Arbetarrörelsen, Folkets Hus och offentligheten i Bromölla 1905-1960

The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the People’s House in Bromölla as an arena for a plebeian public sphere. More specific, the analysis revolves around how the labour movement created a plebeian public sphere, the construction of the very arena and the activities there, including study circles, labour library, theatre plays, film showings, dance evenings and other amusements as parts of adult education among the working class people. It also comprises examinations of the labour movement’s acting in the local political arena, the labour movement’s connections with the local bourgeoisie on matters concerning politics and the People’s House. The main theoretical perspective is based on Jürgen Habermas’ theory of bourgeois public sphere, reformulated to a plebeian public sphere. The adult education in study circles mainly focused on subjects related to the work in the local politics and in the trade union, i.e. for the activities in the public sphere. These parts of the adult education were primarily a matter for the male part of the labour movement. This mirrors the situation in politics and in the trade union, where foremost men were engaged. Beside the trade union and political studies, subjects like Swedish, English, Esperanto, mathematics and literature were common. From time to time socialism and Marxism were studied. The women mainly studied humanistic subjects with individual development and hold thus the vision of the education ideologists within the labour movement. In the 1940’s the study circles decreased, and finally, in the end of the 1950’s almost ceased. Despite this the education did not cease, but were replaced by music, singing, dancing and machine sewing courses arranged by commercial companies and aesthetic associations. The People’s House was from the beginning open even for associations outside the labour movement. In the 1940’s and, in particularly, the 1950’s the People’s House became an assembly hall for a huge range of associations. Among the tenants were Free Church parishes, athletic associations, hobby associations, temperance societies, political parties from left to right, trade unions, authorities, companies, and the municipal of Bromölla. People’s house was also a place for wedding and birthday celebrations and other private parties. Among the more frequent tenants were Free Churches and music, singing and athletic associations, beside Bromölla municipal, which were a permanent tenant, for instance for the municipal library. The amount of associations from outside the labour movement among the tenants exceeded for some years in the end of 1950’s the labour movement’s meetings. This cross class policy was a conscious strategy by the People’s House association, in order to be a cultural institution for all inhabitants in Bromölla. The municipal council of Bromölla was even a part of this policy when subsidizing the People’s House association. It was in accordance with the cross class and consensus policy which the social democratic movement by this time was an exponent of. The People’s House in Bromölla was thus an arena not only for the labour movement, but also for the entire society.

Politikers användande av Twitter : En studie av relationen mellan privata och offentliga samtal i den sociala sfären

This study’s aim was to explore how the social media Twitter is used by Swedish political leaders and how they manage the relationship between having both private and public conversations in a new public sphere, the social sphere. In Sweden, studies in this area are yet to grow. We achieved our aim by responding to our three questions at the issue: What kind of content is published in each of the politicians Twitter stream? Are the politicians private or public persons on Twitter? Are the politicians using Twitters interactive functions? We conducted our analysis by performing a quantitative content analysis. Our material consisted of Twits published by two selected Swedish politicians between September 1st to September 23rd, 2010. We based our study and results around the discussion of private, public and social spheres along with political communication. / Målet med denna studie var att undersöka hur det sociala mediet Twitter används av svenska politiska ledare och hur de hanterar relationen mellan privata och offentliga samtal i en ny offentlig sfär, den sociala sfären. I Sverige finns ännu inte tillräckligt många studier av detta slag. Vi uppnådde vårt mål genom att svara på våra tre frågeställningar: Vilken typ av innehåll publiceras i de respektive politikernas Twitterflöden? Är politikerna privata eller offentliga personer på Twitter? Använder sig politikerna av Twitters sociala funktioner? Vi genomförde vår analys med hjälp av metoden kvantitativ innehållsanalys. Vårt material bestod av Twitterinlägg publicerade av två utvalda svenska politiker mellan 1 september och 23 september 2010. Vi baserade vår studie och våra resultat på diskussioner kring privata, offentliga och sociala sfärer samt politisk kommunikation.

