Escolha de alvos coespecíficos na observação do uso de ferramentas por macacos-prego (Cebus libidinosus) selvagens / Choice of conspecific targets in the observation of tool use by wild bearded capuchin monkeys (Cebus libidinosus)Silva, Eduardo Darvin Ramos da 02 July 2008 (has links)
The tool-aided cracking of encapsulated fruit by capuchin monkeys is a frequent target of observation and scrounging by conspecifics, well-tolerated and usually younger and less proficient. The present study aimed to examine the process of observational targets choice by the observers, and whether this choice can optimize scrounging opportunities. The research was conducted with a group of wild bearded capuchin monkeys (Cebus libidinosus) in Fazenda Boa Vista (Piauí, Brazil), in an ecotone area between cerrado and caatinga savanna-like environments. Food sharing in contexts other than nut cracking, as well as the use of tools to crack open other food items were also analyzed. Individuals from all age and sex classes were involved in nut cracking observation. Our analyses show that the monkeys preferentially chosen as observational targets were the ones exhibiting the greater Frequency, Proficiency, and Productivity in nut cracking. In spite of a few agonistic interactions during observation events, the targets tend to be very tolerant to observation and to scrounging (25% of the nut cracking events are observed, and more than half of these resulted in scrounging). The observers had the opportunity of eating nuts leftovers and of manipulating items from the cracking sites, both in the presence and in the absence of the targets. These findings strengthen the idea that the conditions and possibilities experienced by the observers-scroungers optimize the opportunities for socially biased learning processes, at least by stimulus enhancement. Such close exposure to the targets behavior could also influence finer details of the observers behavior in the long run. The present study is the first one to deal with these interactions between tool manipulators and observers/scroungers in a wild population and discusses the similarities and differences from previous observations from a semi-free population.

Previous issue date: 2009-08-07 / Severa1 studies have demonstrated that parenting works as contexts for 1eaming both
pro-socia1 and inadequate chi1dren's behavior. Exercising these practices demands
specific abi1ities, which are absent in the parents' repertoires that present difficulties in
teaching, and maintaining the pro-socia1 behavior, controlling their chi1dren's behavior
prob1ems. These abi1ities have been taught during training programs with parents
enabling them to act efficient1y on the re1ationship with their chi1dren. The present
study has ana1yzed the modalities of specific contingent arrangements between the
caretaker's actions, and the 1eaming and maintenance of the chi1d's behavior. Through
the manipu1ation of a certain category of classes of the caretakers' positiV'eresponses, it
was tried to observe the co-variation possibi1ities in the other categories of answers of
both invo1ved in the díade. Three pairs of caretaker-chi1d, that participated in the study
were se1ected in a service of parents' orientation in an inner city of Minas Gerais. Three
movie cameras,a mini tape recorder and a Standardized Observation Codes - SOC IlI,
were used as instruments. The procedure was divided in three stages: base 1ine,
intervention and post intervention. During the all the study, dai1y registration of home
interactions between caretaker and child was take in audio and video, 24 hours a day,
ranging from 12 to 18 days in accordance with each dyad design, due to a mu1tip1ebase
1ine among participants . The episodes of interaction that contaíned at 1east an
uninterrupted hour of re1ationship between caretaker-chi1d were se1ected. In the base
1ine period notes were IDade, and they produced the data used during th,e iptervention.
Right after the base tine, portions of interaction of each fami1y in whicll a positive
interaction had happened between the son's behavior and the mother's subsNuent
answer were se1ected. Those portions were reproduced in six sessions of individual
intervention in which the researcher together with the caretaker ana1yzed the effects of
the caretaker's positive actions on her child's answers. Then for three more days, data
were collected without intervention (post-intervention period). Caretakers' and
chi1dren's behaviors were registered during the who1e e1apsing time ofthe study. Th~se
behaviors were classified as positive, aversive and neutral. The data indicate that in ~e
three pairs the caretakers presented preponderance of aversive andneutra1 behaviors
during the base 1ine. During and after the intervention, those types of behaviórs
decreased in occurrence and they noted1y increased the caretakers' positive behaviors.
The post-intervention data show the continuation of positive response of the caretakers
and their chi1dren during the observed period. This study points out that trainings based
on1y on the se1ection of caretakers' positive responses can be a good strategy for the
improvement of their chi1dren's social behaviors / Vários estudos têm demonstrado que as práticas parentais funcionam como contextos
O presente estudo
Participaram do estudo três díades, cuidadoracriança,
No
Esses trechos eram

