Scaling in social entrepreneurship : partnerships, knowledge transfer, and business models / Scale-up et entrepreneuriat social : partenariat, transfert des innovations et modèles de gestion

Chowdhury, Imran 02 July 2012 (has links)
The purpose of this dissertation is to deepen the study of social entrepreneurship by examining how social entrepreneurs use partnerships and organize themselves to transfer knowledge. My research takes a first step towards building a theory of innovation transfer and scaling for social entrepreneurship. This study builds on three primary foundations. One is the literature on innovation transfer strategy, which seeks to develop a broad view of the various strategies used by firms to transfer innovations effectively. The second is the literature on social entrepreneurship, which highlights the value-creation focus of certain firms that emerge and operate where situations of simultaneous market and government failure exist. Third, I use the literature on institutions, in particular institutional logics, to explain how organizational processes impacted by multiple logics unfold. Using an inductive, multiple-case methodology, I illuminate the innovation transfer process as it relates to social entrepreneurs. My objective is threefold. First, I aim to understand how social entrepreneurs manage the innovation transfer process. Second, I wan to identify the crucial factors influencing innovation transfer between social entrepreneurs, distinguish these factors from those observed in more traditional settings, and examine their impact on the direction of the innovation transfer process. Third, and finally, I hope to offer possible alternative views to the discussion on “scaling” in the social sector, a debate which has, to date, focused on “scaling organizations” as the primary means to expand the scope and reach of innovations developed by social entrepreneurs.

Social entrepreneurship opportunities in China : a critical realist analysis

Hu, Xiaoti January 2016 (has links)
Social entrepreneurship (SE) has become a rapidly advancing domain of enquiry and holds a place in policy makers consideration around the globe. Opportunities have been regarded as critical in SE, but are often portrayed in abstract and unspecified ways. Research on this topic remains relatively scarce, theory building is not yet established and integrated, and the dearth of empirical studies further constrains theoretical development in SE. Researchers have thus called for more exploration and a comprehensive theoretical understanding of SE opportunities. The purpose of this study is to explore SE opportunities through empirical investigation and theoretical development. As an exploratory study, this study addresses two broad research questions: (1) What are SE opportunities? And (2) How do they emerge? To answer these questions, I draw on the broader entrepreneurship literature which provides two main alternative explanations: opportunity discovery (nexus theory) and opportunity creation (effectuation theory). While the discovery/creation debate is still ongoing, recent theoretical advancement has shown a possible path of forwarding entrepreneurial opportunity research, suggesting that research should incorporate structure and agency simultaneously in studying opportunities. Following this path, this study contributes to SE opportunity research by providing a comprehensive understanding of SE opportunities, it also helps address the discovery/creation debate in the context of SE. To make this contribution, this study first adopts critical realism as a research philosophy as well as methodology. Critical realism incorporates the effects of both structure and agency through its ontological assumptions of three domains of reality, while providing an explanatory framework to assess competing theories. Second, this study selects China as a context for empirical study. As a relation-oriented society, China provides a useful context for studying the causal relations between the social structure (guanxi) and SE opportunity. China s institutional context and fast growing social enterprise sector also provides a promising setting for exploratory research on SE opportunities. Based on critical realism, I used a three-step qualitative multi-case study to develop an explanatory framework in which guanxi and social capital theory provide theoretical explanations of the social structure and its causal powers, which lead to SE opportunity emergence in China. Data were collected from 45 interviews with Chinese social entrepreneurs, their employees and other key stakeholders in 36 organisations in Beijing, Hunan Province and Shanghai. My research findings show that SE opportunities develop in all of the three domains defined by critical realism. In the domain of empirical a world of human experience of social events a SE opportunity can be described as discovered, created, or as both discovered and created. In the domain of actual the social events under study a SE opportunity consists of three internal and necessary constituents: unjust social equilibrium (USE), social entrepreneurs beliefs (SEB), and social feasibility (SF). In the domain of real deeper structures, causal powers and mechanism that produce the social event the emergence of SE opportunities can be seen as the result of a resource acquisition and mobilisation mechanism whereby USE, SEB and SF are identified or formed through social entrepreneurs social capital embedded in guanxi. Building on these findings, this study concludes with a theoretical framework that offers a comprehensive explanation of SE opportunity emergence in China. This study is the first attempt to apply critical realism to the study of opportunities in the context of SE in China. It contributes to the SE and general entrepreneurship literature by developing a theoretical framework of SE opportunity emergence that provides an alternative explanation for the existence of discovery and creation opportunities, and by extending our theoretical understandings of some key concepts of SE. This research further provides an example of the use of qualitative methods to apply critical realism in SE and general entrepreneurship research, which contributes to the development of relatively rigorous research design and research methods in studying complex social events.

