I den Tysta Kunskapens Stjärnljus : Eller hur gör man när månen går i moln?

Olsson, Patrik January 2015 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to highlight how tacit and silenced knowledge appear in various contexts in the nuclear power industry.  Attention is paid primarily to the dilemma that the instructor is faced in the teaching of courses and programs of theoretical and practical nature. Organization and leadership are considered to be important parameters in the education context as well.   The method used is called “the dialogue seminar method”. The empirical material has its foundation in the examples that originates from the dialogue seminar sessions in the masters programme, as well as from previous dialogue seminar series at KSU. From a linguistic perspective, some parts of the text have gone the whole hog out in order to create a greater depth in what is written. Some call it poetry.   The thesis considers that tacit knowledge takes a long time to achieve, but it can be lost quickly.  It also describes various dilemmas associated with knowledge and learning, from both the instructor and the student's perspective. The thesis demonstrates the importance of the three knowledges, namely propositional, procedural and personal knowledge. These three types of knowledges can not be separated. For example, if procedural knowledge is reduced to a minimum, it will affect the other two as well.   Since the aim is to highlight training in the nuclear power industry, the primary goal has not been to achieve any specific results. But what emerges is the importance of an organization or leadership which does not restrict the individual, but affirms thirst for knowledge and desire to do good work. Furthermore, it is needed to create opportunities for “on the job training” and in the continuation of self-development. The thesis also shows the importance of welcoming new employees in a good way as well as how knowledge from a colleague who will retire or quit is conveyed to another employee.   In the nuclear power industry, "operational excellence" refers as something to strive for. But what it means or how it affects instructor’s practice is not defined yet. Excellence can be seen as something that comes from within oneself and cannot come from outside and in.

An A/r/tographical Inquiry of a Silenced First Nation Ancestry, Hauntology, G(hosts) and Art(works): An Exhibition Catalogue

Cloutier, Geneviève January 2014 (has links)
As a hauntological artist, I deconstruct my silenced First Nation Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) ancestry as I look towards the intergenerational narratives of my grandmother, mother, and I. As I employ the methodology of a/r/tography, the intersection of autobiography and art-making, I utilize diverse art forms to find that g(hosts) reside amongst spaces of liminality. Supported by the methodology of a/r/tography, as I draw on works which blur the boundary between past and present, self and other, I deconstruct the silencing of my First Nation lineage by creating three art(works). These art(works) are placed within an exhibition catalogue and inquire into 1) the specters that loom between the evocative objects of our narratives, 2) how script-writing and the script’s performance can reveal g(hosts) in spaces of liminality, and 3) how sculptures facilitate spectral movement. Each individual art(work) plays a role in breaking the silence. A(wake), specters arise.

This dissertation approachcs gender issues that discuss in the play Antony and Cleopatra, produced by William Shakespeare (1606), through the translation of the scholar and drama critic Barbara Heliodora (2001). This study focused on analyze the composition of the female character in Shakespeare: Cleopatra, at time silenced, at others extremely sexualized. It is intended to emphasize this silencing process experienced by the queen, because it is believe that silence does not mean the absense of speaking (Kuhner, 1998), based on this aspect to understand what is the space reserved for the queen. The choice of this theme is justified through the reflections according in which in the literature the female character was for a long time portrayed by male authors and in a patriarchal society, factors that collaborated to the recurrent depiction of female characters as subjugated and put in a secondary role in comparison to the male characters. In this specific play, it is observed that although most of the Scenes take place in Egypt, Cleopatra is presented as a co-protagonist (HELIODORA, 2001) in her own territory. Focused on studies presents in the feminist criticism based mainly on feminist reading, of this dissertation is to understand the Shakespearean Cleopatra, sexualized and silenced, reflecting on the role of women in Ancient Egypt and the Renaissance. Theoretical perspections include made use of Heliodora (2001), Branco and Brandão (1989), Culler (1997), Scott (1999), Butler (2016), Bloom (1998) and Bradley (2009) among other authors.

The Experience of Loss of Voice in Adolescent Girls: An Existential-Phenomenological Study

Cihonski, Deborah A 22 May 2003 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine the meaning of the Loss of Voice experience in adolescent girls using an existential-phenomenological interview approach. An open-ended interview was conducted and participants were asked to "Please think of a specific time when you had something important to say, but did not say it. In as much detail as possible, describe that experience." Each interview was tape-recorded, transcribed by the investigator, and then independently thematized (Jones, 1984) by the author and a doctoral colleague trained in Jones' (1984) analysis method. Interrater reliability of the themes reached 96% agreement for the overall sample. Individual transcription reliabilities ranged between 85-98%. Thematic analysis revealed six superordinate themes and four subthemes. The superordinate themes were Difficult Position, Feeling, Might Explode, Not Worth It, Who Am I?, and Nevermind. The subthemes So Much To Lose and Strong were part of superordinate theme Difficult Position. The subthemes Emotion and Physical were part of the superordinate theme Feeling. Analysis of these themes in their totality suggested a complex meaning structure of co-researchers Loss of Voice experiences. This research supports and expands the current literature on Loss of Voice by providing a more in-depth study of the meaning contained in a Loss of Voice experience. Directions for future research efforts, intervention, and prevention education are discussed.