Previous issue date: 2005-09-21 / The starting point of this research is a lifelong personal question: how does spontaneous learning occurs in workplaces? To this question follows: Is it possible to assimilate the tacit knowledge sphere in workplaces practices?
Aiming to answer those initial questions, the ethnographical approach is presented as a possibility to capture the embedded and non-articulated knowledge among multiple people acting together in workplaces settings.
The ethnographical research done on a 11 months field research at a chemical plant located in the area of Campinas, in Brazil, became of historical reference, both as a pioneer ethnographical research done on entrepreneurial context and as a first approach to the nature and presence of communities of practice in workplaces.
Theoretical background of this research is based on a literature that emphasizes the situational and experiential nature of learning as proposed by Dewey and other learning in practice authors. The community of practice perspective is based on the early 90´s work of Jean Lave and Etienne Wenger developed at the Institute of Research on Learning in Palo Alto, California.
The social and negotiated character of tacit and implicit knowledge of spontaneous learning in action is explored through two problem-situations related to the productive processes occurred during the ethnographical research.
The situated character of learning is presented through the participation on a one-month in company course structured to prepare a group of 20 recently hired chemical operators which we attended as regular student.
By placing the anthropologist as a research subject and apprentice of a dated and situated productive activity, the ethnographical approach identifies the social organization and the access structure of apprenticeship on the production process, aiming to reach a relational point of view of social determinants that improve or inhibits learning processes in workplaces.
Key words: Ethnography, communities of practice, social learning, tacit knowledge / O ponto de partida desta dissertação esta na pergunta que me persegue de longa data: como ocorre a aprendizagem espontânea em ambientes de trabalho?

The context of behavioural flexibility in chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) : implications for the evolution of cumulative cultureDavis, Sarah Jayne January 2017 (has links)
Cumulative culture is rare, if not altogether absent in non-human species. At the foundation of cumulative learning is the ability to flexibly modify, relinquish or build upon prior behaviours to make them more productive or efficient. Within the primate literature, a failure to optimise solutions in this way is often proposed to derive from low-fidelity copying of witnessed behaviours, sub-optimal social learning heuristics, or a lack of relevant socio-cognitive adaptations. However, humans can also be markedly inflexible in their behaviours, perseverating with, or becoming fixated on outdated or inappropriate responses. Humans show differential patterns of flexibility as a function of cognitive load, exhibiting difficulties with inhibiting suboptimal behaviours when there are high demands on working memory. Here I present a series of studies on captive chimpanzees which show that not only is inhibitory control compromised in chimpanzees, but indicate ape behavioural conservatism may be underlain by similar constraints as in humans; chimpanzees show relatively little conservatism when behavioural optimisation involves the inhibition of a well-established but simple solution, or the addition of a simple modification to a well-established but complex solution. In contrast, when behavioural optimisation involves the inhibition of a well-established but complex solution, and especially when the alternative solution is also complex, chimpanzees show evidence of behavioural conservatism. I propose that conservatism is linked to behavioural complexity, potentially mediated by cognitive resource availability, and may be an important factor in the evolution of cumulative culture.

Living and learning together : integrating developmental systems theory, radical embodied cognitive science, and relational thinking in the study of social learningPagnotta, Murillo January 2018 (has links)
Behavioural scientists argue that ‘social learning' provides the link between biological phenomena and cultural phenomena because of its role in the ‘cultural transmission' of knowledge among individuals within and across generations. However, leading authors within the social sciences have proposed alternative ways of thinking about social life not founded on the Modern oppositions including nature-culture, biology-culture, body-mind, and individual-society. Similarly, the distinction between a domain of nature and a domain of nurture has also been extensively criticized within biology. Finally, advocates of ‘radical embodied cognitive science' offer an alternative to the representational-computational view of the mind which supports the conventional notion of culture and cultural information. This thesis attempts to integrate developmental systems theory, radical embodied cognitive science, and relational thinking, with the goal to bring the field of social learning closer to these critical theoretical developments. In Chapter 2, I find no justification for the claim that the genome carries information in the sense of specification of biological form. Chapter 3 presents a view of ontogeny as a historical, relational, constructive and contingent process. Chapter 4 uses the notions of environmental information, abilities, affordances, and intentions to make sense of behaviour and learning. In Chapter 5, I argue that the notion of social learning can be understood in terms of relational histories of development rather than in terms of transmission of information. I then report empirical studies investigating behavioural coordination and social learning consistent with this theoretical framework. Chapter 6 presents evidence that dyads in a joint making activity synchronize their attention constrained by their changing situation and that coordination of attention is predictive of implicit and explicit learning. Chapter 7 presents evidence that joint attention does not require gaze following and that attentional coordination is predictive of learning a manual task. Together, these theoretical and empirical studies suggest a new way of thinking about how humans and other animals live and learn socially, one that is consistent with critical theoretical and philosophical developments that are currently neglected in the literature on social learning.