Mattos, Guilherme January 2017 (has links)
Social entrepreneurs are central figures in addressing societal problems in Brazil. Nevertheless, despite the spotlights being pointed on these individuals, little is known about their particularities. Their learning process, for instance, is a subject lacking academic research. Therefore, one way to analyze their learning process is through the Experiential Learning Theory (ELT) present by Kolb (1984), which says that learning is the process whereby knowledge is created through the transformation of experience. One of the ELT's sub-products is the learning styles concept, which suggests that personal traits work as indicators of how someone perceives, interacts and responds to learning environments. Alonso et al. (1997) proposed four different learning styles: pragmatist, theorist, activist and reflector. As a result, the authors created the survey Cuestionario Honey y Alonso sobre Estilos de Aprendizaje (CHAEA) to verify someone's learning style and to carry out analysis about their learning process. Thus, the present research aims to analyze Brazilian social entrepreneurs' learning process in the light of the Experiential Learning Theory, using, to that end, the CHAEA survey. Primarily, the 90 Brazilian social entrepreneurs studied in this research had their learning styles verified and their results analyzed through univariate and bivariate techniques. Thus, it was determined that the pragmatist style, the theorist style, the activist style and the reflector style represented, respectively, 36.7%, 31.1%, 24.4%, and 7.8% of the participant’s general preference. Secondly, particularities and tendencies regarding the Brazilian social entrepreneurs studied were discussed, and hypotheses were produced. This hypotheses offer a clear research path to anyone interested in developing new studies about the subject. It is indicated for future researches to work with larger samples and with other types of statistical analysis. Besides the discoveries regarding the participant's learning process and the hypotheses developed, this research also presented other outcome related to social entrepreneurship studies in Brazil: the establishment of the Brazilian social entrepreneur profile. It was found that these individuals are characterized, mostly, by recognizing themselves as males, by being young, by declaring themselves as white individuals, by possessing a high schooling level and by getting involved recently with social enterprises. The profile formed supports profiles described by other authors in their researches and brings a meaningful consolidation regarding the subject discussion. In general, this research contributed to the advance of researches related to social entrepreneurship and to experiential learning in Brazil. In a practical viewpoint, it was made possible for the Brazilian social entrepreneurs which were part of this research to verify their learning styles and, thus, understand better their own particularities regarding their learning processes. Lastly, the contribution to educational institutions needs to be addressed. Through the results of this research it will be possible for these establishments to improve their courses designed for social entrepreneurs.

Addressing Sustainability in an Entrepreneurship Ecosystem: A Case Study of a Social Incubator in Mexico