Late Transition Metal Complexes Bearing Functionalized N-Heterocyclic Carbenes and the Catalytic Hydrogenation of Polar Double Bonds

Late transition metal complexes of silver(I), rhodium(I), ruthenium(II), palladium(II) and platinum(II) containing a nitrile-functionalized N-heterocyclic carbene ligand (C-CN) were prepared. The nitrile group on the C–CN ligand was shown to undergo hydrolysis under basic conditions, leading to a silver(I) carbene complex with a primary-amido functional group, and a trimetallic complex of palladium(II) with a partially hydrolyzed C–N–N–C donor ligand. The reduction of a nitrile-functionalized imidazolium salt in the presence of nickel(II) chloride under mild conditions yielded an axially chiral square-planar nickel(II) complex containing a unique primary-amino functionalized N-heterocyclic carbene ligand (C-NH2). A transmetalation reaction moved this chelating C–NH2 ligand from nickel(II) to ruthenium(II), osmium(II), and iridium(III), yielding important catalysts for the hydrogenation of polar double bonds. The ruthenium(II) complex, [Ru(p-cymene)(C–NH2)Cl]PF6 catalyzed the transfer and H2-hydrogenation of ketones. The bifunctional hydride complex, [Ru(p-cymene)(C–NH2)H]PF6, which contains a Ru–H/N–H couple showed no activity under catalytic conditions unless when activated by a base. The outer-sphere mechanism involving bifunctional catalysis of ketone reduction is disfavored according to experimental and theoretical studies and an inner-sphere mechanism is proposed involving the decoordination of the amine donor from the C–NH2 ligand. The ruthenium(II) complex [RuCp*(C–NH2)py]PF6 showed higher activity than the iridium(III) complex [IrCp*(C–NH2)Cl]PF6 in the hydrogenation of ketones. This ruthenium(II) complex also catalyzes the hydrogenation of an aromatic ester, a ketimine, and the hydrogenolysis of styrene oxide. We proposed an alcohol-assisted outer sphere bifunctional mechanism for both systems based on experimental findings and theoretical calculations. The cationic iridium(III) hydride complex, [IrCp*(C–NH2)H]PF6 , was prepared and this failed to react with a ketone in the absence of base. The crucial role of the alkoxide base was demonstrated in the activation of this hydride complex in catalysis. Calculations support the proposal that the base deprotonates the amine group of this hydride complex and triggers the migration of the hydride to the η5-Cp* ring producing a neutral iridium(I) amido complex. This system contains an active Ir–H/N–H couple required for the outer sphere hydrogenation of ketones in the bifunctional mechanism.

Public knowledge beyond journalism : infotainment, satire and Australian television

This thesis examines the changing relationships between television, politics, audiences and the public sphere. Premised on the notion that mediated politics is now understood “in new ways by new voices” (Jones, 2005: 4), and appropriating what McNair (2003) calls a “chaos theory” of journalism sociology, this thesis explores how two different contemporary Australian political television programs (Sunrise and The Chaser’s War on Everything) are viewed, understood, and used by audiences. In analysing these programs from textual, industry and audience perspectives, this thesis argues that journalism has been largely thought about in overly simplistic binary terms which have failed to reflect the reality of audiences’ news consumption patterns. The findings of this thesis suggest that both ‘soft’ infotainment (Sunrise) and ‘frivolous’ satire (The Chaser’s War on Everything) are used by audiences in intricate ways as sources of political information, and thus these TV programs (and those like them) should be seen as legitimate and valuable forms of public knowledge production. It therefore might be more worthwhile for scholars to think about, research and teach journalism in the plural: as a series of complementary or antagonistic journalisms, rather than as a single coherent entity.

Impact des combustibles sphere-pac innovants sur les performances de sûreté des réacteurs à neutrons rapides refroidis au sodium / Impact of innovative sphere-pac fuels on safety performances of sodium cooled fast reactors

