Group dynamics in the primary school

Unknown Date (has links)
The need for successful grouping of children in the primary school has been personally felt by the writer of this paper many times in her own classroom. In the years that have passed, some groups have seemed to progress quite satisfactorily in total development, while others have seemed disappointingly slow. Some groups have worked in almost perfect harmony while others have been in conflict. What dynamics were at work that contributed to successful grouping? What forces had retarded desirable growth? Much has been written recently about successful grouping of children. Enlightening evidences of good grouping practices have been reported. While some actual research studies have been conducted, most of the literature sampled reported opinions or individual suggestions for practice. The plan for this paper is to summarize the literature reviewed in the light of grouping according to the needs of children. / "A Paper." / Typescript. / "Submitted to the Graduate Council of Florida State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science." / Advisor: W. Lärmiljön i grundsärskolan : en observationsstudie / The Learning Environment in Compulsory School for Pupils with LearningDisabilities : An observation study

Frykler, Martin January 2022 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to contribute with knowledge on how social, pedagogical and physical learning environments in classrooms are designed in schools for persons with an intellectual disability. Based on this purpose the aim is to answer three different questions: How is the social learning environment designed? How is the pedagogical learning environment designed? and How is the physical learning environment designed? The study is based on twelve observations in four classrooms in three different schools. The observations follows an observation schedule based on the thoughts of SPSM in ”Värderingsverktyg för tillgänglig utbildning-förskola, skola och fritidshem” (2018). The purpose of my observation schedule was to observe which, if any, of the tools were used and to what extent. The observation schedule contained three schedules/assessment areas. The assessment areas were physical environment, social environment and pedagogical environment. Each area included assessment points and the pedagogical area contained three questions with rating scales from “all the time”, “often”, “not so often” and “never”.  Results show that the social learning environment is structured around adults. There were activities facilitating relationships and fellowship in the classrooms. All the teachers were able to engage in the social context. However, students lacked opportunities to interact with each other.  The pedagogical learning environment was to a large extent composed of and based around activities that promoted participation. Social interactions and communication figured prominently. There was however a lack of structure, of adapting teaching and provision of personalised teaching material. Results of the physical learning environment is displayed over two pages. One is about possible minor adjustments and additions that teachers and craftsmen could implement, although such adjustments and additions have been implemented in a majority of the classrooms. On a final note, there is one environment that have major shortcomings and that is the physical environment. This environment demands for major reconstructions of school premises.

Brädspelets Roll På Fritidshemmet : En kvalitativ studie om barns perception av brädspel i en fritidsmiljö / The role of board games in the leisure-time centre : A qualitative study of children's perception of board games in a leisure environment

Roos, Caspar, Myrgren, Måns January 2022 (has links)
This study's aim is to shine a light on students' attitudes on board games in the leisure time centre. Do students in middle school know the social benefits of board games, and what resources do they need to experience board games? The study looks into students' attitude on the importance of an engaged teacher in leisure time centres and also an engaged adult person in other similar environments. Vygotsky's theories around mediation and proximal development are the foundation of the study and terms such as cognitive development and social development are central for the analysis. The empirics consists of pair interviews with ten (10) students in the age range 9-13 which has been analysed from a content analysis perspective. The conclusion is that the sociocultural perspectives’ different ideas are very much present while pupils play board games in the leisure time centre, and that there is a mainly positive attitude toward board games. However, the study cannot prove that students experience the same learning as studies prove exists.

The socialisation of Zimbabwean immigrant teachers in Limpopo public secondary schools

Mahlase, Nkate Philemon January 2021 (has links)
Thesis (Ph.D. Education (Curriculum Studies)) -- University of Limpopo, 2021 / The genesis of this study was the lack of comprehensive teacher socialisation programmes for Zimbabwean immigrant teachers in public schools in the Limpopo Province, South Africa. To better understand the theoretical foundations of teacher socialisation as the phenomenon under review, the principles of expanded Activity Theory (AT) (Engeström, 1987) fused with elements of the theory of Symbolic Interactionism (SI) were used as a conceptual framework to ground and structure the study. The study sought to answer the following main research question: How are Zimbabwean immigrant teachers socialised in their host schools amid the inadequacy of existing teacher socialisation programmes for new teachers in public schools? The study followed the qualitative approach to research, based on the interpretive paradigm executed through a multiple instrumental case study design in two public secondary schools in the Sekhukhune South District of the Limpopo Province. The researcher used purposeful sampling so select five participants and two schools, which provided answers to the research questions posed. The study reveals that the teacher socialisation programmes offered in public schools are inadequate and not tailored according to the real needs of Zimbabwean immigrant teachers. The situation is entrenched by the lack of shared understanding amongst principals about the structure and implementation of an effective teacher socialisation programme, especially for immigrants. The study further revealed that Zimbabwean immigrant teachers, owing to their temporary job status, feel only partly valued and appreciated in the South African schooling system. This was evident in their perception that the employment policies for immigrants had been tightened to ensure that they do not attain any permanent employment. In addition, the study revealed that owing to the uncertainty of their job status in schools, Zimbabwean immigrant teachers prefer private schools as their employment of choice rather than public schools. Lastly, the study generally reveals that the challenges Zimbabwean immigrant teachers experience with their socialisation are more systemic than in their host schools.

