Amongst Kiwis and Swedes: Developing an intercultural competence with young learners through written telecollaboration

Ingelsson, Jennie, Linder, Anna January 2018 (has links)
This study investigates the intercultural development with young learners from Sweden and New Zealand, when using written telecollaboration as a tool. Telecollaboration; is a tool used for online collaboration, it provides for a possibility of connecting students from across the globe and can function as a supplement to traditional teaching. The exchange, took place over a couple of months, connecting two remote and quite unknown corners of the world, from the students’ perspective. Students shared cultural topics with their peers through the course of two emails each, as well as, creating an overall multimodal presentation of their school. The telecollaborative exchange was done in the quest to develop the students social and self-awareness regarding culture through authentic meetings. The data collected is in the form of mind-maps, multi-choice surveys and unstructured observations. Visible themes, found during the project, is unpacked and analysed in accordance with Byram’s (1997) theoretical model of ICC. These themes are also compared with findings of previous research on telecollaboration in educational settings. The results of the study revealed that a development of the young learners’ intercultural understanding was partially achieved. Furthermore, implications met, was the limitation of time as well as the range of technology available.

Nappar ditt företag på falskt bete? : En undersökning om hur små- och medelstora företag i Sverige skyddar sig mot phishing-mejl.

Hägg, Filip, Johansson, Filip January 2023 (has links)
The number of phishing emails has been constantly increasing in recent years, especially towards businesses and organizations. The purpose of this study is to investigate how small and medium-sized IT-mature enterprises (SMEs) in Sweden protect themselves against phishing emails, their biggest challenges regarding this, as well as how they perceive that their exposure to phishing emails has changed in recent years. Through this study, gaps in how SMEs protect themselves have been identified and as a result, a list of security measures that address the SMEs' challenges have been produced. Data was gathered by conducting a literature study in conjunction with semistructured interviews with seven respondents, all whom where from individual companies and had some responsibility for the information security work. The results show that all SMEs rely on information sharing as their primary method of protection against phishing emails, while only a small proportion invest in employee education. In addition, the SMEs use only basic technical security solutions and none of them have any dedicated policy for managing phishing. Regarding challenges, the results mainly show difficulties in maintaining awareness among employees and identifying which technical security solutions that should be adapted. Furthermore, most of the respondents perceive that the exposure to phishing emails has increased and believe it will continue doing so in the future. With the collected data from the interviews and the literature study, a list of recommended security measures has compiled which addresses the challenges highlighted by the SMEs.

Designing and evaluating a board game prototype as a storytelling method to raise awareness about refugees’ language barriers

Terzioglu, Mustafa January 2022 (has links)
The thesis takes a research through design approach to identify the potential of a storytelling board game concept to raise awareness about societal challenges. Knowledge of existing serious game examples illustrating the social issues, designing a board game prototype iteratively, and evaluating with co-creation sessions helped to comprehend the potential of the subject. The thesis, with an iterative process, focuses on one case study, designing a board game called “Can you survive?”. The game uses storytelling to relay stories about refugees’ hardships caused by language and communication barriers to its players. The research process was supported by several co-creation workshops, including game playing and focus group sessions, to advance the board game in terms of making it more impactful and evolving the rules while gathering insights about the game and the players’ thoughts about the game topic. As a result of the research process, the final version of the board game was designed. The study demonstrates that a board game using narrative elements can be a cooperative tool to communicate societal issues with the goal of raising awareness. The results show the players agree that the game drives them to understand the challenges based on the subject and develop different points of view. Even if the case study focuses only on the experience of the ups and downs of the language barrier refugees deal with, it may also be applicable to some other social issues. The study also shows that co-creation sessions to test the prototype with the target groups brought unconsidered perspectives that advance the game mechanics and help to make it more impactful. Having a limited amount of research and design about storytelling game concepts illustrating the serious topics by using board games, this thesis offers that serious game design researchers should consider the storytelling board games aimed at raising attention on societal issues since it helps players to engage, motivate and create empathy. Moreover, it stresses the possibility of serious game design concepts to be used to promote awareness of social problems, not only for training or education purposes.

A Theatre for Change: Applying Community Based Drama Practices into Ontario Middle Schools

Harrison, Kiersten Rose 05 January 2012 (has links)
Teachers have an undeniable influence on youth, on whose shoulders tomorrow rests. It is vital for teachers to be conscious of their role in both the local and global community in order to facilitate occasions for students to develop a sense of global consciousness. By imparting to students the desire to learn and to explore their interactions with things, people and experiences, and actively pursue knowledge, they develop critical literacy skills required to both acquire understanding and be(come) understood. Through this research study, the implications of applying David Diamond’s community drama work called Theatre for Living, as an effective and critical literacy practice to enhance social conciousness within a middle school, is assesssed. The program was implemented in a split grade 7/8 and grade 8 classroom in southwestern Ontario. The study exemplifies for educators a practical yet significant step for initializing and developing a broad sense of awareness in students; that is the sense of global consciousness.