Globalization is exerting strong pressure towards firms so that they start using social responsibility practices, adopting codes of conduct related to preserving of environment, to working conditions and to respect to human rights. Nowadays, it is also necessary that the state, through educational institutions, promotes critic thinking and citizenship, empowering the community with knowledge which will enable the comprehension of local and international challenges. Regarding this scenario, this paper proposes improvements in the social processes of a federal educational institution, beginning with the contribution of knowledge management towards social responsibility implementation. In face of this problem, the object became to identify potential barriers in the implementation of knowledge management and how these barriers relate to the awareness of social responsibility in the institution. The research involved revision of literature related to Knowledge Management, Social Responsibility and Social Learning, adopting as methodology the case study and the use of a questionnaire with a limited geographical cut to the researched institution. It is a qualitative study, with bibliographical, documentary and field research, direct observation and applied. It was verified that the data o collected pointed to the need for training and capacity building on social issues, the need for a more participatory management and a better flow and storage of information in order to build the organizational memory. It was thus concluded that the proposed contributions can reduce the difficulties in the problem addressed, providing improvements in social processes through increased efficiency of knowledge management in the institution.

Previous issue date: 2013-08-15 / The aim of this study was to understand the individual and social learning process happening between subjects participating in a social programme called Doutores Cidadãos, organized by the non profit organization Canto Cidadão. Moreover, it was meant to identify, analyse and describe what and how those subjects learn and how they apply those learning experiences in their personal and work life, based on the following question: What and how the volunteers learn individually and collectively when applying their volunteering activities? Therefore, it was designed three specific objectives: the first one was to identify, describe and analyse the individual learning processes this group of volunteers apply so as to develop their volunteer activities. The second one was to describe and analyse the social interactions role inside the environment where the volunteer activities happen, as well as their impact in the development of the learning process. The third and last one was to identify, describe and analyse what those volunteers apply regarding the volunteering experience learning in their formal and informal activities at work. It was carried out a basic or general qualitative study in the interpretational paradigm. The data were collected from the testimonial of 15 volunteer subjects participants in the project through semi structured interview, and analysed based on the template analysis proposed by Nigel King. We were based on the fact that the learning process must be looked at according to a social focus, and not as mere individual phenomena. On the other hand, it happens from human actions and interactions. The results analysis goes back to the social learning theory of Bente Elkjaer and the transformative learning theory of Jack Mezirow, and the focus was on the individual and collective learning. The results show that the volunteering experience was responsible for the transformative learning experiences the subjects have faced, through changes in the personal reference charts. It was also stated informal and social learning processes, indicating a relationship between being a volunteer and acquiring new learning experiences.

Previous issue date: 2015-03-18 / Fundo Mackenzie de Pesquisa / This work aimed to analyze the process of organizational learning under a social lens in a
network of enterprises, relating such process to the premises of social learning for
sustainability (SLfS). The purpose was to articulate the theory of social learning in these two
approaches: a broader one, namely, the sustainability, and a more restricted one, that is, the
organizational environment, based on a project of social development. The theoretical
reference adopted for such study was based on studies focused on SLfS and on discussions
regarding the social dimension of sustainability. As for the organizational context, the study
recovered the concept of social learning within organizations, seeking to relate such concept
to the critical elements of SLfS as well as to the barriers of organizational learning. To
achieve such goal, the option was to choose a project built and maintained by means of social
interactions among actors that experienced challenges and, hence, needed to dialogue and
collaborate among themselves so to as to attain the same objectives. Accordingly, it was
carried out a case study involving a network of popular ventures managed by Programa
Mulher Empreendedora housed by Instituto Consulado da Mulher (ICM). This is the main
social program of the trademark Consul , which is anchored in sustainability projects
developed by such company. The main technique in the data gathering was the nonparticipant
observation, which was complemented by documentation analyses and semi-structured
interviews. With respect to the analysis of qualitative data, it was utilized the interpretative
procedures inspired by Flores (1994). The results depicted similarities among the factors that
promote social learning, considering the perspective of sustainability as well as that of
organizational. The critical elements observed in the studies on sustainability (reflection and
critical thinking; participation and engagement; negotiation and collaboration; systemic
thinking; and communication) were corroborated in the interactions in the networks of
enterprises, considering the social learning in the organizations. The questioning and
dialogues among the entrepreneurs, coupled with the commitment to the businesses, had
important roles for the learning process as the problems and solutions were discussed with
transparency and on a democratic fashion. The adoption of new approaches and the changes
in behavior were the results of learning processes derived from the daily and practical
experiences. Moreover, the relation among the five structural factors of the Program
contributed to advance the learning process among the participants: (i) the mutual help among
the ventures within the supply chain; (ii) the setting of the networks of ventures; (iii) the
exchange of experience among the participants; (iv) the facilitation from the social educator;
and (v) the stimulus for the process of reflection-action. The social educator in charge of
assisting the ventures had an important function to encourage questioning and dialogue in the
entrepreneurs, given the social and cultural context of the participating: low income and low
literacy women. For the conception of social learning, a greater integration of the ventures in
the network of experiences exchanges may reduce the effect of the fragility existing in the
Program: the turnover of the entrepreneurs. At the end of the study, theoretical and practical
subsidies were provided so that social development programs can be enhanced based on a
more intelligible knowledge about the learning process among the participating actors.
A observação
nos estudos de sustentabilidade (reflexão e pensamento crítico; participação e engajamento;
