Social Spacing

Kirkman, Deborah A 18 May 2005 (has links)
“Places are not local things. They are moments in large-scale things, the large-scale things we call cities. Places do not make cities. It is cities that make places. The distinction is vital. We cannot make places without understanding the cities.” (Hillier 1996:151) This dissertation investigates the theoretical and practical importance of creating social spaces in the city. In distinguishes between public spaces (spaces that are merely accessible to society) and social spaces (spaces that encourage encounters between strangers), social space is identified as an integrating space that accommodates, adapts and relates to surrounding spaces. This contrasts public space whose only criteria is often that it is an open space. A theoretical argument explores the concept of ‘publicness’ in space and identifies practical design principles that reflect this concept. The physical locality of the project is then analysed where problems within the fabric of the city are identified. A series of local urban interventions, constituting a regional intervention for the Johannesburg CBD, are presented as a solution to these problems and a single intervention is then focused on. The design process documents the transmitting of knowledge into object form; design decisions are made intentionally and the final product is evaluated according to a set of interrogated design criteria. / Dissertation (MArch(Prof))--University of Pretoria, 2007. / Architecture / unrestricted

These research explore theories about fashion writing in different social spaces in Lima, Perú. Working with Transgendered People: Coworkers’ Gender Expectations, Conceptions and Behaviours in the Workplace

Falconi, Laurel January 2014 (has links)
Classification schemes are embedded into everyday life and people often expect that each category is fixed and stands alone from one another (Bowker & Star, 2000). In terms of gender, this is evident when people focus on gender as either male or female. With the increasing presence of people who are openly transgendered in the workplace (Taranowski, 2008), people’s expectations about gender as something ‘that just is’ are questioned. There is an emerging research literature focusing on people who transition in their work environments, but comparatively little on their coworkers. This research focuses on the experiences of the coworkers’ to examine how they interpret the meaning of gender after their colleague transitioned from being a “man” to being a “woman”. By analyzing and interpreting people’s behaviours in the context of a workplace where an individual reconstructs what it means to embody a specific gender identity, the feelings and behaviours that arise when expectations about gender are contradicted can be examined.

Experiences of Immigrant Entrepreneurs in the Falafel Trade in Malmö

James, Morrison-Knight January 2019 (has links)
This research investigates how immigrant entrepreneurs in the falafel business in Malmö position themselves in relation to the host society. Interviews with five immigrant entrepreneurs in the falafel trade were conducted to explore their life stories, business endeavours and their relations with the host society. The data was then analysed to establish the degree to which they feel embedded in different arenas of the host society and their society of origin. This study confirms the disadvantageous position of immigrants in Swedish society, though demonstrates the various strategies they utilise to improve their situation through entrepreneurship. The study, the first of its kind in Malmö, is important in the context of rising xenophobia in Sweden and segregation in the city.

Spaces Matter: Examining the Intrinsic and Extrinsic Implications of Social Spaces, Physical and Ideological, on Women of Color Navigating Law School and Post-Graduate Endeavors

Smith, Devianna January 2023 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Celeste Wells / This thesis explores the ways in which physical and ideological spaces influence the experiences of women of color in law school and their subsequent perception of those spaces. Participants were interviewed and asked questions about their holistic experience in law school. The researcher applied Oyserman’s racial-ethnic self-schemas theory and Crenshaw’s intersectionality approach to analyze and interpret the findings of the data. Ultimately, it was concluded that women of color recognized their law school’s ability to prepare them to be lawyers but felt less so about their ability to navigate the professional legal industry as a woman of color. In addition, the thesis argues that the negative experiences of women of color go beyond imposter syndrome and other identity-based elements. Instead, it is more directly rooted in the spaces in law school, specifically related to the pedagogical model of the institution that clashes with identity-based experiences. Thus, the thesis suggests ways that law schools can better support women of color and a direction for future areas of study. / Thesis (BA) — Boston College, 2023. / Submitted to: Boston College. / The master’s thesis aims to understand the brand’s movement through the social spaces, covering the process that accept and manage the identity until to the a individual experience aggregation, media, urban environments and events that the brands interact. The investigation of this way happens through a studyperspective of the mediatization beyond to the strategies of institutions (journalism and publicity, and others) in the production and reception sphere, accentuating the movement as a process that produce another sense about brand. Understanding Outdoor Social Spaces: Use of Collaborative-Sketching to Capture Users' Imagination as a Rich Source of Needs and Desires

