of sentimental literature argue that such novels are unoriginal and concerned primarily with emotions. Feminist scholars redeem the reputation of sentimental literature to an extent. At present, a multitude of approaches present sentimental authors as active agents, engaging with public issues. Building upon the scholarship of prominent feminist historians and literary critics, this thesis provides direct evidence that three female authors embrace the responsibilities of being a social critic. The Wide, Wide World (1850) by Susan Warner, Uncle Tom’s Cabin (1851) by Harriet Beecher Stowe, and The Hidden Hand (1859) by Emma D.E.N. Southworth provide unique commentaries on the separation of the private and public spheres, market revolution, and religion. Decisive differences between the authors’ opinions reveal a high degree of engagement with the public issues.