Les futurs réacteurs à neutrons rapides refroidis au sodium (RNR-Na) doivent remplir les critères GEN-IV à savoir présenter des qualités d'économie, de sûreté améliorée, de résistance à la prolifération et de minimisation des déchets. Ce projet de thèse est dédié à l'étude de l'impact des combustibles innovants (spécialement le combustible oxyde sphere-pac chargé en actinides mineurs) sur les performances de sûreté des RNR-Na dédiés à la transmutation.Le code de calcul SIMMER-III, développé à l'origine pour les phases avancées d'un accident grave, est utilisé pour les simulations. Ce code a été étendu dans le cadre de cette thèse afin d'améliorer la simulation de la phase primaire de l'accident, en introduisant le traitement des effets en réactivité liés à la dilatation du cœur et les spécificités du combustible sphere-pac (conductivité thermique, gap). Les transitoires complets (de la phase d'initiation aux phases avancées) sont simulés avec cette version étendue du code. Dans le cadre de cette thèse, les propriétés thermiques du combustible sphere-pac ont été modélisées et adaptées à SIMMER. Une méthodologie innovante tenant compte des effets en réactivité liés à la dilation thermique du cœur dans un maillage Eulérien et dans le cadre de la cinétique spatiale a ensuite été développée. A chaque pas de temps, les dimensions et densités dilatées sont calculées pour chaque cellule suite aux variations de températures. Des facteurs correctifs sont appliqués aux densités dilatées pour obtenir une configuration équivalente (en réactivité) ayant les dimensions non-dilatées et des densités modifiées. De nouvelles sections efficaces sont calculées à partir de ces densités et l'effet en réactivité lié à la dilatation est calculé. Les résultats sont prometteurs pour des dilatations uniformes et non-uniformes. Des limitations dans le cas de dilatations non-uniformes ont été identifiées et des calculs neutroniques ont été effectués en vue de futurs développements SIMMER. Les résultats préliminaires sont encourageants. Enfin, deux cœurs RNR-Na, issus du précédent projet CP-ESFR, ont été modélisés avec des combustibles sphere-pac : le Working Horse et le CONF2 (présentant un plénum sodium élargi pour une diminution de l'effet de vide sodium). Des analyses de sûreté ont été effectuées afin de fournir une première évaluation du comportement du combustible sphere-pac comparé au combustible pastille. Les deux options sont analysées en situation nominale et accidentelle (accident de perte de débit primaire) en début de vie du cœur et après irradiation. Les analyses révèlent deux phases à considérer en début de vie pour le combustible sphere-pac. Au démarrage du réacteur, ce combustible n'est pas restructuré et sa conductivité thermique est très inférieure à celle du combustible pastille. Après quelques heures sous irradiation, il se restructure suite aux importants gradients de température, ce qui améliore sa conductivité. Il se comporte alors de façon similaire au combustible pastille. Ce travail a également permis d'évaluer le comportement accidentel du cœur CONF2 qui subit un transitoire doux, prouvant que le large plénum sodium prévient efficacement de larges insertions de réactivité positive. Cependant, avec l'ajout d'américium ou suite à l'irradiation, des excursions de puissance et de réactivité plus prononcées sont observées. Ce travail a permis de démontrer que le combustible sphere-pac ne semble pas causer de problèmes de sûreté spécifiques comparé au combustible pastille, dans les conditions de simulations actuelles. La prise en compte des effets en réactivité liés à la dilatation du cœur avec cette version étendue de SIMMER retarde et réduit le potentiel énergétique lors d'un accident. Les analyses confirment également l'action atténuante du plénum sodium sur les transitoires conduisant à la vidange du sodium du coeur. Le comportement du combustible sphere-pac dans ces conditions ouvre une perspective à son utilisation en RNR-Na. / Future sodium cooled fast reactors (SFRs) have to fulfill the GEN-IV requirements of enhanced safety, minimal waste production, increased proliferation resistance and high economical potential. This PhD project is dedicated to the evaluation of the impact of innovative fuels (especially minor actinides bearing oxide sphere-pac fuels) on the safety performance of advanced SFRs with transmutation option. The SIMMER-III code, originally tailored to mechanistically analyze later phases of core disruptive accidents, is employed for accident simulations. During the PhD project, the code has been extended for a better simulation of the early accident phase introducing the treatment of thermal expansion reactivity effects and for taking into account the specifics of sphere-pac fuels (thermal conductivity and gap conditions). The entire transients (from the initiating event to later accident phases) have been modeled with this extended SIMMER version. Within this PhD work, first the thermo-physical properties of sphere-pac fuel have been modeled and casted into SIMMER-III. Then, a new computational method to account for thermal expansion feedbacks has been developed to improve the initiation phase modeling of the code. The technique has the potential to evaluate these reactivity feedbacks for a fixed Eulerian mesh and in a spatial kinetics framework. At each time step, cell-wise expanded dimensions and densities are calculated based on temperature variations. Density factors are applied to the expanded densities to get an equivalent configuration (in reactivity) with original dimensions and modified densities. New cross sections are calculated with these densities and the reactivity of the equivalent configuration is computed. The developed methods show promising results for uniform and non-uniform expansions. For non-uniform expansions, model improvement needs have been identified and neutronics simulations have been carried out to support future SIMMER extensions. Preliminary results are encouraging. In the third part of the PhD, two core designs with conventional and sphere pac fuels are compared with respect to their transient behavior. These designs were established in the former CP-ESFR project: the working horse core and the optimized CONF2 core (with a large sodium plenum above the core for coolant void worth reduction). The two fuel design options are compared for steady state and transient conditions (Unprotected Loss of Flow accident, ULOF) either at beginning of life (BOL) or under irradiated conditions. Analyses for sphere-pac fuel reveal two main phases to consider at BOL. At start-up, the non-restructured sphere-pac fuel shows a low thermal conductivity compared to pellet fuel of same density. However, the fuel restructures quickly (in a few hours) due to the high thermal gradients and its thermal conductivity recovers. The fuel then shows a behavior close to the pellet one. The study also shows that the CONF2 core leads to a very mild transient for a ULOF accident at BOL. The large upper sodium plenum seems to effectively prevent large positive reactivity insertions. However, stronger reactivity and power peaks are observed under irradiated conditions or when americium is loaded in the core and lower axial blanket. This PhD work demonstrates, under current simulation conditions, that sphere-pac fuels do not seem to cause specific safety issues compared to standard pellet fuels, when loaded in SFRs. The accurate simulation of core thermal expansion reactivity feedbacks by means of the extended SIMMER version plays an important role in the accident timing (simulations confirm the expected delay in the first power peak) and on the energetic potential compared to the case where these feedbacks are omitted. The analyses also confirm the mitigating impact of a large sodium plenum on transients with voiding potential. The behavior of sphere-pac fuel in these conditions opens a perspective to its practical application in SFRs.