Based on the data collected from a questionnaire filled out by a group of 120 students of the 4th (October) and 5th (November) groups of 2005, we tried to identify the characteristics of the people attending the course: age, sex, schooling, marital status, occupation, monthly earning, reason for taking the course, whether the course has been helping in their jobs and lives, expectations towards learning, whether they are happy with what they are learning, what they expect to learn with this new kind of learning methodology, how the course could be more helpful, if they consider important to keep studying, and their expectations towards the future, personally and professionally. As this first overview outlined a great demand for the course because of professional reason, the second instrument used to collect data was a survey that focused on how can digital literacy change personal and professional life of former students who where, during the research, working and earning a living in a professional activity. The data analysis was based in a theoretical reference that included the following themes: What is the meaning of Digital Inclusion; The access to Information Technologies in Brazil; the Digital Literacy as part of the Inclusion Process; the Production of Knowledge and Social Awareness; The New Technologies and The Working World and Public Politics of Digital Inclusion.

The life experiences and understanding of children as citizens in a democratic South Africa

Joubert, Jacomina Christina 20 May 2008 (has links)
This inquiry is the exploration and understanding of a case study: the nine-year-old learners of an inner-city school in South Africa and their experiences of democratic South Africa as citizens. Their expressions informed me on how they perceived their democratic identities and their understandings of their citizenship. From the acquired understandings and identities I sought to extend the current conceptions of citizenship education. This study was informed by the interpretivist paradigm and guided by a conceptual framework. <p.The literature on citizenship and citizenship education concerning the young child highlighted associated concepts and theories. I employed Dewey’s theory on building a learning community and Waghid’s expansion of compassion and imaginative action. Theories used concerning young children and their construction of citizenship were the postcolonial and transforming society theory, informing that children as young as nine years can engage in notions such as citizenship and democracy. From the literature, I identified the knowledge, skills and values needed for a child to participate as an active and accountable citizen; content also offered by the South African national curriculum. This curriculum envisages the future citizen as the responsible citizen who will embrace democratic values in their everyday lives and contribute to nation-building. The data collection methods and data collection instruments were designed in a child-centred way to facilitate selfexpression. The constructivist grounded theory analysis assisted in generating significant insights. The nine-year-old learners expressed their identification with the South African democracy and its values such as social justice, which aligned with the South African ideal of social cohesion and nation-building. However, they expressed little knowledge about and no active participation in democratic processes. They expressed concern about their unsafe neighbourhood and the social injustices they encountered in their community. The young learners expressed the desire for change to transform South Africa into a ‘better nation’ to secure their and other citizens’ future. Key findings confirmed statements made by scholars in this field: citizenship education has to acknowledge the life experiences of children in order to be meaningful (thus contextualize citizenship) and to assist young children to contribute to democracy. However, the democracy can only be sustained and strengthened if the learners are knowledgeable about democratic processes and possible threats to these processes. In addition, young children need to be participants in the democracy and not only observers. The nine-year-old learners expressed the passion to do what is expected of them but seemingly lacked the participatory skills and opportunities they needed. / Thesis (PhD (Learning Support, Guidance and Counselling))--University of Pretoria, 2008. / Early Childhood Education / unrestricted

Exploring the impact of emotional intelligence training in the workplace

Jansen van Rensburg, Anna Susanna 11 1900 (has links)
The complexity of mental development in humans together with human interaction in the social context presents itself to be a continued source of investigation and exploration. Emotional Intelligence (EI) is such a field of study in the discipline of psychology. Researchers emphasized the importance and value of emotional development ("soft-skills") equal to cognitive development (“hard-skills”). EI abilities are associated with key skills and competencies required for operating successfully in today’s organizations. This study focused on this theme specifically and tried to determine how EI training impacted on the success of the individual who fits the modern working profile and how emotionally intelligent employees are beneficial to organisational success overall. An ethnographic qualitative study (including an autoethnography) was performed on individuals of different participant groupings who completed the Neuro-Link EI Program. The aim was to assess if they showed increased growth in areas of EI, specifically addressed in the program namely self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and social management. Findings indicated that EI training works with positive results. It was of great value to the individual having an immense impact on their personal lives. It further had a major positive impact on the group dynamics of individuals who attended the training. At companies where facilitators presented the program, EI training had a positive impact. A conclusion on the impact that such training had on the two companies whose staff members directly participated in this study, was not yet possible at the time of the study. The development of an awareness model for the promotion of EI training in the workplace is recommended. This may increase available knowledge regarding corporate EI training but also accelerates an emerging, but a too slowly growing movement. / Psychology / M.A. (Psychology)
