The un/selfish leader : Changing notions in a Tamil Nadu villageAlm, Björn January 2006 (has links)

'The un/selfish' leader explores notions of selfishness, as they were perceived by people in the village of Ekkaraiyur, Tamil Nadu, India, at a time they associated with thorough changes in their lives.

Discussing locally held notions about agrarian change, seen as causing the erosion of earlier village loyalties and leading to the emergence of a new type of leaders, the study focus on the censure of the alleged corruption of these leaders. Expressed in a rich repertoire of stories about the ideals of leadership and about the excellence of the past and foreign societies, the censure was routinely voiced in public debates and in everyday conversations.

Set against a background an increasing role of the state for the people in Ekkaraiyur, the censure of leaders implied a critique of the contemporary society they were taken to represent. Moreover, the study argues that the critique was grounded in evaluations of individualism and selfishness in human nature.

The study is based on fieldwork carried out in Ekkaraiyur between 1988 and 1990

Ekologisk konsumtion : Vanas och kunskapens maktSöderlund, Anna-Karin January 2008 (has links)

/
These days the environmental problems are getting more in focus and the supply of organic food is increasing in the supermarkets. More people are buying organic food than before but the majority still chooses to buy conventional food despite that they’re often positive towards the organic option. To clarify what lies behind the consumers´ shopping habits I have interviewed four informants. Two who usually buy organic food and two who usually buy conventional food. There are several reasons why the consumer chooses to buy conventional food and not the organic option. When the consumer faces several options there are different factors such as quality, health, prize and ethical aspects that matter. Their existing shopping habits, knowledge and their social identity are also factors that matter. The two ecological consumers had knowledge and interest in organic food and despite the prize difference they appreciated the extra value of it. The conventional consumer lacked knowledge of organic food and didn’t appreciate its advantages. Instead they choose to buy food after their habits and the quality of the products.

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how women in Cape Town reflect over and deal with HIV/AIDS in their everyday lives and also how they explain the cause and spread of the virus. The thesis is based on two months of fieldwork in Cape Town, South Africa, where I got the opportunity to interview three women about HIV/AIDS and how they related to the disease as well as how people in general relate to it. The women I interviewed were all working with HIV/AIDS as counsellors and educational staff. The women work in Nyanga, Observatory and Wynberg, three very different areas in Cape Town.
/

: Missbrukare, subkultur och stigmatiseringde Alencar, Björn January 2006 (has links)

This essay will focus on drug addicts and the world as they see it. The essay is based on intervjues with three men and one woman and participant observation of the three men´s social life in the surroundings of Stockholm. The informants’ opinions and experiences are central as well as the observations made of them during an intensive fieldwork. The study which was of an exploring character has revealed a complex relationship between the informants and society. The concepts of subculture and stigmatization seem equally central in the social life and perception of life of these drug addicts. The intricate relationship between the two needs further study before a model of the interrelationship can be presented. In a final discussion of the results of the study with the informants they confirm that they see themselves both as part of a subculture and stigmatized by society.

The study also includes some ethical reflections on the role of the investigator in relation to informants who are drug addicts.

Creating People and Places : How the journalistic narrative shapes our image of the worldNylund, Jukka January 2006 (has links)

Media is one of the most important gateways to the world beyond for most people. Every day we are presented with images of distant places and peoples and the events they are a part of. During the years the way these news events have been presented to the public has changed but still they create images within us of these distant places and peoples.

This paper discusses how the journalistic narrative is built up based on some theories describing media and how is used and/or uses the society it is a part of. The paper tries to answer questions on how the image of the distant places and peoples is built up, based on these theories and discussions within the journalistic community.

The process from source to print is complex. Several part takers have an interest in putting out their view of the world to the public. This creates a complex web of dependencies between the media and different groups in society. In the end the image presented is a side effect of how the journalistic text is built up, where the narrative has to be firmly rooted with individuals and places to gain acceptance with the public, and where people and places described often become artifacts, rooted in very specific events.

Being Home in the Pearl of the OrientPersson, Mattias January 2007 (has links)

Hong Kong is an Asian metropolis with a population of approximately seven million. Previous studies on the region concentrate on its history that is marked by radical changes to conclude that the on-going makeovers in the physical environment leave people without a permanence of place. Researchers also say that this fluid history eradicates temporal identity because pre-modernism and post-modernism exist at the same time. This study investigates how to describe and explain the relationship between people and environment in Hong Kong. Six informants who are from Hong Kong and who live in Hong Kong help to portray an image of home that does not agree with earlier studies. By looking at physical and emotional boundaries, expressions, and temporal dimensions, this study shows that people cannot be separated from their environment as both parts constitute the unity of being home. This study therefore concludes that neither the sense of place nor the temporal identity is threatened by the region's history of instability. Rather, the informants express a strong sense of home because of the fast pace of life in Hong Kong.