Caractérisation des disques de débris par imagerie directe et haute résolution angulaire : les performances de NaCo et SPHERE / Characterisation of debris discs in direct imaging and high angular resoltion : the performance of NaCo and SPHERE

Les vingt-cinq dernières années ont connu une véritable révolution dans notre connaissance des systèmes planétaires avec plus de 1800 planètes extrasolaires connues à ce jour. L'étude observationnelle des disques de débris constitue l'approche proposée dans ce travail de thèse pour éclairer les processus de formation et d'évolution des systèmes planétaires. Ces disques circumstellaires sont constitués de particules de poussière générées par des collisions de petits corps appelés planétésimaux, en orbite autour d'une étoile de la séquence principale. La lumière stellaire qu'elles diffusent représente une observable particulièrement riche en informations sur l'architecture du système, mais difficile d'accès en raison du contraste élevé et de la faible séparation angulaire avec leur étoile. Le développement récent de nouveaux instruments à haut contraste équipés d'optique adaptative extrême représente un formidable potentiel pour l'étude de ces systèmes. Cette thèse se place dans le cadre de ces nouveaux développements et porte sur la caractérisation des disques de débris grâce à deux instruments qui équipent le VLT (Very Large Telescope) : NaCo et SPHERE (Spectro Polarimetric High contrast Exoplanet REsearch). NaCo est en opération depuis plus de 10 ans et a connu plusieurs améliorations successives. SPHERE a été conçu et développé dans la même période, testé intensivement en laboratoire en 2013 et est actuellement en cours de vérification opérationnelle sur le télescope. Le caractère novateur de ce travail consiste à associer à l'étude des propriétés physiques des disques de débris, une expertise instrumentale poussée pour tirer le meilleur profit des observations. La première partie vise à développer et caractériser des méthodes de réduction de données innovantes adaptées aux observations de disques en lumière diffusée et au comportement de l'instrument. En particulier les atouts, performances et biais des techniques d'imagerie différentielle angulaire, polarimétrique et de soustraction de référence sont quantifiés. Ces méthodes sont appliquées, dans une seconde partie, à l'étude et la caractérisation de deux prototypes de disques de débris entourant les étoiles beta Pictoris et HR 4796A. Elles permettent une analyse poussée de la morphologie de ces disques et révèlent de nouvelles asymétries, interprétées en terme de perturbateurs gravitationnels ou de propriétés de diffusion de la lumière par la poussière. Enfin une évaluation prospective des performances attendues et observées avec l'instrument SPHERE est détaillée dans la dernière section, basée sur des simulations et des mesures en laboratoire ou sur le ciel. Une comparaison avec NaCo révèle les points forts de SPHERE avant de conclure sur les questions scientifiques auxquelles les observations de disques de débris avec SPHERE pourront apporter des réponses. / Over the last two and a half decades, the discovery of more than 1800 exoplanets has been a major breakthrough in our understanding of planetary systems. To shed light on the formation and evolution processes of such systems, I have chosen an observational approach based on the study of debris discs. These circumstellar discs are composed of dust particles constantly generated by collisions of small rocky bodies called planetesimals, orbiting a main-sequence star. The stellar light they scatter can be studied from the Earth and reveal a wealth of information on the architecture of the system. These observations are challenging because of the high contrast and the small angular separation between the disc and the star. The recent developments of new high-contrast instruments with extreme adaptive optic systems are therefore bringing new expectations for the study of these systems and set the framework of this PhD thesis. My work aims at characterising debris discs thanks to two instruments installed on the Very Large Telescope: NaCo and SPHERE (Spectro Polarimetric High contrast Exoplanet REsearch). NaCo has been in operation for more than a decade and has undergone many improvements. SPHERE has been designed and assembled in the same period, was intensively tested in laboratory in 2013, and is currently being commissioned on the telescope. The innovative approach of this PhD work is to combine the study of debris discs with strong instrumental expertise to get the best science results from the observations. The first part of the study aims at developing innovative data reduction techniques adapted to the observations of discs in scattered light and to the behaviour of the instrument. I quantify in particular the performances, advantages, and biases of the angular, polarimetric and reference-star differential imaging technique. In a next step, I apply those techniques to characterise two prototypes of debris discs, around the stars beta Pictoris and HR 4796A. A detailed analysis of the morphology is carried out, which reveals new asymmetries interpreted in terms of gravitational perturbers or of dust scattering properties. Lastly, I detail the expected and measured performances of SPHERE, from simulations, laboratory and on-sky measurements. A comparison with NaCo reveals the assets of SPHERE and I conclude with the scientific questions SPHERE will be able to answer with new debris disc observations.

