2	Representations of Central Americans in CISPES-sponsored Texts during the Central American peace and solidarity movement Centeno-Meléndez, José Alfredo 10 October 2014 (has links) This study examines the representations of Salvadorans and other Central Americans in film, visual, and written texts used by the Dallas chapter of CISPES during the eighties. Drawing from Susan Sontag’s scholarship on the ideological workings of war photography and Elizabeth Barnes’s work on sentimental literature, I show that pamphlets created and distributed by CISPES relied on over-saturated images and written descriptions of state-sanctioned physical violence inflicted on Central Americans in order to generate sympathy for the other. While the representations of Central Americans in CISPES pamphlets as feminized and docile subjects were strategic in showing the oppressive conditions that the U.S. helped fund, these images also overlooked the fact that Central Americans played essential roles in their fight against their countries repressions and U.S. foreign policies. As such, I turn to a medium where Salvadorans had the opportunity to speak out about their own experiences during the U.S.-backed civil war. I analyze the Dutch documentary film El Salvador: Revolution or Death? (1980) and argue that individuals showed their subjectivities and agency even when introduced as victims of state-sanctioned violence. This documentary did not solely rely on over-saturated images of violence on the Central American other—it provided peasants with an international platform to represent themselves, albeit still through a mediated form. In-between harrowing scenes showcasing dead and brutalized bodies were also instances where Salvadorans challenged assumptions of their political ineptness and reminded U.S. residents of their own prominence within the Central American solidarity movement. / text Testimonio Central America U.S.-Salvadoran relations
3	Vztah polské katolické církve k hnutí Solidarita do roku 1989 a jeho reflexe v českém samizdatu / The relationship of the Polish Catholic Church to the Solidarity movement and its image in Czech samizdat Smolka, Radek January 2021 (has links) The diploma thesis deals with the relationship of the Solidarity movement with the Catholic Church in Poland until 1989 and the manifestations of this relationship in Czech samizdat periodicals. The researched periodicals are Lidové noviny, Informace o Charte 77 and Informace o církvi. The thesis presents the situation of the Polish civil opposition, especially in the 1980s. Much of the work is devoted to the Solidarity movement. Not only important milestones of this movement are presented here, but to some extent also its sociological profile. In addition to the civic opposition, the situation of the Catholic Church in Poland is described with emphasis on the circumstances and events that built the relationship between the Church and the stateas well as between the Church and the Solidarity movement. Due to the profile of the work, one of the chapters also deals with dissent in the then Czechoslovakia, both civic and Catholic. The researched periodicals have a samizdat character, so one of the chapters is dedicated to this form of written text and the author explains the reasons for choosing the three mentioned samizdat titles. 4	Contemporary Perceptions of the Solidarity Movement Held by Polish Nationals Buhr, Nathan P 01 May 2013 (has links) (PDF) Widespread participation in the 1980s Solidarity movement by Polish nationals of both genders, varying ideologies, and differing political backgrounds has led to diverse views of the history and narrative of the movement that today is interpreted in differing ways by groups and individuals. To gain a better understanding of how Poles view this unique time period of their history a survey featuring 54 questions was dispatched to and completed by over 121 Polish nationals. All questions relate to the Solidarity movement in categories covering: Prominent People, Media, Economics, Religion, and Education and concluding with a free-write section for additional comments by participants. The results show near common agreement on some points while in other areas participants expressed conflicting opinions and views. These varying perspectives reflect the ongoing debate concerning the ethos of the Solidarity movement in addition to its effect on contemporary Polish culture. 5	Social Movements, Subjectivity, and Solidarity: Witnessing Rhetoric of the International Solidarity Movement Wachsmann, Emily Brook 08 1900 (has links) This study engaged in pushing the current political limitations created by the political impasse of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, by imagining new possibilities for radical political change, agency, and subjectivity for both the international activists volunteering with the International Solidarity Movement as well as Palestinians enduring the brutality of life under occupation. The role of the witness and testimony is brought to bear on activism and rhetoric the social movement ISM in Palestine. Approaches the past studies of the rhetoric of social movements arguing that rhetorical studies often disassociated 'social' from social movements, rendering invisible questions of the social and subjectivity from their frames for evaluation. Using the testimonies of these witnesses, Palestinians and activists, as the rhetorical production of the social movement, this study provides an effort to put the social body back into rhetorical studies of social movements. The relationships of subjectivity and desubjectification, as well as, possession of subjects by agency and the role of the witness with each of these is discussed in terms of Palestinian and activist potential for subjectification and desubjectifiation. It is investigated by analyzing the mobilization processes of the two campaigns. The materials used in this study is the theoretical framework of Resource Mobilization Theory’s five resource mobilization categories. It was used as an alternative way to examine how and understand why the two movements turned out to be so different, where one was a labor movement and the other were not. The method used was a qualitative comparative case study. Through the comparison the study could identify some differences between the two movements campaigns. Through the comparison, the study was able to identify certain differences between the two movement campaigns. On the one hand, the scope and network of the campaigns were important for their emergence, and on the otherhand, the temporal context was important for the mobilizations of the cases.