Surveilled and Silenced : a Study about Acquiring and Maintaining Powerin Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale

Nyström, Fredrik January 2012 (has links)
In The Handmaid’s Tale, Atwood indirectly exposes frightening and undemocratic traits in societies of our time when she applies them to a fictive future in which these factors have caused horrible consequences. A group of men has formed a new state, “Gilead”, in which they ruthlessly control the population. This essay studies how this dictating power gains and, essentially, maintains power in the fictive society. The essay argues, and comes to the conclusion, that by surveilling the population and by restricting its means of communication the dictatorship is able to control the people and keep them docile.

Establishment and Regulation of Silenced Chromatin in Saccharomyces Cerevisiae

Lynch, Patrick John January 2009 (has links)
<p>Heterochromatin, or condensed chromatin, is a transcriptionally repressive form of chromatin that occurs in many eukaryotic organisms. At its natural locations, heterochromatin is thought to play important roles in genome organization as well as gene expression. Just as important is the restriction of this repressive form of chromatin to appropriate regions of the genome. In the budding yeast Saccaromyces cerevisiae, domains of condensed, transcriptionally silenced chromatin are found at telomeres and at the silent-mating type cassettes, HML and HMR. At these locations, a complex of Silent Information Regulator (SIR) proteins gets recruited to DNA through discrete silencer elements. Once recruited, the Sir protein complex then spreads along chromosomes in a step-wise manner. This process results in the silencing of gene expression. It is unclear whether silenced chromatin is established in the same manner at different genomic locations. Understanding how silenced chromatin is formed is important for determining how these chromatin structures are regulated.</p><p>To better understand how silenced chromatin is established in different genomic contexts, I used chromatin immuoprecipitation to follow the rate of silenced chromatin formation at different locations. The rates of Sir protein assembly were compared at two locations, telomere VI-R and HMR. I discovered that the silencers at these two locations were equally proficient at recruiting Sir proteins. However, the rate of Sir protein assembly onto nucleosomes was far more rapid at HMR than at the telomere VI-R. Furthermore, the rate of Sir protein assembly was more rapid on one side of the HMR-E silencer at HMR than the other. Moreover, insertion of the HMR-E silencer adjacent to the telomere VI-R significantly improved the rate of Sir protein assembly onto nucleosomes. Additionally, observations that the association of Sir protein occurs simultaneously across several kilobases at HMR and that silencing at HMR is insensitive to co-expression of wild-type and catalytically inactive Sir2 proteins suggest that HMR-E enables the assembly of silenced chromatin in a non-linear fashion. These results suggest that HMR-E functions to both recruit Sir proteins and promote their assembly across several kilobases.</p><p>In addition to the HMR-E silencer, HMR is also characterized by the presence of a second auxiliary HMR-I silencer and a tRNA gene that functions as a boundary element to restrict the spread of silenced chromatin. I used chromatin immunoprecipitation to determine how each of these regulatory elements contribute to the steady-state levels of Sir protein association with chromatin. Consistent with a role for HMR-E beyond recruitment, I discovered that the HMR-E silencer alone promoted higher levels of Sir proteins on nucleosomes compared to the telomere VI-R. The levels of Sir protein association with HMR were further elevated by the HMR-I silencer, even though this silencer does not recruit Sir proteins on its own and does not contribute to any of the known functions of silenced chromatin at HMR. Additionally, although the tRNA gene did block the spread Sir proteins, I discovered that the capacity for Sir proteins to spread beyond a few kilobases was severely limited even in the absence of the boundary.</p><p>The results of this thesis work provide new insights into the mechanisms of silenced chromatin establishment and regulation in budding yeast. I show here that the capacity of Sir proteins to assemble onto nucleosomes is inherently limited. Additionally, silencers vary in their ability to promote this assembly. I conclude that the silencer is a key factor in determining the relative size, efficiency, and location of silenced chromatin domains in the cell.</p> / Dissertation

Vozes silenciadas no mundo ficcional brasileiro: o papel do índio, do negro e do pobre / Silenced voices in the brazilian world: the role of the indian, the black and the poor