Crystal Nucleation in Binary Hard Sphere Mixtures

Homogeneous crystal nucleation in binary hard sphere mixtures is an active area of research for last two decades. Although Classical nucleation theory (CNT) gives a qualitative picture, it fails at high super saturations because of the following reasons. CNT assumes that the cluster formed is spherical in shape, its properties can be modeled using the bulk properties of the stable solid phase and the interfacial free energy γ between the nucleus and the surrounding metastable fluid is equal to the planar surface tension between two phases at coexistence. These assumptions get increasingly tenuous at higher degrees of super saturations where the critical nucleus formed is microscopic in size leading to breakdown in the predictions of CNT. In addition direct experimental observation of critical nucleus is very difficult because, 1. Critical nucleus is microscopic in size, consisting of few hundreds of particles. 2. Formation of critical cluster is very rare (typically of the order of 101– 106nuclei/cm3/s) 3. Its life time is very short (it either rapidly grows to form a solid phase or melts back to fluid) In these circumstances molecular simulations are an attractive tool to study the crystal nucleation, because in these simulations microscopic size critical nucleus properties can be calculated. However, brute force molecular dynamic (MD) simulation techniques to study the homogeneous crystal nucleation is currently not feasible due to long times involved. Hence, an indirect approach is needed. In this work, Monte Carlo Abstract v (MC) molecular simulation techniques are used to calculate free energy barrier height during the crystal nucleation. Phase behavior of Binary hard sphere mixtures with varying ratios of smaller diameter to larger diameter (α) is very similar to that of binary organic liquids. By studying the crystal nucleation in hard sphere system, the physics behind the nucleation for binary organic liquids can be understood. This is the key motivation to study the homogeneous crystal nucleation in binary hard sphere mixtures using MC simulations. Simulations were done using umbrella sampling in combination with local bond order analysis for the identification of crystal nuclei and to compute shape and height of nucleation barrier. Parallel tempering scheme of Geyer and Thomson was utilized to sample phase space more efficiently. Parallel tempering technique was implemented using Message passing interface (MPI) libraries. By using all the above Monte-Carlo simulation techniques, nucleation barrier was calculated during crystallization of binary hard sphere mixtures under the moderate degrees of super cooling in Isothermal-Isobaric semi grand ensembles. Crystal nucleation in binary hard sphere mixtures has been studied for size ratios α = 0.85, 0.42 and 0.43. For α=0.85, phase diagram contains eutectic point. In this system, the effect of eutectic composition on the nucleation barrier height was observed, by calculating nucleation barriers at various fluid mixture compositions keeping Laplace pressure constant. It is observed that as the fluid mixture composition move towards the eutectic point, free energy barrier height, surface tension and critical cluster sizes are increased and the nucleation rate is drastically decreased by a factor of 10-31. Thus the difficulty of homogenous crystal nucleation increases near the eutectic point. For α=0.42 and 0.43 in the hard sphere system, compound solids such as AB and AB2 solids are stable respectively. In these systems crystal nucleation study was done to observe the compound solid formation. It is observed that in these systems crystallization kinetics are very slow and more advanced simulation techniques need to be developed in order to study crystal nucleation.

