Pois é, pra quê: Sidney Miller e Sérgio Ricardo entre a crise e a transformação da MPB (1967-1974) / Pois é, pra quê?, And then, what for? Sidney Miller and Sérgio Ricardo between crisis and transformation of the popular brazilian music (MPB) (1967-1974)

Concagh, Tiago Bosi 27 April 2017 (has links)
The dissertation here presented aims to analyze the works of the composers Sidney Miller and Sérgio Ricardo in the moment of crisis of Música Popular Brasileira (Brazilian Popular Music: MPB), around the year of 1968. Moreover, this dissertation will focus on the works of the composers in the 1960s and ponder on how both were considered, each in its own way, references of the new-born MPB. In addition this work will also analyze the transformation of MPB in the turning of the 1960s to the 1970s and the gradual process of overshadowing suffered by both composers mentioned. Parallel to such process, we will ponder about the restructure of the phonographic industry in Brazil, and also the arrival of counterculture in the country and the tightening and threatening of civil rights by the military dictatorship that occupied the government since 1964. We will bring these matters to enhance the analysis and for a better understanding of MPB in the context. In this way we will be looking at the works of Miller and Sérgio Ricardo regarding all the elements mentioned and how each composer faced the transformations of MPB at that period.

Sir Philip Sidney et les marges de la culture visuelle élisabéthaine / Philip Sidney and the margins of Elizabethan visual culture

Dulac, Anne-Valérie 11 December 2010 (has links)
The national legend surrounding Sir Philip Sidney [1554-1586] in the Elizabethan era has played a significant part in concealing many aspects of the courtier’s visual experience. The marble fixity of pictorial monuments erected in memory of England’s favourite Protestant « cultural icon » has mostly failed to register his features. This has been made apparent through the development of visual culture studies. Since emerging in the 1980’s, this interdisciplinary field has led to the laying bare of the brittle material of Elizabethan visual taxonomies, by encompassing within the ‘pictorial’ frame new kinds of images [imprese, limnings, wax medallions]. Yet, although opening up onto alternative visual modes, the latest forays into Sidneyan mimesis have remained firmly rooted in an ethnocentric approach of perspective. Conversely, far from reflecting an exotic, insular or archaic pictorial response to visual culture, Sidney’s ornaments -whether created by or dedicated to him- draw on encounters between ‘gentle’ and ‘barbarous’ visual histories, thus highlighting Tudor England’s ‘etiological uncertainty’. As a result, the many aspects of Ibn al-Haytham [Alhacen]’s Kitab al-mananazir [De Aspectibus] transpiring through Elizabethan optics will emerge as central to the building up and understanding of the anthropological dimension of Sidney’s mimesis.

The period chosen to be analyzed goes from 1980 up to 1998. In order to evaluate how this repercussion movement happened, we dealt with the historiographical production of the Brazilian Historian, Sidney Chalhoub, as well as his contribution as a Professor and the participation of Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Unicamp) as the disseminator and propagator institution of Thompson s historiography in the country. In addition to the history works, we used as resources for this study, the interviews with Chalhoub, the ementas of the programs of the disciplines taught in the History Course of Unicamp in the period of 1980-1998 that were filed in the Secretaria de Graduação da Unicamp. This dissertation has been inspired by the historiographical studies and it is present in the history of historiography.

Anatomy of a Rupture: Identity Maintenance in the 1844 Latter-day Saint Reform Sect

Call, Robert M. 01 May 2017 (has links)
Dissent riddled Mormonism almost from the day of its inception. Competing prophets and dissatisfied adherents challenged Joseph Smith’s leadership of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Perhaps the most serious of Smith’s challengers was the dissent of his counselor William Law. In 1844, Law confronted Smith over the implementation of the latter’s doctrinal innovations (particularly plural marriage) and Zion building activities in Nauvoo, Illinois. At the height of the dissent movement,anti-Mormon citizens in the region (some say inflamed by Law’s newspaper the Nauvoo Expositor)assassinated Smith. The assassination caused a religious rupture in Mormonism called the Succession Crisis. This thesis examines identity formation, maintenance, and evolution inLaw’s 1844 dissenting group. It argues that several factors, notably estrangement and social networks, were key in forming the group’s identity. As other scholars acknowledge, the group intended on a Mormon reformation. It also argues that a more accurate understanding of the dissent organization is one of an extralegal internal reform body rather than (as current scholarship puts forth) an external separatist church. The reform sect maintained their distinct identity during the closing months of 1844, but evolved into the 1845 Church of Christ that Sidney Rigdon helmed.Lastly, this thesis surveys the reformers’ navigation of a turbulent religious climate and offers some analysis on why those reformers most committed to Mormonism ultimately rested in the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

THE CHRIST-CENTERED HOMILETICS OF EDMUND CLOWNEY AND SIDNEY GREIDANUS IN CONTRAST WITH THE HUMAN AUTHOR- CENTERED HERMENEUTICS OF WALTER KAISER

Allen, Jason Keith 14 December 2011 (has links)
This dissertation examines the Christ-centered homiletics of Edmund Clowney and Sidney Greidanus in contrast with the human author-centered hermeneutics of Walter Kaiser. Chapter 1 frames the dissertation by presenting the consequence of preaching and the marks of redemptive-historical preaching. Chapter 2 presents Walter Kaiser's author-centered hermeneutic. Kaiser's hermeneutic is presented because it is used as a plumb line to assess if and how redemptive-historical preaching drifts from an author-centered hermeneutic. Chapter 3 introduces Edmund Clowney as one of the seminal thinkers in redemptive-historical preaching. It considers Clowney's Christ-centered biblical theology and how that informs his use of symbolism and typology to preach Christ. Chapter 4 juxtaposes Greidanus' seven ways of preaching Christ from the Old Testament alongside Kaiser's author-centered hermeneutic. Attention is also given to Greidanus' sermons from the Old Testament. Chapter 5 presents summary conclusions, documenting some of the frequent cleavages between Kaiser and redemptive-historical preaching. It concludes with ways to implement the dissertation findings for preaching the Old Testament.

Monitoring environmental impacts of recreational boat anchoring on eelgrass (Zostera marina L.) and benthic invertebrates in the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve of Canada

Leatherbarrow, Kate Elizabeth January 2006 (has links)
The goal of this study was to characterize the ecology and recreational boating activity at two popular anchoring sites located in the waters of the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve of Canada (Sidney Spit and Tumbo Island). The three components of the study were to characterize the distribution of eelgrass (Zostera marina L.). build an inventory of anchoring/mooring activity, and characterize the benthic infauna at each site. These observations were used to evaluate the impact of anchoring on the eelgrass and invertebrate communities. No visible loss of eelgrass was documented, but the results at one of the two sites support the hypothesis that benthic communities in high anchoring intensity areas are in poorer health than those in low anchoring intensity or mooring areas, a characteristic of communities residing in disturbed and fragmented eelgrass beds. Recommendations for site management and long-term monitoring are proposed based on these results.