Annete Maria Lins Bonfatti 12 March 2009 (has links)
A análise da mudança de olhar sobre esses segmentos sociais, na obra de João Ubaldo Ribeiro, encerra o trabalho com a tentativa de identificar semelhanças e diferenças dentro da temática do silenciamento em algumas obras dos séculos XIX e XX / Silenced voices in the Brazilian ficcional world: the role of the indian, the black and the poor carries out a survey of the performance of these three social groups in some Brazilian literary works. This paper draws a parallel between these social extracts and the exiled, seeking to demonstrate the marginalization imposed on those who cannot achieve social power. The shifting of perspective towards these social segments, in the works of João Ubaldo Ribeiro, concludes this paper by trying to identify similarities and differences within the thematic of silencing in some literary works of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries

This dissertation brings notes and observations on the reports of travelers who visited Mato Grosso in the period 1808-1864, and were silenced in the documents of the Public Archives of the State of Mato Grosso. According to the survey covering, travel documents is becoming a traveler lives reborn from the lines drawn by ancient narrators memoir reconstructing life histories. In each line covered, a dream, a wish, a story and new facts and relevant to someone or something that unfolds in exciting readings in painstaking and thorough research events. The impressions left by these travelers about the places visited are always present in many ways. Clergymen, militaries, engineers, among others, were the offices of these men. Even being only men, silenced travelers, women also attended and completed the routine of Mato Grosso society. Between trips it was observed to be impossible the silence about such replete sources of political and social quarrels, passions, stories about diseases and natural wealth. Brother Angelo of Caramanico, Engineer Pedro Dias Paes Leme, Ensign Antonio João Ribeiro and Frei Mariano Bagnaia, although known regional history, were not addressed as travelers. Are also given the following rating: Lieutenant Francisco Bueno da Silva, Lieutenant Manoel Simoes Henriques, Sergeant John Manuel Henrique, Captain Antonio Joaquim Xavier del Valle, José Ribeiro do Nascimento, Hypólito Simas Bittencourt , Luiz Soares Viégas, Joaquim do Espírito Santo Barbosa, Major Jozé Constantino de Oliveira, Antonio Rodrigues Itunamas, Manoel Carneiro de Campos, Juan Mendes Salgado. Also a special emphasis was given to the situation of medicine that was being practiced at the time as: therapeutic employed, the processes of healing, types of medications, previous treatments, quarantine instructions, instruments and medicines used by apothecaries, pathological statistical maps, maps sick of hospitals and employed diets, taken from information provided by travelers and some doctors as Dr. Antonio Luis Patrício da Silva Manso (1830); Dr. Macário Pamphilo Nogueira (1855); Dr. Mendonça Rivani (1856); the 2nd surgeon José Cândido da Silva Murici (1859) ; the Deputy Surgeon - Major of the Army, Dr. José Antonio Murtinho (1856); the "Pharmacêutico " Doctor John Adolpho Josetti among others. The stated and "unsaid" in this Master's thesis was the conductor for the proposed restoration of Mato Grosso’s memory by travelers.

Pessoa, Francielly Alves 27 February 2015 (has links)
Submitted by Maike Costa (maiksebas@gmail.com) on 2016-06-17T13:06:54Z No. of bitstreams: 1 arquivo total.pdf: 1100397 bytes, checksum: d261bd1a508b226944d689ae505681c6 (MD5) / Made available in DSpace on 2016-06-17T13:06:54Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 arquivo total.pdf: 1100397 bytes, checksum: d261bd1a508b226944d689ae505681c6 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2015-02-27 / Our research focus two Brazilian novels – Fogo Morto, by José Lins do Rego, and São Bernardo, by Graciliano Ramos, published respectively in 1943 and 1934. We point out, on these two narratives, the female characters Amelia and Madalena, in order to analyze their behavior as married subjects inside a very traditional social system in the countryside of the Northeast of Brazil at that time. In order to read critically how these women are constructed by the authors and the narrators in these narratives, as well as the role they play in the social system they are inserted, where the feminine tend to be silenced or made invisible, we discuss concepts about public and private spheres, with a special interest in the way in which cultural and gender studies has been leading such spheres of social life. With the reading and selection of a theoretical framework which brings important contribution to our analysis of the literary texts, we take studies by Lauretis (1994) in respect to gender technologies, Perrot (2003) about the theory of silencing and gender, Okin (2007) to discuss about the relation between gender and politics, and to discuss resistance of the dominant models we take Bourdieu (2014) studies. We highlight the almost total separation observed between the world of women and men in the novels analyzed. Finally, we point out some ways through which both female characters succeed, even in a non-explicit way, in interfering in the social system they are inserted and in the way their love relationships develop through the union (not always a loving one) they establish with their husbands. Thus, we discuss the context of these two novels within a wider, historical and social context, in other words, considering how the relationships between men and woman were established in Brazilian society in the thirties and forties.