January 2014 (has links)
abstract: Over the past few decades, businesses globally have advanced in incorporating the principles of sustainability as they strive to align economic outcomes with growing and complex social and environmental demands and opportunities. This transition is conditioned by the maturity, scale, and geographical location of a business (among other factors), with particular challenges placed on small enterprises in middle- to low-income communities. Within this context, the overarching research question of this dissertation is why and how business incubation processes may foster sustainable enterprises at the middle and base of the socioeconomic pyramid (MoP/BoP). To explore this question, in this project I used as a case study the experience of a network of social business incubators operated by Tecnologico de Monterrey, a private, non-profit, multi-campus university system in Mexico. Centering on its campus in Guadalajara and in order to understand if and how MoP/BoP businesses address sustainability, I developed a current state assessment of incubator processes, analyzing during two semesters the activities of incubated entrepreneurs and their goals, motivations, and outcomes. The general expectation at the outset of the study was that Tec's social business incubation process, in both its design and implementation, focuses on the economic viability and outcomes of incubated projects and hence does not promote entrepreneur commitment to sustainability goals and practices. The general approach of the research project involved a qualitative, in-depth ethnographic assessment of participants. Data were collected by means of the following research tools: (a) archival and documentary review, (b) participant observation, (c) surveys of participants (entrepreneurs and advisors/mentors), and (d) semi-structured interviews of participants. The overall design of the research was inspired by the transitions management approach and by the intervention research method, while qualitative results were assessed under the grounded theory approach. Results of the research are reported under three general categories: (a) analysis of entrepreneur goals, motivations, and outcomes, (b) identification of social and environmental opportunities, and (c) review of the role of social networks and broader support structures. While results confirmed the general expectation of the study, it was possible to establish (based on the interaction with the entrepreneurs and other actors) that there is both interest and commitment to identify and explore opportunities in social and environmental issues. Thus, the dissertation concludes with a proposal for potential future interventions in this social incubator, exploring a new vision and strategies for a transition to a more sustainability-oriented approach. Finally, key recommendations define the most critical elements of an agenda for transition in the social incubation process at Campus Guadalajara and provide input for other efforts. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. Sustainability 2014

Negócios sociais e investimento de impacto: um estudo sobre as percepções dos atores do ecossistema / Social businesses and impact investing: a study about the perceptions of the actors from the ecosystem

Carlos Eduardo Alvares Gonçalves 20 September 2017 (has links)
Commonly, the creation of economic and financial value has been attributed to companies acting in the capitalist market relations while the creation of social value has been attributed to third sector organizations. This seeming duality is being questioned in the light of entrepreneurship, causing the emergence of the impact investing phenomenon as an alternative that allows capital to be allocated to initiatives and ventures, the so-called social businesses, which aim to create positive social impact together with financial returns. The rise of investors and entrepreneurs of social businesses has caused controversies and reflections about the impact evaluation, the rate of return for impact investments, and also the core concepts that support investment operations, such as social value and socio-environmental impact. In this scenario, this study aimed to analyze the perceptions of different groups of actors within the Brazilian social business and impact investing ecosystem related to these themes and their experiences in the sector - challenges, opportunities, and learnings. An exploratory research of qualitative approach has been designed, which research problem was a survey of opinions, perceptions and expectations of representatives of three groups of actors of this ecosystem: investors interested in social businesses; entrepreneurs and executives from social businesses; and representatives from intermediary organizations, such as accelerators and investment funds. Based on the construction of a theoretical framework and the analysis of secondary data on the studied phenomenon, a primary research has been conducted applying a script for semi-structured interview in an intentional sample of eighteen people. The analysis of the answers showed that there is a great diversity of understandings about the concept of social value and that some interviewees tend to use this term as a synonym for social impact. Most of the interviewees highlighted elements related to access to education, health services, and citizenship rights. But none of them referred to the solid waste management as a generator of social value. Perhaps because these are relatively recent ventures, it was not possible to identify the extent to which impact investors are contributing to the growth of social value creation to the final beneficiaries. However, all social businesses that received impact investments stated that investors are contributing to the development of their businesses. Regarding the rate of return on investment, the respondents\' opinions diverged, but most of them understood that, in the medium and long term, rates of return should follow average market rates. The pre-investment impact evaluation is still more approximate than based on social impact metrics, but all actors from the groups of investors and of social businesses which received investments stated that the generation of social value is monitored by investors after capital contribution. The main challenges are the access and volume of capital, the constraints of the Brazilian economic context, and the immaturity of the sector. However, all of them consider that the social business sector and impact investments have a promising future in Brazil, whether due to the need to solve the numerous social and environmental problems or due to the size of the market of potential beneficiaries of these initiatives. In this sense, this work hopes to contribute to the theoretical and practical advancement of the issues and dilemmas faced by the social entrepreneurship and the impact investment sector, as well as to foster the Brazilian Social Finance ecosystem.

