Spectacular Native Performances: From the Wild West to the Tourist Site, Nineteenth Century to the Present

This dissertation engages with anthropological debates of the representation of Native peoples in performance through a series of comparative case studies that examine Native North American participation in Wild West shows. Using multi-sited ethnographic and ethnohistorical approaches, it investigates the experiences of some Native performers with the top Wild West shows historically (1885-1930), of three Mohawk families who performed in a variety of spectacles (early 1900s ), and of contemporary performers in Wild West show re-creations at EuroDisney (France) and Buffalo Bill Days (Sheridan, Wyoming, U.S.A). This research focuses on Native performers' perspectives and experiences in order to complicate the picture of exploitation and commercialization in this context. In this dissertation, rather than focusing solely on the production of stereotypes, I trace the extent and various forms of Native agency and expressions of identity through a series of encounters that occur in a Wild West show "contact zone." Drawing on the concept of transculturation, I argue that Native performers adopted and used contact zone encounters as a space to express their opinions or to maintain, express, and/or contest Native identity. I thus elucidate the various forms of agency that Native performers have wielded, whether expressive, communicative, performative, or agency of cultural projects. A "cultural projects" approach to agency considers Native performers own goals and social relationships in addition to the socio-political constraints and power relations that structure their lives. Native performers had their own cultural projects; they actively pursued the opportunities and benefits of working in Wild West shows. I argue that narratives of opportunity, success, and pride found in the employment encounter, in oral histories of Mohawk performers' experiences, and in interviews with contemporary performers, represent agency of cultural projects. Oral histories from Mohawk performers' descendants and their interpretations of the archival record were crucial for revealing and substantiating these alternative perspectives of Native experiences in Wild West shows and spectacles. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Style over Substance? A Content Analysis of the Gendered Style of Political Pundits on the "Big Five"

It is well known that males dominate politics, both in elected positions and in the media as political pundits (Melber, 2011). Is it the masculine style that is appealing to society? Do popular political pundits (male and female) emulate this masculine style in order to appeal to and persuade their audience? Through a content analysis of the rhetoric of six specified political pundits, it is hypothesized that both males and females are more likely to incorporate masculine styles of rhetoric, and those who display more masculine style traits will be more acceptable to the general audience leading to more airtime and appearances across networks. Through the analysis of the programs' 2013 transcripts, the communicative style of both male and female political pundits of the top five news programs from the big five networks will be studied: ABC's This Week with George Stephanopoulos, CBS's Face the Nation with Bob Schieffer, CNN's State of the Union with Candy Crowley, Fox News Sunday with Chris Wallace, and NBC's Meet the Press with Chuck Todd. / Master of Arts

This essay aims to investigate how gender is constructed, represented, and reproduced in the reality dating shows Hotell Romantik and Love Island Sverige. Additionally, it explores whether generational differences affect these representations. To investigate this, a critical discourse analysis and a comparative analysis of the programs are employed. Theories used include encoding/decoding theory, gender theory, feminist critical theory, and discourse analysis. Fairclough's three-dimensional framework was utilized to analyze two specific themes: the description of the ideal partner and the selection of a partner. The results indicate that while both programs adhere to traditional gender norms, they also challenge them to some extent. Notably, women in both programs take the initial step in partner selection, contrasting with traditional norms. The study also reveals a strong emphasis on physical attributes among participants, a focus present in both shows that cannot be solely explained by age differences. In the comparative analysis, we found both similarities and differences in the programs that could be related to the age of the participants. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the multifaceted nature of gender representation in reality dating shows, shedding light on their implications for societal perceptions and norms. Our findings reveal that reality dating shows play a crucial role in the construction, representation, and reproduction of gender, simultaneously reinforcing and challenging traditional gender norms.

With the trend of the globalization, the domestic suppliers participating in the trade shows are getting more and more. It seems that making the new marketing strategies is a promotion turning point. In this environment, we considered prevailing values such as the culture of spectacle and entertainment in the cultural flows regime, in which competitors throw themselves to the adventure of self-commodification at the capitalist level in which the invisibility is equal to death. For this study a hybrid research model was adopted, combining documentary and bibliographic research followed by interviews with the main players of the process. Being of qualitative nature, the research gathered records and experiences that help us to better reflect on the role of the media - and the competitions promoted by it - in the construction of the subject of postmodernity and in the projection of individual perspectives. For that, the corpus was submitted to a content analysis, where the interpretations revealed the consonance between gastronomic reality shows and the spirit of this era. / Sob o olhar e as raz?es dos competidores, este estudo buscou investigar e compreender a emerg?ncia dos realities gastron?micos na televis?o brasileira, em um cen?rio considerado de p?s-modernidade.