Alzahrani, Adel Bakheet 07 July 2015 (has links)
The way in which environmental designers design neighborhood spaces has a role to play in the quality of outdoor spaces that shapes and directs daily outdoor social activities as well as creates a bridge between individuals and the local community. The high quality design of outdoor spaces is fundamental in fostering social cohesion among users/residents in order to produce a healthy social atmosphere, whereas a decline in the quality of outdoor spaces can contribute to antisocial behavior. Today, In Jeddah City, Saudi Arabia, in many cases of new neighborhoods, the outdoor space has become abandoned, and empty, or is avoided. Within this setting, these spaces do not provide opportunities for families with their children to gather and play, to sit and socialize with neighbors, to gather in outdoor activities, to walk to the mosque or school, or to do their daily grocery shopping without being threatened by dangerous car traffic. Moreover, even if users and residents experience problems in their neighborhood, and have their own needs and visions to solve the problem, they do not have the experience to mentally visualize and resolve these problems. Through this qualitative research, the researcher proposes a new approach in incorporating users' imagination in the ideation process of design in order to examine to extend the current normative theory through the development of a more "collaborative ideation process."In this new collaborative process, the representation of ideas becomes more iterative and knowledge exchange between researcher and users becomes more seamless. Through incorporating the researcher's sketching skills as a process of "collaborative-sketching," possible ideas and solutions are explored that are responsive to the needs and desires of users. Using a number of photographs of an outdoor residential space as an example, the objective of this study is to examine the use of collaborative sketching as a way of taping into users' imagination as a rich source of their needs and desires to empower the design process. The findings showed that applying a collaborative sketching process in the early ideation stage of design can result in a rich exchange between designers and user, enabling the designer to have a better and more realistic understanding of needs and desires from the perspective of the user. Through this collaborative-sketching process, the users were continuously, iteratively, and instantly stimulated to not only to narrate their needs and desires, but to visually provide realistic and specific details about the social activities and physical elements including their affordance, rationale of using, value of use, and how social interactions might occur within the different settings. / Ph. Raumformate: Bausteine in Prozessen der Neuverräumlichung

Middell, Matthias 01 February 2022 (has links)

The Convergence- The Intersection of Two Extreme Typologies in Cities

Kakarlapudi, Vaishnavi Drusya 26 May 2023 (has links)
In the early 20th century, downtown areas were the primary centers of commerce, industry, and cultural activity in many American cities. However, with the rise of suburbanization, many of these downtown areas began to experience economic decline and population loss. Factors that contributed to this decline included the decentralization of jobs and economic activity to suburban areas, as well as the increasing availability of affordable automobiles that allowed people to commute longer distances. As more people moved to the suburbs, downtown areas became associated with problems such as crime, poverty, and decay. This led to a further decline in urban areas as businesses and residents left for the suburbs. This is how the edge cities started to rise. Transit development is a significant impact on the shift of population to edge cities. The term "edge cities"was coined by Joel Garreau in his 1991 book "Edge Cities: Life on the New Frontier". which are suburban areas that have become significant employment centers and have developed downtown-like characteristics. These urban areas are driven by factors such as the desire for walkable neighborhoods, access to cultural amenities, and job opportunities that are like urban downtowns. The Thesis proposal explores combining both suburban and urban lifestyles resulting in a hybrid environment that offers the best of both worlds. It will provide the sense of community and neighborhood that is often found in suburban areas, along with the convenience and accessibility to urban amenities and services. The concept will be addressing how horizontal living (Suburban) and how vertical living (Downtown) would address a different lifestyle that will give access to a range of shops, restaurants, and entertainment options within a short walk or bike from home, as well as having park spaces and playgrounds connecting between the buildings will help to thrive for better and healthy communities. This project will also offer the benefits of urban living, such as the opportunity to work in a dynamic and diverse environment, access to cultural events and activities, and the convenience of public transportation. This idea of convergence is focusing on the newly proposed purple line transit corridor and Adelphi-West Metro Station, Maryland. It envisions a unique urban fabric that will set into action to reduce reliance on cars by promoting more sustainable way of life. / Master of Science / Rapid urbanization has impacted the natural landscape in the United States. The shift of population to suburbs in the United States was primarily driven by a combination of factors that arose in the mid-20th century, including the growth of automobile use, the development of the interstate highway system, and the expansion of affordable single-family homes in suburban areas. One of the main reasons people are moving to these areas is the job market, quality of life, and affordability. In recent years, there has been a growing trend of people moving from Washington, DC to the nearby communities of Bethesda and Silver Spring. Both places are easily accessible from downtown by means of transportation. These places are known for their vibrant downtown areas with a range of shops, restaurants, and cultural attractions. They also offer a few outdoor amenities, including park spaces, trails, and other recreational opportunities. This shift in population has been observed in many other areas on the Purple Line corridor. In these one of the major potential places would be Adelphi-West. This thesis is going to propose an adaptive master plan by critiquing the existing master plan for the Adelphi-West Metro Station in three strategic ways. Ecology Connectivity Efficient uses (spaces) Secondly, it is creating an urban fabric by providing a suburban and a downtown lifestyle that addresses achieving vibrant and diverse communities which offer a range of amenities, including shopping centers, restaurants, and entertainment venues, making them attractive destinations for both workers and residents.