Negócios sociais no Brasil: oportunidades e desafios para o setor habitacional / Social business in Brazil: opportunities and challanges for the housing sector

Fernando Amiky Assad 13 December 2012 (has links)
The housing issue is one of the most important themes in the present. The projections indicate that around the year 2030, 40% of the world\'s population will live in poor housing conditions and 25% won\'t have housing at all. Brazil has a gross housing deficit of 5546 thousand residences, with around 11 million habitations without adequate infrastructure. Even though most of this deficit is concentrated in the population with earnings of up to three minimum wages, the Brazilian housing policies have always privileged the production of houses to the richest stratas of society. The base of the societal pyramid has low access to the units newly produced and very little access to polices that allow the improvement of residences in precarious conditions, usually located in peripheral areas with precarious urban conditions. The present study intends to analyze the challenges and opportunities for structuring social businesses in Brazil´s housing area. Social businesses are businesses that have as their main objective to contribute to the resolution of some critical social problem, using market mechanisms. To meet the study objectives, we conducted an action research initiative with a group of residents of Favela Erundina, located in São Paulo´s southern district. Taking the issue the house´s improvement as the specific focus of analysis, it was found that the aspects of technical assistance, not orientated to collective demands, the availability of skilled labor, material management and access to credit are the critical factors for structuring a social business dedicated to that purpose in the community level.

Inovação social: uma proposta de escala para a sua mensuração / Social innovation: a scale proposal for its measurement

Edison Quirino D\'Amario 30 May 2018 (has links)
Como contribuição, esta tese amplia o entendimento sobre o empreendedorismo social, as inovações sociais que eles geram e, oferece aos pesquisadores, um instrumento de pesquisa validado / Innovation is a field of knowledge that has been widely discussed in the business literature. In this field, it can be understood as the creation of a new value and wealth for stakeholders. In this sense, the concept commonly designed for literature, discusses how it can create and capture new value for organizations and for customers through changes in one or more dimensions of the business system. These changes may occur in products, services or processes, among others. Although innovation has been more studied in the area of business, from the social impacts that they can promote, some scholars, using the same traditional innovation lens, began to investigate the innovations that had as purpose to achieve environmental goals. To this kind of innovation, it was added the term \"social\". As this area of knowledge is still incipient in the present literature, this study has the objective to deepen the knowledge about social innovation, the depth at which it occurs, the types found and its geographical occurrence. The fact that it is still a subject little studied, according to a systematic review of the literature, its understanding is still under construction. Therefore, to achieve this goal, it was necessary to develop a research instrument that was able to identify the depth, the types and geographical occurrence of social innovations generated by social entrepreneurships. We understand as social entrepreneurships, organizations for or non-profit that have as intentionality some social, environmental or socio-environmental purpose and the value creation. From the development of a scale to measure and map the social innovations generated by social enterprise, following all the necessary and essential criteria to the development of scales, with respect to its content validation, we applied it to 264 social entrepreneurships in in the 27 Confederate units of Brazil. For the psychometric validation of the research instrument, we did Exploratory and Confirmatory Factorial Analyses. The initial range, before the content and psychometric validation, had 53 items, and after the validations, it remained 23 items. These items measure the types of social innovation of product, organizational and marketing; the incremental, institutional, and disruptive depths and the geographical range. The results of the application of the scale indicates that the depth of social innovation that most stood out in the sample was disruptive. This finding indicates that these social entrepreneurships seek to identify systemic problems and develop transformational solutions to achieve their goals. Also incremental innovations and institutional were observed, however, with less intensity. With respect to the types of social innovations occurring in the sample, the social organizational innovations were the ones that stood out, followed by the social innovation of product and marketing. Process innovations did not reach levels of reliability that could participate in the analysis, and, for this reason, the variables to measure this kind of social innovation were excluded from the scale. Complementary analyses, including intersections of demographic data can be checked in the analysis of results. As a contribution, this thesis extends the understanding about social entrepreneurship, social innovations they generate and offers researchers, a validated instrument of research.