Manipulated Private and Public Spheres : The Use of Control Technologies by Totalitarian Regimes

In my paper, I explore how totalitarian regimes use technology to break the borders between the private and public spheres, through the study of two fictional works. Reflecting how real regimes operate, these fictional totalitarian regimes apply technology to extend the sphere of public authority. Exploring the idea, I am going to compare two totalitarian regimes in different periods of time. The first one is the Republic of Gieald, which is depicted in The Handmaid’s Tale 1985 by Margaret Atwood, and the second one is the society presented in the movie The Island, directed by Michael Bay. By technology in my paper, I mean it in the most comprehensive sense of the term, modern invented technologies and institutions after 18th century in post Industrial Revolution era. In what follows, I am applying the concepts, which are the product of control invention. I will argue that the states penetrate into private sphere by imposing repressive rules for having sex or reproductivity. Moreover, I portray that the states use different forms of media and surveillance in private and public spheres, to enlarge the state.

Experiments On Rolling Sphere Submerged In An Incompressible Fluid

Experiments are done using a smooth solid rigid homogeneous acrylic sphere rolling on an inclined plane which is submerged in water. The motivation for these experiments comes from a need to understand a class of solid-fluid interaction problems that include sediment transport, movement of gravel on ocean floor and river bed due to water currents. Experiments are performed in a glass water tank 15 cm wide by 14 cm deep by 61 cm long which can be tilted to desired angle. The sphere is released from rest on the inclined false bottom of the tank in quiescent water. Our experimental study has twofold aim: (1)to study the boundary layer separation, the three-dimensional eddying motion in the wake and the near-wake structure and(2) to establish hydrodynamic force coefficients by analyzing kinematical data of the sphere motion from start to till it attains terminal velocity. Experiments are carried out at moderate Reynolds number Rearound1500. Previous studies on the first problem exist in the literature for Reup to 350. Previous studies on the second problem do not clearly define the added-mass coefficient and the influence of the water tank side-walls on the drag coefficient. In the first study, the characterization of the wake is done using flow visualization methods (fluoresce in dye visualization and particle streak visualization) and Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). Laser light sheet obtained from an argon ion continuous laser beam is taken in different orientations to illuminate the fluoresce in dye or 14 m silver-coated hollow glass spheres. These experiments show that the wake behind the rolling sphere up to 1.6 diameters (or 1.6D) downstream is confined within height 1.2Dand width1.2D. At about 1.8Ddownstream, the wake sways alternately on either side of the equatorial plane, moving in lateral-vertical direction and moving out of the confining region; this gives zigzag appearance to the wake. Also in these experiments, we observe that the flow separations from the surface of the rolling sphere show three separation zones. The eddies shed from the primary separation surface on the upper hemisphere are symmetrical about the equatorial plane with Strouhal number St=1.0. The primary separation is affected by the symmetrical secondary separations on the rear surface in the piggyback region — it is the region near the upper rear surface of the sphere behind the transverse equatorial plane and below the primary separation surface. The lower eddies below the primary separation zone are shed alternately on either side of the equatorial plane with shedding frequency St=0.5. Our experiments show that there is a viscous blockage of width 0.4Dat the crevice near the point of contact. On either side of the viscous blockage at the crevice, we see weak symmetric eddies. Based on our experimental observations, we proceed to build a simple physical model of the separated flow on the surface of the rolling sphere. In the second study, the motion of the sphere is photographed and paired data of the displacement and time is obtained for the sphere motion from the start of motion till terminal velocity is reached at about 4.5 sphere diameters from the point of release of the sphere. Equation of motion of the sphere is solved numerically treating added-mass coefficient Ca and drag coefficient Cd as parameters. Experimental data is fitted on these solutions and the best fit gives the values of the force coefficients. Theoretical value of Ca equal to 0.621 is confirmed experimentally. Value of Cd is found to be 1.23 at Re=990 and it is 1.06 at Re= 1900. Side-wall effects become important for ratio of diameter of sphere to width of tank greaterthan0.20.