Evropeizace vybraných aktérů české sociální politiky / Europeanization of the selected actors of the Czech social policy

Nigová, Eva January 2013 (has links)
This thesis deals with the Europeanization of the selected Czech social policy actors, among them some trade unions and non-governmental organizations. It examines their changes in some particular areas: in an organizational structure, in financial resources, in activities, in interests, in the used argumentation towards representatives of state power and in attitudes to the cooperation with partners from the other EU countries. These changes are observed thanks to the country's accession to the EU and/or thanks to the actors' membership in the European interest groups. The thesis tries to prove that these changes have been caused, at first, by the misfit among the Czech actors and their counterparts from the other EU member states. In the latter case it assesses if it is possible to attribute changes to socialization into the European interest groups. It also focuses on the fact whether there have been suitable conditions for the social learning of the observed actors. The questionnaire and secondary literature have been used for the evaluation. It has been proved that the concept of misfit is not suitable for these cases and thus the observed changes cannot be ascribed to this concept. Another situation occurs when evaluating changes resulting from socialization. There has been shown that the...

How can social learning be supported during the implementation of the European Water Framework Directive"

Borowski, Ilke 03 February 2009 (has links)
This thesis provides an analysis how social learning can be supported during the implementation of the WFD. Four research questions address the different characteristics of river basin management: 1) How do spatial misfits between participatory and decision-making institutions impede social learning"2) Does the formalized context of river basin management in Europe allow for social learning" 3) What are conducive environments for social learning in river basin management" 4) How does research contribute to social learning in river basin management" What challenges arise in applied research"The concept of social learning (SL), especially as developed in the European project HarmoniCOP (www.harmonicop.uos.de), formed the theoretical backbone of the analysis. This allowed to consider the challenge of SL to be supported by process design or the institutional settings. At the same time, it allowed to understand to which extent the efficiency of this support depends on the question whether or not the participants in the process recognize the options for improving their knowledge base and make use of them. The analyses have been mainly based on a German case study on the international Elbe river basin district, which was embedded in the European project HarmoniCOP. Here, the specific challenges (spatial misfit; the need for collaboration in formalized contexts) have been addressed exploring participatory and other collaboration processes as well as the actors approach to SL. In order to understand collaboration processes between research and water management, the role of research in delivering tools to support the new challenges of the WFD has been studied during activities of the European Concerted Action Harmoni-CA (www.harmoni-ca.info). The thesis closes with recommendations to improve social learning in practical river basin management.

African American Women's Understanding of How Family Values Contribute to Social Aggression

Butts, Elsa Bernice 01 January 2019 (has links)
Researchers have found that social aggression has increased among African American females. Researchers have reported that the family value systems of many African American families endorse aggressive behaviors. Beliefs of fighting verbally and physically for self-worth and equality have been embedded in the socialization process for some African American females. It is important to explore the influence of family values on socially aggressive behaviors among this population. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of African American females in early adulthood and to understand how their socially aggressive behaviors are influenced by their family values. The theoretical framework for this study was social learning theory along with aggression, a subset of social learning theory. The research question was designed to explore how African American females in early adulthood experience and perceive social aggression and family values. Ten African American females were interviewed. Moustakas' method of data analysis was used to identify 4 themes: common family values, learned socially aggressive behaviors, acting out, and handling conflict. Understanding the behaviors and experiences of African American females with socially aggressive behaviors could result in positive social change, first, by increasing knowledge about the origins of socially aggressive behaviors among this population and then by improving guidance and counseling for African American females involved in socially aggressive behaviors.

Implications of Maternal Perpetrated Interparent Violence for the Behavior of Female Adolescents: A Phenomenological Study

Hinds, Georgette Merlena Percy 01 January 2015 (has links)
Interparent violence (IPV) is a global family issue. Witnessing IPV confuses children and adolescents about the parental relationship. Adolescent females often perceived fathers as strong and depend on them for safety, security, and support. It is unclear how witnessing maternal perpetrated IPV (MPIPV) affects adolescent females' socialization and development, the perception they have of their fathers, and the meaning they ascribe to father abuse. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to contribute to the literature, provide an understanding of MPIPV implications for adolescent females' social development, and bring more awareness to the lived experiences of witnessing MPIPV. Social learning, feminist, and attachment theories were useful as the conceptual framework and in understanding the lived experience of adolescent girls who witness their mothers abusing their fathers. Five young adult females chosen through purposeful sampling from the southwest region of Florida responded to semi-structured open-ended questions. Interpretive phenomenology was the analytic framework to sort, code, and analyze the data. Findings revealed these females' experiences of anger and emotional stress, their concurrent juggling of coping and stress, their closeness to both parents, and their forgiveness to them despite inimical events between them. Recommendations were that human services professionals who worked with this population develop education and training programs to support both parents and adolescent females in an effort to reduce the effects of MPIPV. This training could result in a positive social change over time as negative perceptions, thoughts, and behaviors of adolescent girls change and increased awareness about the implications of MPIPV in the home occurs