O movimento B Corp: significados, potencialidades e desafios / The Movement B Corp: meaning, Possibilities and callenges

Juliana Rodrigues 26 October 2016 (has links)
Businesses and enterprises as key elements in the capitalist development model are actually being questioned about their actions in the resolution of society\'s problems and regarding their traditional focus on financial performance. New organizational models seek to produce articulations capable of creating a bond between profit and socio-environmental interest. Many authors cite the B Corp Movement as one of the main examples of the concept of hybrid organizations. It then becomes a rich object of study to understand the alternatives for reviewing organizational practices. One of its main mottos is \"to redefine the success in business\". The Movement operates in three main areas: certification, law and impact investment. This descriptive-exploratory and qualitative study, based on an interpretative-constructivist paradigm, aims to better understand the identity of the B Corp Movement according to the emerging concept of hybrid organizations, following other trends and definitions that seek to treat the socioenvironmental role of business. To answer the research questions - If and how B Corps are a model of organizational hybridity -, this research involved a multi-method approach of information collection, codification and analysis in a combination of two investigation phases. The first phase - A Portrait of the B Corp Movement - looked to comprehend the meanings from their actors\' perspective. The fieldwork consisted of 12 interviews with main stakeholders in Brazil and the United States, such as the movement representatives, leaders of certified B Corps and prospect enterprises. The second phase - A Portrait of Certified Companies - enabled to profile the Brazilian certified business through secondary data analysis. The sources for the analyzed material were the websites, made available on the internet by them, and their profiles on the global and regional website of the B Corp Community. From the results of this research, the certification can be perceived as an evolution of social and environmental accountability mechanisms, by including steps of information evidences, auditing, legal commitment and seal/certification identification. The inclusion of the interests of stakeholders in legal documents is one of the key differentiators and symbolic aspect of the movement. However, it is still not possible to say that they represent a new organizational model or an ideal type of hybrid organization, but rather a path on this intention. The studied group of enterprises comprises a larger scope on organizational hybridity levels, placing more emphasis the way businesses are conducted, but not necessarily their core business, main-activities or social mission as a guide for business model. It can be noticed the heterogeneity of certified companies as one of the main characteristics of the movement and, at the same time, one of their biggest challenges to be distinguished. The ideological positioning and impact investment attraction are the main motivating factors for a company to certify. Earning the seal is perceived as a way to ensure legitimacy for a socioenvironmental differential. The low awareness of B Corp as a brand and the lack practical benefits are among the main weaknesses, compensated by being part of a shared values community and the potential for network and partnerships. By providing a panoramic and analytical overview of the movement, this study serves as a starting point for future researches related to the subject and for the development of the concept of hybrid organizations.

Empreendedorismo social e promoção do desenvolvimento local / Social entrepreneurship and local development promotion

