Borges, Dulcina Tereza Bonati 25 March 2011 (has links)
This work aims at investigating, besides the problematic of television in Brazil and interactivity among Medias, the processes and practices of reception of a soap opera from the following mediations: everyday life and subjectivity, what allows us to question the representations of sexuality, and the use of subjectivity on its interfaces with gender construction. Such concepts have taken place on television, making possible the analysis of the role played by the consuming of those representations, mainly in the big urban centers. Our proposal is to question the attraction Media exerts on contemporary man/woman, as well as their relationship with everyday television drama. The cultural industry and gender issues are pointed out having the Cultural History as theoretical support. This way we have studied the works of Chartier, Foucault, Edgar Morin, Stuart Hall, Canclini, Martin-Barbero, Maria Immacolata Vassallo de Lopes, Silvia Helena Simões Borelli, Vera da Rocha Resende, Scott, Rolnik, Tereza de Lauretis and Butler. The concepts approached were representations, new cultural studies, production, reception, mediations, and gender.

Its main concern is to check if teachers identify themselves with the characters representation of teachers. Soap operas in Brazil are famous television drama programs watched by a great number of people and, most of the time; they portray ordinary models of identity. This enables viewers to project themselves into these models either being them real or fictional models of representation. Through questionnaires, teachers - from public schools in Goiânia - revealed what they think of these models of representation. These instruments of data collection gave access to a general historical view of the representation of teachers in Brazilian soap operas from 1951 to 2006. Based on the studies of Martín-Barbero (1998; 2001; 2003; 2004) and Orozco Gómez (1998) the results show that teachers professional identity interacts with the images portrayed in the soap operas which interferes with their interpretation and making-sense of the fictional image and their own real professional identity.

Rejecting the Page, Inciting Visuality: Staging 'Woyzeck' in a Mediatized Culture

Conway, Elisha January 2013 (has links)
The influence of new media on theatrical practice over the past fifty years has spurred a movement towards theatrical forms which are increasingly organized around the sensory elements of performance. This change is most noticeable in the visual approaches to theatre, and it has produced what I have labeled a theatre of visuality. This thesis argues that the tendencies for visualization found in visual media have extensively marked the performance strategies of contemporary theatre practice, resulting in a shift away from the logocentric dramatic text and towards theatre performance organized around the visual. Looking at four contemporary productions of Georg Buchner’s Woyzeck –Thomas Ostermeier’s Woyzeck (2005), Vesturport’s Woyzeck (2005), Robert Wilson’s Woyzeck (2000), and Josef Nadj’s Woyzeck ou l’Ébauche du Vertige (1994)– this thesis produces a preliminary typology of four distinct visualities/theatrical forms which make up the theatre of visuality: hyperrealism, synesthesia, superficiality, and visual narration. This thesis contributes to the conceptualization and understanding of postdramatic theatre by linking the theatre’s rejection of the text to the increased centrality of the visual in performance, and by tracing these shifts to the influence of visual media.

The role of South African Broadcasting Corporation television soap operas in sustaining African traditional culture : a case study of Muvhango

Maseeme, Tricia January 2021 (has links)
Thesis (M. A. (Media Studies)) -- University of Limpopo, 2021 / Culture gives identity to the people, that which should run from one generation to another. In this information age, media are expected to be carriers of culture to help sustain its transmission through generations. This case study explored the role of the South African public broadcaster in sustaining African traditional culture concerning SABC 2 soap opera named Muvhango. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews with a sample of 25 participants from Tshakhuma village in Vhembe District. The study hypothesised that there is a misrepresentation of reality in soap opera. However, the findings of the study prove that media representations about tradition are a true reflection of the culture impersonated. The results have shown that there is a good relationship between the media and culture, which the media as transmitters of culture are fulfilling. The findings of the study have proven sustainability of culture. However, thorough research is encouraged for content producers to have more accurate and truthful representation.