Monica Bose 01 February 2013 (has links)
The phenomenon of social entrepreneurship has gained visibility and relevance in the scope of academic production, and especially of contemporary organizational practices, as it presents another alternative for fighting poverty and social exclusion, and promoting sustainable development. Through the observation of three cases in the Sao Paulo Metropolitan Area, this thesis has sought to identify if and how such social enterprises have caused significant changes in the social development of the territories in which they operate. Relying on the design and vectors of inequality proposed by Amartya Sen (2000) for social development, the empirical survey has sought to identify the results obtained by social enterprises in three initiatives in the metropolitan area of São Paulo. The study has adopted a qualitative methodology in a contextualist approach (PETTIGREW, 1989; FISCHER, 2002), which seeks to characterize the circumstance in which some of the projects undertaken by the enterprises analyzed are inserted. Such initiatives were studied as fields in which manifold agents interact and influence by mobilizing the different types of capital each of them hold, as proposed by Bourdieu (2007). The collected data were analyzed as Roche\'s methodological proposition (2002), based on the identification of changes perceived by the target population of the projects. The multiple-case study was used as a research method, as typology proposed by Yin (2010). Data were collected from documents, interviews and observations, and were categorized according to the technique of content analysis, as proposed by Bardin (1977). The results of the research have indicated signs of improvement in the quality of personal and family life of the actors who participated in the initiatives undertaken by the social enterprises. Changes that affect the location or territory as a whole, setting an increment in the development patterns, are not seen in all cases and are usually concentrated in one or the other dimension of social development, such as improvements in the sphere of material riches or social wellbeing. The results achieved by the social enterprises surveyed have contributed little, until the time of the survey, in strengthening social and political capital in the communities involved, as well as in leveraging the economic and social development of the territory in which they operate. However, one must also consider the impacts caused by the short lifetime of the initiatives studied and by the innovative character, typical of such actions, on the results attained.

O movimento do empreendedorismo social no Brasil sob a luz do prêmio empreendedor social / The social entrepreneurship movement in Brazil under the perspective of the social entrepreneur award

Cássio Aoqui 20 February 2017 (has links)
Given the need to improve the understanding of social entrepreneurship within the scope of organizational theories, based on the frontier of knowledge in this field and on awards, the objective of this study was to describe, historize and analyze the emergence, implementation and development of Social Entrepreneur Award and how the changes it has undergone over more than a decade of existence (2005-2015) mirror the very movement of Brazilian social entrepreneurship. For this, from a relativist-constructivist ontological perspective, a process research was conducted with an intrinsic case study, inspired by the Gioia method and the contextualist approach, based on the historical and longitudinal analysis of 6,688 records (secondary data) of the initiative, carried out in the country by Folha de S.Paulo and the Schwab Foundation. The analysis of the case shows that the object of study presents a relationship of mutuality with the movement of Brazilian social entrepreneurship, sometimes fomenting it, revealing new references in the field, promoting intersectoral networks and alliances and propagating its concepts to a wider public broad; sometimes mirroring it, undergoing transformations to adapt to the dynamic context in which it is inserted. In this sense, it is noted that the very concept of social entrepreneur evolves from the archetype of the hero leader to a still open reflection of his real capacity to cause a systemic social transformation, more than a decade after the launch of the Prize, vis-à-vis the new entrepreneurial generations, who reinforce principles such as horizontality and hybridity. The laureates themselves reflect the origins and development of this field, from grassroots social movements that were institutionalized as NGOs in the 1980s to technology startups in education and inclusion leveraged by impact investment. The analysis of this evolution denotes an intrinsic relation with the contextual references of the field of social entrepreneurship in Brazil and in the world - the zeitgeist -, among them the strong orientation towards the search for innovation, of sustainability - demonstrated by the professionalism of the management and income generation of social ventures - and of the social impact generated, in a way proven by performance measurements. Externally, two crises are a decisive factor in the trajectory of the Prize in Brazil: the economic instability during this period, with a further reflection on the journalism sector in the country, and the crises of public image and reputation of organizations that affect the socio-environmental field, mirrored in the political-institutional spectrum. Lastly, in the framework of the partnership between the promoters, the results of this research point to an alliance that strengthened in the first three years and that, little by little, was fragmented by critical incidents that evidence an alliance that has never really become strategic. By way of conclusion, it is noticeable that, even though the award has an affect on the social entrepreneurship movement, having consolidating itself as a reference in the selection and promotion of social-environmental leaders in the country, it mostly mirrors and seeks for adaptation - and survival - to its mutant context, deeply attached to the initiatives undertaken by the team that organizes it, without a clear strategic and long-term direction from the perspective of its two promoters.
